But honestly, if you're craving seafood and you want to make it at home, there's no better place to get it from than here. The quality of fish and seafood is consistently good, so I'm willing to pay a bit more to ensure the food I'm eating tastes fresh. The ambiance is, well chaotic fish counter. There's always a bit of a line in here and it can feel overwhelming when deciding what you want to order. The service is swift and does move things along, and although the guys here like to keep the line moving they are happy to answer any questions you might have, or give you a minute to decide (though they'll move on to another customer while you do so, so take your time). I feel like I remember it being cash only at some point, but I was able to pay with credit card on my most recent visit. read more

Came here on a whim, wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I've never cooked fish.... but I ended up getting a Branzino and a few pieces of the clean shrimp. There are two different Branzinos they offer, one is wild caught and the other is farm raised. The Employee was extremely helpful and patient , I asked many questions and inquired about how fresh the fish was. I ended up going with the farm raised because they were smaller. They were able to gut the fish, cut off the head and tail for me. This was extremely convenient since I've never handled a whole fish. While he was gutting my fish, I noticed they had various shrimps, some where already cleaned out. I ended up getting 3 shrimps because sadly I've never cooked shrimp. The employees were kind, the fish was fresh, and they have a lot of different options. Will come back! And for those who are wondering, I ended up overcooking my shrimp. First time trying this fish market after years in Astoria passing right by it. Wow was I missing out. The fish I got was so fresh and delicious! I wanted a nice fresh fish for dinner, and I never seem to find good options in the regular supermarket so I decided to stop in here. After browsing the options, I got the Flounder. It was a BIG, nice, clean fillet of fish. Perfectly cleaned and filleted, ready to cook. I went home and made it right away, doing an oven broiled type fish situation with my new piece of fish, and wow it was delicious. Happy I went into this great local fish market so I don't have to go to an expensive restaurant to have a nice fish dinner. I would come here every week. I never really cook fish, and am a basic home cook so was reluctant to ever go into this market and shop for fish, but this turned out so good just baked in the oven with some basic seasonings. So fresh and delicious! I felt like I was on an island and treating myself to a fresh fish dinner. Will definitely be coming back and getting that Flounder again, and maybe try the other fish, too. Fresh fish always. Oysters r really good. I get the salty ones... the people inside behind counter are very nice. They will also ask if you want the oysters shucked already and they put on ice in a tray with lemon. Ask for the salty ones.. yummy... all varieties if fresh fish to choose from. I LOVE this place. I grew up in a Greek family and we LOVE seafood. My father owned several restaurants so to say I've been spoiled with the best seafood is an understatement. When i found this market it was the answer the my seafood loving prayers!! I always know they will give me the best recommendations, clean the fish quickly and well, and I love that they throw some lemons in with every order. It reminds me of the fish markets in Greece where they have what they have and its fresh, delicious, and local. Not to mention their prices are AMAZING! The soft shell crabs are unbelievable and I cannot stop making their red snapper. The whole fish selection is perfection. CANNOT GO WRONG! read more

My issue with OFM is the fact they do not indicate where fish is from, whether previously frozen or wild caught. These are big factors in purchasing seafood. I can be getting farm raised which is contaminated from poor hygiene or imported from Vietnam, etc. I only buy US or Canada wild caught. read more

I pass by this place all the time but finally stopped in. I had my baby with my in our massive stroller and they were super nice to us. They opened the door for me and played with my daughter while I looked at the fish. I got large shrimp and soft shell crab, which they cleaned for me. Both were fresh and delicious. The prices were good. The sea bass and salmon looked great. I'll come back anytime I want fish. The store itself was very clean and compared to most fish shops smell free. This is definitely going to be my new go to spot for seafood. read more

So on the way to pick up some meat from a friend of mine in Astoria (meal will be coming tomorrow live), we stumble across Ocean Fish Market. So my beloved goes in to check it out. She sees something that she hasn't been able to find in New York City. Perfectly shaped, large bodied, whole calamari, from head to toe. The owner was very accommodating since he realized that my beloved knew something about cooking and he selected not only the calamari but also the little clams, and even checked individually to make sure each one was closed and fresh. Then upon hearing that we wanted a pound of swordfish selected one that was exactly 1 pound,And it was absolutely beautiful with exactly the aroma that you expect, which is simply the sea and nothing more. Anyhow, we get several to try and my beloved creates this meal. Which I have to say is the best I have ever had in my whole entire life. And no...it's not because I'm biased because it's that damn good. This place was fantastic... however the ownership changed and their fish is UNACCEPTABLE ( I really mean that) the last two times I purchased seafood it was gross... the shrimp smelled awful later in the evening, the texture was off and I threw it all away. In early April, I ate a supremely questionable piece of fish from Ocean Fish Market. My husband and I are local Astorians and had, up until then, been a huge fan of the market, and bought pieces of chilean sea bass once a week. This piece of fish, even when cooked, tasted and smelled like actual trash, and instead of spitting it out and losing out on the $10 (a lot for a post-grad-school woman and her recently unemployed husband), I swallowed bite after bite. Penny wise and pound foolish. A few hours later, I was VIOLENTLY sick. I threw up four separate times, with three rounds of vomit per time, and had diarrhea. I even threw up out of my nose, the force to purge was so intense. I hadn't thrown up in seven years, and have only vomited three or four times in my entire 31 years, so this was clearly an uncommon occurrence. I was weak and truly miserable for the first 72 hours. I am sorry to be so graphic, but the illness related to the spoiled piece of fish has been incredibly painful. Nearly two months later, I have spent hundreds of dollars and hours of my time on doctor visits and tests to determine why I am STILL SICK as a result of this spoiled fish. The doctors think it could be bacterial or even parasitic. I've lost 12 lbs, have no appetite, major heartburn, and have a stomach so distended, I look 9 months pregnant. It may even have triggered a secondary condition due to the severity of the original food poisoning. When I told this to our landlords, long-time Astorians and property owners out here, they said "we warn people NEVER to shop there, we know too many people who have gotten sick from their fish." So please, take it from me. The fellows are nice, yes. The fish is laid out all lovely. Prices are decent. But these are all meaningless when you're heaving your guts out because they sold you a piece of spoiled fish. I may never eat fish again because all I see is sickness, and we truly will never, EVER patronize this establishment again. read more

Best fish market in the City. I've been coming here for 4 years. Always professional, helpful and clean. My favorite interaction with the owners went something like this: Me: What's fresh today? Fish Monger: everything's fresh - what's in season is the black sea bass. Very good. I've purchased fish for bouillabaise (including scorpion fish!), scallops in the shell, urchin, sea bass, monkfish, whole fresh octopus(!), squid, fresh anchovies (delicious), sardines, rouget, porgies, trout, red snapper, mackeral, branzino, shrimp, blowfish(!), lobster, crabs, oysters, mussels, and so many more things. Everything, i mean everything has been delicious, fresh and tasty. They have seasonal fish like live eel and john dory. The most amazing thing about this place is that the owners have their own boats. Hence, their prices are low (they are their own source) and quality superior. Also, if you look at their walls by the phone, you'll notice that all of the amazing fish restaurants in astoria order their fish from this market. Nestled on busy 30th ave, its easy to miss if if you aren't looking for it. I wandered in here a week ago to buy some clams and was shocked at how much cheaper all the prices were to their down the street competitor. Fish is all fresh and the people who work there are extremely helpful. Everybody needs a place to call "their local fish monger", and I will proudly be bestowing this title on Ocean Fish Market. Let me preface this by saying that I have not written a Yelp review in years -- so this is pretty serious. I went into Ocean Fish Market for the first time last week and was completely horrified. I watched the man at the counter grab peeled shrimp with his bare hands (no gloves at all). He then proceeded to take the customer's cash in the same hand that he used to grab the shrimp (again, no gloves or hand washing) - and moved onto the next customer. THIS is how people get sick. I am contacting the NYC Department of Health and I strongly advise Yelpers to stay far, far away from this place. Gross. read more

I went out of my way to swing by here to pick up some live lobster to make for dinner (June 3rd) - I read great things here on yelp and was excited to give it a try. We picked up two live (1lb) lobsters and were charged $28.75. Fine, but probably could've went elsewhere and gotten the same quality for a little less. I checked my card statement today and saw that this place had added on $20 to my card for some unknown reason. Naturally, I called them to inform them of what must have been a mistake considering $48.75 was clearly not what was written on the receipt and would be absurd to charge for two lobsters. Whatever disgusting human answered the phone had the nerve to start immediately screaming about how I was lying over the price discrepancy. The manner in which this employee handled the call was totally absurd and will have me warning all my Astoria friends and family to STAY AWAY from this place considering stealing from their customers and cursing them out on the phone is apparently accepted behavior. I used to take my grandmother here often. I remember the people there calling her "signora" and giving her great service. If I were reviewing it then, I would have given it 4 stars. It's a decent place, and the selection was okay. I had asked if they had any catfish, and the guy behind the counter pointed to the haddock. It looked good (and was definitely fresh), but it's not the same thing. The prices were fine. I didn't see anything outrageously high. If I could, I'd raise my review by a half star. The fish isn't fresh as it is slimey and they exaggerate the quality of it. I wanted some raw tuna to make Hawaiian poke and had asked the Hispanic fish monger if the tuna was sushi quality. He said that it was and I believed it. Got home and prepared most of the tuna for poke and reserved some for pepper tuna. After making the poke, the tuna bad a slightly slimey texture and the flesh was chewy! I thought it might be my marinade but it couldn't be. I didn't enjoy it very much and ended up throwing away half of it. Ok fine but the day after, I start to prepare the remaining tuna and I noticed it was slimey like the poke but this was just raw and not marinated. It was pretty obvious at that point that the tuna was on the verge of spoiling. Disgusting. I might be able to find better seafood at my local Chinese supermarket, and that says a lot about Ocean fish market. Never coming back here again. read more

This place is to my partner's and my knowledge the best fish market at least in Queens, in terms of freshness, variety, and costs, overall. Most fish markets including larger supermarkets like Whole Foods intend to sell fish that are immediately ready for cooking, and as a result you find chunks of large fillets in their showcases. This place of course has a variety of fresh fillets, from salmon to monk fish. But what is notable about this market is its great selection of whole fish: sea basses, bronzini, sardine, mackerel, porgy, snappers, dorado, trout, calamari, octopus and many others... If you love cooking fish and are willing to try various ways of cooking, it will be exciting to see their showcase and you just cannot help imagining how each fish will turn out and taste! That way you'll not just enrich your knowledge in seafood but will also improve your diet. If you don't like cooking, then just grab their fresh oysters and beer and you still can take advantage of this great local fish market. You can buy fresh fish for prices you don't see in Manhattan.
