We had old hardwood floors that needed to be rescued and refinished. Some rooms had stains on the hardwood floor but Number One Hardwood came in and after sanding and staining, it looks great! We also had old vinyl flooring in the kitchen and family room that needed to be upgraded. They took out the old vinyl and put in the new LVP and it matched the refinished hardwood floors. I will start off by saying that this review is not about the work they did, because they did no work. I called them out to give an estimate to redo the hardwood floors and also add some flooring to a house that my wife and I just purchased. The guy, who's name I cannot remember, showed up almost seeming as if he did want to be there. I spoke to him when he arrived and he barely spoke back, and refused to even look me in the face as if he did not want to be there. I hate to say this but this is what I thought, as I have dealt with this nonsense before, "what's wrong a Black man cant own a house." I may be off base with that but that is damn sure how I felt. Although he was extremely unfriendly, he walked through the small house and listened to my requests and made a couple of suggestions. He told me I would receive an estimate the following day. That was about 2 weeks ago--no contact at all. I shouldn't have been surprised at all since he seemed to not want to be there in the first place or be of any service to me. read more

Tai and his crew worked on our floor for the 2nd time in 14 years and they did not disappoint. We ran into delays with our other work and had to reschedule twice. I also expanded the scope a bit by adding floor registers to close and old water damage in the rooms next to the bathrooms. Tai was extremely flexible and accommodating. We've been doing a lot of work around the house and we're a bit tired of contractors nickel and diming us with any excuse to tack on upsell. Tai definitely is not one of them. Our floors in Marin County are 70 year-old wide plank red oak that has always been a medium brown that looks its age and is out-of-style. We took a chance in sanding them one more time and Tai and his crew were careful to not take the boards down too much as this is likely the last time that sufficient thickness of the floors existed to sand. We stained the floors dark grey, a color that is currently popular. And then we had the entire interior painted a decorater white. The result is a transformation that makes the home more current and we are pleased. It is important to weigh cost against quality and Tai worked with us on price. Given the age of the floors and the manner in which the stain took or did not, the finish result is not a "A" quality job and is consistent with the value price. That said, once furniture and area carpets go down, some of the minor flaws are covered. The Crew at Number One Hardwood arrive early and ready to work quickly and efficiently. On day one, 6-7 workers arrived and they worked seemingly non-stop all over the house and the sanding was done in 9 hours. Without exaggeration, most other contractors would likely take 3 days before the sanding is done and the stain goes down. No matter who you hire, if all rooms are completely empty, you can save money. To summarize. These guys work quickly and deliver an acceptable result for a good price. If you are comfortable with a "B" to "B+" quality job, give these guys a chance. If you need near perfection or an "A" quality result with very expensive floors, you will want to be very specific and demanding in your contract so that the workers slow down and take the time and care necessary for the result that you want. read more

Ken and his crew did a great job. They were fast and efficient. I had no problem communicating mainly via text. I usually got a response back in minutes. Had them sand and clear strip oak in a beautiful SF Victorian flat. Not an easy job, two of the rooms were old and one newer. Different color oak used years ago, original white oak and a remodel 20 years ago with red oak. They did a great job and went the extra mile to make sure I was happy with the final color match. We've used Number One for many years and have been very pleased with their workmanship, service, and prices. Kem has refinished five different hardwood floors for me including a house that had been a kennel for large dogs -- each location turned out great and kept me going back to them. They did a refinish at a preschool and were great about moving all the furniture and applying extra coats of finish to help deal with the damage inflicted by little kids. Their price was less than half of what the school paid a different company the previous year. Recently, we had Tai install new hardwood floors in most of a large house. We got bids from three other contractors and Number One was certainly reasonable. The results are spectacular! They did an amazing job dealing with details like a brick wall which would have no baseboard, wooden heater vents, transitions, and flooring in the closets. They worked with my tight schedule and sent over great guys to do the work. Then, when the old fridge leaked and made the kitchen floor buckle, they came right out, fixed the damage, and barely charged me anything for the work. Wow, refinishing old hardwood floors is amazing! Our floors look terrific and Tai and his crew did a great job! Tai was recommended by my in-laws and their floors look great. Also, there was tons of rot that they replaced, a disgusting amount of staining (house was 100 years old and the floors had never been refinshed) and holes from carpet that they filled. Tai had great advice on stain color. In addition, the project involved re-staining the traditional, reddish-brown color wood, in the entire home, to a modern white. We hired Number One Hardwood to tackle the job, and it was one of the best home improvement decisions we ever made. I was somewhat cautious because the price point appeared too good to be true but ultimately it was proven that Number One offered exceptional value for exceptional work. I'm writing this receive 13 years after my first experience with Number One Hardwood Floors. Back then I had him refinish my oak floors and stain it a dark chocolate color. It turned out great and I had a lot of compliments. I just hired them again last month to refinish my parent's house. But this time just the basic natural color so no stain. It turned out very nice and made the house remodel complete. Both times I dealt directly with the project manger Tai. He always answered when I called or called back within an hour. Especially the first job my wife called him constantly to ask questions. Their rates were surprisingly much lower than other quotes I got. And they can back to touch up a blemish I made with no charge! Tai was quite forthcoming with suggestions but in the end he did what we asked. He was suggesting against the dark chocolate color but in the end it turned out amazing. read more

We had to fire Number One Hardwood Floors halfway through the job. Tai, the owner, came recommended by two friends, although they warned he was a bad communicator. I had seen the photos of the work Number One did, and floors looked beautiful. A day into our job, the workers tried to dissuade me from the blonde stain Tai had agreed to apply, without any reason. They gave me incorrect information, as it turned out, and the floors with varnish came out darker than the sample. (All they had to do, I found out from our next wood refinisher, was sand a little deeper.) There were multiple gouges and scratches the workers did to the wood after they stained it and put the first coat of varnish on. They "fixed it" and left raw wood filler and rough, sanded patches. Much of the plastic we spent a day to put on the shutters, closets, and built-in drawers was ripped off or purposely punctured during the sanding process (not afterwards to put the varnish on), so everything was filthy. At one point, I walked in to find one worker had opened up a closet that had been covered with plastic--for no purpose at all--and I had to tell him to close it (what was he doing?). Then work was postponed for a week without any explanation, and then deferred for still another two days. We paid a very generous price for the work that was partially completed and fired Number One. During that time, Tai never came once to inspect the work that his crew had done, and there was a different crew every time they came, so no continuity. In short, there is no oversight, no communication, no attention to details, no respect for schedule, and no quality control. read more

(picture posted) Floor polish left on windows to dry (picture posted) Chemicals and a nail poured into my toilet Took 2 extra days, thus more hotel cost Used my personal towel as a cleaning rags Details: I hired Tai to refinish my maple hardwood floors. It took 3 days, as expected. When I arrive back home, Tai was cleaning my windows with a rag. I assumed he was cleaning the dust that had been left by the sander. I didn't think much of it. Later, I noticed: 1. The rag that Tai was had been using to clean my windows was my own hand towel from my bathroom. I really don't know what gave him the idea that it was ok to take my towels and use them as cleaning rags. 2. There were visible grooves left in the hardwood. These were not there before and had been left from the sander during refinishing. (picture posted) 3. There was floor polish left on the windows where the meet the floor. It was left to dry and was very difficult to scrape off. (Picture posed) 4. There were a couple of small sections that were not refinished at all. The original, darker polish was still left un-sanded. 5. Polish had been left to run over and dry on the sides of the floors. (picture posted) I called Tai and told him that the floors had grooves in them. He sent someone to have a look the next day. The person he sent asked which sections needed to be redone. We looked over the floor and it became apparent that it was not just a limited portion that had been improperly sanded. It was everywhere. I called Tai and told him that the entire floor was done improperly. He said that he would do whatever it took to fix it. I said that the floors had to be redone and he agreed to do it. He told me that the sander used was not the correct one and that is what caused the grooves. This really frustrated me because he already knew this. Rather than telling me upfront that something had gone wrong, he decided to just pretend everything was fine and just wait to see if I complained. We scheduled a time for the floors to be refinished, again. That day, I met with the person that arrived. He appeared to be a day laborer and only spoke a bit of English. I asked him if he had the correct sander this time. He told me that this was the same sander used the first time. He said that he was not able to get another sander. So I called Tai and told him. Tai insisted that the sander was a new, better one. So I gave my phone to the day laborer and asked him to talk to Tai. When they were done talking the day laborer said that if I didn't want him to use this sander, then he would have to come back another day. I tried telling him that it wasn't that I cared what sander he used, but that I wanted to make sure the job was done right. He didn't seem to understand me and told me again that if I wanted him to use a different sander, then he would not be able to start work that day. After a bit of back and forth, Tai's brother showed up. He gave me a different explanation about why the grooves were left in the hardwood. He said that the sander had not been calibrated correctly the first time and that he had since had it calibrated. It was the same sander as the first time, but he would be able to make the floors smooth this time. Despite my better judgment, I decided to let them proceed with refinishing the floors, again. I had to stay in a hotel for 2 extra days. So my overall cost was now getting much higher. After the second time refinishing: 1. Most of the grooves left by the sander were gone. The floor sill had visible flaws in the sanding, but not nearly as bad as before. 2. There were milky chemicals poured into my toilet and also a rusted nail. I had to reach into the toilet and remove this myself. 3. Black electrical tape was used to tape up dust covers. (picture posted). This left black marks on my walls that I could not wash off. I had to repaint to rid of them. Again, increasing the total cost of this project. 4. There was still polish left on my windows where they meet the floors. I asked the day laborer to clean them off. He proceeded to scrap off about 25% of it and then asked, "[is that] ok"? I said, "no, there is still a lot of polish on the windows". So he then cleaned off about another 25% and asked again "[is that] ok". I said again, "no, there is a still a lot left". After a couple more times back and forth like this, he finally had gotten almost all of the polish off the windows, where it could be easily reached. But there was still a bit left that couldn't be easily reached by hand. Rather than have him use a tool to reach the rest and risk him scratching my windows, I didn't insist that he clean it all off. Some yelp reviews are good, but my experience was horrible. Perhasp quality of work is determined why who Tai sends out. If so, then it is just a crap shoot. read more

This is the tale of two jobs. One excellent, one meh. I have two identical apartment units. In each, Tai's team finished a large hallway and central living area. The adjoining bedrooms were did not need refinishing. However, Tai's team needed to match the stain. In one unit, they did a great job. In the second unit, they clearly didn't even try. (see photos). The sanding and finishing of the jobs Tai's team does is great. Very few grooves or warps; and high quality finish. Tai's team did the second job while we were away. We assumed that since the first unit was done so well, we could trust them. If you're going to have them do similar color matching, be sure to inspect the color match yourself. read more

I was so surprised when I saw what a great job Tai did on my floors. I have an old Craftsman bungalow that was built in 1937. The original 2" oak floors with the border were water damaged, pet stained and had places where there was some minor dry rot. Now- you cannot tell what is new and what has been there for 80 years. It just looks like it has all been well maintained. He even installed the engineered floor I bought for the kitchen, leveling the damaged sub floor perfectly, picking up the flooring I bought in San Leandro. My house is in Vallejo. Even though I added on installing the kitchen floor after the estimate, he still got the job done in three days as promised. I would highly recommend him. The pictures below speak for themselves. Tai and his team did a great job on our hardwood floors. He's responsive, and answered our (many, many) questions. We had a specific time frame inwhich the floors could be done (after we painted, but before we moved in), and Tai and his team accomodated that schedule. I will say that Tai is not the chatty, "hug it out" type. He's a business guy. Admittedly, his style is not as polished or "feel good" as others. But that's just it, he's brief in his answers and sticks to his word. Our floors look really good, and Tai's team had to fix a very big, gross pet mark (aka pee stain) that the previous owners' blind dog left for us. Gross. It looks like new now, as do the floors. And they paid attention to the details - the transistions between the floors are pretty, and look good. Tai's pricing was the best around, and we were able to move in on time, with a very dry floor. Four stars because there were a few "weird" things - we didn't get an invoice after the job was done, but got a call from Tai asking where our payment was. And, then, he'd prefer if you paid with a check and we got a little push back on using the credit card (although he did take it). Also, there was some sawdust left in the front of the house and cigarette butts in the front yard. All in all, I'd recommend Tai and his team (and have)!! read more

The team at Number One is, simply put, #1. Bernie stopped by within a few days of me calling for an estimate. I thought the estimate was extremely reasonable for the amount of work they would be doing (carpet removal was included at a very good price too!). We scheduled the work for 2 weeks later. The team arrived exactly on the day/time we scheduled and finished in 2 days. The floors look amazing! I can't even believe it's the same floor. It changes the whole house. It turned out that there was a bad stain in the middle of the room when the carpet was pulled up, and some water damage near our slider. The team replaced the boards and you can't even tell where the new boards are. I thought this would raise the estimated price, but nope. We paid exactly what they originally estimated. Also at the end of the work I noticed we had one single hardwood lip on a set of nearby stairs to a room that wasn't being worked on. I had forgotten to mention we wanted this lip refinished with the rest of the matching wood and the team didn't notice it either. I pointed it out to Bernie in the final look and he talked me through how to easily sand down and stain and finish this one board so it looks the same as the others nearby. He has already dropped off the stain and finish for me to fix it myself, just hours after the final look. A simple fix for what would've been a minor eyesore but I feel like it's the small things like this that show they have gone above and beyond to make sure we love the floors and that everything looks great. I was also expecting the house to be pretty dirty from all the sanding and except for a light dust on counters and appliances in the rooms that were refinished, it's not nearly as dirty of a process as I expected. Our 1926 Oakland rental was a challenge to pinpoint an exact day the floor-finishing team could arrive. Number One did it again! Sold my sixties rancher and bought an even older home whose floors were in pretty decent shape overall but really needed refinishing. Some spots had really bad wear and there were some stains that looked pretty deep to me. Tai gave me an estimate the same day I called, was able to come out the next week and refinished the floors to a tee (including stairs!) in three days for a VERY reasonable price. No way I'm using anybody else for any floors I need refinished or installed in the future. These guys are the best! read more
