Let me just say that if you are a foodie and love a diverse, delicious and extensive menu from appetizers to main dishes, to dessert, then Nutmeg Restaurant is the place to dine. Most people at first think that the Nutmeg is only a banquet facility. It's actually a restaurant and banquet facility. It's an East Windsor staple for years and one that delivers great tasty meals. The man behind the meals is Chef George. He is pure genius. George has been cheffing there for over 10 years and runs that kitchen like a tight ship. My family, friends and I have sampled many dishes for over 10 years and they all deliver. The portion sizes are excellent as well. So you will never go hungry. If you are a pasta fan, order the seafood cioppino and request that the sauce be thick. Trust me, it'll be one of your favorite dishes there. The sauce is fantastic! The prices per meal are super reasonable. The restaurant from a decor perspective is casual comfortable that has more of a small-town family appeal. The manager Paulino is fantastic! He is very knowledgable in the restaurant business and has spent his entire career in it. Paulino takes great pride in making sure all his dinner guests are completely satisfied and happy. I went for brunch this morning - called ahead yesterday to make a reservation. It was a nice place, very friendly staff. The man that I think was the manager was really nice and brought us extra mimosas (which are included with brunch, by the way with a couple of other choices). Coffee refills were frequently offered. The selection of food was great for the price. The peel-and-eat shrimp were very good - perfectly cooked. A big plate of lox called me back. I was a fan of the waffles - they were crispy even though they were part of the buffet - my table-mates and I were wondering how they did that. There was a carving/omelet station, breakfast foods, chicken, fish, pastas, pastries and muffins, the shrimp, bagels and lox, fresh fruit, salads and the big ol' cake table. A selection of cereal was available too, but really who goes to brunch to eat fruit loops?? One interesting thing was at the dessert/cake table, they had bottles of schnapps - I'm guessing you could pour it over the cake? I'm not sure - I hadn't seen that before. This review is going to be short because that is all I think that this restaurant/event venue deserves. I recently went to this venue for a family member's birthday party. It had been about 10 years since the last time I was there and walking into the space it seemed like time had not passed. As Melanie H. said - there needs to be updates to the dining room. Purple walls and heavy linen tableclothes adorned the dining area and gave it a dark and heavy look and feel. We were there on a Saturday night - they were not crowded and it did not look like anyone had to wait for a table. The menu had pretty standard fare and nothing jumped out and said "Try Me". The temperature of the private room we were in was cold and the food was extremely bland - the type of food that you dread getting at a wedding. The meal started with small dish of undercooked pasta with marinara sauce and salad with an over sweet balsamic dressing For the main course I chose the chicken and was greated with two small bland breaded chicken breasts, soggy mixed vegetables swimming in butter that consumed the whole plate and limp flavorless "roasted" potatoes. The other options - salmon in a strange sauce and roast beef looked equally unappeting. The only good thing about the evening in the end was the bread but even those were standard dinner rolls. When I go to a restaurant and they ask how I liked it - I don't want to say "The Rolls Were Great". That is not what I should remember from a restaurant. Would I go back - no. S.Y I held a 30th Birthday party here and it was absolutely phenomenal! From the planning to the execution. I worked closely with Barbara and Brian who made sure to make my event as perfect as I had pictured. They were always available to not only answer questions in regards to booking, viewing the event space, room layouts & decor suggestions, and food selection. Although a lot of the decor was brought in by a 3rd party communication throughout was divine. Looking for an event space after Covid that had great food and service was and important to me so for holding my very 1st party here they did not disappoint. Service was immaculate and the food was spectacular. (Salmon was the favorite of the evening.) I was happy I got to experience some of the new renovations. There a 3 event rooms and each had its own feel to it. I was originally booked in the HOUSE room which is very modern and intimate. I was then switched to the library which was also newly renovated but this had more a vintage feel with the fireplace and bookcase. There were a few areas in the facility that could use a little updating (entrance & bathroom...) but that's nothing in regards to this facility earning a 5 star. Back in 1999 my husband and I got married here and had a reception there and years later people are still talking about how delicious the food was. I'm so disappointed to read the reviews now because obviously it's gone downhill from when were when we were there. At our wedding one of the food choices was the chicken Francese which I had again years later and it was still delicious. Also for you that don't know it, part of this restaurant is supposedly haunted and was featured on a tv show. I hope they get back on track. The fact are now serving things like a soft pretzel is incredibly disappointing. For those of you who are under 30, old-school means classic food made well and with care. Spectacular job by The Nutmeg Restaurant and Banquet Hall. In June we held our wedding ceremony and reception all in that one beautiful place. The staff was so friendly and accommodating and catered to our every need. The gazebo courtyard and the banquet room were beautifully decorated for our special day. We came for brunch today and we were very disappointed. The food was old and tasted of poor quality. Most of it didn't have any flavor it was really bland and the roast beef was so over cooked to the point it was inedible. We were visiting with family and absolutely adored the quiet ambience for our large multi-generational luncheon party. Everyone loved their food, the menu has a great variety of dishes. The Salmon Citrus Salad was delightful, 2 varieties of raviolis were delicious, the seafood, steak, soup and hot salmon dish were also raved about. And, to top it off, desserts to swoon for. We went on Easter Sunday for their Easter Brunch. I have never had such a horrible buffet as this one. We had a 1pm reservation and upon arriving we were seated in a lovely dining room with white linen tablecloths and pastel linen napkins. We were asked if we would like a complimentary Mimosa or Bloody Mary. We chose Mimosa then we went to get our salad for which they had 4...pasta ravioli salad with dry hard raviolis. The potato salad looked dry and not touched. We chose a tossed salad. Then proceeded to the other side where the meat was. NO CARVING stations there was greasy half cooked bacon, sausages, and dry eggs benedict, 6 very thin ham slices in juice curled up, and beef slices the same. Dessert table was this large bowl of chocolate cake pieces folded into cream, soft pieces of cherry pie, bagels. It was an awful way to celebrate Easter. We ate the salad, and waved down a waiter to bring the Mimosa. I did get a cup of Lipton tea, and my husband a coffee. The cost of this was $60.00 per person and $24.00 tip they added on and of course tax = $152.00. A tip that was added on for someone bringing us a Mimosa, tea and a coffee. The whole experience was unbelievable. We could have gotten a better dinner at the Golden Corral. If ever you are thinking on going on a holiday think twice! Years ago this was a hopping place with a good chef, probably the same mentioned by Amy G in her previous review, and I hadn't been to it in years. I seem to recall brunch was especially good and I had hoped it hadn't changed over the years so I was excited to try it again. My Fiance and I were treated to dinner at the Nutmeg for my parents 60th wedding anniversary, there were about 11 of us and I must say, everyone at the table was happy with their meals. The owner (or he appeared to be the owner) was out and about in the dining room making sure everyone was taken care of and things were running smoothly...usually this job best left to a hostess but it was still very nice to see an attentive owner. The menu is definitely Continental old school, baked stuffed shrimp, baked scrod with a ritz cracker crumb topping and twin thick cut pork chops (which my Fiance had and is still raving about). I didn't look at the entire menu but I would imagine they might have a Captain's wine list and serve things like I did when I worked at the Windsor House years ago...things like Chateaubriand for two, frogs legs and the old classics. The dining room is also very old school formal complete with a Courvoisier display case which was great 20 years ago when people got dressed up to go out to dinner at a fine restaurant but unfortunately nobody does that anymore so if your looking to impress, this would be a great choice otherwise it doesn't appear to have a shirt and tie dress code either. I'm puzzled by some of the negative reviews here because negative has not been my experience at this hidden gem. Jeff E.'s review from 6/6/2015 pretty much sums up the place perfectly, to the point where I considered just cribbing from his review. We first came to Nutmeg, which we had not heard of previously, because we had a coupon for twin lobster dinners for $22.95, which you cannot find for that price ANYWHERE in CT. Once we got to the place we were frankly surprised and very impressed by the quality of the food and the service. I mean, boiled lobster is boiled lobster, kind of hard to screw that up, but my partner has ordered dishes as varied as salmon, grilled swordfish, pasta, lobster bisque, and it's all been pretty stellar. We shared an order of salmon cake appetizer topped with greens on our first visit which was delish. Portions are sizeable. I also don't understand people in some of the other reviews cadging about the prices, because even without comparing the prices to West Hartford or Glastonbury, they seem eminently reasonable to me. Tonight we had dinner for two (the aforementioned twin lobsters plus lobster ravioli, the amazing crusty rolls with very generous dish of olive oil and herbs for dipping, lobster bisque plus the soup of the day (minestra soup--yum-my!), two glasses of champagne, and a huge serving of tiramisu plus coffee for $87.00 pre-tip. The place is kind of old-school classic restaurant which we like--linen tablecloths, decor is kind of Tuscany Italian with colors of purple, ochre,and green. It's NOT a spendy-trendy type of place, as one reviewer has pointed out. I suspect maybe they make most of their money from weddings and banquets based on the way the place is set up, so when we first walked in we were like "hmmm." You kind of have to find the restaurant part down a long hall that passes by all the banquet areas and the little gazebo where they must hold the weddings. But the service is great; admittedly the place never seems super crowded but then we've only been there on Wednesday nights which I think is seafood night. The menu includes a daily pre-fixe menu as well as a daily specials menu, and there is always tons to choose from. Very decent wine list. The layout of the place is a little unusual; our waitperson told us that the restaurant has been there for 60 years! beginning with a little patio outside the owners' residence that served breakfast and dinner. Gradually over the years the place got built up around the original residence; in fact the front of the original house is the rear wall of the dining room. Local chef-hero Billy Grant was a chef here at one time before he went on to start the spendy-trendy Grants and Briccos in Glastonbury and West Hartford, and for many years, before there were all those options in West and Simsbury and Glastonbury, the Nutmeg was the place to go for fine dining. To me it's a very unique place, great food, great service and great value. I am very biased, because we got married at the Nutmeg and had our reception there. It was easy, tasteful, and perfect for us. Rose Marie was our wedding coordinator from the Nutmeg, and she was just the kind of person I needed for the reception planning. As a result, we go there to eat at least once per year. It is a nice place to eat. It's a little pricey, so it's a special occasion place for us. We purchased a restaurants.com $25 gift card thing there, but we haven't gone back to use it yet. What I like is that the owner (kind of) remembers us. He's seen our faces around a couple times, but he didn't work the wedding. This place is kind of new, and it seems it's the first and only Chinese hot pot restaurant in CT...I f you like hot pot, then it is a good choice. Although it's somehow different from those in Sichuan of China, one can't expect better in CT. The owner also runs another Sichuan restaurant near the A Dong supermarket. All the staff is Chinese but the waitresses can speak English well. But I'll spend a couple of days in NYC for better Chinese food. read more

I really wish I could have given this place full stars. Had our wedding here tonight and the food was excellent, the venue is small but works, the inside is pretty, the courtyard is basic but works. The staff was good. Everything was going great - until mid my wedding night the owner/coordinator decided to pull myself and the groom aside to ask about charging for the the '5-6 extra guests' that came beyond what we gave them as the total. I get it, I really do. Small business and weddings are on headcount. But did you really have to make any extra food for the guests? Nope. Especially considering we ALSO had our rehearsal dinner the night before there which was not on the cheap side.... Was it really the time or the place in the middle of our wedding reception to pull us aside and ask us for more money for the more guests you 'counted?' Tacky. But otherwise, yes it was great. I used to come to Nutmeg's all the time for bridal/baby showers and dinner about 15-20 years ago. The food was always wonderful. I went there today, the first time for brunch. This is truly a hidden gem in CT. I've been here a few times and always left happy! The owners treat you very well and always make sure you have refreshments. The food is absolutely delicious! It tastes very fresh and there are many options from freshly cut meat to mac and cheese and baked goods. Perfect for a brunch for two or even larger size parties for special celebrations! We've been to the Nutmeg several times & can't wait to go back because of the great menu, personalized service, great atmosphere & big band music & dancing. The food is good, well prepared & well presented & generous portions. Despite being crowded, the service is prompt & courteous because the Nutmeg has a large staff of very attentive servers. We've seen many people there celebrating special occasions. There's a loyal crowd of regulars who love to dance. It's wonderful for a couple's night out! We went for Thanksgiving Dinner and not only was the food incredible but the service was wonderful. Huge portions to the point where we had plenty to take home for another meal and they gave us dessert to go as well because we were too full to have it after dinner. Nowadays, many restaurants don't offer that type of service. And to Karen F... I'm sorry you had a negative experience however, the menu clearly stated it was "Roast Leg of Lamb" and not the "Roast Rack of Lamb" you thought it was. I have been dining here for years at least once a month.we were there last night and it was the worst experience I have ever had there,I ordered a pork chop special they had and it looked like slop on a plate.there was a pool of butter under the spinach and the sauce was just dumped on the plate.
