Absolutely delicious! We came by for the roadside lunch option. We had the week special, king salmon and cheese sandwich, which had a great crunch with rich flavors. The house blend burger was also incredible. It had a light, buttery, fluffy brioche bun with a big juicy patty. Funny enough, a highlight of the meal was the tomato used in the burger. We really wanted to like this place, but the food was just bland. We ordered the summer salad, fried chicken, and mushroom pasta. The salad lacked flavor, the fried chicken was moist and crispy, but not as flavorful as we were hoping, and the pasta was also just bland. Portion sizes were fine for us, not sure why other reviews complained about that, but it wasn't for us. When you pay, it defaults to 18% gratuity, which I generally have no issues with, but it seemed strange to default and have the waiter hovering when you finish. Inadequate at every level. I went to number5kithcen for brunch and was disappointed by service and mediocre food. The service was incredibly poor. It seems like they may have been understaffed. It took 15 minutes for us to be sat down at a table, even though there were tables available. Once we were sat they took several minutes to bring us a menu and water. Once we ordered the food it took a fairly long time for them to serve us even our appetizer of bread. Another pair next to us had a similar experience. They canceled one of their orders due to the delay and had to wait a while to receive their check after asking for it. I do appreciate that they acknowledged their lacking by giving us two glasses of wine. I don't drink wine, much less at that early in the morning, and it improved nothing but it was appreciated none the less. The servers were not poor, when they reached us they treated us quite well. It just seemed that they were understaffed. I stayed with the hopes that the food would redeem my experience. It did not. I ordered the pork hash. I received a handful of small pieces of pork, decorated with a few pieces of cauliflower and a single room temp egg. The portions were incredibly small given the cost, the food was lukewarm and was bland. The significant cost, poor service and mediocre food, left me extremely disappointed. read more

This is such a great addition to the SF peninsula. The food is delicious and beautiful, always focused on seasonal and local ingredients. I personally love the minimalist, no-fuss decor. Limited menu, small servings and overpriced. Understand being new and small restaurant they are keeping menu small (3 entree choices and 3 appetizer options) however will need to improve options. Appetizer 5 large roasted asparagus $15+ tasty but overpriced. Fish in broth tasty for sure but too small portion.... Friend had steel oats with mushrooms. Portion good however oats so to be expected. I'm all for supporting local and new restaurants but concerned they won't get repeat diners. Staff nice but with exception of the gentleman who was knowledgeable the high school girl seemed out of her element. We won't be back. read more

We went in for brunch today, and loved it. It's not inexpensive, but it is absolutely worth it. Delicious food, great service, and our waiter Henry was the owner and chef too, so could really speak to us about the dishes to help us choose. We ate here a few days ago and the food was delicious. We had a salad, and pizza. The salad was crunchy with a light tangy dressing, and the pizza was beautifully cooked with a chewy crust, melty cheese, and quality tomato sauce. The ambience is very nice, and the owner/chef is very accommodating. There is a steady stream of pizza take out, as well as indoor and outdoor seating. There are lots of plants inside which give the space a nice outdoorsy feel even though you are indoors. We really enjoyed our dinner. read more

Decided to try number5kitchen for my birthday dinner and it did not disappoint! Cute/minimalist space, gorgeous, fresh ingredients plated to perfection and lovely clean flavors that left me wanting more. We had the chilled tomato soup (refreshing and delicious), stone fruit/prosciutto plate (best figs and pluots I've had all summer), both pastas (freshly divine!) and the panna cotta dessert (simple and clean). Service was personal and spot on. Super grateful for Henry's vision and hope this restaurant is around for a long time! read more

GREAT new restaurant in downtown San Carlos. Rotating menu of fresh ingredients. Love both dinner and brunch. Brunch highlight was Dungeness crab scramble (perfectly done eggs & tasty crab). Dinner highlights were the duck confit (perfectly crispy skin), nettle pasta, and gently poached fish in broth. They also do really good citrus salads. We've already been there 3 times, with very consistent quality each time. Really nice to have a healthy alternative to some of the heavier Italian choices you get in downtown SC. read more

My husband and I wanted to try this new San Carlos addition for brunch today because a friend told me how great their dining experience was there. We were not disappointed! This isn't your typical breakfast spot. I ordered the "Soft Scramble" and my husband ordered the "Bubbles and Squeak". Chef Henry Eng married the flavors of the prosciutto, asparagus and eggs to perfection. The rosemary and cream mixed with the egg was quite tasty, not heavy and overpowering. My husband really enjoyed his vegetable hashbrown that accompanied his bacon and eggs. He even asked for my slices of bread to soak up every bit off his plate. Our plates were squeaky clean! My husband also ordered a Modern Times stout and commented that their drink menu had very "choice" selections. Again, not your ordinary beers like most places. We will definitely be back to try their dinner menu. Can't wait! read more

Fantastic new place in San Carlos! We were walking by and noticed it open and we are so thrilled we decided to give it a try! For dinner, they do a three course tasting menu and you have two appetizers and two main courses to choose from. Parsnip soup was amazing and all the ingredients were very fresh. Dessert was a lemon curd with merIngue that was delicious. Added bonus, they source from the San Carlos farmers market! Price is VERY reasonable ($35 per person), especially for quality and portions. Excellent fresh organic delightful food that you don't have to feel guilty eating! All the ingredients are of the highest quality and the food sings because of it. My family stopped in yesterday for brunch. The pork shoulder and veggie hash is an instant fave. We all loved the Bubble and Squeak. The crispy bacon was to die for! The parsnip soup was fresh and balanced with a slightly different twist that owner Henry said was a carrot pesto. My husband loved the mushroom risotto. The dessert plate with lemon curd and meringue with citrus was the perfect ending to a palate pleasing meal. The decor is clean and modern, allowing the food to speak for itself. Tasty new place on Laurel; trying to be a little pop of SF in SC. We went for brunch. One of us tried the pancakes with berry sauce and really enjoyed them. The other took the duck confit, which was delicious but paired with a small salad and no bread/carb. We suggested to the chef that he add a little something to the duck dish ($20+) and he seemed amenable to feedback. We'll be back to try dinner! Seems like a nice place for a casual date. read more

We were excited to try a new restaurant in the neighborhood and left feeling disappointed. I wanted a small portion of pasta so I asked if I can order the kids menu item and they said no. I even offered to order an appetizer so it would be the same $ as a normal entree and they still said no. Why? There was no one in the restaurant and they still were not able to accommodate. I had no choice but to order a main pasta dish and it was SO bad. Completely flavorless. Additionally, my husband ordered the fried chicken and when it came out, we asked for hot sauce and they looked at us like we were crazy and said the flavor of the breading is enough. Um what?! The dish was so poorly done the chicken had NO FLAVOR. If you're going to charge $20 a plate, the food better taste good and the service should NOT SUCK. read more

We had a fish dish over a bed of vegetables and this amazing broth! I could have had a bowl of the broth alone. The vegetables were incredibly fresh. We also had a bowl of mushroom porridge with egg. What a gem! I am so happy I found this restaurant. The food is so fresh and delicious. It's a small menu, but that didn't matter since everything we ordered (starters, main, dessert, drinks) was amazing. I even ordered a second scallop crudo appetizer because I couldn't get over how incredible it was. The owner was very gracious and introduced himself to us. And the prices were reasonable considering the quality and presentation of the food. It is well on its way to a Michelin recommendation. read more

Great new addition to Laurel Street in San Carlos. I had dinner here with my husband on a Friday night. I absolutely loved my entree, a mushroom pasta -- I could have eaten a second bowl. We also had the hamachi appetizer (very nice) and a salad (solid but not exceptional). And I had a lovely glass of sparking rose. There was only one dessert option when I visited - an olive oil cake - which didn't really appeal to me, so I didn't partake. The ambiance and servers were great. We had a lovely meal here. It's a neighborhood spot that's grown up and unpretentious. The food was very good. It's a prix fixe three course meal, with an optional pasta course. Each course had two options. So a couple can go and simply say "we'll have one of everything." Portions are medium sized. We were not stuffed at the end, but pleasantly full. The service was done with a light touch. This restaurant nicely fills a gap in the San Carlos dining scene, and we'll go back. read more

The house-cured king salmon sandwich was excellent and what a way to enjoy King salmon. The chicory salad with Asian pears was underwhelming, and the vinegrette was a bit overwhelming and thicker than I had expected. It was not as well mixed as I would have expected as some pieces of chicory had slabs of the "vinegrette" on it. The burger started out promising but it was slightly undercooked in the middle. I chose the Beef Bourguignon for 2. I was instructed to boil the pouches (one with the Bourguignon and other with the mixed baby potatoes ) for 8 min and serve with fresh parsley also supplied.
