3.5 We went on a Saturday around 1:30. I think there were four other occupied tables. Chips, salsa, and bean dip were brought promptly. Those were good-I think the same salsa as when it was Del Mar. We ended up ordering things we'd had before the name change: shrimp tacos and the surf & turf burrito. Both were as good and maybe a little better than before, however I'd forgotten how much batter is on the shrimp and it makes the tacos impossible to pick up. I ended up removing the batter and eating the tacos with utensils. The slaw was tasty, and the beans and rice were OK. My husband loved his burrito. While the items we got were essentially the same as from Del Mar, they were pricier than before, Our server was attentive, but the food took a long time to come out. I noticed the table of 3 next to us didn't get their food delivered at the same time; there were 5-10 minutes between delivery of each dish. The interior is lovely and had a more upscale vibe than previously. I'd like to try some other things, but will wait a while since I thought it was a little overpriced. Sol Agave has some delicious and more moderately priced options, so I'd probably go there instead. read more

The drive was worth it! We decided to take a drive from Salt Lake City and try out this restaurant for lunch. This place is "fancy" Mexican with a nice atmosphere and terrific food. Everything sounded amazing and the food was delicious. What impressed me the most was our amazing server Diana, who took the time to patiently explain the most popular dishes and took the time to bring out little samples for us try. No one has ever gone the extra mile like this, ever. I took her suggestion and ordered a surf and turf burrito with a Birria taco on the side and my daughter had the Ranchero. Everything was absolutely delicious and fresh not to mention huge portions. I also loved that the burrito came with house made potato crisps and not the usual baked beans and rice. We have yet had anything that we didn't just love. They do an amazing job hiring too. All the employees are always friendly and so willing to take care of your every need. I absolutely love this place! It is a very strong contender with Sol Agave, which is also excellent! I love the amount of quality pictures they have on their menu too, as this makes picking a restaurant and deciding ahead of time much simpler. I wish more restaurants would do this, because a picture can sell your food. I love that. They have a similar flare as sol agave, but have made their menu their own, and do not have copycats. The guacamole ribeye appetizer had an amazing char flavor that blended well with their well seasoned guac and pomegranate seeds. The short rib bone-in Birria is quite honestly the best I've had! The Lena y Mar with all of its sides is an amazing blend of Mexican flavor that keeps me coming back to order it again almost every time! Their key-lime cheesecake is an excellent fruity and citrus dessert option that blends well with their high-quality Mexican dishes! If you're feeling like a more rich and fruity alternative to Sol Agave's butter cake, I would highly recommend the key lime cheesecake! Overall, this place is an excellent high-end Mexican restaurant that I don't have to go to Salt Lake area to enjoy! We were enjoying our chips and dip then our appetizer of guacamole was great. My hubby and I shared a surf and turf burrito. My hubby found a used bandage in his side. We told the waitress and she showed the cook and he claimed it couldn't be theirs because they all wear gloves. I felt like she was accusing us of putting it there. The server took our food away and asked us if we wanted to order something more. Heck no we lost our appetite I wasn't going to have a bite of anything more in that place. Since this restaurant opened less than a month ago, I might expect a some growing pains. If the food weren't so good, I wouldn't bother leaving a review. A few tweaks would make this place amazing. First, the main positive was the food. The roasted cauliflower appetizer was delightful and unexpected. It was served with a creamy sauce on a bed of esquites. Fantastic and worthy of trying. The mole enchiladas were also superb; the mole itself wasn't spicy, although the chicken had a medium kick. The ceviche was mild and flavorful when ordered Sonoran style (tomato-based sauce). The chips and salsa/beans served at the table were also quite good. Nothing was ridiculously spicy, including the table salsa. In contrast, the spice levels at the sister restaurant Sol Agave are usually too much for my liking. Overall, I enjoyed the food at Ocotillo more than its counterpart. Yet few things were less-than-desirable that others might want to know about: first, they don't serve alcohol ("yet," according to the server) even though cocktails are specifically mentioned on their website and beers listed in the online menu's drink section. The waitstaff seemed unapologetic we would be surprised by this. Maybe this isn't a huge deal for many folks in Utah county, but for a steakhouse this is a pretty big omission. Second, the window view from the main dining space is *right next* to a very busy road, the cars' noise and brake/headlights detract from the cozy atmosphere, especially at night. Lastly, we smelled some serious petroleum fumes--think burnt engine oil or diesel-- and I think the entrance was propped open for a few minutes to air the room out. Things got chilly rather quickly. Also few minor things: their website doesn't work on an iPad, the hours on Yelp aren't accurate as it is open in the evenings, some of the reservation links don't work. Would love to return again soon, hopefully after the bugs are worked out. The food alone is worth the consideration. read more

We got the Queso Fundido for an appetizer, which was deliciously cheesy with a nice pickled relish garnish thing on top. My husband got the Baja Tacos, which he loved. I got the Lasagne Artesano (which had short rib barbacoa in a homemade sauce) weird choice at a fancy Mexican restaurant, I know. I was expecting a twist on a classic Italian dish- but it was straight up one of the best lasagne's that I've had, really delicious!! The chips and salsa were great too.
