Military community please read this if you have United Concordia for insurance!!!! I went in about a year ago for a simple checkup and to discuss a broken tooth. During the appointment, I specifically explained that my insurance would likely deny X-rays because I had already had them done less than a year earlier. They told me they would still run everything through insurance and, if it wasn't covered, they would honor a new patient special rate. At no point were X-ray costs discussed. When I checked out, I paid around $1,000 for the crown and buildup. No one mentioned owing anything additional for X-rays. They also recommended a deep cleaning that would cost about $800 for the first round. When I later asked if we could remove services insurance wouldn't cover, I was told no because it was part of their "standard of care." I couldn't afford the extra treatment, so I didn't return. About a year later, the crown started irritating my gums and the tooth began throbbing. When I went back, I was told I needed a root canal and that I should have done the deep cleaning. I requested a predetermination, left, and switched dentists. A few months later, my insurance reviewed the claims and determined I had been overcharged based on the crown codes used. They issued a refund, and I thought the situation was resolved. Then I received a letter stating I owed $260 on the same account, marked over 90 days past due and sent to internal collections. After my husband spent time sorting things out with insurance, the office manager of Nut Tree told me that I had never paid for my X-rays and that, because of that, she technically should not have issued the refund I received. She said I could keep the refund, but the $260 balance would still stand. The voicemail only added to the confusion because the X-rays were never presented as an outstanding balance when I paid for treatment. As far as I knew, my account had been settled based on the amount I was charged at checkout. It wasn't until the insurance issues were being reviewed later that the unpaid X-rays were even brought up. What makes this even more frustrating is that I specifically raised concerns about insurance coverage before the X-rays were taken. Looking back, I later discovered that financial responsibility language was included within the exam consent paperwork, but there was never a clear discussion that I could end up personally responsible for hundreds of dollars if those X-rays were denied. I tried calling multiple times and never got a response. The moment I put everything in writing via email, I got a quick reply and a much friendlier tone. At that point, I agreed to pay because I was exhausted by the stress. I'm pregnant, and I did not have the emotional fight to keep going over something that never should have escalated like this. Furthermore, this company wants feedback to be better per responses to reviews but I can't even get the office manager on the phone to talk about my experience. My advice: get EVERYTHING in writing. Read everything. Get everything; pricing/payments/insurance coverage amounts on every service before doing the service. Do not sign anything you don't fully understand, Don't trust their word because they won't honor it unless on paper. And if they are pushing services that don't feel right or don't fit your situation, walk out. (I wish I would've). Absolute scam of a dentist's office. They will recommend services that are not covered by your insurance. They will state that the insurance is not up to the current times and require you to add services in addition to the services that are covered by insurance. If you decline, they will pressure you and pressure you and deny treatment unless you accept all of the treatments requiring hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket. I am double covered through insurance. They will even bribe you with rebates that take $50 off, etc. Will not be going back. read more

This office is very professional driven, but sometimes lack in customer service. I wonder if they are too big and busy to handle customer issues. I had to cancel an appointment due to flu like symptoms, but since my dentist had no available openings until December, the staff told me they would call me later to make an appointment. Unfortunately, after two months, I have yet to received a call from them. I also found that you cannot get multiple services (annual check up and cleaning) done the same day. Wow this place is bad. I had an appointment at noon And they decided to push me up to 10 am because the dentist wanted to leave early. Mind you, they're supposed to stay open till 3. I had to reorganize my whole schedule. And I still barely made it. They have one restroom and it was out of toilet paper. When I asked the front desk person she told me I was annoying for asking. She eventually got it but with a huff and a puff. Yeah real good customer service. And they give you really outdated advice. How about Novocaine aftercare. Worst dental experience. I was in severe pain from a zirconia crown that they made in house. The tooth was badly shaped causing changes to my jaw movement and it limited tongue space because of how bulky it was. I asked for help several times and was denied. I called in pain and one of the front desk workers giggled cause I cried. I knew it felt wrong and they wouldn't listen or try to help. I spent the night at the ER because the pain was so bad it affected my head and eyes. I didn't eat for days from the pain. I was able to get help from my childhood dentist which confirmed the tooth placement and shape was horrible causing issues to my tongue and surrounding muscles. He said zirconia has to be well shaped if not it causes issues. Thank goodness for him. Do not ever go to Nut tree smiles. If you have an emergency they won't care or help. They give excuses blaming it on tmj or clenching and grinding rather than looking at their work. If you get a crown send it out to be made. They do a terrible job. read more

So my son decided to go in here based upon the $59 cleaning and x-rays. By the time he left, he was quoted $1100 for to replace a filling $5000 for a root canal and additional deep cleaning with estimates well over $10,000 total . Never was able to get his cleaning done since that was well over $1000 additionally. I can't believe this place is in business. He went back over to our trusted dentist where he normally goes said there was nothing wrong with his filling. Does not need a root canal and clean his teeth for $150. I went in for a cleaning and I got there to the office and was told that I'm only getting a consult that day and they'd have to book me out for a cleaning. January 21, 2025 Time to get a new crown. This wasn't just cleanings anymore~ this was the big time. I wanted to run away! (I had recently enough had to go to the emergency room~twice~ for breathing issues and so the idea of having my mouth open and feeling like I couldn't breathe couldn't move had to suppress the need to swallow had to suppress the panic....better have a really good dentist. And I thank God I do. "To be the best you have to beat the best" and I had the honor and privilege of having "Dr. Tiana".... rarely does one meet a person of this caliber. She is so smart! She is extremely knowledgeable in this most difficult of fields - dentistry. Such a delightful personality! In fact she is so good at her craft I actually said at one point "This woman really does deserve $1000 an hour! Give this woman a raise!"...and even in today's climate culturally speaking~ I wanted to tip her! So even though I spent years always going to the place always voted "the BEST" in town I nominate NUT TREE SMILES for Best Dental Office in Vacaville (as long as they have her on board they will always deserve it). The whole staff was just great that day as always (Jade, her assistant, was so much fun! I have the greatest dental hygienist probably in all of California - Stephanie. So it was a lot of fun that day ~can you imagine! Yeah I know I need to get out more but when was the last time you said that about your dentist office!?) I waited to post this to see if the one experience was a fluke but after repeated experiences, now it's confirmed. This place saw me for an emergency tooth fracture on a molar from an old metal filling. I was told the only option was for a root canal and crown. The whole process dragged across three weeks from scheduling the orthodontist, the crown fitting and any other fitting issues. The orthodontist was a rush job, not willing to give more pain injections after I complained of radiating pain upthrough my sinus inducing a migraine. The temp filling was almost gone by the time the crown was ready. The crown itself had been placed with so much cement, it came out from under the crown and started to irritate the surrounding gums. I let them know something was wrong. They filed down what they thought was enough of the excess cement and let it be. The remaining exposed cement eventually broke off, took a part of the crown with it and left a sizeable gap between the remaining crown and the gum line. The pain was indescribable and became a scheduling nightmare, only to then be told I had gums recession that needed "special treatment" to promote gum growth. No thanks. Pain management was never a concern, nor a priority. The financial aspect of every visit was a heavily promoted thing, offering metal fillings and crowns as cheaper options after telling me that they cause more problems in the long run. I've never felt so disregarded in my own pain experience and financially disrespected, to offer the same type of filling/crown that caused the problem originally. read more

Please beware! MY husband and I both went there and they charged us over $800 more than allowed. Our insurance co pays were almost doubled for crowns and they also overcharged for a filling. Please check with your dental plan for your co pays before going there. I was told by the management that they have a computer glitch. My husband went there a year and a half before I did. So, that was a long and ongoing glitch that I assume is still happening. Watch out for yourselves. Don't be scammed. We are both with Kaiser who uses Delta dental care. If you have found that you have been greatly overcharged, then insist on a refund. It is my opinion from what we have been through that this is likely happening to a lot of seniors. While the office is clean and the staff are friendly, I wouldn't recommend Nut Tree Smiles. When I called to schedule appointments for myself and my husband, we were never told that we wouldn't be receiving standard cleanings--even though that was the purpose of our visit. At my appointment, I received X-rays and was given a "spit test" to determine if I needed a deep cleaning. They told me I'd need to return the following month for the cleaning. At that second appointment, I was told I'd have to pay $130 out-of-pocket for a laser treatment not covered by insurance. When I said I didn't want the laser, the dentist responded, "Well, the deep cleaning is kind of pointless without it." I waited 25 minutes past my appointment time, then another 15 minutes in the chair before the dentist came in. I eventually agreed to the laser at a reduced price of $75 just to move forward. During the cleaning, the water ran out and the laser malfunctioned--causing even more delays. The whole visit felt disorganized and frustrating. My husband's experience was just as disappointing. His first appointment was scheduled incorrectly--they only took an X-ray of a single tooth. At his second appointment, they took more X-rays and performed the same spit test. Then they told him he needed a deep cleaning, that it would cost $1,300 out-of-pocket, and that they could only clean half his mouth that day--he'd have to come back for the other half at a later appointment. He didn't want or need a deep cleaning--he just wanted a standard cleaning--but they refused to provide one. Afterward, we spoke with another dentist who confirmed that the spit test is not a valid way to diagnose the need for a deep cleaning. A proper evaluation involves measuring gum health and pocket depth--not saliva. Nut Tree Smiles seems more focused on upselling unnecessary, expensive treatments than providing appropriate care. Our experience with Nut Tree Smile Dental was the worst experience with a dentist we've ever had. It was very painful, expensive, dishonest and unpleasant. The work that was done by Dr. Laura Chang fell completely apart hours later making the original problem much worse causing immense pain. Sandra (in reception )and Alina (the officer manager) were unbelievably unprofessional, dismissive, abrasive, defensive, combative, and rude. What a terrible experience..my mom was in the industry so I grew up in a honest practice. Once she retired and I moved, I unfortunately had to find somewhere else for a micro chip on my central incisor (front tooth) due to my dog jumping on me. The dentist here (female) told me I would absolutely require a crown and quoted me well over $1000 with the lack of confidence that they could even get the color to match. She even added in some horror story about her experience as a child to add to the sale. I called my mom and she said to ask about dental bonding (a fill), the dentist said (with attitude) that it may not even last me my 40 minute drive home. I insisted and had it done for $70. Here I am almost 2 years later, still very intact and you can't even notice it as it matches my tooth color perfectly. For someone to upcharge me thousands of dollars to shave down a perfectly healthy tooth is excessive and unfair in my opinion. I am grateful to have a family member in the industry otherwise I may have fallen victim to their scam. Go somewhere else, trust me. If you are checking these reviews, you can see a common theme: apparently, this dental office literally upcharges every patient, every time, on all dental procedures -- whether they are necessary or not. They tried to do this to me: I walked out. I know I have good dental insurance that covers procedures and costs because I pay my hard earned money for it, and I review my coverages before going to the dentist. So why after excessive deep dental probing of my healthy pink gums (I called the dentist out on that!) were they trying to charge me $130 for a "deep cleaning" -- with a laser? Mass production, profit driven dentistry........ I moved to the area and needed a new dentist. Gave them a legitimate try. Went several times, but only saw an actual dentist for about 2 minutes on my first visit. Had one tooth removed as a preventative measure. The next time I went back I was told "everything looks great....... for now, but there will be"inevitably" be another issue that you need a procedure for." I was initially told I should think about it, there's no rush, and didn't need the procedure right away. But then someone comes in the room with a cost estimate and asking when I'd like to schedule that procedure. She seemed put off when I said I'd think about it. It's like she was getting commission if I got the procedure. Their goal here seems to be have the dentist spend as little time (or no time) with a patient and then suggest preventative procedures which will inevitably cost you more and make them more money. If additional procedures are needed, that's understandable. But they seem wayyyyy too eager to schedule those things and charge you. If that's the case, then dentist could at least have the courtesy to do a cursory stop by to one of your appointments. Would not go back. Will not recommend. read more

So, my wife and I have been retired for several years now. Prior to retirement we both had very good Dental coverage and went to the dentist on a regular basis. I had not seen a dentist in about 3 years and we both decided to get a supplemental coverage through Kaiser. So wifee decided to schedule us both for a checkup and get our teeth cleaned. The supplemental coverage had a list of dentistry we could pick from. She went with "Nut Tree Smiles Dentistry". Prior to going, I read the reviews and saw a lot of patients complaining about Deep Cleaning and paying extra for it. Today was my visit as a new patient. The Staff appeared to be friendly and they took a lot of xrays of my teeth. After the xrays I was expecting to get my teeth cleaned ( Like I have for many years) prior to the Dentist doing his exam. That did not happen. Instead the Dental Assistant said that this Dentist likes to do a swab test to see how bad my gums are. I later asked the Dental Assistant how my test was and she told me it was high but nothing serious and it was about 54 what ever that meant. At this point, I meet with the Dentist and he asked if I had any issues with my teeth. He does a gum periodontal test and looks at my teeth. He also found a tooth that was cracked that needed to be crowned. When he was done, he tells me that I need a Deep Cleaning of my gums and teeth and it would take at least three procedures. I asked if my insurance is going to cover this and he told me that he would have a front office assistant come and talk to me. I asked him if my teeth was going to get cleaned and he said at a later date. The front office assistant came in and gave me all the amounts that I would have to pay out of pocket. Why did I even get a supplemental Dental through Kaiser. Crazy!!! I told her that I just wanted a cleaning of my teeth because I knew it was all covered by the supplemental Insurance. The front office Assistant told me that I did not qualify for a cleaning because the dentist would not approve of it because I needed a Deep Cleaning. Do we see the common theme yet. I really thought I was going in for my visit today to get a good teeth cleaning and a full checkup, since I have not been to a dentist for 3 years. I would not recommend this place. It's all about the money!! Go figure. They are part of Smiles Generations corporate owned. Come to find so was last Dentist I went to Vacaville Dentistry. Needed extractions and denture. Never went over pros and cons of different types of dentures. Just wanted to charge over $1500 for one they recommended. My insurance had three types. They made excuses why not to use. My insurance has set prices they can charge me. Range was $530 to $787 and set prices for extractions which they wanted more. Of course they didn't want to provide. Had misc. other costs: Consultation, custom trays, temp denture. My teeth were very loose I thought they needed immediate attention. They set 1st appoint for 31/2 weeks out. Now I have infection, went to another dentist. She went over dentures available and talked about pros and cons. Main thing was the one NutTree wanted to do, if one or more of remaining teeth came to a point of extraction, I would need to get a whole new denture! The one I'm going with now can be modified and reused (Immediate Denture) also she is charging me the set prices made by insurance for both extractions and denture and none of the other misc. charges. She put me on antibiotics and is doing extractions next week which will still be before my 1st appointment was scheduled with Nut Tree. In my opinion the last two Smiles Generation dentist's offices were not patient caring, just much can they make off of you! read more

I'll try and make this short and easy. I'd been going to the same dentist for twenty years. My whole family went to him, and he was great. Then we moved from the South Bay to Vacaville and went here. I got x rays, a couple restorative fillings, a recommendation for a deep cleaning, and a recommendation for a root canal and a crown. They wouldn't do a regular cleaning which was frustrating, even though I asked. Only a deep cleaning, which I refused because it's would have cost around $800 out of pocket. Now here's where it gets interesting. A few weeks later I drove an hour and a half to see my old dentist. He looked at my x rays and told me with confidence that I'd been ripped off. He said not only did I not need a deep cleaning, but I didn't need a root canal OR ANY of the restorative fillings I'd already had done. I did need a crown, which he did. But he advised me not to come back here. He said look around and talk to some other dentists in Vacaville. He also told me he's had patients over the years go to cash grab places like this, so I guess it's not all that uncommon. Everyone here was nice enough, but I felt very taken advantage of. read more

My husband had 2 crowns put in by them 1 year ago. There were 3 crowns in a row the one in the middle was put in by Creekside family dentistry 15 years ago and is fine the 2 that Nut Tree Smiles put in on either side of that one both failed one completely fell out and the other one cracked to nothing. He went back in to have them put them back in because our insurance will only allow a crown to be replaced after 5 years and they told him that there was no warranty on the crowns that he would have to pay for the crowns out of pocket and he told them the one crown fell out like it came unglued and they said that had nothing to do with them. He told them that they are telling him that they offer an inferior product and said he would have to come out of pocket to put the same product in. He told them he would rather pay out of pocket for another dentist to do it than pay them to do it again so that's what he did. Oh and not to mention when the red headed heavy set girl tech was placing one of the crowns she dropped the crown 4x on the floor and ended up having to have another tech come in to put it in and she did it with no problem. Worst experience with a dentist I've ever had! I made an appointment for a cleaning. I said I wanted a minimum amount of xrays and they said they couldn't do that. So twenty xrays later, many camera photos, and the big machine that goes around your head and an hour and a half later I still did not have a cleaning. Then a girl comes in with a three or four page estimate to go over the charges with you. $1,100 for a cleaning and $545 to replace one tiny filling. Ridiculous! Do people really fall for this? DO NOT COME HERE!!!! SHOULD GET 0 STARS !! I came to this place located by Baskin Robbins in vacaville. I made a appointment here since my dental office did not have anything until March 2023. She starts doing my X-ray and jammed the camera underneath my tongue I immediately reacted. I then noticed that she did not wipe anything down in the room . She was touching the camera, switch for the X-ray machine,placing that cameras in my mouth with that same dirty gloves .I questioned her and the cleanliness of this office. Dr.Chang finally comes in and checks my gums . She is very short and not welcoming. She clearly came from a private practice because her patient care is horrible.No people skills . 2 hours later........ The office tells me to come back at 4pm. To remind you . I been here since 9:09am. I could not get out of work so I called the office to let them know . Allie - Office receptionist answered and tried to see if there was any other availability.Nothing until Mid Feb. I advised I was frustrated that I was there for 2 hours for only to have X-rays completed this morning . Allie- Then she starts getting very aggressive with me . Telling me I was 25-30mins late . Changes for improvement: 1) Staff should be in uniform.Jeans and flannel are sloppy. 2) Please sanitize everything in front of the patient. 3) Music is inappropriate. I don't want to hear about someone depressed and taking shots of alcohol while I am waiting . 4) Smile ...It takes less muscles in the face then for all of you to look so unhappy. 5)Training your receptionists. You can hear a smile in the phone . You can also hear a very unhappy depressed individual. 6) Do not treat your patients like cattle . 7)Front window is broken and boarded up . I have the worst fear of the dentist and hadn't been in a long time so I was way overdue for a deep cleaning. The staff communicated very well about what was covered and what I would pay. I was vocal about my concerns being nervous and they reassured that I could ask for breaks, more numbing etc. The front office staff are attentive and so sweet. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews, communicate with the staff and you'll be fine. The costs are very standard for any dental office, if you have an issue with the cost talk to your insurance, don't give the staff a hard time!! They're just doing their job and they do very well at it. Very grateful for the team and how supportive they were to ensure I had a good experience with them. read more

Your administrative staff is a piece of work. I havent seen such un professional staff anywhere let alone a dentist office. Its unfortunate for people who have to deal with them. When I asked the Hygienist for clarification about the charges, she seemed unwilling to address my concerns and didn't explain anything. Instead, she took me back to the front desk without resolving the issue, leaving me feeling dismissed. it seemed like she didn't want to deal with my questions, which was frustrating and unprofessional. I expected better communication and customer service. Patients deserve to be treated better. They don't care about me they just want easy money without complaints. read more

These people overcharge so be sure to check with your provider before you commit, I learned the hard way. I'm waiting for my refund check. We just believe the price they give us. I called my provider for a completely different reason and the lady that answered the phone told me I over paid, she told me to file a grievance, which I did. Took 30 days but I'm getting a refund of over $600, I only had to pay $450. Imagine how many people they are cheating out of their money. FACT. I'm looking for another dentist. D.T. read more

They just want to push unnecessary treatments on you. I have never before been told I need a deep cleaning. I have never been told I have gingivitis. This dental office told me I have Severe Periodontitis and need deep cleaning. I did need a cavity filling fixed. All was going to cost out of pocket $1,300. I got a second opinion from a different dental office they did my regular cleaning and fixed my filling all out pocket was $55. I didn't need a deep cleaning. Moved so decided to try a dentist closer to my house. Big mistake. Went in and was told my gums are horrible and I need all this work. 4 separate visits and about $1000 out of pocket (can only imagine what it would cost my insurance) Didn't even clean my teeth and said that will do no good since I need this. Well they tried this on the wrong person. Been going to the dentist like clockwork since I had teeth. Never any issues at all. Went to my old dentist the very next day and, surprise! No issues at all. So if you don't like keeping your money and are a fan of unnecessary dental work, then this is the dentist for you! read more

I will continue my care at this office because of him! He made me feel safe & comfortable during a big dental procedure that came as a surprise. He has wonderful bedside manner & even plays relaxing (Disney) music and completely kept me at ease. He answered all my questions & never rushed or pressured me to make a decision. I'm excited that I found this gem & happy for my next appointment! My teeth never felt cleaner & so happy that I feel confident with my new oral regime; that he helped get me started on.
