Was not too impressed with this place. I am a huge fan of Octopus and was a little disappointed with this appetizer. Portion was small $24 and octopus was disguised in peppers and onions. Taste was good but I have had many better octopus dishes that were more tender, the reviews made me feel that I would be blown away. Coconut shrimp were very good $18 for 4 nice size tender shrimp. All entree's were pretty good. Sauce in seafood pasta $37 was tasty. Lamb chops were big as well as the price was at $44 and very good. Pork tenderloin was a wee dry $30. Bottom line here is when you spend $350 for dinner for 2 couples you should be very impressed and dying to return. This Foodie was NOT and will not be back. Too many great restaurant options in this price range. If you seek a noisy place with romantic ambiance and very expensive slightly above average dining, then you may be happy here. Where do I begin? The food A+, The service A+, The atmosphere(indoors or outside) A+. This is a gem of a restaurant, and you will not be disappointed. The family who runs and owns Oceanos are the sweetest most professional people, and they take great pride in serving fresh and delicious food. Pete (the owner) bakes his bread fresh TWICE a day, its amazing. The only problem with this restaurant is that the bread is so fantastic ,( not to mention the olive oil to dip the bread in, is from their own personal olives grown in their village in Greece).you wind up eating so much that you get full before your meal comes. I had dinner here last night. The dinning room was attractive and the restaurant appeared to be well maintained. I had the tuna tartare which was probably the best I've had in NJ. The shrimp scampi was a generous portion but slightly over cooked. Both were beautifully presented. I feel the prices were a little high for what is was. But the main area of disappointment was our waiter. He was gruff, unpleasant and had really bad body odor. I had to turn away each time he reached into the table to serve something. By the end of the main course I needed to leave before getting sick. We went here Sunday evening. My first outdoor dining since the beginning of pandemic. I would say this the best oyster place I have ever been. They are fresh and excellent in quality. Calamari was good and the dipping sauce is one of the best I have tasted. I ordered Steamed Lobster with stuffing. I was hesitating to add the crabmeat stuffing because in other places, it was disgusting so I gave it a shot. Guess what? Never regretted a single moment, stuffing was very tasty, and flavorful. The staff is also nice and helpful. Despite the place being crowded, our appetizers arrived in no time without disregarding the quality. Pricey? Yes but the quality is superb. You'd feel bad not to finish everything since it is excellent. It's been a few years since my last visit during Valentines Day. From what I can recall, the service was extremely top notched. We were well greeted, our coats were taking away for us. The waiter, was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Now, in terms of the food...we were blown away by how great it was. I can't recall what we ordered but we were wowed away. My husband and I have been going there for years. We have not been since the pandemic and decided to treat ourselves to dinner there the other night. When I looked at the menu I was flabbergasted to see how much the prices had gone up, so I thought I was ordering accordingly -- we were too embarrassed to walk out at that point. Our dinner consisted of one appetizer, which we shared.....I had lobster and my husband had a salad with four shrimp on it, and we had two drinks. The bill came to $250, without gratuity. Is the food good? Yes. If you are a wealthy person, go for it. It's obvious this restaurant, like so many other businesses, is not interested in serving the middle class. Particularly considering the pandemic, for prices to have gone up like this is a sad testament to what communities do for each other. After all these years, we will never set foot in there again. And, by the way, we were charged for a full shrimp dinner for the four shrimp that were put on Charlie's salad, as if they weren't already compensated enough. Shameful. They used to own Mykonos in Elmwood Park, and sold it. Food is still great, and prices far more reasonable. I highly recommend it. read more

Oceanos was so good I almost forgot my shellfish allergy and dived into the coconut shrimp! My company recently hosted a small event here for clients, and I thank the Oceanos staff for making it so phenomenal. Service: unbeatable. Above all, the service was flawless, polished, professional, attentive and sweet. As an example, during the cocktail hour, they not only passed hors d'oeuvres, but they also came around with empty trays to collect the napkins and toothpicks that people generally wind up holding in perpetuity. We were not made to interrupt conversations and make our way to the bar for refills, but servers noticed when drinks were getting low and came by to replenish them. Napkins were refolded when people left their seats during dinner. Water glasses were constantly filled. When leaving, they helped ladies with their coats, rather than just handing them to us. This is a restaurant that takes pride in its service and hires only the best to carry out that service. The atmosphere matches the service: classy, clean and simple but still comfortable. Food: wonderful. Passed Hors D'oevres - O.M.G. So delicious. They had interesting combos with Greek flares, like a feta/caviar/pita one, and keftedes with tzatziki. The spanakopita though was easily the best I've ever tasted... it will be the stuff of future cravings. Appetizers - really really good. We had a family-style Mediterranean spreads that came with pita (i LOVED the eggplant dip), calamari and coconut shrimp. They were all huge hits. The bread on the table was only okay, and there were olives and olive oil placed on the tables as well. My allergies prevented me from trying them, but people said that the shrimp and calamari were the best they'd ever eaten. Salad - I wasn't crazy about the tri-color salad since it was too bitter, but that was my personal taste. The goat cheese on top was creamy and divine. Entrees - I had the filet mignon - which was Fred Flintstone sized. Seriously, the portions were at least 20 oz. each... and cooked to perfection! The veggies that came with it were terrific as well, although I wasn't thrilled with the roasted half potato. I heard from others that they loved their chicken, salmon and shrimp dishes as well. Desserts - Fred Flintstone again! They were all amazing - I had the galaktaburiko, which was terrific: sweet, sinful and unique. Great venue in general. Lets start from the outside in. First off big sign on the main road so you wont miss it when driving up. Parking lot is accommodating for all and is close to entry way. Hosts are quick to greet and take your coat and seat you. Make reservations if you are looking to go at a busy time period, such as after work or for the dinner rush. Atmosphere is inviting and the staff is friendly. I would put on a sports coat for this place. Though I do believe it is casual dining it is nice enough to warrant a sports coat, IMO. Tables are spacious, booths for two have ample space there are rooms in the back for private dining or corporate events. The bar is nicely done and the bartenders are great. The waiters are well versed in their menu and options. There is a sommelier on staff to help with the wine selection. Decor is neutral but appeasing to the eye. Now the good stuff.......Appetizers: I had the grilled octopus, which was phenomenal!! Also had the 5 dip spread, which consisted of hummus, tomatosalita, feta spread and babganoosh, also delicious. Also had the fried calamari with the chili sauce. The chili sauce made it juts a bit better than anywhere else. Entrees....I had the Patagonian Toothfish AKA the Chilean Sea Bass. It came with asparagus and a rice pilaf. All I can say is AMAZEBALLS!!! Also at the table the Swordfish was had and raved about. As well as the mini scallops and the Bay Scallops both of which were great. Desert and coffee was fun unless you are a lefty, which means the coffee mug is awkward for you. LOL! It was a topic of conversation at the table and funny to see everyone try to hold their coffee with their left hands and see just how awkward it is. Though they are some of the coolest mugs I have ever seen. The plating was done well and the service was top notch. The food is just delicious I cant say that enough. We arrived for our 8:30 pm Saturday night dinner reservation at this highly rated Bergen County restaurant on time. We were greeted by the valet who was eating Wendy's at a little bistro table. We should have taken that as our first sign. When we stepped inside the restaurant, the tiny reception area was so packed with people waiting that we could barely reach the scowling hostess. She checked us in and took our coats and told us it would be a few minutes. After 20 minutes of waiting in the cramped area, barely able to hear our conversation because of dining room noise and pressed against other waiting diners and the silly folding divider that separated the reception area from the dining room, we were finally seated. That should have been our second sign. We were still optimistic. Silly us. We were seated at a table for two in a small compartment in the back off of the main dining area. Thank God, because the main dining room is so loud you can barely hear yourself think. We were presented with menus and quickly told the specials. We were excited because we saw many things we would love to try. Within a few moments we narrowed it down to three appetizers and 2 entrees. We ordered a bottle of wine and our dinner and settled in for all the greatness we thought was to come. By now the waiter must realize that though we are young, we are not amateurs with a cheap check. But that is how he treated us. His attitude made us uncomfortable and bordered on disrespectful at times. We were never anything but polite and smiling, always saying please and thank you. So then our appetizers arrived. ALL AT ONCE! I'm sorry, but this is supposed to be a fine dining restaurant, isn't it? Typically, the waiter would stagger the appetizer order so that the diners aren't met with them all at once and left with cold food. Not only that but the table was small. Where were you going to put all of that food, snooty waiter man? We were dumbfounded and just sort of moved things around on the table ourselves to make it fit. The waiter didn't even remove the empty bread basket to make room for us. He literally just plopped down $55.00 worth of food and left it to get cold. This is also about the time that he stopped refilling our glasses. So...the food you say? The special grilled octopus with balsamic? Overcooked with that lovely hint of burned edge. Nice and bitter $25.00 rubber. YUCK! The Calamari? Average. Nothing great, nothing bad. The Oysters Rockefeller? They would have been good if you weren't ice cold. The waiter never asked how our appetizers were. On to dinner. I had two of the most measly, fatty lamb chops I have ever been served. Sure, I could say the meat was cooked properly, tasted pretty good, and the accompanying rosemary shiraz demi glace sauce was great...that is if I had more than four bites worth of meat to try. Literally, two bites of meat came off of each chop. Literally. I wish I took a picture. The boyfriend had the "Chilean Sea Bass." Why the quotes you ask? Because whatever fish that was...it was not Chilean Sea Bass. It looked sort of like it. But it was some under cooked, slimy, fishy, and straight up inedible substitute. The best thing on the plate? The mass produced house vegetable medley. As previously mentioned, the waiter was nowhere to be found. The bus person cleared the table and no one noted that most of boyfriend's food was not eaten. Ten minutes or so later, the waiter reappeared with dessert menus and handed them to us without saying a word and walked away. We were annoyed at this point but I was still hungry. That fish turned boyfriends stomach...more on that later. Out of hunger I ordered some baklava...it was ok. I think it was about $12.00. I could be wrong, I didn't save the receipt. It was not worth how ever much it was. Kings supermarket baklava is better. We were handed our check and I paid it as quickly as I could to get out of there. So why isn't this review over right there? Because boyfriend got sick on the way home. I should note that he had no wine...only water. What made him sick? That gross fish! Is this the average dining experience at Oceanos? Probably not. But our experience literally turned our stomachs. We eat out frequently and will never give this place another shot. When looking to satiate our craving for Mediterranean, will give our patronage to Varka in Ramsey or Axia in Tenafly. read more

I have been hearing for ages that Oceanos was one of THE places to go for outstanding seafood in the Bergen County area, and so finally the Southern husband and I went last night. And yes, there is a lot that is great about this place...starting with some of the seafood, which was in fact fabulous. I had a grilled yellowfin tuna with a soba noodle vegetable side, and the tuna was just plain perfect. So tender that you didn't need to even look at your knife in order to cut it, and it came with a delicious yogurt sauce that was the perfect complement. Heaven. The Southern husband had the dayboat scallops with spinach, and he was delighted with them. For starters we had the oysters rockfeller (very nice) and the coconut shrimp (perfectly fine, but pretty much like coconut shrimp you can get most places. Nice chili sauce on the side.) We ended by sharing the world's biggest piece of baklava, which was also very nice...not worlds better than other baklava I've had, but tasty. The service was top-notch, and they had a very nice wine list...I had a glass of malbec that was lovely and smooth. Okay, i had two. So why only three stars for this place that is swimming in 4 and 5 stars here on Yelp? A few things. First of all, the menu is priced like you are at an event restaurant. We are talking $15-20 appetizers and $25-35 dollar entrees. I could have been okay with the $31 for my out-of-this-world tuna, but $15 for three coconut shrimp? C'mon, guys. The atmosphere was perfectly nice, but if I am going to pay $150 for dinner for two, I want to feel like I am at knock-your-socks-off gorgeous restaurant, and while it was perfectly nice, it was an ordinary kind of perfectly nice. The menu was laminated plastic, the lighting was dim battery-operated fixtures on the table (so dim that it was a struggle to read the menu)...not quite what you expect when you are paying these kind of prices. The portions were HUGE, which I know some might see as a plus, but I find overwhelming and unnecessary. All of this made tipping the (mandatory) valet parking guys at the end of the night just a little aggravating. Not that I blame the valet parking guys. So, while I agree with everyone who says that there is some outstanding seafood to be had here, it's not consistent, and it's pretty over-priced when you consider the entire experience. So my girlfriend and I decide on date night once a week between our conflicting schedules, she works a 9-5 and I work nights several nights a week weekend, so the days we can we love to enjoy ourselves. We chose Oceano's as its only a 8 minute drive from my house. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by Rahmi, the exuberant manager who allowed us to chose our seats based on our liking and from the moment we sat we were treated to an amazing dining experience. Our server Blanka was very attentive and courteous. Wasn't overbearing or lingering too much to make it uncomfortable, but as she could see when we put out menus down and gave us a minute to converse she walked right over and took our order. (Our appetizers) The calamari was excellent with the Thai chili sauce, which is cooked with over 31 ingredients; Thai chili sauce is one of my favorite sauces, and this by far was the best I've ever tried. The Med Spreads with deliciously cooked pita was paired with 4 different spreads conveniently arraigned on our plate with their own spoons not to mix the flavors of each (Cheese spread, eggplant spread, taramasalata, the classic hummus) all decorated wonderfully. Our wines were excellent, full bodied and paired well with our meals per Blankas request on what to get with our main courses. The food arrived within good time after telling Blanka our appetizers were finished. We ordered the filet and the Halibut special (which that night came with lobster tail) and it was decorated as great as it tasted. Normally I would with two appetizers, a hearty perfectly cooked steak with veggies, and a Halibut special with lobster tail, loathe the thought of stuffing our stomaches more with desert, but seeing that we enjoyed our meal and experience so much already, we decided to order the Tiramisu which was absolutely delicious and the Baklava which came beautifully decorated as well and served with a scoop of ice cream, fresh strawberries and powdered sugar with a simple syrup glaze; might I add these deserts are made fresh by the owner Peter every night himself to ensure freshness and quality. We weren't rushed out of the door and actually took our time leaving and felt no rush either by staff or Rahmi to leave the restaurant. He and the owners son Niko came over to chat with us and make sure everything was as we expected; they even offered that if something wasn't prepared satisfactory or didn't meet our expectations to have it sent back to the kitchen immediately to be corrected or re-prepared without any increase in the bill (which there was absolutely no need). Overall I loved this place, and will definitely be a regular here.... when my wallet can afford it for those date nights we wish to really sit back and enjoy an amazing meal in an atmosphere where we felt so welcome and so looked after. Kudo's once again to Blanka, Rahmi, Niko, and the chefs for their tremendous service. 5 out of 5 stars and definitely be will recommend to family and friends. You've found yourself some new regulars, as I've heard they have so many already who enjoy the same experienced we have; I even suggested to my father we as a family go out there for some fine dining so they can experience the food as well (his favorites are the day boat scallops), and I overheard the table next to us gasping in amazement at how good they were! I am a huge fan of Mediterranean and Greek cuisine, and Oceanos has become my go-to favorite for any, if not every, special occassion (and the occassional splurge). If you're looking for a perfect evening of ambience, service and quality then I suggest you book yourself a reservation right this very moment. I remember the first night I ever dined here- it was a Saturday evening and every table was taken, even the bar was elbow-to-elbow with patrons. The atmosphere was buzzing with electricity and the aroma of fresh seafood wafted through the air. Large windows embraced the dining room giving it a larger feel while ivory table linens stood in stark contrast to the dark wood of the chairs and floorboards, and splashes of blue hinted island colors on the booths' upholstery. But despite the interiors the ambience always manages to remain unpretentious and laid-back; and when the weather is warm it always makes sense to take advantage of their al-fresco seating. And from the time one walks in to the time the bill is paid, service is nothing less than impeccable. The hosts are professional yet extremely personable, the waitstaff are knowledgable and friendly, and runners are regularly making passes at your table to keep it clean and ensure you have everything you need. One recurring fact I've been reading in other negative restaurant reviews is that some customers feel rushed to leave, worse, some are actually asked to leave after the bill is paid to facilitate turn-over. That first night I was at Oceanos we'd already paid the bill and were just enjoying conversation while I nursed my wine when we noticed a waiting line. Feeling guilty I caught the owner's attention as he passed and offered to move to the bar in order to clear the table for the waiting patrons. Though he insisted I take my time I persisted, and after thanking me he led us to the bar where, calling over the bartender, served us each a shot of Ouzo before telling her to give us a round of whatever we wanted on the house. All because I offered to move. Now for the food. For starters they bake their own amazing bread daily, and it becomes hard to remember not to fill up on that alone, dipped in quality olive oil and served with a side of olives. But since I did just that on another night when I brought my best friend here we went straight to the main course. A little background info: Fred is anti-seafood, and not at all the adventurous eater. Up to that night he'd never touched seafood before (maybe a bite here and there, but never took to any of it), therefore settled on the Boneless Pork Tenderloin while I opted for the Chilean Sea Bass. Fred does trust me though, so after that first bite of sinful fish ("sinful" doesn't do it justice, nor does even calling it "fish" at this point, believe me) simply melted in my mouth I begged him to try one taste. The mark of a truly excellent seafood restaurant then? That night was the first time in our entire friendship that Fred, pausing after tasting the Sea Bass, whimpered a barely audible, "sorry"... then switched our plates with ninja-like speed. Inasmuch as I would have liked to have savored my own dish I was pleasantly surprised that he enjoyed it so much he cleaned the plate (he doesn't eat vegetables either but ate all the asparagus); and I can't say that I was at all disappointed with the Pork Tenderloin (amazing choice of pairing with the sweetness of apricots). Since then I've been back several times and have yet to be disappointed by anything I've ordered- Sesame Salmon (with raspberry beurre blanc, and cooked perfectly!), Day Boat Scallops, Yellowfin Tuna (adore the Asian palate of ginger and soy); the Grilled Octopus and Zuchinni& Eggplant Chips for appetizers; Swordfish Kebab and Crab Cake Sandwich (with aioli on a brioche bun... sigh.) for lunch. And let's not forget their raw bar! I do love my oysters, and Oceanos most definitely delivers when it comes to freshness. As I mentioned earlier they also have a full bar, so regardless of where seated or what is being ordered one should also take note- and advantage- of their ridiculously extensive list of wines and cocktails. There's a slew of Martinis and Flute concoctions, champagnes, and wines meticulously chosen from all over the world (priced between $25-$390/bottle). And, yes, please make it a point to try a glass of Greek vino when you have the chance. Fred and I have dined in other establishments where he continues to remain true to his meat& potatoes or chicken& pasta choices... I guess some things will simply never change, his sticking to everything safe and familiar on a plate being one of those things. But it's nice to know that other things have joined his list of culinary familiarity: every time we find ourselves back in Oceanos the entire waitstaff already knows to have the kitchen ready to fire-up two orders of Chilean Sea Bass... after we're done attacking the bread. read more

In COMPLETE agreement with Owen M. -- one of the absolutely BEST seafood in North Jersey (possibly in ALL of NJ) that I've ever had. This was my first time dining here with my girlfriend (who lives in nearby Ridgewood), and we'd actually chosen this place because she'd always HEARD good things about it, and I'd seen great review on it from Yelp. The ambiance and setting is easily a 5/5. Formal-casual attire, dimly lit, and seats/booths are beautiful with a candle at each. We went there for a 6:00 dinner. VALET IS REQUIRED, but I didn't expect anything else after going inside. And now to the main part of the review: The Food. 6/5. We split an appetizer of GRILLED CALIMARI (NOT fried) with seasoning and coated in a white vinaigrette sauce. It was absolutely delicious -- hot, cooked just right for Calimari, and presented beautifully. For the entrees, my girlfriend got the Swordfish with a vegetable medley, while I ordered the Stuffed Shrimp with a lemon-dressing sauce. Both were OUT OF THIS WORLD -- the chef here did an absolutely phenomenal job with the meals, appetizer and entree. The staff was terrific -- very knowledgeable and proficient with giving us our food. The bread was also great and served with olives and an oil dipping sauce. Although Oceano's is expensive ($30/entree), it is EXTREMELY well-worth it. If you're into seafood, you NEED to go here! read more

I had the pleasure of eating here last night and the experience was great! I moved close by and was looking for a place I can visit once or twice a month. My visit wasn't planned and I didn't make reservations so my partner and I sat at the bar. I believe the person who took care of us was Maritza. Maritza was amazing!!!!!!! She was very friendly, knowledgeable about the drinks and food. She made sure our experience there was one to remember. Her drinks we're perfect and her personality was everything. Two weeks ago, our family ate at Oceanos in Fair Lawn, and quite frankly it was one of the best restaurant experiences i've ever had. Whatever the complaints i've read about this place, they have since been corrected in spades. The service was excellent, the servers were as polite and friendly as could be; the waitress had a good sense of humor and didn't flinch when i asked if the baklava was Greek or Turkish. The Oysters Rockefeller were good, although not great; next time i'll have the raw oysters, but Coconut Shrimp, on the other hand were just wonderful - - - delicious, fresh, very satisfying and flavorful. And the Calamari were terrific also - - - tender and tasty, a wonderful dish. Our main courses were as good as i think seafood can get. Scallops broiled were the best we have had in living memory, indescribably succulent and lovely. Even the steak was properly cooked, as ordered, and was delicious. I was afraid for a moment that i was going to overdose on the dessert, so terrific and unforgettably delectable was the apple strudel I had. Came back to this place after 2 years and i was once again very pleased with dinner. We did not have reservations, and while the place was packed, we were still seated right away by the hostess. We got a bunch of stuff to share. We started with the Oceanos sampler. It brings 4 clams, 4 oysters, 4 jumbo shrimp, and a half lobster. I think i would've been fine having one of these for just me! Every single thing on the dish was incredibly fresh. We also had the crab meat cocktail. Delicious and equally fresh. Next were the oysters rockefeller and the octopus salad. I think i realized i am not the biggest fan of oysters rockefeller, as no matter where i go it is never up to par with the rest of the meal. That being said, they were still good quality oysters. My girlfriend's favorite dish was the octopus. I am an oyster guy, but the octopus was giving them a run for their money. It was delicious. Grilled perfectly with just the right amount of crispy char on the outside and not the least bit rubbery. It is up there with some of the best octopus i have had. Oh yea, we had a salad too. lol. I am so happy that 2 years after my initial visit this place managed to impress me. Even more so than the first time. Great place for fresh, deliciously prepared seafood. I doubt it will be a whole 2 years before i am back at Oceanos. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation (like now.) ENJOY!! read more

In a land of stripmalls and chain restaurants, there is this little gem of a place capable of restoring one's faith in innovative, excellent food and equally excellent service. My parents and I came to this seafood bistro (with a strong Greek inflection) last night for dinner after I voted down my dad's bid for Charlie Brown's Steakhouse with its comparatively horrendous reviews. My parents, being the smarty pants that they are, never question my restaurant selecting skills, and I'm happy to say that our experience at Oceanos will not alter said tendency. After making a reservation on OpenTable a whole five minutes before our arrival, we showed up and were pleasantly greeted and taken to be seated. At this point, my parents spotted the picturesque outdoor patio seating area and asked if we might be seated there instead, and so it was. (Luckily we were dinnering on the earlier side, because the place really got packed by 8 PM--reservations recommended, especially for Saturday evenings!) We ordered wine and spent a long while trying to decide on our food orders--I wanted to order one of everything (Chilean Sea Bass, Stuffed Shrimp, Alaskan Crab Legs, Ribeye Steak, Shrimp and Scallops Kebab,....), basically, and was also faced with the odd reality of most of "everything" being gluten-free-friendly. I ended up forgoing the oyster sampler (one each of the five varieties--four from New York and one from Maine--that they had) in favor of the Greek Salad, followed by the Salmon Steak with olive oil, roasted lemon potatoes, and string beans. The Greek Salad came with a delightfully huge block of feta and the salmon entree was fresh and terrific. (And who doesn't love olive oil?!) I mentioned to the waitress that I can't do gluten, and she made sure all my food was safe. (A woman at a neighboring table was also gluten-free, and seemed like a regular at this restaurant.) If I end up in the Fair Lawn realm again, Oceanos definitely tops my list of places to revisit, and if you're looking for a restaurant appropriate for a special occasion dinner or romantic date, definitely check this place out (especially if the weather is patio-appropriate). read more

My husband and I ate here for the 1st time yesterday and were not disappointed! We started off with some oysters and shrimp cocktail. Very good! The shrimp were ginormous. Oysters were perfect! I had the seared yellowfin tuna rare and it was amazing! Cooked absolutely perfect. My husband had the halibut and lobster tail special which he loved. Service was spot on. I loved the fact that we didn't feel rushed at all. I will say it is on the pricier side, but well worth every penny spent. We will definitely return and reccommend to friends and family. read more
