*** Vegetarian Review, Part 2 *** Service - always friendly and attentive. They are a 5-star staff. Food - my original review hyped up their tendon donburi. I originally gave this place a strong 4-stars because of this dish alone. It was unique to Ohkura -- never seen it at another Japanese restaurant. They would substitute the shrimp with more vegetables and it was sweet, crispy, and so savory! Delicious. Well, this is no longer on the menu so I can no longer recommend this place for vegetarian eaters. They have other donburi items, but when asked if they can make the vegetable donburi that has been on the menu for as long as I can remember, they won't do it. So, for vegetarians, the only item to eat as a main dish is vegetable tempura, but let's be honest, vegetable tempura is really an appetizer. So, sadly, after at least a 15-plus years, this is most likely our last trip. Why oh why has Yelp failed us again? Went to meet my Davis friends because my homie was celebrating a birthday and wanted Japanese food so I looked on Yelp and found this tour star place. From the outside it's in a sketchy mall a couple of stores down from an adult shop. The roads are horrible so be careful of all the potholes outside because they are huge and will ruin your tires. Only people in the restaurant and they were slow. First off NOT real crab in the California roll. Secondly the fish isn't fresh. The sesame chicken according to my friend was inedible. So much for a good birthday lunch. Rice in the bento box was stale and the gyoza was over fried. The shrimp tempura roll was cold and the unagi in top was cold as well. I stopped by this restaurant for lunch while I waited for my prescriptions to be ready at David Grant Hospital on Travis Air Force Base. I was alone and arrived at 12 pm, sharp. I was told there was a 20 to 30 minute wait to be seated, so I decided to wait. I was finally seated after a 30 minute wait. I noticed, they are hurting for help since only the one owner and looked like their son was serving the dining room and two thirds of their dining room was closed. They were only seating at five tables. I ordered their lunchbox #7 which arrived promptly and the food and service was good. They no longer have a daily lunchtime special like they did before the pandemic and the prices have risen approximately 40% so previously a meal cost of $10 is now $14, post pandemic, it's a little pricey and smaller portions than before. Soft drinks are $3.50, and after tax and tip for my lunch, my total was $24. So a little expensive for lunch, hence the four star rating. read more

My wife and I have been at Travis AFB, during this visit, since Tuesday afternoon, waiting for a flight back home to Hawaii. It just happened to be my birthday on Saturday and my wife and I find ourselves still "stuck" in Travis AFB after waking up at 4:00 AM to make a 6:30 AM Roll Call for a military flight back home to Hawai'i. As luck would have it, there were 189 people competing for 73 seats. Needless to say, we weren't high enough in the priority list to even get a sniff of the seats (figuratively, of course). We remained in the passenger terminal to try for another military flight later in the afternoon, with a roll call around 4:00 PM. Since it was my birthday, my wife volunteered to walk to the commissary to get us some sandwiches for an early lunch while we waited. Not bad...and thank you honey for being sweet...although I knew you just wanted to get your steps to avoid being chastised by your Fitbit Ionic. By the time the 4:00 PM roll call came around, 114 people gathered around the terminal competing for 39 available seats! Well, we struck out on that one too...joining a bunch of other hopefuls with dejected looks. Such goes the adventure called Space A. After making the trek back to lodging with our luggages in tow, aka the "duffel bag drag", we've developed an appetite for dinner. We checked out Yelp and narrowed our choices to Japanese or BBQ. Having tried Koreana and coming away disappointed and having just left Texas and their renowned BBQ offerings, I figured Japanese for dinner sounded good. Located in the same tired strip mall as Koreana and Pizza Hut, Ohkura's somewhat stale exterior belied a quaint interior that felt cozy. It's not modern or updated but still inviting. We were seated promptly and presented a menu with dinner specials. Their dinner specials allowed you to pick 2 entrees accompanied by soup, salad, and rice. In comparing its price to their other meals, it was clearly a better deal. My wife ordered the dinner special with sesame chicken (lightly breaded boneless chicken) and California roll. I tried the beef teriyaki (spicy) and the 8-piece spicy tuna roll. The miso soup and the salad dressing were both good. My wife liked her sesame chicken, commenting how the chicken was tender and the breading was light and crispy. She thought her Cali roll was also good and tasted fresh. My beef teriyaki was nice and tender and not fatty, with the sauce not too sweet...although it wasn't spicy. The spicy tuna roll had just the right amount of heat and tasted fresh as well. I always hate it when the sushi rice isn't fresh and a bit on the hard side. Service was a bit slow. We had to wait a bit for our dinner (soup was served quickly though). Good thing we were having a good conversation or I would've been antsy. Bad service does that to me. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of our dinner. At first I liked this restaurant but when I asked for a roll and added "TOBIKO" they brought out a roll with "masago" which is different. Masago is a lot cheaper than tobiko so a lot of sushi restaurants bank on the fact that people may not know the difference so they can save money. When I asked the server for them to switch it since I asked for tobiko, she took it and brought it back saying that they use masago instead when people order tobiko. Now, me being Japanese AND the daughter of a sushi chef/Japanese restaurant owner, I know the difference in look and taste. I think Ohkura has the best sushi in Solano County. I have not had any better in Vacaville, Fairfield, or Vallejo. The fish is always fresh and amply portioned. I tend to get the Nigiri Chef's Selection. I always judge sushi by the Nigiri. You taste the quality of the fish and the quality of the rice. Both are excellent at Ohkura. Oh, and the sushi always tastes better at the sushi bar! It's not any different, it's just that I prefer to sit at the sushi bar when having sushi. This is my go-to spot for Japanese/sushi in Fairfield after trying numerous other establishments in town. It is a bit further out towards the Base, but don't let its distance or location scare you away, as it really is a gem in the rough. The restaurant and style of food remind me of that of visiting an old friend; it's homey, unpretentious, and inviting. Ohkura isn't hiding behind polished granite, water features, ivory-white chopsticks and waiters draped entirely in black, but don't let that fool you that you aren't in for an enjoyable dining experience. I've dined at Ohkura with my co-workers for lunch bento boxes, munched on spicy tuna rolls and pork tonkatsu as part of their weekend dinner specials with my girlfriend, and devoured agedashi tofu, sashimi, and donburi bowls over cold beers with my friends on weekends.
