We came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch after receiving some good recommendations from friends. There is a small parking lot and we were lucky to snag a spot. It's a pretty big restaurant with plenty of seating and there were plenty of open tables when we came. Hubby ordered the Phở Dặc Biệt (combo of eye of round, brisket, tendon, and meatballs) while I had the Bún chả Hanoi (Hanoi style grilled pork and pork patties in a papaya fish sauce). Hubby added extra noodles to his dish to share with our toddler but we realized we didn't need to when the food arrived. The portions are big and I could have easily shared my dish with my toddler (I didn't end up finishing mine so hubby did the honors of devouring mine for me). The meat from the Bún chả Hanoi was flavorful and there was a decent amount of noodles. I just wish there was more fish sauce that came with the dish. Overall, we had a good meal and will be back to try more menu options! read more

We came here to eat pho for lunch. The broth is amazing and it took away my headache. I ordered hot tea and it was the best I ever had. Outside was tricky to navigate to finally find this place and also to park, they do have limited space to park beside the restaurant. Inside was decorated very nicely compared to outdoors. The server and staff were attentive and as soon as we ordered within 10 minutes, our food came out. The bathroom was spacious, and I believe it had three stalls for the females. I'm not sure why they call this place ocean grilling bar because I thought it was American food but it's not. Delicious! So happy we don't have to go all the way to Argyle from the SL to get good pho. Plus parking is super easy because they have a small lot. Our server was super kind and attentive. The pho broth looked pretty oily but didn't taste or feel greasy, the broth was super rich and we opted for the fresh pho noodles which were thicker. This meal made me sad...that I only have one stomach and I can't order more different dishes to try. We ordered 10 delicious Vietnamese-Thai dishes to share between 4 people and we were beyond stuffed! To order, we scrolled through pictures on the iPad menu, read through the paper menu for English translation and then pressed "add to cart" for 10 items that interested us. While you can't "place an order" through the tablet, you can use it to keep track of the dishes you want to order and make it easier for the server taking your order. See the receipt for the list of stuff we ate, but what was super addictive were the chicken cartilage, snails stir-fried in salt, spicy clams and the seafood hot pot broth The service was attentive and thoughtful. They changed our plates about 4 times during our meal as our plates filled up with shells. They provided an ice bucket (last week for BYOB unfortunately) and extra napkins when requested. I came across this Vietnamese restaurant on Instagram and had been dying to give it a try. The restaurant is located near Chinatown. Since it's not in the main area, it has its own parking lot which is a plus. The restaurant is very spacious and more updated than your typical Vietnamese restaurants. That said, just drop in and guarantee you will have a table. They currently have a Yelp check-in perk - crispy egg rolls which were pretty good. They have a large menu with items ranging from pho, fried rice/noodles to seafood and hotpot. We tried their pho with rare beef and brisket. The broth was rich and flavorful and the meat was tender. It also came in a large portion. I just wish the broth was hotter though. My personal favorite was lemon grass French sea snails. The snails were huge and a little chewy. The food was not coming out quick enough and the kitchen could not keep up with the orders going in. I appreciated the complimentary sesame ball dessert. I've had this place on my list for a while. First time here for a late lunch. There was plenty free parking in their lot which is a HUGE plus. I didn't make reservations but was seated right away. The place looks so cute, very instagram-able. There was 2 tvs going on, but honestly I was not interested in that at all. I came here specifically for the pho. I checked in on Yelp and was generously offered free egg rolls for my table. I started with a Jasmine tea and Diet Coke, which came out right away. I ordered the combo pho, and it also came out right away; piping hot, which is much appreciated and comforting given the sudden change in season. That's Chicago for you. Came here from out of town and pleasantly surprised with the food and experience! Got the Bun Bo Hue ($16) and Pho Dac Biet ($18). The bowls were HUGE. We were shocked when they came out. Unsurprisingly, both of us were unable to finish our food and left both noodles and meat in our bowls. Flavor-wise, both broths were good and flavorful. The meat in the BBH was a little tough, but nothing too bad. The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. We were checked up on by multiple staff members throughout our meal. The place seemed very clean and modern. I liked how they had a large variety of sauces available at each table, including sriracha, fish sauce, fish sauce with chilis, hoisin sauce, and soy sauce. They also had a cute carafe with plenty of water (maybe too much??) at each table. We came in around 7PM on a Sunday night and there were only a few tables occupied. The restaurant was nice and heated, which was super pleasant walking into from the frigid outdoor air. The Bun Bo Hue was slightly spicy but very fresh, it wasn't very heavy but the portions were huge (can take home leftovers). The sticky wings were tasty, sweet and savory. We were very excited to try this newish place out. The parking lot was full, but we found street parking out back. Service was excellent, super friendly and attentive and food came out very quickly. We also loved that they brought a big water jug to self serve as we needed. Decor and ambiance were very nice and the restaurant itself is huge. The food was solid. Somewhat traditional, but not extraordinary. Small tweaks needed on many dishes (pork chop a little dry, snails a little over done/chewy, lots of mayo on the sandwich). This was my second time visiting this restaurant. When I came the first time near the grand opening, I thought the food was so so. But this time around, all of the dishes were great, except for the fried spring rolls, which I thought was perhaps a bit too hard and not flavorful enough. The spring rolls were excellent and pretty much what you would expect. The fried chicken was yummy. It was still crispy even though it was mixed with the sauce on top. The Thai Kumquat green tea was so clean and refreshing, I ordered another. I ordered the grilled pork sandwich, which I finished quickly. The bread was just right, not too soft and not too hard. The grilled pork was flavorful, very similar in taste to the grilled pork skewers that we also ordered. The pho was yummy too. The broth had a nice complex taste that was comforting at the same time. All of the dishes came out within a few minutes. I was impressed with the speed of the service. The servers came around to pick up finished plates on a regular basis. The decor looks tropical and green, and takes you away to another culture. I will definitely visit again. read more

We stumbled upon this new Vietnamese spot on Canal and it was a lovely surprise. My husband and I were searching for a spot for dinner around Chinatown while running errands and noticed a bright neon sign that read "Ocean Grill & Bar: Vietnamese Cuisine." It was right across from the Park to Shop. We turned the car 180° (actually just a series of right turns), parked and walked right into an oasis. They have a humble parking lot right by the entrance, and if you're unable to find a spot there, you'll find more spots behind the restaurant in the alleyway. The decor contained palms trees on the walls, rattan lamps from the ceiling, black wood and rattan chairs, and the whole place was re-modeled and redone (from the Chinese restaurant it was before). I loved the space! This spot just opened about a week ago and they are in their soft opening phase. They have paper take-out menus (for now) with more permanent menus with expanded items soon to come. I hope this means their bar will soon offer alcoholic drinks, although I know that part requires permitting etc. At the moment, they do have drinks on their menu like caphe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee), fresh sugarcane juice, soft drinks, Thai milk teas, and other drinks I am dying to try like Vietnamese Salted Coffee, Vietnamese corn milk, and mung bean milk, and pennywort juice. What we ordered: Fish Sauce Chicken Wings (6 pcs) Pork Spring Rolls e.g. the spring rolls without shrimp Pho Dac Biet Pho with Rare Beef, Tendon, and Meatballs Their wings were made with in-house fish sauce and I could eat the sauce over rice and be happy. They came out fresh from the fryer and were SO GOOD! The spring rolls also came out in a bamboo tricycle served on a banana leaf and I just loved their presentation. The pho had clear, flavorful broth, and I like to add fresh slices of jalapeños and Thai basil to my bowl. It was delicious! Ocean Grill & Bar served some of the best bowls of pho in the area (in my opinion) and this is what makes them stand out. I am really rooting for this place to become a new staple for locals, Chicagoans, and visitors alike. The space is so cute here! It's located on the outskirts of the Chinatown area and there are a few parking spots in their private lot. We got the spring rolls (A1), pho dac biet (S6), and grilled scallops with scallion oil (O14). The spring rolls were average and the grilled scallops were delicious!!! We wanted to try the razor clams but they ran out that day. The pho broth here is pretty decent but the tendon in the pho was very hard and the noodles were overcooked so it was a soggy mess. I think next time I'd come and only do the seafood (maybe try to hotpot?) but i'd pass on the pho here. The service is pretty fast which I liked because our food came out fairly fast! read more

The wife and I dropped in here to try this newish restaurant for a weekend lunch.  I wanted to like them more but the food quality made for a mediocre and disappointing outing.   On the plus side, they have their own convenient parking lot, and there are apparently two of them.  One is right by the restaurant entrance and is a small lot, but to the north on the other side of a fence, there is another lot that is also theirs, but it's not obvious.  Their dining room is spacious, colorful, airy, comfortable, modern, and inviting. They also have a couple of big circular tables for family meals.  Our server Phuc was also nice, friendly, and attentive and spoke good English.  With a Yelp check-in, we also received a complimentary order of their crispy egg rolls. So, we ordered: - complimentary crispy egg rolls with Yelp check-in - D6 Vietnamese salted coffee, $7 - S7 spicy lemongrass soup (basically pho), $15.95 - C1 Com Bi Suon Cha pork chop, $17.95 - D22 grilled razor clams with scallion oil, $19.95  I will say the salted coffee (which tasted like a caramel coffee) was nice and refreshing.  They charged $7 despite the menu stating $6.25, but we didn't quibble as they have a pricing caveat written on their menu.  The areas of disappointment were as follows.  Without saying anything to us, for the D22 razor clams, they served us what they call Pacific razor clams.  This was a $19.95 dish with 3 of these clams and they were very chewy besides being stingy for the price.  They did not look like the "normal" and tender Atlantic razor clams we were used to having everywhere else and the server said they had been out of those for about a month and he agreed these were different.  He assured us we would like them and would pay for them if we didn't, but we didn't like them.  When I told him what we thought, he said he would let the owner know.  (I also didn't make him follow up on his promise).  I otherwise liked our server and didn't blame him, but maybe I should have as we were not very happy about that dish. A water carafe was dropped off at our table and I liked that idea.  But the water was warm, and not chilled, and it had that unfiltered tap water taste and it was yucky. The S7 spicy noodle soup was something we wanted to try for a different taste.  But it wasn't spicy at all by any means, and it was like any other bowl of pho, except the protein contents were somewhat more exotic (like blood cubes and pork hock).  The C1 pork chops (2 of them) were dried out and overdone, so it was another mediocre dish. Overall, I'll go with 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.  For Vietnamese, it was a relatively pricey and disappointing outing but as with any new restaurant I'm glad we gave them a try. read more

We stopped in on a weeknight for dinner. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. The menu is quite extensive. We had the pho, bun cha gio, bun bo hue, and grilled clams. The best dish was the pho. I didn't think the bun cha gio or the bun bo hue were very good. The vermicelli noodles seemed a little hard, not as fresh as they could be. The bun bo hue was a little salty. The clams were bad, tough and inedible, but they were nice enough to remove it from our bill. I would consider giving this place another try, the next time I am in the mood for pho. read more

Razor clam in garlic oil was delish, the sauce is spicy (we weren't told so it was a surprise) but the sauce makes it very flavorful. We end up making another order of it cuz we like it so much. It's very bland without the sauce so if you can't eat spicy, it prob won't taste good. Lemongrass clam was really good too, they also come with a dipping sauce. Salted yolk snail, is alright. I can tell the snail is fresh but the coating doesn't taste like salted yolk, but a little cheesy, according to my friend. The crab was not good, the flavor was good but the crab itself was not fresh. I'm from the west coast, I know good Dungeness crab. Totally not worth the $60 for the one crab, it's also pretty small. The waiter made it sound way bigger when I asked the size. Instead of telling me the crab (by weight), I guess he told me the plate size and I was expecting a bigger crab. We also ordered garlic ony choy and lobster fried rice (not picture cuz my hand was too messy eating the crab). I wouldn't say they are exceptional but they are pretty good. Overall it's a good Oc spot but I had better (or wayyyy better) so I know it can be better. I would recommend others to come eat the clams and snails but that's pretty much it. read more

The decor is really nice inside and it's very spacious. There is an additional parking lot north of the restaurant. Service is fast here and you get your food really quick. The pho is pretty good here and it's nice to have a place nearby that serves a good bowl of pho. The portion is huge. The pho bowl is bigger than my head. When you take photos here it looks like you are in Vietnam with all the plants here. My friend and I kept glancing over at other people's table foods and everything on the menu looks so good. The pho was very nice and with the correct spicy condiment, it was perfection. Service was not as good when I arrived. I had 5 employees pass me up although I was waiting at the entrance desk. Finally I stopped someone and asked if I could get a table for 2 and they said yes. We were seated by the nearest table by the door and it was freezing cold as there was a really cold breeze. We asked to be moved so they did, to another empty table (wonder why these two were enpty), again cold. But I'm not one to complain so I just ordered a hot tea. Small outdoor area also. Chairs are very slippery on the floor - like on wheels! Picture-taking: We were there for lunch so it was bright. Beverages: A nice selection of Vietnamese coffee drinks. The Vietnamese salted coffee was cold, sweet, salty, rich and delicious! Menu: Big menu featuring Vietnamese standards and shellfish. Oysters, clams, snails, abalone, scallops, lobster, crab. And there's balut! Food: We went on Labor Day at noon and by the time we were seated at 1-ish, they were out of a number of items but more significantly, they were out of fresh herbs. This negatively affected everything we ate because one of the best things about Vietnamese food is the use of fresh herbs. We had grilled blood clams (tasty), steamed Canadian snails with lemongrass (big!), crispy fried chicken cartilage (too saucy), quail balut (interesting texture and mild flavor despite fear factor vibe). They were out of razor clams. The combination pho was delicious - get the fresh noodles! The rice noodle bowl with grilled pork and fried spring roll was ok but missing herbs. I wanted the bowl with grilled pork and pork patty but they were out. Service: It was busy and the service was inattentive and rushed. The coffee drinks came out particularly slow. Food was delicious. Lots of variety on the menu, my friends who loved seafood and who doesn't eat seafood were able to order something from the menu. Restaurant is nicely decorated with greenery kindalike rainforest, they are quite busy. Free parking in the front and away from the choas of downtown. We were surprised the bill was alot less than usual, which is awesome. read more
