There may be a line but if there is it's okay because it goes quick and for a good reason. Staff here are always friendly and welcoming. Inside is very small. Like three people small. But that's what it is. A fast casual Mexican restaurant that is cash only. Menu is basic and to the point. I always go for a burrito. The burritos are fantastic. The most important ingredient is the main show; Yes of course, the tortilla. It's dangerously good. You take a bite, then immediately want another, and then another. Next thing your burrito is gone. Came to Ojai with the family for an adventure day. Setup at Libbey Park and walked over. Got there midday on a Monday. They were sold out of a lot of items already. Burrito was great. Stopped off at the Ojai tortilla House for the first time ever. Their hours are 11am to 2pm everyday so it's always been outside of my window but today after a quick farmers market trip I was able to stop by. The line before opening caught me off guard so I immediately had high hopes for something earth shattering. It's a small space that can fit maybe 5-6 people so depending on how many people you have with you it could just fit one group. The menu is straight forward and simple. One thing I've know was that they hand make all of their tortillas so I was pumped for that. I got the chicken burrito with everything, mild sauce and no cheese. It was a hefty burrito for $12 so well worth the value. The burrito though was lacking some flavor. The chicken had a nice Smokey flavor but it just seemed to miss the wow factor. The onion and cilantro was even super mild in flavor and didn't pack that aromatic punch you'd expect. The tortilla definitely kept this score at a 3.5 for me if it was store bought it would be a mid two burrito. Just off of Ojai Ave on N. Signal St, there's a little hole in the wall taco place. I'm here driving a charter bus and had a few hours to wait, saw that shop and decided to give it a try for dinner, just because it was super close to where I parked. Frankly, I thought it was probably just another taco place and wasn't expecting much... but BOY was I wrong! One pork and one chicken soft taco and they both knocked my socks off. I'm not even a chicken taco fan, but that one was mind blowing good! The owner whose name I won't even attempt to spell because I would just butcher it, was very kind. As we were walking around the area, we noticed a long line of people lining up so we decided to line up as well. The reason why the wait was long is because of a really tight operation. There is only one person taking the order, one person prepping the tortillas and another person making the tortillas and one cashier and it's cash only and the prices are really cheap for the area. This place always has a line out the door during the few hours they are open. And we heard many customers had come from LA and other areas to make the stop at their "favorite burrito/quesadilla" stop. They are quick to move the line along so don't worry about the wait. They keep the little hole in the wall clean and you can see the tortillas being rolled out and made fresh right behind the counter. It's a small but effective operation they run. All the food is simple and authentic. The rice stood out to me as most authentic feeling along with the tortilla. We each got a different item. I got the chicken burrito and we also got a steak burrito. It wasn't "knock your socks off" flavorful or really anything special, it just tasted very fresh and left my tummy feeling very clean with the cabbage contents. It's also nice that they don't overload it with rice and beans and cheese like a lot of other places do. It had a perfect combo of the components. That's the best part about the meal is the clean feeling. Other than that, nothing special besides the small town good people vibe of this little food spot. We also got a steak quesadilla. The difference between the burrito and quesadilla is the quesadilla gets cooked and cheese melted and does not have rice and beans in it. So I'd opt for a burrito so you can get more goodies! But then again, people love those quesadillas on the fresh tortillas. I was expecting the tortilla to be chewier in texture but it was soft and fluffy with a slight chew. What? It's only open for 5 hours a day? Cash only? I was pretty ready to write this place off as having the hype of artificial scarcity surrounding it. I'd been to Ojai more than a few times and passed by quite a bit when there was a line and later in the day after they had already closed. So, I got up early so I could go to the Tortilla House when they opened, half prepared to be disappointed. When I arrived there was a deceptively long line (6ft apart) but it moved pretty quickly and I got the burrito with the recommended al pastor and I got the watermelon agua fresca. While I was waiting I watched the tortillas being made in the back half of the space. So, you see the 5 and obviously know that I loved it. I didn't think a fresh tortilla would make any sort of difference but does it ever! There a nice breadiness to it that I hadn't really experienced before. The al pastor was also delicious, not overly seasoned but the meat was flavored well. The watermelon agua fresca though-I usually find watermelon flavored items to fall into two categories: 1) naturally flavored but weak or 2) tons of flavor but obviously through artificial means. The agua fresca here has a sweetness to it but is also naturally light, it finds that balance. I don't know how they do it but they do. They could rename themselves the Ojai Agua Fresca house and just serve that and it would still get 5 stars. read more
