Cold soup but I wasn't pleasantly surprised by the sushi. Service was cold and borderline rude.

This is just a mini update as I am adding the updated menu. I have been going to this place less and less over the last couple of years as the price has gone up a bit and the fish portions have shrunk. The spicy tuna, for instance, tastes more like said spicy sauce and has fewer chunks of tuna, and the last time I got an eel roll, it was cold and had more cucumber than eel. This has all been happening since they started doing takeout more. I prefer the nearby Hane, a couple blocks down on 1st, and if I don't mind paying a buck or two more, Blue Mountain blows this place out of the proverbial water, an avenue away. read more

This is their Omakase, $78 delivered with miso soup. They claim 12 pieces including toro, king salmon, scallop, uni, a toro roll, and crispy rice. I actually got 13 pieces plus the toro roll--so plenty of food. Nigiri sizes were solid, but the fish quality just wasn't there. When you order omakase, you expect quality over quantity. Here, it's the opposite. You get a mountain of sushi--easily enough for two people--but it feels more like bulk value than a curated experience. For me, omakase should be about finesse, not stuffing you like a midnight buffet on Carnival cruises. Torn on this one: great deal for volume, but not for omakase standards. Came here on a whim because we were craving sushi. We sat inside around 7pm on a Friday and noticed we were the only ones eating at this establishment - so we were a bit hesitant, but the service was so wonderful so we decided to stay. It seems like this place gets a lot of to-go orders since we saw plenty of Uber eats / DoorDash and people walking in to pick up their orders to take back home. The restaurant indoor sitting itself is pretty standard and a little dim, but it does smell a bit fishy (I know it's a sushi restaurant, but it was that weird fishy smell that for some reason you never smell in sushi restaurants). But the service was immaculate! Our server was so attentive and always cleared our table in time between our appetizers everything was so clean. The sushi itself was exactly as you'd expect at a random mid tier place on kips bay, I think it's a bit pricey for the quality (the special rolls) and ambiance. We got the beef appetizer rolls and the avocado salad as the appetizer. I felt like the beef was a bit chewy and the avocado salad is literally just an avocado sliced up over iceberg lettuce. Both apps seemed overpriced for what you get. Despite that, we enjoyed our sushi rolls still! They were really good but still a smidge overpriced. read more

My friend and I came here at the suggestion of our other friend that lives around the corner, and it did not disappoint. I got the sushi platter with 9 pieces plus a spicy tuna roll and it was more than enough food. I ordered the special maki combo C for $18. It came with a spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna roll, and spicy white tuna roll. They were big pieces and super filling and fresh. I also ordered the salmon avocado roll for $8. The salmon and avocado were super fresh as well. The salmon nigiri/sushi was $3.75 for one piece. While the sushi may not necessarily blow anyone away, it's still well-made, with fresh ingredients, at a great value. For appetizers, I had the edamame and some pork gyoza. It is definitely an improved version of the shrimp tempura roll and to be honest, I don't even like lobster that much. I think that it was well put together and not too pricy at $12. Shrimp Shumai - The portion size on this was smaller than expected, however, it was very good. Ironically done better than several Chinese places that I have been to. I think it's a tad expensive at $6 but the quality is there. Salmon Mango Roll - Never tried this before but I didn't like it. It's more of me than the dish though. I just don't think the mango juices really complement the fishy salmon all that well. Avocado is 10x better in a roll with salmon. I'd avoid this unless you like this mix. Salmon Skin Roll - A new roll for me that I have been going around to try these days. This was pretty good here I must say. The salmon skin was crispy but not as crisp as I would like. I think it must have soaked too much water from the rice and softened. Shrimp Tempura Roll - Very good. Standard. Nothing out of the ordinary here but it's a good staple. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 10/10 I mean I already came back. In the Kip's Bay area, this is definitely one of the better places. I'd be interested to try their more specialty rolls. Came on a Sunday, a little before 4. I knew it was a gamble with all the mixed reviews, but I was starving and it was closest to my work. Surprisingly they have a lunch special daily until 4pm, and the server told us we can order from than menu. Even tho it was completely empty, you can tell they were getting many online orders so I was praying the constant change over would leave some fresh food for me. For a starter, I ordered the Ika Age (fried calamari) and it came out heavily battered, hard crunchy rings that was most certainly NOT squid. The porky aftertaste alone gave it away, despite the fact I work and cook with fresh whole squid all the time. The lunch special came with salad- typical few slices of iceburg lettuce with 1 grape tomato and 1 slice of cucumber. Next the watered down instant miso soup- at least it was warm. The bento box came with 3 pieces of bland prior frozen shumai, a pathetic looking California roll and a no so fresh protein (shrimp tempura again over battered over fried and hard). I got 3 rolls as well. My biggest problems (besides the pig anus batter fried rings) were 1) The presentation was just a mess. The roll we're all all over the place in shape size cut and consistency. Falling apart, and just look inedible. 2) The rice itself was stone cold and bland 3) overall flavor was lacking to nil 4) And although service was prompt, it was just like the rice- unfriendly and cold An extra star only because I didn't immediately die of food poisoning, and at least the fish didn't smell horrible. You've seen dozens of other sushi spots exactly like Oishi Bay. You have your hand rolls, your special rolls, your kitchen appetizers, bento boxes, and lunch specials. It is not at all a destination restaurant nor one that people typically sit down to eat at, but it's good value sushi for when you're in the neighborhood and want a spicy tuna roll or ten. I've had some decent meals from Oishi Bay, but most recently they've mistakenly swapped out rolls that I've ordered with ones that I didn't, and I found tissue paper inside one of my rolls which shut down that meal pretty quickly. The prices are relatively low for sushi so I guess it's apt to say here that you get what you pay for. read more

Although it's a small restaurant, it had a small trickle of customers coming in and out at around 5 p.m. during a weekday evening when I arrived. The dining room is basic and was alright for the area, which means nothing fancy. I could imagine this place having many more customers during a lunch rush as it's near a major hospital. I ordered an entire grilled squid and a deluxe sashimi platter which came with 18 pieces of sashimi and a large bowl of rice. I would say the quality of the sashimi is in line with most Chinese-run sushi restaurants around the city. You'll get a fair price, good portions and quick service. I finished my meal in around 45 minutes, with the squid coming out first. The entire meal which included a free salad was about $30. The best thing about places like Oishi Bay is that you come with certain expectations and when you get it, you'll leave satisfied. read more

I love this place even before COVID. My boyfriend and I have been eating here and getting take out and delivery for years. We usually get hibachi (for him) and I get sushi, the quality of both is actually pretty great which is surprising, I typically don't like to get both of those things at the same place for many reasons. We've had the following: chicken hibachi, clear soup, tuna naruto rolls, unagi, and beef negimaki. All prepared very well and delicious. The staff here is very nice. You just have to slow down a bit. I came here for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon since I work nearby. They have 30% cash back on Groupon. Their lunch specials are actually pretty good - $9.75 for the bento box lunch special (entree, soup, salad, rice, shrimp shumai, california roll) or 2 rolls and soup or salad for $9.75. I ordered the salmon teriyaki bento box and my friend ordered the sashimi lunch special (10 pieces, rice, soup or salad for $13). The quality of fish was not bad, much fresher than I expected for the price. The bento box was a lot of food and the salmon was grilled well. Service was fast and attentive. I ate here the other week since our group was craving sushi. There was a Yelp deal to purchase on the app that gave $25 dollars for $20. We started by sharing one order of the dragon balls which was spicy tuna wrapped in slices of avocado in ball form. It was delicious with the creamy avocado complimenting the spicy tuna. For entree I got two specialty rolls, the Caribbean roll and the Ironman roll. The iron man roll had white tuna, yellowtail, avocado and caviar center wrapped in a green soy paper topped with slices is tuna, salmon and a drizzle of spicy mayo and wasabi mayo. The Caribbean roll had tempura shrimp with avocado that was wrapped with shrimp, avocado as coconut topped with eel sauce. The sushi tasted really fresh and I enjoyed the flavor and texture combinations of both rolls. I also had a side order of fried rice that was balanced in flavor. My friend had ordered the pineapple fried rice which was a little too sweet to be a savory dish. It could have been that it just happened that the pineapple was super sweet in this batch. Service was good overall and our waitress made sure our cups were always full of green tea to keep us warm from the cold day. We would consider returning in the future if we are in the area. read more
