My husband and I came to Obon late one Sunday evening while on a work trip to Scottsdale. The restaurant was within walking distance of our hotel and we were feeling a little under the weather, so decided we wanted some ramen to help soothe that feeling. We popped into the restaurant and didn't have a reservation. There were a few tables that were full, but it was definitely more empty at that time than packed. The hostess was not necessarily the nicest person and more focused on her phone. She greeted us, but went back to texting. We stood there for a minute and the restaurant phone rang, which she answered. After standing there for 5-7 minutes, she came back and seated us. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As we approached the table, we noticed that it still had plates and bowls leftover from the previous customer. The busser quickly removed them and wiped the table down for us to take a seat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The server came over relatively quickly and was super nice and knowledgeable about the menu. Since it was two of us, we wanted to try a range of things but our main focus was ramen. We decided to order some edamame to start, which was okay. It wasn't super fresh, but overall it was decent. For our main course, we ordered the kaizen and the hafu sushi. We ordered the Obon ramen to split. Not long after ordering our food came out. The server was really attentive and placed our ramen in two separate bowls for us. As far as flavor goes, the Obon was extremely spicy. I'm a spicy girlie and I couldn't even eat it. I ate the noodles, but the broth was too much for me. I passed it on to my husband and to my surprise, he actually ate it (he doesn't like spice). I think his sore throat trumped the spice. The kaizen roll was really good. We actually loved that. The hafu, not so much. The cilantro flavor was a little too heavy on the roll itself. It lists the soup base as spicy red miso. I didn't think it was spicy but I didn't need to add anything to adjust it. It was a little salty, but not to the point where it was making me thirsty. 8/10. We also ordered salmon teriyaki. It was a "large plate". Portion size was good. Nice teriyaki flavor, not too sweet, and salmon was cooked nicely. 8/10 We also ordered tonkotsu ramen. The mild broth is rich and not too salty. I think this is run by the owner of Bisutoro, and I didn't order the same things as I did there. What a disaster that was. The amount of the batter on the veggies was way too much. The dipping sauce was subpar. the veggies, there wasn't much variety. Every other piece I picked up was either broccoli or pieces of green beans that were cut shorter. After eating here, my stomach disagreed with me, terribly. I was sick and I hadn't even left the restaurant yet. I was nauseous and felt disgusting. I rushed home with the runs, hardly had the chance to park the car and I was off running to the restroom. I have a feeling it was because of the food here. Otherwise anything else that I'd eaten earlier was more than fine. Nothing made me felt nauseous or like I had a violent stomach bug. My boyfriend and I walked in on a Thursday night before we had a reservation at Puttshack, and it seemed relatively busy and got a table within 20 minutes of putting our name down and walking around the block. The one thing I definitely did not like about this place (maybe I'm becoming my grandparents) was that the place was incredibly dark for me except for the bright lighting that came from the kitchen. It was a little bit hard for my eyes to kind of read the menu but figured out how to resolve my own issue. We ended up ordering a few items which were the wagyu egg rolls, the crispy rice trio, the hamachi kama, and o-toro sashimi. The only things we really enjoyed were the crispy rice bites and the o-toro sashimi. The wagyu egg rolls were quite bland to both of us and definitely isn't something we'd ever return for. The main dish that had actually brought me to this restaurant was their hamachi kama as I had seen that it comes with a side of finadenne sauce which is traditionally a spicy soy/vinegar blended sauce that one could find on Guam or any Chamorro restaurant. It's something that intrigued me to find on a menu here in Arizona so I forced my boyfriend to accompany me here for this. The kama here was probably the worst I've ever had. It was disgustingly sweet by itself which is something I've never experienced having any restaurant put a sugary marinade on this dish so that took us both by surprise. Now when it came to their finadenne, I was even more disappointed as it had no distinctive or familiar flavors as you would find with the traditional recipe. Even though many families may have their own take on the sauce itself as that happens with other cultures and recipes, this was just plain wrong and nothing like what it's supposed to taste like which upset me a little. The other thing that wasn't their fault at all but I think should be brought to light because the person that did this should be ashamed of what they did was that when I went to the bathroom, there was a literal pebble of poop on the wall where the toilet paper dispenser was. After avoiding getting anywhere near the feces, I immediately notified a woman who was coming in with her child to the only stall and also told the hostess. We were amazed how quickly word had spread to all the workers what was found in the bathroom because we saw everyone going to take a peak before a brave waiter went in with sanitary gear to take care of the issue. The roll and soup were from the happy hour menu (half off) so they were priced reasonable. However, I would not order them at regular price. The boa bun was good but small.
