First off, just entering the bakery, the smell.... Although I already ate before arriving, I could…read moredefinitely eat again. Keeping my "blinders" on, my mission is to get a few of those famous crispy bakes for my daughter's 26 birthday instead of buying a whole cake. My attendant, Eimau, (hope I spelled correcty, if not, my apologies) was so pleasant and his patience servicing me has me leaving with not only a few bakes, but cake pops, cupcakes and macaroons!! You have to try this nice place, so good. Thank you all for your service.

I returned to Lilla Vanilla after a mediocre visit a couple of months ago. I was initially on the…read morefence due to the two viral crunches I tried--only one was enjoyable--and I wasn't impressed with the service. That said, I don't believe in writing a place off after a single average experience, so I decided to give it a second chance. This time, I ordered two different viral crunches along with a croissant. Unfortunately, the results were disappointing across the board. The Mixed Berry Crunchy was cute in presentation, but that was its only redeeming quality. There was no bold--or even subtle--mixed berry flavor. At $10, it felt wildly overpriced and not worth the calories. Next was the Lemon Crunchy, which is supposed to feature a lemon blueberry flavor. As someone who loves lemon, I had high expectations, but once again it was bland and forgettable. Since this is a bakery, I also tried a fresh croissant and asked for it to be warmed. The staff accommodated the request, and it smelled incredible. It was warm, light, and flaky--but sadly, the flavor fell flat. A light brushing of butter on top would have gone a long way. For me, this is strike two. Unfortunately, Lilla Vanilla just isn't worth the money or the calories. Based on my experience--mediocre service on the first visit, bland and overpriced featured items on the second, and only neutral-to-slightly-positive notes on the croissant--I'd rate it 2 out of 5 . I seriously contemplated giving them 1 star but to be fair, the viral crunchy presentation was appealing and the croissant did have good texture (even if the flavor missed).

As many of you probably suspect, while I have a healthy admiration for great marketing, what really…read moreintriques me are those truly bad campaigns that latch onto your brain stem like a fungus and won't let go. Case in point, Pillsbury's Tunnel of Fudge Bundt Cake contests in the late 60's/early 70's that brought the heretofore niche German ring cake to homemaker prominence in the US. The specter of the Pillsbury Dough Boy dressed as a latter day Burgher Meister/Meister Burgher was truly comedy gold. That doughy androgenous spokesthing was truly they/them before those designations were even on the cultural horizon. You might even say the Doughboy was the Ziggy Stardust of Package Goods marketing. He did however bring the Bundt Cake into the mainstream for which I am eternally grateful. All of which is to say that Nothing but Bundt Cakes is terrific offering these high density circular treats with enough sweet icing to melt your molars. Great stuff all around and in the bakery desert known as Princeton a very welcome addition. Five very easy stars.

The woman at the counter welcomed me and let me know they had samples of red velvet cake to try. After having their red velvet cake with chocolate chips inside, I loved how these did not. Even in small portions, the cake was amazing. A couple of days prior, I received an email about their new churro bundt cakes, so I already knew which one I wanted. I appreciated how the icing and chocolate drizzle were soft on top. The cake itself was moist (one thing they nail every time). The star of the show was the chocolate drizzle that oozed from the inside when you got to the center. This cake is easily a 10/10.

I thought I'd written a review about this place before but to my shock I had not…read more I have been coming here since the day they opened, infrequently beacuse I am diabetic but when I want to spoil my body with delicious sugar, honey, this is *IT*. Now I could tell you all about how perfectly tasty everything is. From the classic banana puddings (I prefer the caramel version myself,) to the cookies, to the pineapple upside-down mini cakes. Yes, I could tell you that. But I want to speak to something deeper. I want to speak to belonging and community; and to fairness. As a biracial person with a brown sister, I feel the pull to support black and brown businesses. It's not a secret. And sometimes you do it, and sometimes you privately think "Damn. I wanna be supportive but this place is a mess." Then there's Sweet Life. NOT that. FILLED with good product at a great price, delivered by owners and staff who actually give a damn about being loving and supportive to all different types of people. And did I mention the sweets are POPPIN'? And to that statement of fairness. Today I came in to place an order, and when the price came up, for a moment I thought "Damn. That is a lot higher than I remembered, but I am not about to question them. They set the price and that price is what they deserve." So I paid. But then I noticed there was more in my bag that I'd asked for, and that there had been a miscommunication. When I tell you that this miscommunication was corrected with swiftness *AND* a smile. No shade. No drama. Just an "Ooops, oh well, here's your refund on the balance." I know this seems very basic but we all know it isn't. We have all been in that awkward situation where as a customer we have to point out an error, and the vendor turns it into a Shakespearan tragedy. Not Sweet Life. "Oops. Sorry! Fixed. Love you." So, to recap: Stunningly delicious sweets. Prices fair as hell. Communicative, inclusive staff doing the right thing. You need to take those money dollers and haul your ass over here TODAY. Now...where did I put my insulin pen?
