Friendly, attentive, and checked on us regularly. Now for the best part. The sorbet mimosas. We ordered two, one with mango sorbet and one with lemon and raspberry sorbet, and they were incredible. If you come here, these are an absolute must order. We started with the fried green tomatoes. They were good, but they were clearly made from frozen slices rather than fresh-cut tomatoes. I ordered the salmon cakes with eggs and a pancake. Everything was delicious. No complaints at all. The food easily earns 5 stars. The decor has a classic old-school diner vibe with black and white checkered floors and chrome accents, which I really liked. My only real complaint was the bar seating. If you're on the shorter side, the stools are not very comfortable. The seats are not very deep, there is no foot rail to rest your feet on, and since the stools are bolted to the floor, you cannot scoot in to get comfortable. The backs of my legs started going numb, so we moved to a table as soon as one opened up. Ironically, it was the table directly in front of that hot window. Overall, I'd definitely come back. Great food, excellent service, and those sorbet mimosas alone are worth the visit. Just be strategic about where you sit if you're visiting on a warm, sunny day.

Out of 90+ comments, No Frill Bar and Grill was mentioned the most - six times! So when I finally had a day off and some other business to tend to in Norfolk, it was the perfect excuse to finally try them. No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

Beth and her crew (dressed in appropriate costume) pulled off another fun evening with a German inspired prix fixe menu that was totally on point! Our German wine and beer on tap was accompanied by a plentiful starter of charcuterie. Then a choice of baked cod in a creamy lemon dill sauce (OMG it was rich and delicious), German Schnitzel (hubby ate every bit), beef rouladen, or wine braised chicken with grapes. I wish I could have tried them all! Accompanying sides were perfect! And the desserts... as usual, Beth ended our meal with some killer ones... bee sting cake, Black Forest brownie, and 2 more I couldn't pronounce. She could tell I was shocked and got huffy-puffy with me and said, "What, you don't want your tea now?" and I told her I did, but I never opened the honey because I was catching on to what she was doing. I eventually told her to take the honey jar back, and I would use sugar instead. When we asked her for boxes, she brought them to us and just stood there, interrupting our conversation, forcing us to check out right then and there! It was super uncomfortable... I was feeling suspicious of her, so I asked to see my receipt because she obviously wasn't planning on giving me one. She wanted me to pay directly on her toast tablet and do it immediately because she was just awkwardly standing there! And as I asked for a receipt, we told her we wanted to split the pancake we shared because we were paying separately. She became noticeably agitated and said she wouldn't be able to print my receipt then.. which didn't make any sense at all. My friend and I both used those toast tablets at prior serving jobs, we knew she was being fishy. We told her just don't split it then, bring us receipts. She brought them with an attitude and bad energy and walked away. I was charged for the salsa and sour cream she OFFERED me without letting me know they were an upcharge! My home fries came out burnt, and the burrito had absolutely no flavor. I didn't even use the sour cream; I was debating asking for a manager and getting it off my bill... but my friend and I figured if she has been here this long with that kind of service, management obviously doesn't care and is in on the scheming behavior too. I DID NOT tip her, because she was being deceptive the entire time. I did not ASK for sour cream and salsa; she offered it to me and never let me know it was an upcharge. Her attitude is also a big factor in why she did not get a tip from me, and I'm usually a 20 percent or more tipper. She also quickly turned it away from me when I was signing the tablet and mumbled something again, then went over to another waitress, and i could visibly see her talking crap about me. I tried to call and talk to a manager, but you can't call to talk to anyone; they don't even have a welcoming voicemail! I will NEVER EVERRRRRRRRR go back to this place, and I will tell everyone I know about the experience too. Stay away from this soul-sucking place!

So I had the sausage gravy special. It was great! Their sausage gravy is one of the best I've had. I will return if I get back here.
