I took two coworkers to lunch at OCabanon and we loved it! It's near the holidays so there were not that many people at lunch. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable about the food and the wine and helped me decide on the beef stew. Good call! It was warm and hearty. One of my work friends had the steak frites, and the other had the steak sandwich. All meals were yummy and, although we were full, the portions are small enough to finish. I cannot begin to tell you how much we loved this spot. It was nice and intimate, not so loud that you cannot hold a conversation and talk! I haven't enjoyed a restaurant in a long time as much as I enjoyed OCabanon! I translate this into "The Nook" because that it how intimate it feels. And of course the food...The Piece de resistance (That's French you know) was the special surprise after our meal, the Saucisse de chocolat" (The Chocolate Sausage), it is literally the perfect ending to a meal at OCabanon! If I never get married then may God bless me with the Saucisse de Chocolate at least once a week. One word: Unacceptable. How this place has good reviews is beyond me! Had a reservation for 9 ladies here today for brunch. Our brunch was at 1:45 originally but we arrived early at 1:15 and were able to be seated. It was great! The french owner/manager greeted us kindly, offered us complimentary champagne, it was fantastic. Looking back now, we should've known something was up immediately. Why would we get free champagne? He didn't know why we were there... About 20 minutes into sitting down we ordered our food and drinks all at once. I'd estimate, about 45 minutes later, our first round of drinks arrived, after waiting and wondering. About 20 minutes later we were advised that the second round of drinks would be on the house due to the slow wait and kitchen service being backed up. Great - free drinks! 30 minutes later -- still no food. 1 member of our party had to leave, not expecting the brunch to take so long and had other plans, she cancelled her order and went on her way. After speaking up, we were offered yet another round of drinks along with some bread and butter (FINALLY) and a plate of cheese. Gee, thanks. Now, where's our brunch. ....more time passes...we ask to speak with the manager...he does not come. ....more time passes...we ask to speak with the manager again...he does not come. Finally at 3:15pm, 2 hours after we arrived, we receive our order. (Cancelled order came out as well, obviously) I have to say, I'm STILL not sure what took so long to make a couple chicken sandwiches, lobster sandwiches and 2 omelets. I really have no comment on the food. I was too disgusted at the amount of time it took to come, that I couldn't enjoy it. 2 more of our table leaves immediately after they eat due to prior obligations. We're now down to 6. We ask to speak with the manager again. He does not wish to speak with us. The waiter gives us 30% off our meal and offers us complimentary dessert. We decline the dessert and ask for the check. Despite all of the apologies by our waiter, Jolis (who was nothing but polite and apologetic), I still don't find anything about this place acceptable. The manager himself is clearly too much of a coward to come and speak to his upset guests and apologize like a good business owner would. I sniffed out the improbably named OCabanon in the summer/fall season and made an exploratory trip at that time. We had extremely attentive, grand-opening-level service from the Fancophone wait staff who guided us through the tapas-style menu and the extensive wine list. I was intrigued by the Lyonnaise focus of the food, but at that time we stuck with the tapas menu, which gave me a chance to try nibbles like Empanadas Bourguignon (beef), Figue & Duck Proscuitto, Smoked Salmon Croque, Cod Fish Brandade, and Croque Sardine. Everything was delicious, especially the croques. The gf ordered their risotto (mushrooms, black truffle oil, carrots, leeks, and parmesan). If you want to keep things simple, this is an excellent choice: one of the best risottos I've had in New York, creamy with a firm enough consistency. On a more recent visit, I dove into some oysters (very good), followed by the pate de campagne maison (homemade country pâté with pork, red wine & parsley). I'm an infrequent pate eater, but this one was phenomenal. The Coppa (Berkshire pork shoulder trimmed & seasoned with a wine & spice) was overkill and should be shared by at least 2 or 3 people, but if you're a fan of salty cured meats it's a good starter. I really like what they're doing here, and I've both brought and referred large groups to the restaurant. It's a significant addition to this heretofore anonymous dining scene. Thank god for OCabanon for always giving me great food before a show at Madison Square Garden. If it weren't for this French little gem, I would probably be stuck eating wieners from a hot dog cart for dinner (nothing wrong with that, of course, but I'm a growing girl and can't survive on just wieners) each time. So when my friends and I bought tickets to see Aziz Ansari (hilarious, btw) at MSG, it was no question that we would be dining at OCabanon beforehand. Don't judge me, but I never order an actual entree when I'm here because I'd rather have two smaller dishes that I can sample instead of one large one. Yup, you guessed it, tapas are probably one of my favorite things in the whole entire world. So in lieu of an entree, I usually opt for the combo of Escargots in Garlic + Parsley Butter and Pate en Croute Maison. While you may think that 2 appetizers might be enough food, lemme tell you, you are wrong. Trust me, I can eat a lot for a girl my size and both of those dishes are always enough to leave me impressively full. The escargots are as good as any that I've ever had. Garlicky, buttery and delicious, each piece is so flavorful and tasty. And don't even get me started on that sauce. Definitely save some bread for it because you'll want to have enough to lap up that sauce. I wouldn't leave a single drop behind. The pate is also great as well. Not only does it taste amazing, but there's so much of it too. You literally get a huge slab of pate for this so-called appetizer. With the amount you get, it definitely seems more like an entree. I was not complaining one bit. And of course I finished every bite of that meaty goodness. So if you're looking for a restaurant with great food before a show at Madison Square Garden or even before or after your bus at Penn Station, look no further. It's out of this world. Your waiter/waitress will know what that means! Came here as a party of 8 for Sunday lunch to celebrate a baby sprinkle. My friend had been communicating with one of the owners, Armel, to pre-order bottles of rose (which were delicious) and an appetizer platter and he specifically made sure to be there that day to ensure that everything went great. The appetizer was a mix of shrimp empanadas, guacamole, figs, crostini, and mussels and it was both plentiful and beautifully presented. I ordered the ratatouille with burrata, which was spectacular!!!!! So sooo flavorful and absolutely recommend. My friends all enjoyed their entrees too -- mussels, burger, salad nicoise, steak tartare. We also ordered several desserts -- creme brûlée (my favorite), chocolate log (which I felt was too rich), profiteroles (I liked the ice cream), and apple tart. Armel brought over more than enough for all of us to share in a beautiful display. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, but most of all Armel and his server were incredibly attentive & wonderfully engaging to ensure that we were enjoying our dining experience. Loved this place! We went there for a late wine and cheese. I really liked the decor and ambience. We had a bottle of wine which was heavily recommended by our waiter. It was very good and on the cheaper side. Selection of cheeses was amazing. There is really no other way of describing it. They had some really exotic ones with very unique taste. Then we decided on desert. We wanted to get "sweets" for desert however waiter recommended macaroons instead. It seemed like a weird recommendation with so many great macaroon places around the city, but I went with it. I kid you not, these were hands down best macaroons I've ever had. I organized my sister's baby shower at O'Cabanon. I was able to easily reserve a table using Opentable.com. Typically on that website, you cannot reserve a table for more than 6 people. I was able to book a table of 7, and an hour prior to my reservation time, I called to add one more person to our table. They easily accommodated this change. I have been contacting Armel from O'Cabanon via email to request special arrangements for this event. I was able to preorder apps and bottles of champagne days before so the restaurant can have all that ready on the table before my guests arrive. I must have emailed him several times, and Armel always being so attentive and responsive! The service was wonderful. My guests enjoyed the food. They raved about it; they particularly enjoyed the tapas plate, steak tartare, and the burger and fries! I feel fortunate to have found this restaurant on Yelp. Planning was easy, food was delicious, staff so warm. I shared with Armel that I'm visiting Paris in a few days; next day, he emailed me with a list of things to do in Paris. He even recommended we visit his friend's restaurant in Paris and that we should let them know that Armel sent us! They are excellent. Gf and I came here as a lunch spot before enjoying a paint and sip event. I went in not expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed myself. We came here on an early September weekend and sat near the entrance with the facade wide open. It was excellent weather for it. Behind our table was a quaint map of France with different wine bottles surrounding it, and arrows pointing to the location on the map where they derive from. Creative. The place is much larger than it looks from the street. The bar is long on the left side and beyond it is a small set of tables, regular and elevated, where you can enjoy a relaxing time. What you can't see is that beyond that is a larger back room with more seating. The bathrooms are beyond that room and am happy to say are clean and inviting. That's weird to say right? Well they are though. We enjoyed some escargot to start. Can't say I'd order it again. Not the best, but not the worst either. I'd want to try something different when I go again. I ordered the half chicken and the gf ordered the risotto. She enjoyed her dish. I loved mine. My chicken was succulent and delicious. It came with a mash that was awesome too. For drinks, we enjoyed some wine and I also had a cocktail. A golden something. It was ok. Bourbon, ginger beer, with a few other things. I'd stick with wine. I had a nice Pinot Noir I found on the creative map behind us. It was wonderful. Dessert was delicious and I also got to enjoy a free latte courtesy of the yelp check-in. Highly disappointed.. we were expecting so much more. We visited around 10PM on a Saturday night and the place was dead. We were the only people seated, which was fine with me since I wasn't looking for a loud space. We ordered the risotto and seafood pasta. The risotto is basically a vegetable risotto where the carrots were undercooked/crunchy, onions were not chopped but sliced, and lacked the mushroom flavor we were mainly interested in. The seafood pasta was even more disappointing as it basically didn't have ANY flavor. The shrimp was big and juicy but that was about it. I ate the shrimp and left the rest untouched. I was searching for a restaurant with really good food for a group dinner. It's very challenging to find a place in NY where you can bring a large group and sit in a private room. Generally there's a minimum food/beverage requirement. I found OCabanon through Opentable and also checked it out in person. We had a wonderful time here. Because guests were arriving at different times and had different dietary needs, we needed to do separate checks. The restaurant was told this at the time of the reservation and had no problem with it. We sat in the back room which is lined with cases of wine bottles. The waitress kept track of our large group with coat checks at each place (clever!). The food was delicious and everyone was very pleased with their meals.
