Went here to buy supplies to fasten a rack on my bike. Wandered around for 2 mins, lost as a newborn pup, and Reuben at the front desk asked if I needed any help. Told him what I was trying to do and he took me to two metal clamping options to fasten the rack on the bike and even went out to the front to see how they would worked. He gave me tools and cut rubber lining to secure the clamps on the bike and we did it all right in the front of the shop. HUGE help! Thank you again Reuben! The man who helped me was incredibly knowledgeable and kind. He asked the right questions, quickly understood the situation, and guided me to exactly what I needed. This place is the best. Why go to Home Depot when you can go to a locally owned business that has been in ocean beach for a long time. They even have a piano in there now and they have locals come in and play and practice and seeing so the ambience is incredible. I'm a local and shopped here intentionally instead of going to big box stores like Home Depot. Last week I bought two small jars of stain and didn't get a receipt. Three days later they were able to look up the transaction but because I didn't have a piece of paper they would only give me a store credit. This is 2026 and they should have the ability to process a refund without a physical piece of paper when the customer (especially a local) proves the purchase. I won't ever shop here again. I drove down to Ocean Beach polish up a friend's brick on the commemorative wall. I thought I brought everything with me but I was wrong. Fortunately O.B. Hardware had things in stock that I had never seen at other hardware stores before. Different types of polish for both porous and non-porous Rock surfaces.. it's not so much about what the store had in stock it's that the owner knew exactly what my project was and took me to precisely the items that were going to work. Came here on short notice needing fuel for my torch for creme brûlée lol. I was setting up for an event in Point Loma and mine ran out in the middle of torching. I was looking for a specific battery for my car key fob this morning that was out of stock at CVS, Rite Aid, and back ordered from Autozone. I called OB hardware and Ryan answered, located the battery, and ensured they had it in stock. I arrived a couple minutes later and he offered to replace it for me there, which was incredibly helpful since apparently my vehicle owners manual actually told me the wrong battery. I went to *cough a bigger chain hardware store looking for chalk paint, but they only had one color. I called OB Hardware to inquire if they had any and the nice gentleman on the phone went and read off ALL the colors they had as options, and there were 4x as many colors. My big fascination is spray paint & magnets (NOT what you're thinking...I've yet to commit a felony!). They carry both in copious quantities. They also have the little bits of everything that you need at a moment's notice (hooks, screws, miscellaneous other hardware bits & pieces) as well as a fair selection of gardening supplies and even cut glass & plexi-glass (again...NOT what you're thinking!) I'm trying! I really am!! I try to shop here as much as I can. My husband goes in a lot, this his is my review only. 1. I wish they were opened later, at least till 7 or 8 pm!! I work nights and school during the day. I am unable to shop there :( 2. My husband went in looking for screen to cover our back door (OB flies) and someone showed him the "magic screen" as seen on tv. easy to put up, no nails ect. Perfect! It was 4 dollars more than CVS but that's okay, we want to shop local. The problem was I told my neighbor where to get one, she went a few days ago and was told "I've worked here 12 years, never seen it, we don't have it, never had it" Clearly, the small staff was wrong. Some guy with long hair in a pony tail I think. 3. I'm a pack rat. I found the box, with the white, 2 line of numbers EIS lettering "OB Hdwe" on it. :( 4. This is not the first time this has happened to me when I've referred people. I live next to an Air BB, have sent people down there, on;y to be told, they closed early. Had to share. On Thanksgiving day, right in the middle of the rain deluge and just moments before our guests were to arrive, we discovered a fair amount of water dripping in to our guest bathroom from a roof leak. On a whim, we called OB Hardware... and the owner answered! When he heard our plight, he left his own Thanksgiving dinner and met my husband at the shop to hook him up with some wet patch. As a local in OB, I wish I can support local business. Quite a few problems with this place. The hours are not friendly, they are only open until 4 or 4:30 or 5 maybe. I called them and they said they were open until 5. I got there at 4:45 and the doors were closed. They are also closed Sundays which also is annoying. They are still stuck in the past with the $5 minimum on credit card. I would not care so much about that but since they cant keep straight hours that just adds to the annoyance. This is one of those special businesses that make Ocean Beach awesome. Yesterday I picked up a sweet old surfboard that was missing the metal hardware for one of it's obsolete "lockbox" fin boxes. I took one of the originals in to OB hardware to see about improvising a functional match. The cashier on duty hopped over to the grinder and machined me one out of a washer on the spot.
