Went for dinner on a Monday night. The restaurant was surprisingly empty, only a few tables occupied. That normally is a red flag for me, but we decided to stay and so glad we did. The evening went off without a hitch, from terrific service, beautiful dining room, great food, wine and cocktails. While the activity level was not high, it did not impact our service in the least, our waiter was on point the entire team, even when we were the last customers in the restaurant. Perhaps it was because it was a Monday, after Gay Pride weekend, and the hullabaloo of World Cup that kept the crowd away, but will definitely be back. read more

Summary: the food is alright, the portions are large, but the hostess I interacted with was not great. I felt unwelcome, which was tough since I came here for dinner before a Broadway show, & was left without many other available options. I arrived 25 minutes late for my reservation, but was told that my only option was to sit at the bar due to their 30 minute grace period being up (which wasn't true). I looked around the restaurant & saw it was only 20% full, but the hostess then said all the open tables are reserved for guests who are arriving soon. Based on what I saw, it was hard to believe her. I checked open table to see if any reservations were available, and sure enough there was one at 6:15pm -- mind you, I arrived at the restaurant at 5:55pm. So I book the 6:15pm table & inform the hostess. I then sat down to wait for 6:15 to come. As I waited, I noticed the hostess asked each incoming guest whether they were attending a Broadway show & what time each show was at so that they could ensure the guests made it out on time. At 6:06, she comes & says she can seat me because another guest cancelled, which again, I found hard to believe. As she leads me to my table, I noticed she didn't ask if there was a show I was attending, nor the show's start time. I stopped & asked if she wanted to know my show time before seating me, & she looked so surprised. The honest truth is that the hostess did not treat me like a customer. Instead, I felt unwelcome & couldn't help but wonder if it was related to me being Black the only Black person in the restaurant. Esthetically it's a very pleasant looking restaurant, spacious with plenty of options where to be seated. The service is very good, and pretty quick, however our reservation was pre after work crowd. As for the food, appetizers of oysters and calamari were good, as were the sorbet and parfait desserts, the main course of hanger steak was not. The dish lacked seasoning and the meat was chewy for both my friend and I. I mentioned that to both the servers and the manager. Also $11.50 for a 16 oz plastic bottle of flat water is a bit ridiculous. read more

Beautiful restaurant, delicious dishes, and attentive staff! I had been to Oceana over 10 years ago and went for a second time recently for a work event. It met everyone's expectations- possibly even exceeded them. The wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly, the food was absolutely delicious (the crab cakes, halibut, and Rocky Road Budino were all amazing). An elegant setting from the moment you walk in. The blue hue pairs with the seafood theme. Solid wine list selection and basic cocktail menu. Great place to come if you love a raw bar. I appreciate a condensed menu with not a ton of options to overwhelm a patron. Food was served hot and quickly after ordering. Great flavor and seasoning. Generous wine pours! A few cons this time. We didn't see our waiter except to order, and then to pay the bill. The sommelier was gracious to get me another glass of wine and the assistant wait staff was more attentive than our waiter. A second con, I ordered the branzino, and while cooked to my liking I was shocked to see it wasn't deboned. First time I had a full fish that wasn't deboned. Very dangerous to serve without the patron knowing that's how it will come. Overall it was a nice dinner before our show. Popped into Oceana after the Gazillion Bubble Show on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised! We came at an off-hour, so the bar was quiet at first (a rare treat in Midtown), but it started to fill up about 90 minutes later. Service was excellent -- attentive without being overbearing. They even brought a cushion for my son to sit on at the bar, which was such a thoughtful touch. We ordered the fried calamari and two dozen oysters, plus they brought out some complimentary focaccia that was warm, soft, and absolutely delicious. The oysters were fresh and briny -- a few had tiny shell chips, but the flavor made up for it. At $4.50 each, they're on the pricier side, but we had Billion Oyster vouchers, so no complaints there. I think this place is fine for a Midtown work lunch. The menu spans all sorts of seafood and does make some creative takes on well known dishes. The dining room is expansive and has plenty of room for large parties. I had the swordfish, which was served on top of a cioppino inspired sauce. I thought it was OK, tasty but lacking a little bit of seasoning. Service was good and prices are what you would expect. I wouldn't say this is a destination restaurant but if you're craving high end seafood in between reviewing spreadsheets, this might scratch the itch. read more

Came here with a friend after shopping near Rockefeller Center. We didn't have reservations and most nearby spots were fully booked, so we were happy to find this place with immediate seating--and to get out of the cold. The restaurant is big and we were seated right away. Many dishes contain garlic and couldn't be customized, which limited my options. The fried calamari was solid. The squid ink pasta had well-cooked scallops, but the pasta itself was rubbery. The lemon tart was fine but not memorable. Overall, a 3/5 for me or maybe 3.5. Nothing bad, but nothing special either. Tourist from CA and we were freezing outside. We came in and were welcomed instantly even though we were so bundled up you could barely see our faces. We found a spot at the bar and greeted right away. We ordered a beer and the bartender (Lisa) was kind enough to order me a cappuccino. I felt bad as I recognize we are taking a spot at the bar, but that's just it, everyone here was so accommodating and welcoming despite being underdressed (jeans, multiple layers, jackets and beanies). Even when I asked to use the restroom an employee me showed me the way. An excellent choice for seafood, although the seating is a bit crowded. Oysters were fresh, but the shucking rated a "B" because of broken shell bits in a couple of them. The halibut was good. This was a pre-Broadway show stop via Open Table reservation. However what normally would be a 45 drive turned intro a 2 hr slog into the city. I called restaurant to ask to hold or move reservation and was told they were completely booked for the night and can only hold reservations for 15 min. Understandable but I noticed they had many open reservations so I simply canceled my original and rebooked. We arrived 45 after to find not only was our new reservation valid but many open tables across the restaurant. So many in fact, we were given a booth normally reserved for four. I don't know if this is an Open Table glitch or what but I worked around. However my first thought was that had I assumed they were fully booked I would have went elsewhere. Seems like an opportunity for Oceana to follow up on. Okay, anyhow on to the good stuff and there was so much of it. Location a half block from Radio City Music Hall, around corner from Times Square and much more. This isn't your cheesy or overpriced Times Square tourist joint. It's a single owner for the past 35 years. But it's modern, great ambiance, fresh food and fabulous wine list. We started with oysters which were fresh and juicy. Moved on to main courses of squid ink and sword fish, and a delicious bottle of Napa wine. The wait staff and sommelier were attentive and mindful of timing for our play. And the placed cleared out about 7:30ish so clearly we weren't the only ones. I would highly recommend. It ain't cheap as we left @ $460 which included tip and a $150 bottle of wine. read more

Wanted to have a lighter dinner instead of the many steakhouses in the area. The restaurant its really large and very nicely done. The service was top notch and they really made us feel special. Had a fantastic work dinner at Oceana last week! Service was top notch - attentive and professional - but did feel like they were rushing us toward the end of our meal. Oceana is a quite large and attractive space but can get loud with what appears to be groups of mostly business dinners. No idea why this place has a rating in the 3s. I guess food portions are small but that is really not the case. Oceana is a true fine dining experience. The food and the service were marvelous. We were greeted by 2 servers who constantly attended our table and never let our glasses of water be empty. The wine sommelier visited us and told us if we need any drinking recommendations he is here to help which was a nice gesture but both me and my guest don't drink. Let's get to the food. That octopus was to die for and the sauce it was on was thick, salty and sweet. Absolutely perfect. The ceviche was fresh with shaved strawberries and pickled green strawberries. I have never tasted such a distinct ceviche before. Summer vibes. The branzino was amazing and the entree portion was huge. All in all I loved date night here. Such a beautiful restaurant and a great time! NYC is like my second home, and I wanted something quick but away for my birthday. In comes Oceana... Reservations were smooth. From the time we entered to the time we left, no details were left unmet. It was so personable, that I thought we were the only people in the building. For my appetizer, I ordered oysters on the half shell (of course!); they were very briny and delicious. Entree - I ordered the Lobster Scampi, which encompasses lobster roe linguini and tarragon oil. Oh my! It was so filling, buttery, and plain good! Thoroughly enjoyed. Because it was my birthday, a complimentary chocolate cake was delivered to the table. In my opinion, "complimentary" desserts are not always the best; however, in this instance, the chocolate cake was so decadent, smooth, and rich. Time and time again, the staff came over to ensure all needs were met. We even chatted about things unrelated to the restaurant and dining experience. As I mentioned at the start of this review, NYC is like home to me. So, Oceana will see me again when I return. Do yourself a favor and take yourself, your girlfriends or your boo here. A big group of us from work came here for dinner. I was excited that this is a seafood restaurant with good rating. I am not sure if it's the food we ordered as a few others really liked their food and about half of us didn't. I ordered the grilled octopus and the branzino. I had these two dishes many times in different restaurants. It's sad to say both dishes are the worst that I have ever eaten. The octopus has no taste. It didn't feel like it was seasoned. The octopus sat on humus?? It just didn't go together. The green sauce the branzino sits on, again just didn't go well together. We also had the fried calamari, which was good. My deboned, grilled while bronzino was awesome - how they kept all the meat and skin together while taking nearly all the bones out was impressive. What a disappointment. Went there last night as a 4 top joining another couple. It was NYC Restaurant Week offering which others at my table participated. Friend ordered the strip steak, another ordered the chicken, and the other ordered the pasta offerings from the restaurant week prefix menu. I opted for their $65 filet mignon as a la carte. The strip steak was so tough my friend could not cut through the meat. He thought it was the knife and asked for a different utensil but it was basically a weather mat in your car. My wife's chicken was also dry and looked so unappealing. Pasta was just too spicy and dry without any sign of silkiness in the sauce. My filet came with black truffle shavings which were just mashed into some black paste and the potato accompanied had no sauce whatsoever. Service was horrendous as our server never checked on us and could not be found when we needed him. We had to flag down busboy and manager that were walking by every time we needed something. The bill came out to be over $600. Not worth it for the garbage food and level of service that is below that of a Waffle House. I literally can cook better food for 1/5 of the price but had to endure this travesty since the dinner was for a friend's bday. They need to change the kitchen quality and properly train servers. read more

Had the opportunity to try Oceana, and decided to go with the Filet Mignon for my entree. It was a perfectly cooked medium rare, however I thought it could have been more flavorful or better seasoned. The potato rosti was nice and crunchy, adding a bit of texture to the dish. For dessert, the panna cotta was quite tasty and soft. Service was very attentive and the ambiance was quite upscale and modern. Came for a late lunch with a former business associate. Upon arrival, it was fairly crowded, but the crowd subsided by the time we were done. The layout was very nice of the restaurant and perfect for a lunch, business meeting or a dinner. I intended to go with the Salmon before I arrived, but then I noticed the three course lunch would suffice. I went with the Steak Frittes ($8 upcharge) with creamed spinach. The other two courses were a salad and a dessert. The Caesar salad was standard, the sorbet was great.
