This is an average-quality American Chinese restaurant. I've ordered a couple of dishes with tofu. The tofu was fried but it had a doughy consistency, not completely unpleasant, just different. The sauce on my Pad Thai was too sweet but it wasn't gloppy. The Fried Tofu Stir Fried with Mixed Vegetables sauce was calming. My wife's hot and sour soup had a little bite and neither the best nor the worst that she's had. read more

I was craving Woo Dip Harr and this is one of the few restaurants in the area to have it. I thought it was very good. My only disappointment was the shrimp were breaded. I usually have this dish with the breading. Next time I would see if they can do that. Nice generous portion. Egg roll and won ton were good too. read more

We were lucky enough to have my sister and brother-in-law provide us with this Christmas Day carryout. Not many places were open so they it was slim Pickens and this was just fine. We got our usual General Tso's, Sweet & Sour chicken, Pepper Steak, Vegetable Lo Mein and a couple spring rolls and crab Rangoon. Everything was decent. Nothing really stood out, good or bad. First time ordering and I am shocked. It's really good. I ordered the Hunan Chicken combo and everything was so fresh!

I had an urge for some fried rice. They were open and the closet. Good thing because the shrimp fried rice was great. So many times, we have had fried rice where rice was still white and light covered. Not this time. It was the best shrimp fried rice we had for a long time. Even my kid actually admitted it was good. After moving here from NY, my husband and I were missing good Chinese food. The Birmingham area really lacks in this, and we were pumped when we found Ho Wah delivers to our home. Their food is absolutely fantastic, and I was blown away by their extensive menu. Their sweet and sour chicken is my favorite, and they even put the sauce on the side so your chicken stays crispy! Last night I called to place a carry out around 9:45-9:48. The phone rang for what seemed like a 100 years, and when they answered they said that the cook had left. The cook has left? This is an issue of contention with me. If you say you are open until 10, that means you should be PREPARED FOR BUSINESS until at least 10, if not 10-15 minutes after that. It seems that many restaurants (and retail stores as well) ate following this model. You may have been able to do this 10 years ago or more, but with modern technology being what it is, helping people to find your store and telling them how late you are open, you should be sure to accommodate the hours that YOU advertise. Again, while I love their food, manners and service mean a lot to me, and with all the competition around these days, a smart business owner will teach their employees to use their head. That's ok though, Mon Jin Lau received my near $75 order. read more

This is pretty much your standard Chinese place. About $8 for a combo, which gives you tons of meat and rice and an egg roll. The sesame chicken was super bland, which is even weirder considering it had the little symbol next to it on the menu to indicate that it's spicy. It was the opposite of spicy, and didn't really taste like anything. The crab rangoon was good. Their sweet and sour sauce is bright yellow, which is kind of weird, but tastes pretty normal. Summary: If you're looking for lots of Chinese food but don't really care what it tastes like, this is the place for you. If you're looking for flavor, go elsewhere. read more

Ho Wah is right down the street, so we decided to give it a try since it was snowing out and we wanted some comfort food. We were actually surprised by the decor of the restaurant; it was decorated in traditional Chinese lanterns, a huge framed bronze casting picture of a Chinese village and bamboo wallpaper. My description might sound cheap and cheesy, but this was the real deal. It was a very intimate setting. There were a lot of options on the menu and the prices were very reasonable. Each entree was around $10-$11 and that included an egg roll, choice of soap and tea. The portions were also huge and we had plenty of leftovers. They also served us Hawaiian bread. I ordered the chicken and broccoli and my boyfriend ordered tofu lo mein. Both entrees came out in these cute tower dishes with covers to keep the food warm. Everything was delicious. Best Chinese around. They're always so friendly and patient when I ask questions about the menu. They have the best hot and sour soup I've had in a really long time. I like the lo mein with brown sauce, and the Pad Thai. I love the sweet and sour shrimp too, and especially love that when I ordered it to go they put the tub of sauce on the side so my meal didn't get soggy. Just last Friday, headed over to Kim's Family Restaurant, only to find it is closed permanently. It's an easy drive from work for lunch on Fridays, so needless to say was very disappointed. Got side-tracked trying to drive back, due to all of the local road construction, but it worked out very well indeed, as I was fortunate enough to be able to spot Ho Wah from the road and made a u-turn to get back there, having recalled reading about it here on Yelp. Was not able to get a clear understanding of the lunch menu, before, but that was not a problem as they are very reasonably priced and the food and service were both GREAT!!! A very pleasant young lady seated me right away and I was so pleased to see their lunch menu with good prices and the sorts of things I wanted :-D Had to get my all-time favorite, Almond Chicken, as I am born and raised in Detroit (a long, long, long time ago) ;-) (ABC is a Michigan thing, especially the Motor City) Folks are right; the portions are very generous. The egg drop soup really hit the spot and the ABC was just how I like it. First time at this restaurant and the last time. We ordered Chow Mein, Won Ton Soup and Two eggs. However, I was extremely disappointed when I opened up the carton and viewed tons of bean sprouts and little pieces of chicken. Anyone familiar with Chow Mein is well aware that it's a noodle dish. Chow mein are Chinese stir-fried noodles with vegetables and sometimes meat or tofu. Chop suey consists of meat and eggs, cooked quickly with vegetables such as bean sprouts, cabbage, and celery and bound in a starch-thickened sauce. Noticed the difference? When we called to c/o receiving the wrong meal. We were told, "That is Chow Mein. Didn't you received the crispy dry noodles?" Once again, we explained this is not Chow Mein. However, instead of arguing we simply decided to never, ever patronize this restaurant again. Just because you toss in a bad of fried dried noodles, does NOT make it Chow Mein. The Won Ton Soup - full of bean sprouts. The egg rolls tasted like they were purchased from a store, frozen and then reheated. This is the worst Chinese restaurant. I call Bait & Switch. The food is really good. Usually pretty prompt for carry out. I've gone there for a long time but will not any longer. Last time in I had a rather large order for the family. The woman who was at the counter (who has never been Ms Congeniality to start with) tells me the total but doesn't bother to review the order at all. I laughed a bit and asked if everything was there. She gave me a really dirty look, huffed at me and turned back to the register. For some reason I actually APOLOGIZED and told her we had a lot of food and wanted to make sure everything was covered. She again huffed at me and acted like I was a total ass for asking. My business is going down the road to her competitor. I wasn't out of line for asking her to at least verify the order was all there. Coming from California it is hard to get Cantonese food. Each visit back home it's high on my craving list. I used to go to Kim's but it closed. So this was nearby and I figured give it a try. Food was actually pretty darn good. I loved the egg drop soup and little fried wontons on top. Egg foo young was tasty also. Service is fast. Maybe too fast.
