I visited Jose Fish Market last weekend and must revise my evaluation downward one star to three stars. The service is still great at the counter and the value proposition is still there. However, something has happened to the rice. Let me first correct a few things from my previous review. The front awning does have the name of the restaurant on it. Jose Fish Market is not brightly painted or printed on the awning. Second, they have flounder instead of trout. The flounder is still a generous piece of fish for $11 for the platter with rice and peas. This time the rice and peas were not edible in my opinion. I do not know what happened, but something was very very off about the rice. I would rather have the fish alone and would be hesitant to have the rice ever again here. The chicken wings at $10 for four and fries is still a great value and the wings were crispy and great with the hot sauce, even the fries were good with hot sauce. read more

It's essentially a fried seafood shack. It's not pretty, it's not fancy, it's cheap and quick seafood. The Korean lady in the front is nice. It's a quick eating spot, there is a long counter on both sides of the restaurant where you eat along the wall or a island that fits around 10 people. It's a very humble working class restaurant. The food: Soup- it's pretty much a Fisherman's stew. It's fish chunks with assorted vegetables, it's actually pretty good. It's filling, warm and flavorful. Flounder with rice- I was kinda surprised how much I enjoyed the flounder, I would definitely get it again. It was fried nicely and the fish was firm and meaty. The combos are all super affordable. I got a fried fish with fried shrimp. You get to choose between rice or fries. I chose rice because I did not want more fried food. The rice wasn't great, but it wasn't awful. It wasn't greasy. They really do their seafood well. I definitely recommend the seafood.I wish there were a little sign that said how much add-ons would be because I would've loved to order their fried scallops and plantains. It would also be great to just have a platter of JUST fried seafood as an option without any extra carbs. As I was sitting at a table, this older man was playing guitar which was a bit loud at first, but then I got used to it and it was nice. It was a good experience. The place was busy, but not packed. Another thing I noticed while sitting there for 15-20 minutes or so is that a lot of people ordered their soup. All the locals had a bowl, but I was too full to have any, so i'll have to revisit the store for some. It can get a bit loud in there since the door is kept open and it is located directly under a train station. A lot of people come in and try to sell you things. Fresh Fried Fish Heaven! This is one of Jackson Heights hidden gems! Best fish shack in the area. I love this place! You simply have to come and try it. I recommend their fried flounder combo that comes with fried flounder filet and Asian fried rice or fries or the Fresh fried Tilapia (not the breaded one, but the one where you choose the fish and they deep fry it for you). It used to focus more on selling *fresh* seafood and has recently morphed into the only spot in Elmhurst/Jackson Heights where you can get your fill of Americanized fried seafood goodness. The meals are deals - most under $8. The selection is a bit limited though (a couple types of fish, shrimp, scallops, fries) when compared to other fish places that decided at some point to install deep fryers. (No fresh calamari :( although, they serve soup!) JFM's is definitely a good quick-fix spot (keep in mind that it's definitely NOT higher-end quality so one should not expect Chip Shop/Molly Blooms/A Salt & Battery meal here.) where you can hang under the tracks and chow down on fried goodness while watching free cable. read more

Who doesn't like fish and chips or fried food? Well I don't usually eat fried food but I was in the area and have always passed by this place for years but never went inside. Few weeks ago we did a lil food crawl in JH and we shared the number 3 which has fried fish, shrimp and scallop with fried rice for $6.50? It's a very simple breading and just fried.. not much flavor really. So it's not horrible, but it's just so damn plain.. it's affordable which is a plus if you're on a budget, but it's not something that will bring you back unless you really like cheap fried food. It wasn't greasy at least, but I still expected so much more with the 4-5 star reviews. I also didn't care for the veggie fried rice. When I hear fried rice I expect it to have that "Wok Hei" and this definitely doesn't have that. It's also a bit greasy. Once again just plain and not really flavorful, I usually make my own or buy some from TJ's. I would not come back. First of all the combos here are ridicolous, If you get any combo with fried rice or french fries OH MY GOD it is so worth it either way. Cheap deep fried seafood goodness! Jose Fish Market is owned and operated by a Korean family. Yes, it's Korean. Many of his employees are Hispanic. I come usually during lunch hours and it's the Korean ahjussi who runs the front. They have a variety of seafood platters on their menu. Most of them are under $10. The best in my opinion is #8. It's fried shrimps, scallops, and crab sticks w/ fried rice for just $5.50. I'm not crazy about the fake crab meat. I would prefer if they just gave more of shrimps and scallops instead. What's really surprising about their platters is their fried rice. The fried rice here is amazing! It's veggies, no meat, nada and it's still really good. If you'd like to dine in, there's plenty of seats here. It's open and spacious. No waiters, it's kinda like cafeteria style. Also, for a fish market, this place doesn't reek of fish at all. Their fish market sections seems pretty small in the back end of the store. They also have raw oysters on the menu but they look pretty small. So this place smells like an actual fish market and you would think that it means that the fish is super fresh but NOPE that is NOT the case. We ordered: 1. whiting and fries - whiting was not fresh at all and super disappointing because the fry on it was perfect 2. I liked the scallops but not fond of the breading mix. To me the was bit to heavy and tasteless. The shrimp had a weird not to fresh taste to me. It was masked by the oil used to fry in. Fish was ok that me and my guess had. She has eaten fish from Hong Kong and was not impressed with the varieties or types offered. I would give 2 stars for food. Fried seafood (and chicken wings) done fresh and fast for $6-8 with rice or fries. Ordered a fish, shrimp, and scallop combo with fries (#3) for $6. Everything was thrown in the fryer after I ordered and was done in less than 5 minutes. Fish came out great, crispy outside with a moist inside and not overdone so that the fish is mushy. Shrimp wasn't rubbery although the breading didn't adhere that well. Most surprisingly was that the scallops were not overdone either. A lot of places that are much fancier than this place will overcook their scallops but this place did it very well. The portion size for the single order could probably be split comfortably between two people. Standard condiments are available (ketchup, hot sauce, and tartar sauce) at the tables and also packed with takeout orders. How could you not give this place 5 stars?! If you are in the mood for fried fish, all different types of fish, then this is the only place I would recommend to anyone. All the combination dishes come with fries or rice and some lime wedges. Every table has 3 huge containers of hot sauce, ketchup, and tarter sauce that you can use as much as you want. The flounder is much better than the whiting if youre choosing between the two. Every time ive been there, the battered flounder comes straight outta the fridge and into the fryer so you can see that it's fresh. Fish is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I see a lot of people order the fish soup but I haven't tried it yet. I've only had the fried seafood combo plates here. There's nothing really spectacular about this place, the food, or the service.
