I always know my puggle baby Stella is in good hands at the Oakhurst Animal Hospital. We've been bringing her here for almost a year now and they've been great. The office itself is super clean. The woman working the front desk (Christine I believe?) is personable and always helpful. It's nice that we never have to wait long to be seen by the doctor. I usually just have to give her a quick run down of why we're in, they get Stella on the scale, and then we're directed to a room where we're greeted by the doctor. Dr. Stephens is a pro! He's extremely knowledgeable in everything dog-related. I appreciate that he not only diagnoses, but explains things. It's nice to know what each vaccine is for, how often my pup needs them, etc. He truly cares about his patients and their owners. This last time I was in with Stella she had a lot to get done: annual exam, rabies shot, bordatella, blood work, urine and fecal sample testing - the works. Dr. Stephens gave me options on the vaccines, explained her test results, and even informed me about the different antibiotic options which ended up saving me money! Dr. Stephens and his assistant, Christine, are as good as it gets. The office is clean, professional, and calm. Christine can be all business at times but she has a big heart and I think her no-nonsense attitude keeps her from falling in love with every pet that comes through the door. I had a very nervous Border Collie from rescue who was always on edge at the vet and the fact this is a private practice makes it a very serene place to go. The waiting room isn't full of nervous pets and owners and they run things like clockwork. Dr. Stephens always put my nervous dog at ease which is saying a lot because she was usually more afraid of men than women. My sweet girl became very sick very quickly over the summer and he handled me and her calmly, without instilling any panic or fear (as other medical professionals have done.) He was realistic and would check in to see how she was doing and made sure she had all her proper medications before he was going out of town for vacation and made sure I knew the emergency alternatives if the worse happened while he was gone. My sweet 14 year old baby crossed over the rainbow bridge due to an inoperable brain tumor this summer and I couldn't have asked for a better person to be my baby's last professional caretaker. Dr. Stephens was calm and caring and his assistant seemed as broken up as we were, in the kindest and caring of ways. When we are ready for another dog I won't hesitate bringing him/her back to Oakhurst Animal Hospital. read more

Love it! I highly recommend Dr. Stephens. I took my two cats here recently and had a wonderful experience. I was looking for a new veterinarian because I'd had one I really liked but was too far (one of my cats cries the second I put her in her cage, and continues to do so until we get home). I tried another Vet on Eola but had a terrible experience. Their waiting room is tiny, they speed animals through like a factory and one of my cats took a real dislike to the Vet from the second she touched him...he's never been unfriendly. He even tried to bite her and he has never tried to bite anyone. So...I had to go Vet shopping again. I turned to Yelp and the Oakhurst Animal Hospital is close to my home and got really good reviews. The office is spacious and spread out enough for several animals, but the receptionist told me they purposely tried to stagger them, especially cats and dogs to minimize the stress on the animals. We got an appointment quickly and the staff was very friendly. When we arrived, we got right in with no waiting. Dr. Stephens has a nice gentle manner and natural affinity for animals. More importantly...my cats both took to him quickly. They let him handle them for their check ups with no fuss. We got the mandatory shots, and he didn't try to sell us on a lot of blood tests or other things like some Vets do. I can't say enough how grateful I am to Dr. Stephens and his entire staff. My 1 1/2 year old dog Rosie had been extremely itchy. I tried everything over the counter etc but she was just miserable. I called and the staff got me in pretty quickly. Dr. Stephens greeted Rosie and spoke to her as he always does and was extremely gentle as always. Rosie has no fear of going to the vet at all. As far as she is concerned, Dr. Stephens is just another nice human there to pet her and praise her! Dr. Stephens gave her a shot which she didn't even react to and gave her a prescription for two months. Rosie slept GREAT that night and hasn't itched, licked her feet/legs or rubbed her eyes since the appointment three days ago. Her skin no longer has any redness either. The best part? The bill. I recently had open heart surgery and have a lot of medical bills so I was concerned how much this would cost. All of this was just over $100. My other previous vet would have been at least $300. Today was my first visit and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Stephens took to my dog immediately. One of the reasons I switched vets is because the previous vet was afraid of my dog...? Seems weird right. My dog does come off slightly aggressive but she is a rescue and a bully. He knew how to handle her perfectly with absolutely no problems. Loud bark but I'm sure being a veterinarian they would come across that frequently. I was looking for more of a Family Practice atmosphere as opposed to the whole medical group scenario and I feel that is exactly what I got. I couldn't ask for a better vet to take my dog to. The office is always clean, the staff is very friendly and accommodating and they never make you wait. The waiting room is never packed with other people waiting to see the vet, I've always been able to go right into the exam room. We are the owners of a now 6 month old Maltese. We purchased her from a breeder that required us to use their vet for the first few months. As our required time with them is coming to an end, My wife and I brought our 5 month Maltese to meet the staff and especially the veterinarian as we were looking for a vet that is closer to our home. Reading the reviews, we were hoping that the vet would be a good fit, especially after reading the prior reviews. We made our appointment and the day came for our maltese's wellness check. Our first impression of the facility was positive, clean. The receptionist was all business. Medical records. We were eager to meet the doctor. Unfortunately we felt the veterinarian did not want to have interaction with our maltese after meeting her for the first time. We found him to be cold, dry and especially monotone. Nothing to show that the veterinarian has a passion and love for animals. No warmth, in welcoming new clients. When asking questions, we felt that we were more of a bother or perhaps asking to many questions. In his exam, we were told that our maltese has a cateract in one of her eyes. This immediately put us in panic mode as words of possible blindness were mentioned. Needless to say we took our maltese to an animal eye specialist which told us that she does not have a cateract. In the end, we were hoping that this vet hospital was the one that I along with four other members of our extended family who have new puppies would switch to. Please know that this is our impression of this clinic and we respect that others may feel different. Yet we feel that this review is warranted. read more

I looooove my vet! I have 2 cats and really love animals. I tried a local vet here in Batavia and was not happy with the service or the cleanliness. My sister recommended Dr. Stephens in Aurora as she has been taking her dog to him for years. Dr. Stephens is simply the best! He has a great demeanor with people and animals. We've been very pleased with Dr. Stephens and have been going to him since moving to Chicago 5+ years ago. I agree with other reviewers who noted his patience and willingness to explain clearly what our options are. We have two cats and a new puppy. Dr Stephens also saw our to previous dogs, who were rescue dogs with some health issues. I was so lucky to have found Dr Stephens after a bad experience with another local vet. I have brought my small menagerie of dogs and cats to him for years now and trust him implicitly. He never tries to upsell services or unnecessary treatments. He offers a range of options, if possible, for your pet's condition, and states what he believes would be the best medical course. He is always conservative in care and respectful of his human clients' dollars, while looking out for the pets' best interests. Christine up front is awesome, and just as compassionate and helpful. I had one cat who had what was clearly going to be a recurrent painful and expensive condition; the best option for all of us was to let him go. Dr Stephens was compassionate but frank in saying kitty would suffer. Another cat had multiple problems, and Dr Stephens warned me of one thing that would be horrible to see but would mean it was time. When it happened at home, it was so much easier knowing that this was something I had been warned about. In neither of the cats' passings was I rushed. I was allowed to stay with them after, and it was done only when I was ready to start. These happened 6 months apart. He even gave me a discount the second time just because that sucked. My dogs are patients as well, nothing as dramatic. Thank goodness! Ear infection, repeat. His prices on prescription foods are not jacked up, and prescription drugs are also well priced. I have to say, I am a very tough critic because I am in the medical field. But I cannot find a thing to pick on here. Clean, well-run, easy to get appointments, top-notch personnel. They care, it shows, and they don't try to pull extra dollars out of you just for the hell of it like some chain clinics located inside unnamed pet stores. read more
