Tucked away, I mean tucked away in the corner, off a shopping plaza on Milwaukee, the prospect for delicious sushi brought us here. My companion ordered a few specialty maki, another one ordered ramen, and I ordered a few pieces of Saba and a roll. There were a few tables chowing on the $30 AYCE sushi lunch. If that's what you like, go for it. My companion pronounced her sushi "Oishi," and the other said their ramen was just ok, rather bland. My Saba was delicious. We are big fans of sushi in my house, especially all you can eat sushi. We used to go to Taste of Tokyo when it was all you can eat. Since it no longer is, we have been going to Sushi Grove across the street. So I was pretty pleased to hear there was another AYCE sushi option nearby. We stopped by for lunch on Wednesday and it was pretty empty. I don't think anyone else stopped by the entire time we were there. Not sure why as I think the sushi was good and the staff was super attentive. They frequently checked in on us to refill our waters and to make sure we were good. I liked that their lunch menu had a lot of choices and was very similar to the dinner menu, whereas other place's AYCE lunch menus are sometimes more limited. I was craving sushi and a place that was byob so I landed at Oishi Sushi. The moment I walked in, I was surprised by how full it was! I think there were only 2 tables left so I was lucky to be seated right away. The employees are kind and the restaurant is clean and casual. The menu is quite extensive as the options range between japanese and chinese food. I brought my own wine and was charged $5 for opening it. I ordered the veggie egg rolls which were not good as the inside was mushy and flavorless. The sushi that I ordered was good and came out quickly. We've always considered this our favorite spot, but our Valentine's Day visit was incredibly disheartening. We called 40 minutes in advance to put our name down, drove over 20+ minutes to get there, and were still largely ignored by staff upon arrival while another couple was seated before us. The lack of organization only got worse once we were at the table. It took 20 minutes just to receive water. Despite having been there significantly longer than the tables around us, we had to watch a newer party to our left receive their full meal, while a different party to our right--who arrived well after us--received their appetizers before we had anything. There was zero communication or apology for the delay. The only bright spot was a kind server/busser who noticed our toddler's frustration and made it her mission to get their juice and nuggets out. We ended up paying for the toddler's meal and leaving empty-handed. Great food doesn't make up for feeling invisible, especially on a special occasion. read more

Sadly the good food is completely overshadowed by the fact that the owners completely stiff the waitresses of tips. The owner sat us and gave us the menus, then took 15 minutes to pick up our AYCE form. Another 45 minutes for the food to be done. The woman who was bussing tables filled our waters and cleared plates constantly and was so attentive and kind. When we were done eating my sister went to go pay the bill and tipped on her card but I wanted to make sure the woman got a personal tip because of how great she did. When I went to thank her and hand her some cash, she declined and kept telling me she couldn't because her boss was right there and I insisted saying she did great, it got to the point she had tears in her eyes and looked a little afraid saying her boss is right over there. When I got outside, I told my sister what happened and we decided to have her go back inside to remove the tip from our card because neither of us wanted to tip to a business that clearly takes it for themselves and intimidates its employees. When the man gave my sister a new receipt he kept trying to give her a pencil to write and sign with and she kept telling him that she needs a pen, which honestly just doesn't look good. I started with hot and sour soup which was perfect, not too spicy (could have used a bit more heat) and loaded with veggies and tofu. I love veggie tempura but the broccoli is always uncooked (tempura inside is nearly raw). They have the absolute best crab Rangoon. These come 3 to an order and are huge! Loaded with a sweet cream cheese filling and you can dip into an even sweeter red sauce. For sushi, the salmon nigiri was super fresh and tender. My husband loved the eel pieces. The best items on the AYCE menu are the salmon and eel nigiri, the alaska rolls, and the crab rangoon. The shrimp tempura rolls are also good and have a nice crunch. I noticed on my most recent visit the tuna rolls and tuna nigiri aren't as good as the salmon. The tuna is a bit fibrous and doesnt have the same rich and fresh taste the salmon does. Regardless, the items I mentioned at the beginning of this review are excellent and well worth it! However, I dont think the AYCE will be worth it in the future as I ate too much and hurt my stomach! Maybe next time I'll just order a couple salmon and eel nigiri, a alaska roll and a crab rangoon and that should satisfy my craving! read more

The staff is very nice and attentive. I ordered two rolls, Waukegan and Rainbow. They were both standard size and constructed well. While good tasting, I feel the fish could have a fresher texture. I also ordered that Yakisoba, which came with salad. The salad vegetables were very fresh with a ginger dressing. This dressing was not a traditional ginger dressing, and I felt it to be a bit watery and dark yellow. Unfortunately, the Yakisoba was not prepared correctly, the noodles were not fried, and it was served on a sauce. I sent it back asking that the sauce be drained and the noodles fried until crisp. I specifically asked them not to re-make it as I was tight on time. The dish came back better, but more like a Chinese Lomein. In conclusion, very good service, friendly people, food ingredient quality was fine, but while the restaurant is billed as Japanese, the food definitely has heavy Chinese (American style) influences. A bit nit-picky, but worth noting the bottled soy sauce and to-go condiments were also Chinese. read more

Here's what you need to know going in: 1. For AYCE, the sushi is pretty good. You can get pieces of nigiri and also a decent variety of rolls. It is, however, not as high quality as your top-tier sushi places. 2. The service will be slow. I think 3 people total work here, so even if there are only a few tables, there will be take out orders and your food will take a while to arrive. 3. At least 1 roll has "washabi tobiko crunch" on top. It's like a strange thick mix of wasabi and panko, which tastes kind of good but also kind of greasy. My boyfriend and I recently went to Oishi for dinner, and we were excited to try a different sushi place than our regular spots. The space is nice,and has a lot of color on the walls when you walk in. It is worth mentioning that there aren't that many tables. I think we got the last two available seats, and they were at the sushi bar (which was fun). It is an all you can eat (AYCE) sushi place too. When we sat down we were given our order sheets quickly. The price is also $28.99 a person, some of the pictures on this page still showed a dollar less. I was super impressed with the amount of options on the AYCE menu. You can choose from a nice variety of appetizers, nigiri's, and rolls. We really liked the crab Rangoon and the fried scallop appetizers! It was fun to watch them make the sushi too. I felt like the fish was fresh and the yellowtail nigiri was my favorite. The only reason I did not give this place 5 stars was because since it was crazy busy in there mistakes were happening and service was a bit slow. I don't think the restaurant was intentionally trying to mess anything up of course. However, I ordered the "fashion roll" it is cucumber and avocado on the inside with tuna laid on top. As I ate the roll I noticed it had good crunch, but quickly realized it was made without avocado. My boyfriend had ordered a tobiko nigiri and it never came. Oishi Sushi is one of my go to sushi places. All the workers are nice. I always recommend getting the all you can eat, it's definitely worth the price. All you can eat menu has great appetizer options as well as really good roll selections. Personally I would recommend getting any of the tuna or salmon rolls, those are some of my favorites. These AYCE sushi places, with a normal menu as well and lunch specials, are starting to feel very similar to one another. Not to say that this is necessarily a bad thing, but the look, feel, prices, and flavors are very similar to one another and Oishi Sushi is no exception. Oishi Sushi has a bit of a simplistic modern vibe to it with textured walls and floors and a few bold colors. Plates are simply white for the most part with the decoration on the food providing most of the color and design experience. Food here is fresh, with simple flavors -- with similar flavor combinations to what you'd find in sushi grove, sushi para, and other local restaurants. The only fish I tried in this visit was salmon, inside a maki roll -- and it was fresh, bouncy, and had good marbling to the meat. The shrimp tempura roll was crunchy with creamy avocado and fish roe. The eel was tasty and had a good firmness to the meat. The nakeyaki udon was fairly standard with a good mix of vegetables and naruto. The house salad was crisp and refreshing with the standard miso dressing. Overall, if you've eaten at other similar concepts in the Chicago suburbs, the food at Oishi sushi will be familiar to you. Simple, fresh, and fairly priced. read more

Came in on a Friday night and got seated right away. The place is nice and has half booths and tables as well as bar seating in front of the sushi chef. The host directed us to our table and the server took our order right away. They offer off the menu food and they have all you can eat sushi for $20.95 per person during dinner - so cheap!! They had a lot of selections from their ayce menu and we ordered enough for us to be full. Our food and drinks came extremely fast which was great. DO NOT RECOMMEND First things first. Their service was absolutely horrible, and this isn't even my first time here; their service has always been lacking. Some things to note about their service: - Waited over 30 minutes, not even in rush hour, for a glass of water and 2 plates. They needed 5 reminders until it finally came. - They treat you and look down on you as if they don't care about the care they are providing you with at all. - They either never take your dirty dishes, or they take the food that you haven't even started on without asking, and they walk away so fast you can't even stop them. - Their attitude is absolutely ridiculous. Not only do they act like they're above you, they also act as if they want to leave-- which I completely understand, but they don't even put in an ounce of effort to please customers. Second, their food is never consistent. Their food is either: - Overly salty - Uncooked - Flavorless - Sour - Not fresh Lastly, their ambience isn't the greatest either. To list some specifics: - Dirty tables - Dirty Dishes - Crumbs, dust, food, and hair on the floors - Same music played for 3 hours - Entire place was dark, but not the elegant dark. More like trying to hide the gunk in the restaurant dark. Overall, my 5 experiences here were all horrible. Not only was their food, service, AND ambience awful, but their food was also extremely overpriced for less than average edible food. The all you can eat $20.95 provides an abundance of options, ranging from sushi, to salads, to fried rice, chicken, dessert, and soup. The big hang up is you have to eat what you order to avoid any extra charges. Every roll I have had was fresh tasting and flavorful...some more than others but the choice is yours.
