I really hate leaving bad reviews for restaurants. I am giving it two stars because the atmosphere is very nice, comfortable. The service was fine. However the food / quality for the cost is bad. My hope in writing this review is genuinely that the restaurant can improve. This place has lots of potential. The fish- did not taste fresh. The flavors were not balanced and honestly some of what we ate had no flavor? There was 4 of us and none of us enjoyed the rolls, sashimi, or any of the food besides the edamame. Mind you, when you pay $25 a roll you expect that roll to be pretty great and at least quality. It wasn't :/ The drinks were ok.. first round tasted like there was 2 ounces of lime concentrate in the margs. Wouldn't recommend to eat... but maybe go for an easy cocktail and atmosphere? I hope they can improve the food taste / quality. I probably still wouldn't even eat here even if it were cheaper. read more

Many friend here for dinner on my first visit. This place is new, but clearly has a big following already as the place was pretty full. Thankfully we got in with that a reservation, but it looked like we may have gotten the last table on a Wednesday evening. I really like this place is decor even from the outside. There is a colorful mural outside and a carved wooden door. Inside the main color is aqua with some Asian statues and basket style lighting. It's quite a lovely interior. From the hostess to their server, the service here was really great. Very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food here is Asian, and both a cocktail menu and the food menu are quite large. We got here during happy hour. We both skipped cocktails, but ordered the gyoza off the happy hour menu. For dinner, I ordered the SoLag Drunken Noodles, and my friend ordered the Thai Crab Fried Rice. Everything was delicious! Our server noticed a gift bag we had and asked if we had a birthday. Tonight, we celebrate a delayed Father's Day with my dad and his wife at the new Starfish restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona. Starfish is modern, sleek, beautiful interior and dimly lit for ambiance. The house noise level is high and patrons are engaging with each other. Conversations across the table are a challenge. We were seated and introduced to our waiter, Dillon. I love good service and appreciate those who provide it well. That was not the case tonight as our waiter was overbearing, interrupted many conversations when nothing was required and made "service" about him. When ordering all of our entrees, we were told each time "amazing choice" like we were on a game show trying to win a prize. He also squatted well below our tabletop to take our order and peeked up over the table like a toddler. It was uncomfortable and very odd. His engagement at other tables was more invasive then I have ever experienced, too. Our order started with the shrimp tempora in a sushi roll that was ok. The OG Vietnamese roll with braised pork, cilantro, shiso, pickle onions, cucumbers, chives and mushrooms wrapped in rice paper served with a OG red sauce was the star of the night. It was savory, delicious and innovative. The pad Thai was bland and dry, a hard pass. The chili fire dumplings with shrimp and chicken was undercooked and doughy. Our final selection was the candy dragon prawns in a wok fired honey citrus sauce, candied walnuts and dragon fruit. The shrimp was overcooked, chewy and required a knife to cut. This was not a strong showing by the kitchen. Although, the food was warm, we were suspicious as our entrees were delivered within four minutes of ordering. The final check took fifteen minutes after we flagged our waiter down with our CC. I really looked forward to a nice evening with good food at a new Scottsdale haunt. Tonight that did not happen at Starfish! The waiter and food quality leaves me never entering Starfish again. If the ship direction is not corrected sooner, their longevity is a real parel. When a friend suggested Starfish for our monthly girls dinner, it was a unanimous "yes" from all! We were excited to try something new, the location was convenient, and the reviews at the time sounded promising. We made a reservation for 6pm on a Tuesday evening and even though the majority of our party was there right on time, we had to wait a good 20+ minutes to get seated. The manager did comp our appetizers as a result of the wait, which was a nice gesture, but I could already tell that our server wasn't super pleased to be assigned to our table based on her attitude. We started with a mint thai chicken roll, edamame, and eggplant as our appetizers. They were all just okay in my opinion. The mint thai chicken roll was a bit watery as if it had been prepared ahead of time and sat in the refrigerator, the edamame and eggplant were both super saucy. Needless to say, we didn't even eat them all. For entrees, I shared the black cod and a sunshine roll with one of my friends, and others at the table ordered the halibut, the steak, a noodle dish and some sides of both plain white and coconut rice. A couple of women in the group also had drinks (the lychee martini and a glass of wine). I did enjoy the black cod and the coconut rice and the folks that had the steak and the halibut enjoyed those as well but nothing was incredible. The service was great and the staff was genuinely friendly. Our waiter gave us amazing tips and suggestions, and he was spot on. The drinks were excellent .I had the margarita and loved it. Amazing atmosphere, valet parking, quick service. I have been to the Laguna beach location and now I prefer the Scottsdale location. By far one of the best bars I've been to in a while. Fresh hand made Tortillas came with the halibut. Kinda weird but I loved it. Thank god for those tortillas. The butterfly pea martini I posted is very good, and you can't taste the alcohol but all their drinks have a LOT of alcohol. So watch out. The imperial garden was strong but balanced. Piña tini is INSANE!!!!!! Top tier. I loved the espresso marini, it looks like it has a bunch of stuff in it, but don't be afraid, it tastes how it's supposed to taste, they don't do kettle one draft espresso martini like everyone else. I love Starfish. I don't reccomend getting sushi (Yasuo in the same complex is way better) but I do reccomend getting anything else on the menu. Any of their apps, beef dishes, noodles, fried rice, the seafood...it's all incredible. I love the vibe of the restaurant and the service has always been consistently good. Their cocktail menu is also super fun with lots of unique drinks and their happy hour being on the weekends is incredible. SENTRY - WATCHING RESTAURANTS Starfish Scottsdale 8390 E Via de Ventura Scottsdale 85258 This is a relatively new restaurant here, and is part of a chain in California. I and 2 companions came for dinner during Restaurant Week. We arrived at 5 and were seated immediately. The noise level was so high that we found ourselves shouting at each other and had to ask the server to repeat himself over and over again. We started out with virgin cocktails - Companion #1 a cranberry margarita, Companion #2 a butterfly samba, and for myself, a strawberry margarita. Companion #2 found the butterfly samba devoid of flavor and sent it back in exchange for a diet coke. Because we were a party of 3 our server would only allow 2 of us to order off the Restaurant Week menu. Our third person was required to order a la carte. Our third person ordered steamed pork dumplings, crab california roll, and a shrimp tempura roll. This companion noted that the rice in the rolls was not properly cooked and left a number of servings of the rolls on the plate uneaten. Companion #2 had pan fried pork dumplings, and steak fried rice. The dumplings were cooked properly but had little flavor and the steak fried rice had 2 thin slivers of over cooked steak and was totally without flavor. For myself, I had drunken noodles and bahn mi sliders. The noodles had a strange flavor that was off putting and the bahn mi was well made and had good taste. I ordered a second virgin strawberry margarita, which tasted totally different than the first one I had. For dessert, Companion #3 ordered the chocolate chip bread pudding. Because a fork could not be inserted into the pudding it was left mostly untouched. Companion #2 had a ball of vanilla ice cream, and I ordered green tea gelato that was much more like poorly made ice cream than an true gelato. Our waiter somehow made a "mistake" on the bill and originally asked for $218.00, but when I inquired about it the bill magically reduced to $165.00. This restaurant is in need of some serious help if it is to survive. The bartender needs to be consistent with the drinks, and the chef needs to learn how to season food. The menu could use some help and the gelato was not ever close to what a gelato should be. 2 Stars read more

She came back a few minutes later with the water and just dropped them and ran away before we could order.. then she walked over to another table and bolted away again. We asked her if we could order drinks, but she must not have heard us however she heard the table next to us also ask for her attention. Very inattentive all together which is fine if the restaurant is slammed but trust me they were not busy. Finally we ordered drinks and food too because we just didn't want to wait any longer. The food was delicious but the summer Saigon roll was pretty awful. Felt like eating a dry salad. Huge mouthful of dry vermicelli noodles and lettuce with Poached prawn that lacked flavor... Other items were great. We waited with plates empty and drinks empty to order more food and drinks but server never came by. We asked another server to grab our server and she walked over without sense of urgency so we just decided to close out unsure of how long we'd be waiting for the next round. Wow! Great food, great atmosphere and the staff seem genuinely happy and proud to be there. Their menu has a healthy amount of seafood but if you're not into that they have an equal amount of "land". I at first was a bit hesitant to order the sashimi as I'm not normally a fan of seaweed salad but they've changed my mind on seaweed salad. It not only has a wonderful texture, but the color is bright and it isn't very... seaweed-y (for lack of a better description) or soggy. It's a hint of the ocean in every bite, but it doesn't overpower the fish and it's even delicious the next day as leftovers. Their rice is the perfect amount of sticky and it's even more delicious when the juices from the Mongolian beef are in it! The Mongolian beef dish is savory and it has crisp veggies. The beef tastes fresh and it is not stringy. We also ordered the lemon chicken and pad Thai which were also so good! I didn't get pictures of them because I was too busy at that point enjoying my food. The prices are a bit higher, but the portions are quite generous and they gave me a generous amount of house sake as well! Perfect for a date night. I'll admit it, I'm a self confessed foodie, so when I heard Starfish had finally opened in Scottsdale after making a name for itself in California, I had high expectations. That level of hospitality is rare, especially for a brand new opening. Food wise, everything impressed, but the edamame and the lobster macadamia roll were absolute standouts. Fresh, flavorful, beautifully presented, exactly the kind of dishes you keep thinking about afterward. Oh and real crab wontons... stellar As a parent, I also have to mention the kids menu because you can immediately tell a mom had a hand in creating it. It wasn't the typical boring kid food lineup. It was thoughtful, elevated without being complicated, and filled with things kids will actually want to eat. And whatever you do, save room for dessert. The mango pudding was phenomenal, light, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. But the banana wrapped in filo dough was completely out of this world. Crispy, warm, sweet perfection. We ordered the sashimi, it was basic and lacked freshness, almost dry. We also got the Thai Spicy Beef with Basil which tasted battered and fried, we were hoping it'd be grilled. Also tried the miso black cod that had an overpowering fish smell, although the portion was big. I can't say we'll be back.
