Great happy hour options until 6. We enjoyed the Gimbap roll and California roll "but better." They were both good, creative and definitely worth trying. We would probably try something different next time but plenty to explore. It was pretty quiet there when we went on a Wednesday night. The layout and atmosphere are beautiful and location is great. Was craving some Tuesday night sushi and decided to pop in for a light dinner! I like what they've done to revamp the place since taking over (moody lighting, murals on the walls, etc.). However, they do really blast the music. I'm not a huge fan of loud music while I eat, so if you aren't either, this might not be the spot for you. Let's get into the food! We took advantage of their happy hour and tried a few things including: 1. Edamame - I am a bit picky with mine and prefer it steamed without excess oil. They serve theirs pan fried, which I was not a fan of (personal preference of course!) 2. Cali roll but better - pretty decent roll for the price! A little sweet for my taste. 3. Spicy tuna crispy rice - a very one note dish that didn't particularly highlight the fish well. Just tastes like spicy mayo on crispy rice, so if that's your thing, you'll like this one! 4. Poke nachos - the best happy hour dish I tried. Served on 4 chips and was fresh, with depth in its flavor 5. Amber after dark - not a happy hour item, but a delicious roll. The best dish I tried here by far! 6. House white wine - can't beat a $6 glass of wine to go with sushi :) I will say, the best part of our visit was the service. The hostesses were so welcoming, the staff constantly refilled our waters and checked in on us, and we never had to wait too long for our next dish. Not sure if I'd revisit for dinner again, but maybe just for a drink/quick bite. Overall, glad I stopped in to try it out!

I saw this new restaurant on instagram and knew that I need to try. We went for early weekday dinner right after they just officially opened. Rose tteokbokki is tasty with delicious boiled egg. It is unique and different from traditional tteokbokki I had before. Bulgogi bokkeum udon noodle is good but a bit hard to eat with chopsticks since the noodle was cut short, not long. The chef choice sushi has wonderful presentation with cute tiny details. Vanilla pudding with pear is so good and I wish I got some more.

Waiter was very helpful, our dishes all came out at different times and he kept apologizing for the delay. It was very cool décor inside but the music was so loud you can't hear or talk to the people near you, it could have been our seats. Food was very good with a variety of flavors as well all did the restaurant week menu, would give it another try.

This place is quite special, offering high-quality asian dishes in an upscale, almost club-style ambience. The service was very friendly and knowledgeable. On Friday early evening, the place was rather packed but we got a nice table close by the dj. There is also less noisy outdoor patio although understanding the theme, the music was not too loud inside either. I ordered bibimbap which was one of the tastiest ones I have tried so far. Elegant and well balanced flavors. This place is a great new addition to the Old Scottsdale restaurant offering, so we'll be back soon again.

They charge a venue fee. This restaurant is a Americanized version of Japanese food. If your looking for authentic this isn't it, Scottsdale has a lot of other more authentic sushi restaurants. It was nice vibe more like a bar for cocktails and some light bites. I had the Scottsdale rolls and they were too sweet. I had salmon nigiri and the salmon pieces were so small. The fried crab rice cakes were okay. The rice bowl we ordered was good but the hot clay bowl it was served in kept cooking the food and started burning the rice. It was so hot. My cocktail was very good. The main reason for my low rating though is they have a hidden fee on the receipt. They charge a 4% venue fee. We didn't know but they did tell us if next time we don't want to pay it we can let them know? Weird.

Drinks were good and the food was solid overall. Server was great. They don't have happy hour yet, but the staff said it should be starting next week. It felt a little pricey, especially given the limited pescatarian and vegetarian options. Drinks are abut $20-$25 each which is a lot - even for old town. The vibe was a bit mixed--the music skewed younger, so it didn't feel especially romantic and there's a lot of bar seating inside so maybe it's more of a casual pace? That said, the location is great and the patio outside is really nice. One big downside: there's a 4% service fee added at the end with no explanation or signage, which is why I leaned toward 3 stars instead of 4 (I'd say it's more of a 3.5 overall).

Shiso definitely has 5 star potential but everything was a little off during this visit. The menu looks incredible and the ambiance is solid, but the service and food weren't quite there this time. Hoping it all comes together on the next visit!

Checked out Shiso for their grand opening and it did not disappoint. The place looks amazing--super clean, modern, and has a really good vibe the second you walk in. Food was great, presentation was on point, and everything came out quick. You can tell they care about quality and the overall experience. Staff was friendly and the whole night ran smooth, especially for a grand opening. I'll definitely be back. Espresso martini was amazing the roast me softly had the cream which made it top notch

Before anything else, the wagyu fried rice is going to be a regular comfort meal for the rest of my life. The portion sizes are impressive and easily shareable, which is rare with the standard portion sizes in restaurants of this caliber. Not to mention the edamame is beyond addicting. The bang bang cocktail is delicious, as a tequila drinker, having a mixed cocktail that branches outside of a margarita available on a menu is refreshing. The staff is willing to answer questions and make the effort to double check on anything if you have food allergies or particular tastes, which again is very refreshing. With the helpful vibe of the staff and the gorgeous decor, it's hard not to enjoy this place.

    Hawaiian Paradise

This place replaced The Drunk Monk and turned it into a tasteful, chic sushi spot. The vibe is warm and upscale without being stuffy, and the service was phenomenal. I'm not usually a sushi fan, but the Tokyo Gold roll ($18) and pan-fried chicken gyoza ($12) were so good they might make me eat sushi every night. The Nashi Nights cocktail ($16) was perfectly sweet (exactly how I like them) and dangerously delicious. Highly recommend -- we'll be back!

100% WINNER! Good food! All about the vibe, great lighting, music & staff is digging it! Top notch & is a fore sure must eat! Shisooooo baddd!

Came here opening weekend with my husband and some friends. Our server was very bubbly and friendly, she took great care of us. We ordered multiple different starters, rolls & cocktails. All were super fresh and yummy. The crispy tuna rice, hawaiian paradise (roll) and Nashi Nights (cocktail) were all my favorite. We sat outside, gorgeous patio with great lighting. Super cute and inviting. Will definitely be back.

My friends and I came to this place together because I had been before and liked the Korean food here. Food was legit and was a good experience previously. However, the day we came in, the waitress got my friend's order wrong as my friend wanted the bibimbap but the waitress heard something else and brought out a soup. When my friend immediately told her that isnt what she ordered, the waitress (new) proceeded to argue with my friend. I watched incredulously as things started to unfold. The waitress even asked my friend to pronounce bimbimpap again and told her she should learn how to pronounce it better. She kept arguing wirh my friend and mind you, waitess wasnt Korean or Korean American. At this point, I had to step in, as I also heard my friend say bibimbap clearly. The waitress didnt know what she was talking about and at the same time was being rude as heck to my friend. Then, my other friend shows up and orders a bibimpap. When the bibimpap is brought out, I asked her to bring some gochujang for my friend. I didnt know if my friend would like this chili paste, so wanted her to have the option to try it. The waitress again decided to argue about this and at this point, she was really testing my nerve. She said bibimpap doesn't come with gochujang and I am like thinking are you crazy, woman? I am not Korean but I have been eating Korean food for 30+ years, I know what I am talking about. She then asked me to repeat gochujang several times and I was very annoyed at this point. Its like, look lady, you dont know what youre talking about, stop sticking your foot in your mouth and come on, be nice to your customers! Because of this terrible behavior, I asked to speak to a manager, a woman came over and listened to what happened and apologized and thats how we found out she was new. I was beyond frustrated at this point. Despite the horrible service, I still left a 10% tip, but honestly the waitress deserves zilch and needed more training. The food is solid here but I wont be returning with that kind of behavior, I can choose where my money goes, and these days with it being so hard to get by, good luck to this place as I am not coming back.

We came on a weekday afternoon, so it wasn't busy when we arrived. We got seated within the 10 minutes since they were setting up the tables for us. Ordering is fairly easy since they offer combos depending which meats you like more. Everything we ordered was good quality. My favorite meat cuts were the beef tongue, brisket and the intestines. If you're not into eating inside parts of animals, I would recommend getting the brisket or kalbi cuts. The Banchan (sides) were good too. They had fish cake, kimchi, pickled radish and cucumbers available. We also tried the tofu soup, steamed egg and corn cheese which all came out hot and tasted flavorful. This spot is a-la-carte, so you order off the menu and pay by items. My only downside is that they didn't have rice paper here since I don't really eat the white rice since it fills me up too quickly. Other than that, I would come back here again next time I'm visiting family. Service here was awesome too! We were checked on throughout our whole meal and the servers were friendly.

I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!

The only item we didn't care for were the spring rolls, which were mushy. The kimchi fried rice was ok, I'm not sure I'd get it again. I really enjoyed the goon mandu and would definitely order it again, it was crisp, the filling well seasoned and I especially loved the dipping sauce it came with. The shumai had an interesting spongy texture and nice shrimpy flavor which I enjoyed. Warning, the spicy sauce for the wings is not for the faint hearted! I was not prepared for that level of heat but if you enjoy really spicy food you'd like it. It was too much for me and my boyfriend who typically eats really spicy food. Thankfully, the sauce was on the side and the wings themselves were nice and crispy so we ate them without the sauce. The prices were reasonable and portions were large. I would definitely come back!
