Nathan: est. 1982. Celebrating 30 years of Fun & Fabulousness.
Dirty 30. The Big 3-0. A whole new age box. I was aware of all of this. I figured I could do one of two things: 1.) Bitch and moan; or 2.) Grow up, embrace the inevitable, and drink with the people who mean the most to me. #2, FTW. (Besides, there's ALWAYS other times that allow for bitching and moaning).
So with a mind for celebration and a Google Chrome add-on, I was able to click on all 2000+ of my Facebook friends and invite them to descend upon Oil Can Harry's to celebrate my milestone by getting good and soused. Naturally, I knew 2,000+ people would not show up, but I felt it was an interesting talking point in the month leading up to the night. As my friend Jenny said: "Who the hell do you think you are? Perez Hilton?" Actually, no...I'm a lot less annoying and kiss-ass-y than him.
And so the evening began. I had invited friends from all facets of my increasingly rich and complex social network, and I was thrilled that so many of them would finally be meeting. There was no pressure, no garish homages to me everywhere, and no diva party planning beforehand. As the invitation decreed: "Come as you are, whenever you can, for as long as you want, with whomever you choose." Simple as that.
One of my favorite bartenders working the main bar, Dane, offered to buy me my first cocktail. But of course, sweetie. My younger brother Neal and sister-in-law Lisa were on the scene first, and they quickly found common ground with my friends Patrick and Clint, a talented interior designer and artist, respectively. Since the young couple would be building a new house, they found all sorts of common ground on design aesthetics. Connections were already being made. I thought it was quite amusing to see everyone mix and mingle, and to watch personalities click around me. I likened it to sitcom crossovers, and the dialogue between characters from different worlds. Or as my friend Eric remarked: "Kind of like when Mrs. Garrett from Facts of Life would show up on Diff'rent Strokes."
The patio was a marvelous space. The weather was agreeable, and there was plenty of room for everyone to congregate and for me to schmooze from one group to another with everyone remaining comfortable. With so much of my personal history taking place over the years on this patio, it added another dimension to the already amazing gathering.
My witty friend and fellow St. Dave's parishioner Shiloh (the original Shiloh, before Brangelina coopted the name from her) and I talked church as others began to arrive. Here's where I met my greatest challenge: staying lucid enough to greet everyone, even though birthday shot offers were coming in faster than I could process. Luckily for me, my pacing was perfection.
My best friend Issa couldn't make it (he was on duty that night), but our awesome married friends Jenny and Chad arrived, with Jenny sporting the bluest hair ever that had just been dyed that day. Issa had instructed her to "give that homo a kiss". I got one from each...along with a bartender's choice shot and a lesson in how to dance low to the ground.
Then there were the Yelpers. A year ago, we'd met at Charlie's, and they remembered how much of a blast that night was. So many of the amazing ladies of Yelp had come to party; Catherine T., Keri B., Katie T. and her fiance Greg, Melissa A., Jennifer O., Quani C., and a new friend, Vinita G. Keri provided me with a "30's Survival Bag" of Ciroc Vodka and cake balls from Austin Cake Ball; Melissa gave me a package of Trojan Magnums. Armed with these items, I think my 30's will be A-OK. And my (other) favorite gay Yelper, David M., stopped by and grabbed a boob or two. Of course.
Major props to the staff. One of the owners, Larry, welcomed us with open arms (and followed up the next day to make sure we all had a good time). The always awesome patio bartenders were nothing but fun, flirty, and fabulous. The mark of a good gay bar is how comfortable a "man's man" str8 guy can be while visiting. My friend Des' boyfriend couldn't be straighter, but the bartenders made him feel right at home. The last I saw, he was taking shots with them and dancing to my appointed theme song for the night, Flo Rida's "Wild Ones". Wow.
There were so many other close friends who came out for my big night, and there (literally) isn't room to mention them all in one review. But the best part of the night (aside from trying to steal Yvette's candy apple red Louis Vuitton bag) was when Yvette said plainly and simply "I love you, and I love that you are in my life". It was hard for me not to tear up. Because that's exactly how I feel about every one of my friends, who not only made my 30th birthday special, but continue to make my life special every single day.
Thank you Oil Can Harry's, for hosting and taking care of us all that evening. My birthday couldn't have been better.
