Food trucks and people lined up at the UN Plaza on Thursdays for lunch.
    Sylvia D.

OMG, OtG is OG. Don't tell my boss, but it's true... I pretty much show up at the office on Thursdays so I can go to Off the Grid for lunch. For those of you who aren't familiar with OtG, they organize gourmet food trucks together to make delicious mobile food available to the masses at a small handful of public open spaces throughout the city. Thursday lunches at the UN Plaza brings six vendors to tempt your taste buds. The food trucks vary from week to week, but you'll likely be able to get your fix of Asian (Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, fusion), Mexican, Americana, and drinks/dessert. Whatever genre you're craving, you'll probably find it here. Better yet, whatever it is you didn't know you were craving, you'll find it here, too! Quick tip: Check out OtG's Facebook or Twitter for weekly schedules, locations, and food truck participants. As if good food wasn't a good enough excuse to lure you out of your home or office, OtG also brings along live music and portable chairs for your pleasure and convenience. Now, if only the sun was a little less shy in San Francisco...

A lot of people are mixing up the reviews between OtG: UN Plaza and OtG: Civic Center Plaza. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME FOOLS! UN Plaza Tuesdays have very limited seating and add it all the rowdy homeless people and you get a very annoying and unpleasant environment. Just stay enclosed in the OtG section and you'll be fine, except when Calvin the African-American guy with the newspapers starts soliciting OtG patrons mid-bite like myself. Luckily the 2-3 OtG staff in the red T-shirts were here to save the day many times, salute to you guys. There were 5 trucks today and one had it's oven out of service and only served soup sadly, no empanadas there. Every time I go to an OtG, I'm wonderstruck on what to order, there are so many options. I went with An the Go today and it was very good garlic noodles for $7.50. The sun was amazingly out today and at full blast too so a few friends and I had to scout out some good places to sit. At first we went toward the crazy homeless people but that was a bust. When we returned to the OtG seating area, seats were open under the tent. I can't wait to go to the other OtGs to complete my summer.

Great OTG that is a bit of a trek from my workplace but worth the planning and effort it takes to get here. Get here early or the line will get big quickly. Check their FB page for what trucks will be here and I hear they have a twitter feed as well. The last couple of times they've had live music and there is usually a few art/jewelery stalls that tag along. If it's a nice day sit by the water sculpture and enjoy the day for awhile until you get pulled back to work.

Good: - Great atmosphere: There is lots of open seating, making it a good place to sit, read, work, and chat with people. - Work-friendly: Wi-Fi is decent and I saw a few people with a laptop watching movies or working while eating. Frustrating: - Early vendor closures: Most of the food options, including the main IKEA vendor, were completely closed by 6:00 PM. And heck it's not like they have that many food/bars here. - Abrupt hall closure: At 7:00 PM, the entire hall suddenly closed without any announcements, or signage about an early closure. So I got asked to leave while still eating :(. The security folks said they just randomly close early sometimes.

I had actually never visited Saluhall before, so walking in for the event was my first impression of the space--and it's beautiful. The whole place has a modern Scandinavian feel with lots of warm wood tones, clean lines, and an open layout that makes it feel both stylish and welcoming. For the event, tables were set up throughout the space with different James Beard-recognized chefs and restaurants serving small bites, and it felt like walking through a tasting tour of incredible Bay Area talent. The room buzzed with energy, great food, and even a few familiar faces in the crowd. There were so many standout bites, but a few really stuck with me: From Kristina Costa -- Babka Bread pudding with labneh creme anglaise and citrus supremes, which was rich and comforting in the best way. From David and Serena Fisher -- a super creative porcini meringue with cold-pressed venison tartare with a spring onion veil bite....I may have had 4. From Sana Rival -- cashew dacquoise with chamomile white rum buttercream was just a flavor explosion and the best way to end the night. There were also amazing vendors pouring and sampling, but if I'm being completely honest... the caviar was one of my favorite bites of the entire night. Simple, elegant, and one of those moments where you just pause and enjoy the indulgence. Helpful tip: If Saluhall hosts ticketed events like this again, grab tickets early. The space works really well for tasting-style events and it's a great way to experience multiple Bay Area chefs in one place. Between the beautiful Scandinavian design, the incredible food, and the energy of a room full of chefs and food lovers, it was one of those nights where you walk out thinking, wow, that was special. And now I definitely want to come back and experience Saluhall on a normal day too.

The majority of SF residents blame the city officials for letting criminals and homelessness go free, which made most retail stores shut down due to robberies. Less than 28 stores remained in business. The best part is that the public restrooms are still open, and there's access to BART/MUNI near the GNC Store. One of my favorite things about Union square is the art. The giant hearts are iconic in San Francisco and they're always being repainted and reimagined by different artists. So no matter how many times you come here, you will always see something new. I've seen so many versions over the years but I still stop to look at them every time I'm here because there is always something new to. On my last visit here there were ping pong tables set up everywhere with people playing. I saw juggling classes being offered and arts programs for kids with people gathered around having a good time. There was a reading area and books brought in on carts. They even still had up there holiday backdrop that looks like it was put there just for people to use for the perfect insta shot. I spent more than a few afternoons here people watching or enjoying a snack from the little stand nearby. It's really a great place to spend some time and a must do if you are in San Francisco. On the weekends you will find people trying to usher you onto bus tours or maybe sell you souvenirs, but you might also witness an event or see straight performers so you never really know what you're going to get.
