Have been bowling at Nutmeg for a couple decades. It's the only 'classic' bowling alley left in lower Fairfield county, and they actually care about the condition of the lanes and offer a more serious bowling experience, not just a 'party' environment. Front desk staff is always friendly, the pro shop is EXCELLENT, and the food is usually really good. Everything is reasonably priced, with specials on different days. They offer a lot of league opportunities, plus some of the more 'modern' things like Extreme Bowling. Nutmeg Bowl is located under the rest of the shopping plaza (I believe directly underneath a gym). You need to take the outer road around the plaza to assess it. There's parking under the structure and outdoors. There are soooo many lanes. I had no idea bowling was still so popular, and no, all the lanes were not in use, but there were so many signs and announcements for groups I suspect there are times it's absolutely hopping. There were lots of balls around all different weights, and everything was very clean. There is food available, as well as Pepsi products for drinks. There was a pro shop that seemed very full, so I take it to mean lots of merchandise. There was even a little bar area closed for lunch, but looked very cute for evening play. read more

Charles and Sammy at the front desk are professional & friendly. I recommend going to the bowling alley on Sundays for Family Day. The only limit is that a maximum of five people are allowed per lane for two hours of bowling, which includes rented shoes, one large cheese pizza, and drinks for each person. Wasn't told you have to make a reservation. The Old man in the front with glasses was completely rude/nasty when I had asked if there's any available lanes. A kind women who walked behind him told me it was a fundraiser event tonight and wait time is available after 9pm.. I came here on a holiday weekend day with some of my family. It was pretty quiet, and I'm sure the person working here didn't necessarily want to be there. She was generally a bit slow and not particularly welcoming. Nonetheless, we got the scoop and pretty easily figured out the system, which does automatic scoring and has some "lite" animation. We easily found some balls of various sizes, though we seemed mainly to have 4 types of the same ball. (Maybe if we had scoured the alley further, we could have found more options.) I was caught between really enjoying the "retro" vibe but also feeling like the spot felt a little grimy and old. I suppose that is part of the charm. For holidays, the per-hour cost is $39. I've been to Nutmeg Bowl a few times for work (nanny). It's kind of a hole in the wall bowling alley. There's nothing outstanding or memorable about it. It's truly a classic bowling alley that you don't really see anymore. With a world full of overly expensive bowling alleys with fancy computers on the lanes where you can have food delivered to your lane, loud music, and fun lights cascading across the lanes, you can't really find older bowling alleys anymore. Nutmeg isn't crazy expensive (for an adult, two children, and shoe rentals), I paid about $45 for an hour of bowling (which was only one game for us). There's plenty of seating, bowling balls to choose from, lockers, and there's a little cafe to order quick bites. On the second floor, there's Our Back Yard Play Place which is an inflatable bounce house/arcade for the kids. You could easily spend hours here with kids. It's a cheap and fun place for the family but it is more like a hole in the wall. It's not a bad thing, it is what it is. The staff are friendly and it's cheap fun. read more

Nutmeg Bowl is a bowling alley that probably will not win the award for best looking bowling alley. On the contrary it looks like it can use a 'Bowling Alley Make Over.' Question: "Why did it not happen yet?" Answer: "Because it is bumping out here!" Every time I walk in here it is crowded, people all over the place, with their fancy bowling shoes. It seems like all bowling stations have more people than it can hold. The scene is as if there can break a fight out any moment, how ever the atmosphere tells you a different story. The bowlers have fun here and they don't mind the bad decor, the food booth, that definitely need a touch up. So if it's not broken why fix it? Nutmeg might not be the place for your 2011 World Championships, but it is the place for family, friends, and fun... but not food according to my opinion. read more

I've only been to one other bowling alley (so far), so I won't compare it to others, but this one gets the job done. There's tons of alleys, and on one side has glow-in-the-dark style (Only been here on fri nights thus far so I don't know if it's like that every night), which was really cool. Overhead music they were playing was good too. One nice feature is that the bowling system they use allows you to message other lanes (and take funny selfies), so if you have another group far away you can still contact them. There's also a small bar inside and some arcade machines which kind of appealing, I guess. Overall, it's a nice bowling alley to go to if you're in the area. As written before, it may not be the most glamorous bowling alley around but it does what it's supposed to do read more

I got a rare visit from my 69 year old mom, sister, niece, and nephew that live in Hartford, so we decided to go bowling. So with my 3 sons and I, we made 8. At least 3 of us had our own shoes. Long story short we played (1)round as a family and it ended up being $98+. Had we known about the 6pm deal that includes pizza for $50+ it would been a bit more sensible. My sons have played in the league and the women behind the desk are familiar with us but did not share this, however the girl extensively informed me how it's by the hour now, and $39/lane. There are SO many lanes here! This is one of the few bowling alleys where you get in, kick some ass, and leave. That being said, there are all these new boutique bowling alleys, and I have always been a fan of the dingy, rugged, "been a smoking establishment since 1951", kind of places. This place is amazing because one half is cosmic bowling, all day, and the other half is normal. For me, I need to be in the normal area because then I won't be able to blame my poor bowling on the lighting, which Brock knows I am bound to do! We had a birthday party for my son this weekend at Nutmeg Bowl/ My Back Yard. What a great party experience! They were highly organized, with staff to help the kids with bowling and keeping things moving. The bowling portion was lots of fun for the kids with the black lighting etc. They then smoothly transitioned is upstairs to My Backyard, where the kids had pizza and lots of time to run around the bounce structures. None of the vending machines upstairs in the bounce area work. You can't bring food, or drinks from downstairs(or so we were told). While we were downstairs the same girl who told us we couldn't bring food up from downstairs was grabbing food for a party from downstairs. The girl with glasses had her face too stuck to her phone screen to have proper etiquette. Very over priced as others have said. Fix your vending machines at the very least. Nutmeg is a classic bowling alley. It's a piece of American history. I hope this place never gets a makeover, it's perfect the way it is with a retro vibe that is cool not dated or lame like other lanes which had an expensive and sensible "refresh" in early 2000. First of all, this is a place to go to bowl, not for fancy food or high-end service. So if you're going to complain about that, save us the annoyance and go find something else to do. This is a bowling alley, the food is a convenience, not a selling point. Nutmeg Bowl isn't the prettiest of bowling alleys, and it doesn't have high-end equipment, but it's fun if there's not a whole lot to do. If you're from Fairfield, you know what I'm talking about. The lane staff is helpful and monitors unruly behavior. They are also generally quick to respond to machine errors and are friendly overall. Food staff, not so much. What do you expect? They work at a fast food counter in a noisy environment for hours at a time. Anyway, I've never had a problem with them, they're just not the friendliest people. The bar is fine- it's a dive, but if you're bowling you're not sitting in there. They offer pitchers of a couple different types of beer, but you do have to keep it on the table behind the lane seats. It's just policy. The best time to go is weekend nights when they have Moonlight or Extreme bowling. There's a DJ (she's not GREAT, but it mixes things up) and the lanes are lit up by blacklights. It's on the expensive side (I think it's around $13/pp and they require 4 people per lane) but it's fun to do every once in a while with a group. Overall, I go once a month. We took my 8 and 4 year old there on mlk day and we had a good time. We are not avid bowlers and go only when invited to birthday parties etc. They had a deal where you bowl 2 games and get the shoe rental and balls and 2 kids meals. Decent price for few hours of entertainment that the whole family could participate in. I would say though that 1 game would probably have been enough for my kids. Staff at the shoe rental counter checked us in a friendly manner. It got very busy on check out because of the holiday and I thought he staff was civil. Lane staff came out quick to clear a ball and pin from the gutters that my 4 y.o. Did. The lanes equipment, balls shoes etc all functioned properly. This was such a disappointment. Visiting in the area to see family and we decided to do a night of bowling. They're were 6 of us and it was $120 for only 1.5 hours of bowling!! That to me is unacceptable. It would've different if it was unlimited until close since we have to pay for shoe rentals, food and beer on top of that. It's robbery. And to top it off the people working the front were so rude. It was so hot on the glow in the dark bowling side and i asked if he temp could be lowered while they were on their phones and said yea i guess we'll see what we can do. I've been coming to Nutmeg Bowl since the early 80's and it always delivers. They have 60+ lanes, decent prices compared to other ones in the region, offer decent food and full bar. Great place to bowl but we simply asked for a cup of water and that request could not be accommodated. I don't like bottled water because of the leached chemicals and only asked for a cup to get water. This apparently was not allowed by management. I said I'd happily pay for the cups but they would not sell me cups. It became a ridiculous circular conversation of denials. The manager told me the store wouldn't even allow her to take a cup and she had to bring her own water. It seems ridiculous that the basic human need of water should be denied to customers that might pay to spent up to several hours in the establishment. Is this what we have come to as a society? We can't even accommodate a basic need. The amount of water I was requesting was no more than a single toilet flush. I will never enter this establishment again. Water. Really? read more

We came here today because I signed up for kidsbowlfree coupons. I had my 11 month old and 4 year old with me. It is run down and the people were nothing but rude. I wasn't able to print my coupon and instead of helping us by allowing me to print it there or even just acknowledge that I had it on my phone they turned us away. My 4 year old was devastated. Mark, behind the counter, let me stand in front of his register while he did nothing for several minutes until I finally asked if he could help me.
