This is my favorite ice place in Houston, hands down. I've had the green tea, almond, mango, regular, and taro. My personal favorite were the green tea and taro, but i wouldn't recommend them unless you know you like the flavors beforehand. Even though they've grown a little stingy with their topping portions over the past couple of years, this place is definitely still worth a try! What a cool and unique spot to end your night! Shaved ice-cream with all sorts of toppings. The servings are large and it's well worth the price point. After reading a few reviews of this "Nu" place, I decided it was time to see what the fuss was over. This place is located in between the Star Teriyaki and JuiceBox (if memory serves me). It's a pretty small place compared to the others, but I think the size adds to it's charm. The service is your basic tea shops and/or dessert places: you walk to the cashier, order, sit, then they bring you your order. Nothing out of the ordinary. However...their shaved-ice is unique. They call is "snowflake". I find that I am at loss for words on how to describe it. The pictures (posted one) don't do it justice either, because it just looks like a pile of crap - literally. The way it is layered could only be described as - imagine if you will - freshly made pasta coming out of crank and folding on top of itself. It's not quite the density of ice cream, but it's not as light as to call it ice (although it is). As I suggested to Natalie D., it's a place to try if you're tired of the ordinary desserts in the area. Yes, it's more expensive than the others next door, and yes you don't get as much, but the quality is something to look at here as well. I would recommend giving it a shot at least once. The first time I ate shaved ice from here I felt like I was eating a cloud because it was so light and fluffy tasting! Basically as other reviewers have stated you fill out a form where you choose the flavor of the ice, the toppings, and then the syrups/sauces. I believe they also have set options as well, but I always customize my ice. There are two sizes regular ($5) and large ($7). Unfortunately this place is a bit pricey having up-charges for fruit flavored ices which is kind of bogus. In terms of drinks, I haven't been wowed. All delicious! 3) The hidden star, the crepes: The crepes were a surprisingly delicious plate! We've had the mango crepe three times now and every time we think it'll be overpowering, but it's not! I was super excited to try this place today! It definitely met my expectations as far as taste and texture. Super creamy in the mouth. Presentation needs a little work, I would suggest serving the larger portion on a larger plate and placing the tops on the sides not at the bottom of the ice. My friends and I came here after dinner, and we thought the place was pretty nice and original. Nu Cafe is known for their shaved ice cream called snowflake ice. They have a variety of flavors such as milk, peanut, green tea, and taro. I also learned that they make their ice cream homemade! My favorite flavor is green tea anything, so I was excited to see that they had green tea snowflake ice. I thought the dish was smooth, soft, and the taste was right on. I had my green tea snowflake with red beans and lychee jelly. I plan to come back soon and try their taro snowflake ice too. This is my first time having this kind of dessert, but I think you can't lose with shaved ice cream. Also, this is a neat cafe to try with out-of-town friends. And finally, I tried the food. I would give the desserts a good 5 stars, I love it. The food.... 1 star. So in total this place is just okay. We ordered the 3 combo meat meal, the popcorn chicken meal and the tonkotsu ramen (wanted to try it out). My boyfriend and I were so unsatisfied with our lunch and we couldn't even get ourselves to finish it. We were both so hungry and I personally hate wasting food. But the food there was just so plain and dull. It was definitely a waste a money. There are so many other places to eat and we will never eat there again. On the other hand, the shaved ice is delectable! I love the dessert here and the tapioca drinks are consistent. So I have to beg him to bring me. I order the green tea with sweetened condensed milk and almonds. It is so addicting. They have so many different combos to make. This Taiwanese snowflake ice is amazing: think New Orleans style fluffy shaved ice meets Dipping Dots! The way they shave the ice is pretty cool and it comes out in delicate folds and layers. Since this looks creamy and icy, you expect it to be wet when it hits your tongue, but somehow it's not. It's got that super cold nitrogen frozen Dipping Dots mouth-feel going on. I could easily eat a large by myself, but it's enough to share. For $6 a pop, you'll WANT to share. They have forms you fill out to choose your ice flavor and toppings. We enjoyed the mango and vanilla flavored ice with various fruits, mochi, and ALWAYS get condensed milk on top. I'm excited to try the coconut or chocolate ice! As far as the Nu Cafe snowflake ice versus Juice Box shaved ice debate goes, I'm not sure which side of the fence I fall on because I LOVE them both. The shaved ice here is "different" because they've mixed the flavors with the ice and basically created a sorbet-like shaved ice (without the tartness). It was good, but expensive! You get your pick of 2 sizes: small or large - and honestly, the way they showed me the sizes... I couldn't tell the difference between the two so I naturally went for the small. And yes, it was about $5 for the tiny size and sparse toppings. What's funny is their advertisement on the 'nu ice' because they claim it's healthy or low in fat (I forget); however, if you get the milk ice you can instantly taste the condense milk that's mixed in it so I think it's pretty misleading (I don't know of a healthy condense milk and if there is, please let me know!). Other flavors: green tea ice, chocolate ice, mango, and peanut. Overall, this place is not bad. I haven't tried their food there, but the Hawaiian BBQ looks good. As far as shaved ice goes, I was pretty disappointed. I had the hill sized lychee ice with condensed milk and mango. The portion was good for the price, as without someone to share with, I'd probably not finish. However, that was the only redeemable thing. The ice was pretty watered down to me, and the mango wasn't sweet. Also, I wished their was more condensed milk. As far as Houston shaved ice places go, this place is pretty average. I never thought I would like anything ice based since snow cones are just not my thing. I was kind of afraid of artifices syrup tasting gloop but man I really had no reason to be afraid! The area is very, very cramped. For such a popular place, it's way too cramped. The store is always bustling and it's kind of hard to move around but it doesn't matter! The desert is great and I'd eat it standing up, honestly! I've only gotten green tea (cause I'm a matcha lover) but I think all of them would taste divine. The texture is weird but awesome. It's hard to explain. The side toppings do cost a little extra for a very small portion but I recommend getting at least one since the shaved ice itself only has one texture and flavor. I've gotten the mochi, which I wouldn't recommend since it just tastes like flour, the tapioca, which is always a great choice, and the strawberries, which tasted like fresh ones from the supermarket. I've also tried the mango drink which was good. Too thick for my tastes but was good nonetheless! I haven't tried many things from Nu but you definitely won't regret stopping by for shaved ice! read more
