Like Tokyo in Ankeny they offer teppanyaki style dining with a tableside show at the grill... Or standard dining at a table where you can order the same items off a menu that are offered grillside. Taki is in a strip of businesses so parking isn't an issue. It's got a large lot. We were greeted immediately as we walked in and seated in a booth at the front of the restaurant. We were just hungry and didn't need the show. It was a little chilly inside, but that's Iowa weather and they has just opened the doors for dinner. In hindsight it might have been warmer by a grill. Lol Our server was fantastic. Personable and attentive. Along with fountain drinks we both ordered the New York strip & shrimp, fried rice, soup, salad (ginger dressing), and vegetables off the teppanyaki menu. One medium and one medium rare. Tried Taki for the first time and had a good time! We went on a Saturday evening and it was busy, so we had some wait time before our chef arrived. Our hibachi chef was hilarious, engaging, and kept us entertained the entire time! He definitely made our experience more enjoyable. As for the food, the vegetables and shrimp were good and flavorful. However, the fried rice wasn't my favorite. The texture was a bit gummy. The grill area is a little small and very tight! The worst food service I've ever experienced. They forgot to serve our table of vegetarians for 2 hours and claimed that they didn't think we wanted dinner? Even though when we arrived I directly gave our tables order to the manager - just vegetables and rice. It should have been the easiest hibachi they made all day. Instead, our group had a miserable experience watching every other table that came in after us eat hibachi with a show while we sat there with no dinner. To add insult to injury, the incompetent staff at the restaurant messed up nearly every check we had and had the nerve to charge gratuity despite their abysmal service. I stopped at taki on a cold Friday evening with high expectations. I enjoyed the salad and the Maki roll thst we ordered was great. A California roll is pretty easy to make, but they did a great job with it. I wss less impressed with the grill food. The steak was pretty bland, and the rice was meh. I originally visited this restaurant almost three years ago when I first moved to the area. I had been told that "Taki has the best sushi." Well, after two visits, three years apart, I still do not agree to that statement. Is their sushi bad? No, but it is not great either. The service was not very fast and they had to come back and clarify what one of us at the table had ordered. My husband and I had Happy Days, Dynamite, Kelburn and Kiwi Delight. The Kelburn probably had the best flavor but fell apart very easily. The middle would just drop out. The Happy Days was also not wrapped very tightly. The Dynamite came out with warm crab on the top which was very strange to me. The plus about here is that they have a very large selection of sushi so something for everyone. My wife and I eat at Taki all the time. Actually we were more than your average goers. There was a time where the service was good and the people who own the establishment was nice. The wife who is one of the owners has flipped her wig and has become one of the biggest b**ches on the planet. So one day we go into the establishment to eat. We noticed that our food was rushed and they didn't apply the normal sauce on our chicken. The waitress at the time told us she wanted to redo our food after we told her that it was ok. She went to wife and mentioned that we were not happy with our meal. She told her employee to take the food from us so she could give it to someone else. This was after we had it in our possession for about 20 min and had eaten out of it. The waitress explained that it wasn't right for her to do that and told us to eat what we could while waiting on our other order because were paying for it. We swore that we weren't going back to the restaurant ever again. But, it's my wife's favorite place and thought to give it another try. COVID-19 came along and the next time we had to order our food. Because we had the bad experience from last time, we decided to check our food before purchasing it. We asked the guy who helped us if we could check the food first. She looked over being nosy and asked us what's going on. I told her I'm checking my food just to make sure it came out the way we like it. She catches an immediate attitude and says don't touch it I'll touch the food. As I'm looking at this crazy lady. She's telling me that if we didn't want the food she was going to give it to someone else. Umm... what ??? Lol. I find it strange that the food isn't prepared fresh and that you might be eating recycled food, after someone else has coughed and breathed all on the food. Our last and final time which currently happened. We walked in after meeting our daughter and her boyfriend there. We arrived possibly 4 minutes after them. As we walked in the owner/manager met us at the door, asking how many. We told her two and asked for a booth. She asked if we had a reservation. When we told her no she said we had to have one to sit in a booth. There was 4 booths open at the time and they just opened. I didn't think about it and she walked us to a standard table. When we approached the table we noticed our daughter sitting in a booth with her boyfriend. As she walked away my wife asked how she was able to get a booth without a reservation. Miss nosy walks back not knowing that she's our daughter and says they arrived early. LIES!!! she completely lost our trust after that and we won't be returning. This lady is very rude, lies, has no professionalism. I also believe she's racist. The rest of her staff as been helpful and said she's greedy and always rude. I recommend that you don't eat there if you want a great experience go to Ohana Steakhouse. Great Sushi! We ate in the dining room rather than a Hibachi table, ordered an array of sushi to share and all of them were good. We had the Dragon Role, Absolute Fish Roll, D Rock Special, Yummy Roll, and Volcano Role. My personal favorite was the Yummy Role! D Rock special was the least favorite of the table because it was a little bland, but add some sauce to it and it tasted fine. D Rock Role is a great option for someone that's not a big Sushi Fan (its simple and no raw). The Absolute fish Role was very light and would make a good lunch option. I think it's the best roll here. I'm kinda picky when it comes to sushi and rolls but this one really deserves the credit. The Spider Roll was ok, not so special but good enough. The Tunaaaaaa. Well it's supposed to be Tuna Salad, but I'm not really a fan of vegetables and healthy stuff so I just ask them to prepare me just tuna, no salad needed. I've always liked Taki but last night kind of left me a little unhappy. It appears that if you go and sit on the dining side versus the grill side, the quality of the food decreases drastically. This is not food cooked at the grill and brought out to you, I believe it's just cooked up in the back with minimal cooking efforts but they're still charging you grill prices. I paid almost 40$ for a meal that fell incredibly short. I ordered steak and shrimp and received tiny little shrimp that were nothing like the bigger shrimp you get at the grill, my steak had zero flavor and the food overall was not very hot or fresh. I could understand the change in quality if you were paying a reduced price for dining side versus the grill as you get no show, etc but why charge the same if the food is going to be prepared in a subpar manner? This just seems unethical and ruins the dining experience, completely. Just let it be known as a warning that if you desire fresh, TRUE hibachi from here, just wait for a spot at the grill. The scallops had sand on them so they obviously didn't wash them before cooking. We weren't actually able to watch them cook the food at the hibachi grill. I have had several visits here over the past few years. I have always had great food and service. It is one of my favorite places to visit. We were okay with not changing it out but our son wanted more tempura shrimp, so we just exchanged it for an appetizer order of tempura shrimp. The location itself is very nicely decorated and provided a relaxing eating experience for us. There were hardly any other customers when we ate, we came in during lunch hours. Usually this is a great place to eat. Never a bad experience until tonight. We waited for our drinks, the drinks barely had any alcohol in them. Our reservation was 645, didn't get our drinks until 715. Portions are all pretty good and I leave full. Not tonight. Small portions of vegetables, small portions of meat. We came to Taki for sushi on a Friday night. We're able to sit down right away at the sushi bar, the place was relatively busy however. We had 2 rolls each one special and one basic, which got us soup and salad added. We also started with the spicy garlic edamame; I really enjoyed that as they were coated in chili's, if you like spicy get them. As far as the rolls, they were actually really good and I usually get tempura but tonight was mostly raw and I liked all the rolls. I mean, who messes up on something as easy as teriyaki chicken? On top of that, we ordered some "sushi" and "mussels" that came out looking identical. I've been to Taki several times, but only for the sushi. I have never been disappointed. Even when it's been busy during the weekend, a maximum wait for two people was 20 minutes. I love the specialty rolls that they have (one even includes bacon, which sounds so strange but is AMAZING and spicy!). There are a huge variety of rolls to choose from, I've probably ordered 6-10 different ones and I've always been happy. They are the perfect size, they do not fall apart easily, and their prices are fair. You get salad and soup with your order. Their desserts are absolutely delicious and unique as well.
