First time customer. I ordered take out which consisted of portobello mushroom sand, pick three (pork, shrimp, ribs), onion rings. Again first time customer at 7:30pm on a Friday night. Onion rings were so over cooked, there was no onion present and the rings were like powder when I bit into them. Ribs were dry and not even average tasting. Shrimp was good but over seasoned. Pork was dry/chewy. Side of Mac and cheese was day-old dry. Overall one of the worst meals that my wife and I have had in a long time. Would highly not recommend. read more

My wife and I were in the Elburn area and heard about this new restaurant, so we thought we'd stop in and try it out. I asked the waitress if the ribs were fall off the bone and she responded yes so, I ordered them. I must report otherwise because not only did they not fall off the bone but there were small bones throughout the ribs. Although they were somewhat meaty, I had many small pieces of bone in almost every bite. Very disappointing as well as the final bill was eye opening for what we felt we received. Unfortunately, we won't be going back here for a while if at all. Buyer beware. read more

I wish I caught our waiters name he is a red head, he was excellent, helpful, nice , very attentive , and knew the menu and beers very well. So I'm not a beer drinker but came here with my husband and nephew. Couple of the meads were good but could never drink a full glass of any of them. Beer apparently was pretty good. But what turned us off was when my nephew ordered a tasting of the last 4 items we had not tried and two were totally undrinkable to us. We asked if we could swap them out for two others and the server said no. We were stuck paying for the 2 that we couldn't drink. According to my husband and nephew, this never happens at most breweries. I do wine tastings and they will always swap out a wine you find undrinkable. We're only talking a couple/3 ounces here. Not very good customer relations. Another thing turned me off was the server constantly coming by asking if we were ready for food yet when we clearly told him up front that we had already eaten elsewhere! Annoying! This place is amazing. All around, everything is quality from the food and beer, to the service and ambiance. They are very family friendly. My wife and I brought our 9 month old and every time we visit, we are not alone when it comes to parents with their children. High chairs are available and there's no snobby eyeroll when you ask for one. The staff are amazing. Everyone is so friendly and you feel like a regular even if it's your first visit. Don't like being seated near kids? I get it. They have a large bar with a lot of seating. TV for the sports fans. No volume but if you actually understand your sport do you really need Joe Buck telling you what's going on? Sorry... There's an open kitchen and a gorgeous patio that is well-shaded so you're not dying out there in the summer. They host live music on the patio as well. The food is amazing. It is really well-crafted barbecue. This means depending on when you go, they may not have something you had your eye on because it's being smoked low and slow and not just dropped in a fryer to order. Good news: you can't miss with anything on this menu and it's worth a second visit if you can't get what you wanted on the first visit. The beer is bonkers, in a great way. The "Obscurity" name fits because they're trying things you don't find other places, and they're hitting it out of the park. The service is top notch. I've never experienced any issues. Full disclosure, my wife worked for years in the service industry so we do give service staff a little more leeway. On the other hand, she can spot "bad" service too. We've never had any issues. If there's food that been sold out, you know it right away, and the staff will have recommendations of what they'd suggest and is popular. My wife and I were so impressed we joined their mug club and will be coming back often. A must-visit spot. read more

I actually hadn't even heard of this brewery, but I happened to be out in Geneva for a wedding, and when I searched for breweries nearby, this showed up. I'm glad I looked it up though, since it's a cool little place, albeit pretty far to get to. Sadly I could only sit outside, but I was still able to have some of their beers. I had the Drinking with Giants, and the aleburn, which was a braggot style harvest IPA, a style I had never heard of before, but still enjoyed. I also got a can of launch juice to go. Staff was very nice too. They had quite a lot of beers, and also mead to choose from that looked good, as well as their food menu. If it wasn't so cold, and I could stay longer, I would have tried both some mead and food. If they weren't so far from Chicago where I live I'd definitely go back. Hopefully one day I'll find myself out this way again. read more

Meh, it was okay, but just. I had salmon and although it had great smoked flavor it was pretty dry. Hubs had the fire grilled shrimp and they were good. The beans were kinda pasty, not very saucy and I was pretty surprised that the "street corn" was on the cob and not at all shareable. I guess this place is just not my bar-be-que style. I live in Elburn and was excited to see a brewery opening that served one of my favorite things, BBQ. I've been out of town and wasn't available to visit them until I just returned. I called today excited to try the bbq. I checked out their website and decided I'd like to try several things and noticed they had a pick three that allowed me to do exactly that. I called and the person answering the phone informed me that they could not honor the pick three because according to her they had a limited menu. I ask what that meant and she said they had limited Items, only ribs, brisket, bbq chicken, bbq meatloaf and pork shoulder. So I ask why I couldn't just sample three of them and was told no I could not. I still don't understand why. Most "pick threes" you choose that number of different items rather than settling for just one. I was very disappointed that a new business would not want local residents to sample all their menu items especially when it was on their website menu. Needless to say I didn't feel like they cared for my business and not sure if I'll give them another shot. Maybe when they honor their advertised menu. read more

My review is based on my experience of two phone to go orders. Beer is great. My favorite is the launch juice, but sock puppet and drinking with giants also delicious. Both times tried the pick 3 meat sampler. Ribs and turkey were great. The brisket was only ok. When ordering fries and onion rings the portion sizes are large. The potato salad is tangy with bacon and totally different. I look forward to nicer weather and hopefully sitting outside on their nice patio. read more

We found a hidden gem 15 minutes from our home! We went to Obscurity Brewing nestled in downtown Elburn. Some of us had been to a line dancing lesson the night before in one of their buildings, which is how we discovered it. The food was outstanding. The drinks were outstanding. I don't even know where to begin! I had the shrimp and french fries ( homemade) and chose sweet heat for my bbq sauce. My son had the pulled pork sandwich which was delicious. Baked beans on the side that are better than any I have ever had. Hubby had the ribs and daughter had the "pick 3." It was ribs, brisket and pulled pork. This food will see us returning! We had Anna as a server, and she did not disappoint. We had tons of questions and she was on top of it all. The beers were amazing. Zack served us a wonderful flight of which two really stood out: Launch Juice and Voo Doo Puppet. Good Kiss was also good. Not being a beer drinker, this put me in a conundrum because I was also drinking their delicious pomegranate margarita. I'll definitely get one of these amazing beers next time! ( and probably another margarita:/) The interior of this place was a mix of industrial, functional, and fun. Best of all it was not noisy. You've never had brisket until you've had brisket from obscurity brewing. Holy cow! So so good! I wanted to try everything on the menu. The choices were familiar fare just with supercharged flavor flare. Cocktails were gorgeous and my girlfriends loved them. I tried the Everlasting Gum Drop brew and it was one of the best beers I've ever had. I had the Kisch beer too and that was equally as amazing. (Please note I likely butchered the spelling). The building and atmosphere stole my perfectionist heart. Every detail was meticulously designed and executed to create the perfect scene. The vibe is fun, spacious yet cozy, colorful but subtle, family friendly yet romantic, young yet mature, bold, welcoming, and captures the essence of historic Elburn sprinkled with a dash of urban Chicago. It all comes back to the moment when you take the first bite of the smoked meat though. You may never be the same. Go eat there and thank me later. read more

terrible service , waited for 25 mins for a server to ask for drinks and then they took another 20mins to bring the drinks

Stopped out here on a Saturday after a long day of yard work helping a friend out who lives in elburn. There was 5 in our party plus a baby. After our 20 minute wait for a table we immediately placed an order for food when the server stopped by because we had been looking at the menu while waiting for a table. After we all ordered she told us she wouldn't be able to send our order through to the kitchen right away because they were busy. She said she would let us know once it was sent into the kitchen. We asked the server 3 or 4 times over the next hour when our order could be put in and she kept telling us not yet. When I saw a 4 top table get their food that got sat 15 minutes after us I asked to speak to a manager. I explained what I thought went wrong: 1. They should have told us the kitchen was backed up when we put in our name to wait for a table 2. They should have given us a time estimate of when our food would have been sent into the kitchen after placing our order instead of continually just telling us that they will let us know when they send it in. 3. They should not have served a table food that was sat 15 minutes after us before they even sent our food into the kitchen. They probably wouldn't have even sent ours in if I didn't ask to speak to a manager to complain about the situation. They comped a round of 4 drinks which probably cost them $3 but was a $20 value. It took 1.5 hours for us to get our food after ordering. The table that sat 15 minutes after us was done eating before our food even arrived. My friends wife with the baby had to leave because the baby needed to go to bed so she didn't get to enjoy dinner with us. Food was outstanding but poor communication and ineffective ability to get food out in a first come first serve order gives this place a 1 star for me. read more

We ordered tasters of the Everlasting Gum Drop Juicy Ale, Vanilla Doom Cream Ale, Cherry Maple Train Porter, and Violet's Pom Squad Mead. All were delicious and refreshing! For food, we had a half pound of the brisket which was so tender. Just a forewarning, ask for BBQ sauce because it does not come with it. We also ordered the beans and the fries. Came out for the races with the wife. Figured we'd eat and drink a couple beforehand. Stumbled upon the Obscurity Meadery/cider. Cute little place with a knowledgeable young lady handling the delicious pours. Got hungry and she pointed out the sister Obscurity Brewing across the street. Walked over to discover good beers, and bbq. I get the impression from reading other reviews that some items are better than others. That's pretty much universal with restaurants and nothing different from our experience. The Pulled Pork was good. But that's it. 3 stars good. Same with the slaw. Pickles slices were standard but fresh and crunchy. The 5 star entrees, where the Ribs and Brisket. Delicious. Tender, sweet and smoky. I was impressed. Next time out that way, I'll just order a couple beers and a slab of ribs. If that's all I'd known my review would have been 5 stars. read more

i went to obscurity with my wife , and my sons and their wives. the place is very interesting on the inside very cool décor. the food was good I think we tried everything on the menu. there is only one thing I would complain about but it's a bit nit picky. I wish they had an option on their menu for chicken or even a burger something for customers that are not fans of BBQ. i had the brisket and it was good and I am not a fan of BBQ. be very careful it can get pricey real fast but the food is good the atmosphere is great. we will be back. Great place! Food was amazing! Three for $20 brisket, pork shoulder and Turkey. Sides we ordered were baked beans and coleslaw. The bbq sauce (white) was amazing too. The beer selection was also great! The "mead" was different, very sweet, but had to try it. We did flights (5x) Service was awesome. The staff is very polite and its clear they prioritize their customers satisfaction over profit. i got the 3 for 20 with turkey, brisket, and meatloaf.
