Oberweis is unfortunately not making it to my top ice cream stores. I like the random mainstay and special flavors that they provide, but the flavors were lacking. I tried the apple pie ice cream and it tasted good, but I went with the lemon blackberry and discovered that the lemon part didn't really taste lemony. (I have since verified the ingredients on their website, so at least they are open about those.) They were out of the premade pints in the freezer for lemon blackberry; they willingly hand-packed a pint for me but they refused to put two flavors in!!! I have _never_ been to an ice cream place that wouldn't put two flavors in a hand-packed pint. My local favorite will do three. I've had places do four or more. One star deduction for refusing to mix my pint. That's not the best service. One star deduction for only OK taste. Interesting place, maybe a bit too large - feels like a candy store instead of an ice cream shoppe - and not somewhere I would revisit, unfortunately. read more

Let me describe my recent visit to Oberweis. I went to the counter to order over blaring music and 2 employees arguing with each other at the counter. I ordered a large chocolate fudge sundae on peanut butter ice cream and a banana split to go. I was surprised that this set me back $23 dollars but I was aware of the exorbitant prices listed on the menu. When i got home, About a mile from the store, My sundae was on chocolate ice cream and the banana split was like a soupy mess with so little topping I could barely discern what it was supposed to be. There was less ice cream in this $10 item than in a regular cone. Never again! read more

Disclaimer: My three stars for Oberweis is legit not based on Conegate, but simply because of the flavor and texture which I find to be good, but average. And because I only ever go through the drive-thru I don't have much to say other than the ice cream is good, the service is not the fastest but okay, and the price is on the higher end for ice cream. What I came here to talk (write) about is ice cream cones, which are both necessary and instrumental in the true enjoyment of ice cream. In this essay, I will discuss the importance of specifying that you carry both sugar cones and waffle cones. When ordering off a menu, one can assume all available options are listed. Furthermore, often one may shorten a name of an item when there are no others with similar names listed (i.e. calling "Three Cheese Mac n Cheese" simply "Mac n Cheese"). At Oberweis an ordering conundrum has been created by these two widely accepted practices. Oberweis' menu boasts about their waffle cones that come in plain, sprinkles, and nuts as well as waffle bowls that come in the same varieties. Because of previously stated practices, one may choose to order a "nut cone/cone with nuts" or a "sprinkles bowl/bowl with sprinkles" and would get their desired item, but if one was to order a "plain cone", at this establishment they would not receive a waffle cone sans sprinkles or nuts, but would receive something that isn't even listed on the menu... a sugar cone (the world's least favorite of cones because of its cardboard like texture and taste). There is a simple solution to this huge injustice and that's to include "sugar cones" or "plain sugar cones" as an option on the menu. This would avoid any disappointment on the customers part when receiving their cone and sending it back, as well as having to re-ring the customer up because they do charge customer's for a new cone when they specify a sugar cone isn't what they wanted. This must be addressed. We cannot continue to live in a world that doesn't acknowledge the difference in the two cones as if both should be referred to as the same name, as if one doesn't deserve the primary title, as if the other really even deserves to be available (I mean, it's not even on the menu). I also love their whole milk, one of the few milks I can actually drink that doesn't have to be mixed with something or made into hot cocoa; I can just drink the milk. This last quart of mango pomegranate had big globs of the pomegranate rather than a more even spread. Not a huge problem except when you go for that perfect scoop. It will not stop me from going here for my ice cream fix. More of a suggestion to improve manufacturing I guess. Anyway the people at every establishment I've visited were always nice. I love Overweise. I always have. I remember many a winter when, as a child, Dairy Queen would turn me away due to the fact that temperatures were well below freezing. They couldn't deal with the fact that a small, 110 pound boy would possibly want a large chocolate milk shake in the dead of winter. Oberweise is open year round, which is awesome, because my craving for ice cream doesn't become any less real during the winter months. I mean, imagine if Starbucks stopped serving hot coffee in July. What's that all about? That being said, the prices here are a bit steep. It ain't cheap to keep that heat on all year round while you're also keeping a bunch of ice cream frozen! Keep your heater and fan on at the same time for 4 months if you don't believe me. For 3 people, one regular sized shake, one regular sized frost bite (their version of a blizzard, or McFlurry, apparently), and two scoops in a waffle bowl, the total was $17. Which is about what I expect to pay at a place like this, or Coldstone, so I wasn't surprised, but it is still something to be aware of. I docked a star because during my last visit, my shake was less than satisfying. I ordered a peanut butter and chocolate shake, which is a pretty basic request, I assumed, since I've had it here before and it was delicious. The girl seemed confused, but after consulting with a co-worker, she whipped it right up. The only problem? The peanut butter sat at the bottom of the cup in a huge clump that would regularly become lodged in my straw, making it impossible to get any of the actual shake into my face without using a spoon. I basically had to go home and remix it myself. Which is less than satisfying when I am already paying $6+ for a shake. I expect better. That being said, my typical experience here is usually much more positive. Their employees are always courteous, fast, and attentive, and the drive through is a great option in these less than ideal conditions. What a terrible experience. I've been going to your stores longer than that rude cashier been alive and to be treated this poorly. After repeating my order at the speaker for the third time and the cashier getting it wrong, I drove to the window to give the order in person. Was ignored for over 5 minutes and only when the line of cars behind pilled up the cashier opens the window to tell me I have to drive back in line and reorder. I asked if I can give her my order in person then go back to the end of the line since the speaker wasn't working, the response was "sorry, there is nothing I can do to help you". I repeated my request citing the poor quality of the speaker. But again, " sorry there is nothing I can do to help you". That statement says it all about Oberweis attitude to its customers.
