My kids went to a different taekwondo gym for a year before we ended up here and I'm so glad we met Master Oh. Unlike the other place, I feel like Master Oh teaches the children to be more disciplined. Yes, he's strict, but he's also SO goofy and everyone is always laughing at his quirkiness. He disciplines his students in a way that I feel is fundamentally necessary for their future. I also love how much he focuses on respect and manners. I can definitely see a clear difference between his students and students at other centers. He wants his student to always be the best version of themselves and he will hold them accountable. If you want a place for your kids to go and just play around, this center is probably not for you. On the other hand, if you want your child to learn critical thinking, self-discipline, respect, honor, accountability, and most importantly how to get past and still perform under pressure situations. This place is 100% the place to be.

That KICK would not have been possible without the training from Master Oh and Instructor Anthony. She's 9!!

My daughter, who is now 9, started tae kwon do when she was 3. We are transfers from another studio. I didn't think that we would find another studio that we love as much as our original studio. Our master from the old studio actually made a few calls trying to help us find a good studio. After calling about 5 studios she found Oh's Tae Kwon Do center. After talking to Master Oh she liked his vision, his technique, his discipline, his background on Tae Kwon Do. She was happy and comfortable letting us go to this new studio. Here we are at Ohs Tae Kwon Do center for about year now and we love it. My daughter has grown so much and learned so much. My daughter is more of a poomsae forms girl. Her forms are on point. The time that Master Oh and Instructor Anthony puts into her and the other kids is amazing. These kids look up to them and listen when they speak, the kids are focused. They are dedicated to each and every one of the students. When my daughter spars she great. Right now she has this fear in her because she thinks she's too small to be great. Master Oh is getting her out of this shell. He pairs her up with kids who are bigger than her and who are higher rank. Slowly building her confidence that YES as small as you think you are you can kick that black belts butt. Master Oh has a tiny tigers class that I would love to take my 3 year old to but the time doesn't work for me because of work. But when she's older I will have 2 girls at Ohs Tae Kwon Do center. With Master Oh and instructor Anthony's guidance my girls are going be better students in school/class/life because of what they are getting out of Masters Oh's studio.

Gaining confidence through hard work and passion, and learning that winning is possible.

9/5/26 Progress report…read more Humorous, strict, and kind Masters As I mentioned in my previous reviews, Master Yoo is always a joy to watch. He has so much personality in the way he teaches. He animated voice, different pitches and tones, and facial expressions really keep the students engaged (and the parents too, speaking for myself!). He can definitely be loud when it comes to training and those paddle claps, but he also knows when to soften his approach. It's a delicate balance, and I think he does a great job reading the room and paying attention to the students' responses before deciding how to respond. I've also really enjoyed seeing Master Y become more comfortable leading the class over the past few weeks. He is very knowledgeable and patient with the students. I often see him walking around the room correcting their forms and demonstrating movements to make sure everyone understands and is training correctly. It's been nice watching his confidence grow as a teacher. Black belt student teachers We've had the opportunity to learn from two fabulous black belt student teachers: Andrew, who we've had for several classes now, and Lilian, who we've had for one class so far. Both are kind, encouraging, disciplined, and great role models in the classroom. They demonstrate beautiful form and are always very focused and precise when showing the students how to perform a task. They also bring such a positive energy into the classroom. My girls are especially motivated whenever they get to have class with them. They come home wanting to practice more and do better at each class, which I think says a lot about the impact these student teachers have on them. Improving punches & kicks My girls continue to be very motivated to improve their punches and kicks and, more importantly, to perform them correctly. So far, they've learned the traditional front kick, axe kick, and roundhouse kick, along with the jumping versions of these kicks. With each class, I can see them becoming more comfortable and confident with the movements. It's been really fun watching them go from figuring out the basics to getting more confident with each technique. Basic One & Their First Belt Test The girls mastered Basic One in preparation for their belt test and have also gotten to see demonstrations of Basic Three and Basic Five from some of the upper-level students. Needless to say, they were EXTREMELY excited to earn their new belts. We practiced with them day and night leading up to the test! For the belt testing itself, there were multiple color groups, and I definitely underestimated how many people would show up early. I originally thought the testing would be completed in stages, but it ended up being everyone in one class, which made for a very packed waiting area. More than a few parents, myself included, ended up watching the testing from outside the classroom. And let me tell you... it was a little brutal outside. It happened to be one of the hottest and most humid days, AND we had to deal with mosquitoes attacking us. But we all survived! I also found that the white belt testing was a little less intense than what we had anticipated. But honestly, I think that's a good thing. It probably wouldn't be very encouraging for a first belt test to feel overwhelmingly difficult. The goal is to challenge the kids while also giving them that first taste of accomplishment and confidence to push harder. The girls were absolutely thrilled to receive their new belts, and they were especially excited to take a photo with both Masters afterward. Definitely a proud parent moment! Self-Defense After belt testing week, there has been more focus on self-defense, which I really appreciate. The girls are learning to use their voices by speaking loudly and confidently, followed by getting into a defensive position. They're also learning the difference between an attack position and a defense position, and more importantly, understanding when and why each position is used. I really like that self-defense is being introduced early and that the focus isn't just on physical movements, but also on awareness, confidence, and using their voices. Respect & focus One of my favorite parts of class is how it always ends with a team huddle. Master Yoo reviews the students' focus tasks, talks about what they did well, and points out areas they can continue to improve. When they do a good job, they can earn their strip colors, which gives the kids a little extra motivation to stay focused and do their best. It's a simple way to reinforce respect, focus, discipline, and teamwork while ending class on a positive note. My girls continue to have so much fun, and I love seeing their confience and skill grow with each class! PS. It is referral month if your kids want to try something new!

Enter Taekwondo Spirit. Master Lee = Amazing. We chose this studio over two years ago and I have watched my kids grow in body, mind and Spirit (no pun intended). The staff here from Master Cyril in the older days through the current staff have been nothing short of great. They are delicate where they need to be and tough when needed. They very much specialize in children. The studio has built and maintains a community feeling. They have definitely served the youth of La Mirada and the surrounding community by teaching discipline, confidence and self defense. They even participate in local tournaments if you are ready and they echo that sentiment. The sport of Taekwondo is definitely a great introduction to martial arts that develops flexibility, strength and balance. I'm very appreciative to Taekwondo Spirit for what my children have learned through them. Humility seems to flow through this place with nothing but respect given by and to everyone. The only "negative" I could even consider about the location is that the parking lot could get tight in the afternoon hours with the neighboring gym.

I had tried another studio in Whittier who are through the Regional Center (Victory Tae Kwon Do) but unfortunately even free lessons through were not worth it in comparison to here. My son was trained by master Cyril for about 1 year before their lack of availability and our school schedule conflicted to the point of no longer being able to fit us in. The studio is small so understandable, just sad. I realize teaching autistic kids is not their specialty, but I had gone to one other local studio in La Habra that basically turned us away because they didn't want to do the hands on work it takes to teach a child that lacks imitation skills, while another in Fullerton was extremely overpriced and for only 15 minute sessions in addition to being too far. I hope to come back to this studio soon if they have the availability.

He has now been attending for about 10 months, and looking back, I truly feel it was one of the best decisions we've made. The biggest change is his confidence. He now introduces himself proudly, speaks up, and expresses his thoughts wherever he goes. Our entire family has been amazed by how much he has grown. Beyond learning taekwondo techniques, he has developed confidence, discipline, respect, and good posture. I've heard that many taekwondo schools focus heavily on games and entertainment to keep young children engaged. This school is different. They don't simply keep the kids busy with activities--they teach real taekwondo. The instructors emphasize discipline, proper etiquette, respect, focus, and correct technique. For our family, those values are far more important than simply having fun. The Master and the Manager genuinely care about each child and give them personal attention. You can tell they want every student to learn taekwondo the right way, not just earn the next belt. I especially recommend this school for children around 5 or 6 years old. Those early years are such an important time for building confidence and character. I honestly believe that if we had missed this opportunity, my son might still be the shy little boy who was afraid to speak up. We plan to continue here for many years. I've also heard that staying in martial arts through the teenage years can make a huge difference, and I can already see why. If you're looking for a school that values discipline, respect, manners, focus, and authentic taekwondo training--not just games and entertainment--I highly recommend this place. On top of that, their tuition is very fair and reasonable for the quality of instruction and personal attention each child receives. We truly feel that every dollar has been worth the investment.

This review has been long overdue, and I'm so glad I finally had the chance to write it…read more About a year ago, I decided I wanted my boys to start jiu-jitsu. As a mom, I believe it's so important for children to learn basic self-defense not because I expect something bad to happen, but because I want them to have the confidence and skills to protect themselves if they ever need to. At first, my boys were nervous and intimidated. We visited a few schools before making a decision, but from the moment we walked into Teragi, we knew this place was different. Everyone made us feel like family. The professors and coaches are exceptional not only because of their experience and skill, but because they genuinely care about every child. They encourage, support, and meet each child where they are. I especially want to mention my youngest. Jiu-jitsu didn't come naturally to him at first, and he struggled to understand the techniques. The professors and coaches were incredibly patient and never made him feel like he was behind. They allowed him to learn at his own pace, and now it's amazing to see how much his confidence and skills have grown. That patience meant so much to our family. There's no pressure for kids to be the best. Every child learns differently, and the professors and coaches truly understand that. Since we homeschool, Teragi has become more than just a place to train. My boys have made wonderful friendships, and we've found an incredible community. I also have to mention how clean the academy is! It never has that old gym smell and is always welcoming. I've watched both of my boys grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. They're more confident, disciplined, and respectful. If you're on the fence about jiu-jitsu because you don't like the idea of your child being on the ground, I completely understand. I felt the same way. But the reality is that many real-life self-defense situations end up on the ground, and knowing what to do can make all the difference. Thank you, Teragi, for creating such an incredible environment for our children. We are so grateful to be part of the Teragi family, and I couldn't recommend this academy more.

The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.
