Poor communication. Multiple mistakes. Waited almost a year. I regret having to write this review of specialty hardwood floors and Tony Nguyen in particular... I have worked with him multiple times, so when I needed help restoring my historical home I thought I could count on him. I contacted him in the fall of 2022 and got a quote in October. We needed to schedule around other construction in the spring of 2023. He postponed several months until around July. We couldn't get a hold of him for an additional 2-3 months. The job was just completed in September 2023. Our home was built in 1926 and has mostly original hardwood floors throughout. I contacted Tony to help restore our entryway. Previous owners had installed slate but it was ugly and interfered with the front door opening. Despite making it clear that we wanted to restore the original charm, he put in plain white oak. The quote he provide was reasonable and I appreciate the workmanship overall. It was a real shame to lose the original details though and Tony was unapologetic after making this serious error. I wanted to find a solution but he was self-righteous and truculent. I will never use him again and tell my friends to avoid working with him in the future. read more

I have been using Tony Specialty Hardwood floors for over 20 years. He has installed real Harwood and laminated floors. We just had are new refigerator hose leak, what a mess. I absolutely love my floors! We needed new flooring for our addition and wanted to match our original hardwood floors (1950s red oak slats). Tony was recommended to us by another floor company. Tony came and knew exactly what we wanted and needed for our addition/extension. He was able to stagger the new floor into the existing floor and continue throughout the new part of our home, matching color and design to the rest of our house. The processes took about 4 days from install to completion with an acclimation time of about a week prior. You cant even tell where the old floor ends and the new one begins. Exactly what we wanted! He is super easy going, very responsive, and knowledgeable. Out of the 3 estimates we got, he was hands down the best, both in price and customer service. Tony is nice but his crew did not do a good job. They took way too much wood off, didn't get the corners, the finish was uneven. He didn't handle details until I asked him to and then it was still a get er done approach, not a craftsman by any means. If you aren't particular, he's the guy for you. Absolutely happy with their service! We just got our house and wanted to get the floors refinished before we move in. The floors were orange-yellow and had a lot of black stains. This review is way overdue. Tony and his crew did an amazing job. He was on time during the initial estimate. I had compared him to two other companies, which Tony gave the best price. After we decided to go with Tony, (because he's so charismatic, has great reviews, and the best price) his crew finished the job in a week! Although we had a hiccup, Tony and his crew did great. The hiccup: I have an old house with original hardwood floor in the living room only, but it was unleveled. Tony suggested that I have it leveled by my contractor first. My contractor is unreliable, but Tony helped connect someone he works with to level my floor for me at approx $3 per square foot. He was booked until two weeks later, which I didn't mind waiting. I originally wanted to save my original hardwood floor, it was over a hundred years old, water-damaged, had pests, and was not leveled. Tony explained to me that it would look bad if I kept it just to keep it. The floor would be unleveled and compared with the new floor would just be in bad taste. After his crew finished I have no regrets. The floor is beautiful! His crew did great matching the old floor style with low profile oak with medium stain 2.25" wide boards. It's absolutely lovely! I added baseboards at $3 per linear foot to install with additional material cost. Tony's crew came in and it was done. Overall, work was great! Work done at lightening fast speed, very pro! Our home in Oakland has high end custom wood floors throughout, except the bedrooms. When the previous owner's were remolding the house they put carpet in the bedrooms. It was nice carpet, however horrible if you have young children and pets. The carpet met its life expectancy and it was time to find someone who could not only install perfectly, but match the color perfectly. Tony is completely amazing. He is a total professional on all fronts, wether it be refinishing, restaining, installing new flooring, removing old flooring, and hearing our vague description of what we hoped to have, and giving us everything we wanted and more. He was calm and professional every step of the way, and was able to work within our schedule and building limitations (no heat) to give us tremendous new floors in a about two weeks. Our job included matching new wood to the original hardwood, and Tony and his crew did an immaculate job. Recommended Portofino Floors (CheaperFloors.com) in San Leadro to purchase flooring. Picked flooring up from Portofino a few days later and brought to my house. Let it sit for a couple weeks to acclimate. Then took the team one week to rip out old flooring (parquet and carpet) and install new flooring plus baseboards. Living room, dining room, hallway and one bedroom - about 700 square feet. Glued down engineered flooring on slab in a 1964 house. While 99% of the furniture and stuff was packed up, Tony and his team kindly moved the three big pieces for me (sideboard and two large desks). After finishing, there was one small area that I felt needed baseboard where the team did not put it originally (funky little area at the inside garage door). I told Tony and his crew at Specialty Hardwood that I wanted to review them on Yelp. I have waited several months in order to comment on not only 1) how they did the work and 2) how well it looked immediately afterwards, but also the critical part 3) how it has held up and have we noticed any defects that popped out with dragging/dropping our furniture back in place and then after living with the new floor for a bit. Executive summary, now several months later is: Very good experience, still stayed in house through whole job, results were lovely right after... And it's lovely with no defects as of today. Better-than-expected on all fronts. Job: Tony's crew was focused, fast, kept on schedule, showed up on time, gave updates what they would do that day, thoughtful boss and crew, very on top of sawdust management, price was good, got help from them wrangling a few items that needed more manpower than I had. And Tony left me with material and instructions how to fix any damage from abuse I might hand out to my poor floor and he left the extra Bona High Traffic floor sealant to help make any mistakes (that I will create over time) vanish nicely after a light sanding. I had the absolute pleasure of working with Tony and his crew at Specialty Hardwood floors recently to install a completely new white oak, finish in place floor. Installing a new floor is not fun. We had to move 3/4 of our belongings into our garage and live in our master with 4 dogs for the duration of the construction. This included our fridge & stove. Needless to say, we were a little stressed out before we even got to the flooring. I chose to install white oak, strip flooring to be finished in place with a water based sealer. Tony & crew were to do the demo on carpet & lino, save my base boards, install and finish the floor, and finally replace the base boards for my painter. #1) Tony kept in constant contact & showed up with the crew right on time the first day #2) The crew's focus and work ethic is amazing. The demo on 800 square feet was done in a day, along with laying the boards in the first room #3) The crew always got me if there was a question on how I wanted a corner run or finished, design elements, which direction to run the wood in certain rooms, etc. They did not make any decisions without working on with me & it was all done perfectly #4) Even with the dogs I chose a water based finish, so I was able to stay in the house for the entire process. #5 - They finished a little early... yes, contractors who finish early or on time should get 100 stars in my book! The floors are amazing and more than I could have ever hoped for. Unfortunately when the movers put the fridge and stove back... the scratched the floor. Tony was nice enough to come back and refinish those spots for no charge. I even got an extra coat on my kitchen as we had left over finishing product. I can not say enough good things about Tony & Specialty Hardwood. I am just grateful they were available to do my job. I will see them next for finishing the floors one day.
