First night in Maine went to Nunans. The place is decorated how you would expect with all of the lobster paraphernalia, floats, buoys hanging from the ceiling, and lobster cages out front. I got the 1.25 pound lobster boiled and clam chowder. Everything was delicious. Our waitress Carla was a bit rude and once our food was brought to table never checked in on us once. We were driving up the Maine coast and stopped at Nunan's for lunch. It was an OK day so we took a picnic table outside. Mistake #1. Wife loved lobster rolls, so she ordered one. Mistake #2. I don't really appreciate lobster so I ordered a hot dog. Mistake $3. The inside of Nunan's is so cool - a total nautical vibe, so our first mistake was not sitting inside. The lobster roll was tiny with only 4 pieces of lobster. Looking at what people inside ordered it was mostly whole lobster. Mistake #2 was not ordering whole lobsters. The hot dog also was tiny and simply boiled. Mistake #3 was not ordering something more substantial. The blueberry muffin and clan chowder were both very good. Our server was fantastic. Quick, cheerful. Cash only. To be fair we didn't sit in the right place or order the right food, but what we did order wasn't very good. Nunan's is a must stop. We arrived early on a night that weather was iffy to ensure that we got a seat inside. In early June, we were able to get a table for 5 without any fuss. This place is horrible! Service was horrible and this bitch waitress comes chasing my family to the car telling us that 18% tip was customary and she was mad we had only tipped her $8! They ask for cash only without stating that anywhere that it is cash only with an ATM holding fees. They do this to avoid IRS taxes and card fees despite placing two unexplained taxes on our receipt. Fun - old fashion feel to the place - which hasn't changed all that much from our last visit - over 20 years ago! (obviously we aren't from the area otherwise...) There are outdoor picnic tables (new) and the pretty much the same indoor area. The ceilings are decorated with all kinds of nautical items and walls with newspaper articles from over the years. The clientele seem to be 75 % locals and the others tourists. We came for whole lobster for the most part and we were not disappointed in the 1.5 lb ones we received which were $$$ less than other places. Like before they came with a bag of potato chips, a roll and some pickles! For a whopping $1.50 you could splurge for a baked potato. We have had a couple good experiences here so we were excited to go back, but there was a 2 day power outage. When it re-opened, we had the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. The rolls were rock hard and stale, the lettuce in the salad was brown and rotten, and the dinner was even worse. My husband and son got the "special" which was 2 lobsters each, and I got the lobster roll. The roll it came in was inedible, also stale and hard. And I had to spit out the claw meat in the roll because it was so "fishy" tasting and a bad consistency. My husband and son said both of their lobsters tasted terrible and fishy, the claws were grainy and a very odd texture. They were kind of shrunken, and it tasted like they had been frozen then steamed later. They were not fresh. We were so worried about getting food poisoning. I'm wondering if because of the power outage, they didn't want to lose money and instead served very old and bad food. The waitress was extremely rude and not friendly, the inside of the building is old and dirty looking. They sat us by the bathrooms and there was no fresh air, it was so hot in there. Our experience was similar to that of a 2024 reviewer. We'd been coming to Nunan's for many years and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. On this occasion we arrived early when there were no customers on line outside the restaurant and proceeded towards the front door, only to be berated and screamed at by a "hostess" for not waiting by a newly installed sign at the edge of the empty terrace. Extremely rude and unwelcoming experience at Nunan's. We arrived around 5pm with our kids, in-laws, and nephews to grab a drink and a few appetizers before dinner elsewhere. The restaurant was nearly empty--just a quarter full inside and completely empty outside--so I politely told the hostess we were just there for drinks and apps and asked if it would be better for us to sit at one of the many unused outdoor picnic tables. Without missing a beat, she loudly and dismissively told us they wouldn't serve us at all unless we were there for full dinner. We came back to Nunan's after a 12 year hiatus and surprise, surprise, they still feature lobster, lobster and lobster. Our server was prompt to take our drink order and after returning, took our orders for twin 1 1/4 pounders with Lays chips and pickles. Nunan's is a no frills place overlooking a tidal estuary and the ocean breeze was refreshing. This spot is just a straight up tourist trap. It was recommended to us as the best spot for lobster but I've had better (and cheaper) lobster at chain steakhouses in the middle of the country. The lobster was mediocre, not sweet, and just tasted of water. It is served with the worst stale roll, 2 very sad looking pickle slices, and a bag of Lay's. The blueberry pie was alright but it wasn't even served warm. It was just so lackluster and unmemorable. We had much better lobster meals at others spots that this one is a definite skip. We came based on reviews found here. Drove out to Maine to eat lobster, and we found some great lobster here, along with an excellent lobster roll. It was drizzling preside, but luckily they had tables available inside 'the yellow door'. The inside is full of stuff related to lobster. Old photos, traps, etc. Lots of people walking around taking photos. Menu had quite a few choices if you didn't want lobster, but if you want lobster, there is a platter if the full lobsters on it! This is, by far, the best place to get lobster while in Kennebunkport/Kennebunk. The lobster was caught that morning and served to us hot out of the steamer with chips, a roll and pickle. The special the night we went were two 1 & 1/8 lb lobsters that were cooked to perfection. We ended the meal with a hot blueberry cobbler that was amazing. Our server was amazing. Kind, answered our questions about the history of the "hut" and was very attentive. The only thing that would have made the dining experience a little better is if they had small buckets to drain the lobsters in. The tray gets rather messy with all the liquid and lobster meat and shells. They don't offer hand wipes, but there is a hand washing station in the dining area. THANK GOD! I had to wash my hands twice and felt for the poor woman who sat next to the station. There is plenty of seating. The inside of the restaurant is not air conditioned. The windows do open and there is a fan to move the air around. I can't imagine being inside on a hot summer night. The do not take reservations. CASH only. No debit/credit cards. Our family has been going to Nunan's for 30+ years and always adored it. Tonight was the last time, and we didn't even make it to the front door. Empty terrace, Monday night, 3 people chatting at the edge of the terrace (half blocking the WAIT HERE sign). My mother in law and daughter walk around the little group to get to the front door when IMMEDIATELY and aggressively a woman from the trio yells out to stand back asking "CAN YOU READ", proceeding to move the gentleman aside to shake the metal sign furiously in front of my 3-year old's face. Unacceptable behavior, screaming that she's the owner and that she doesnt need "YOU PEOPLE" (how dare my mother in law speak french to my daughter in Maine), and that we should go back to whatever country we're from. By that point we're all pretty rattled, my 3-year old is crying from all the aggressivity and screaming, and the lady is still ranting about how we're not welcome and should go somewhere else. All this...because we missed the sign and started making our way to the front door through an EMPTY terrace. The owner is clearly unwell, and your money isn't welcome if you're Canadian - go somewhere else. We went to Mabel's. Food was just as good and the waiters welcomed us with smiles.
