Ojiya has been one of our favorite restaurants in Chino Hills for years. Before we had kids, my husband & I used to come here almost every week. There's usually a wait during the dinner rush, but the food is absolutely worth it. Everything is consistently delicious & the quality keeps us coming back. Some of our must order items are the miso sea bass, teriyaki beef (get the sauce on the side) pork cheek & salmon. The sushi is always incredibly fresh and large cuts. One of my favorite little traditions is starting the meal with their sake served in the wooden box. It makes it fun taking shots. We came here years ago when we first moved in the area from friends recommendation. All I remember was the long line and food/bento was mid. My husband and I stopped by this restaurant again because we wanted something light and Japanese food seemed like a great option. I was so surprised by the amount of seafood they put in each handroll. They definitely made sure you had more than enough seafood in each bite. Ankimo was also very fresh! What stood out to me was the rice to fish ratio. The rice was small and the fish was generously thick, which made every bite super satisfying. I honestly can't remember having sushi quite like that before. The chefs are from Japan, so you can tell the food is authentic. We also ordered the teriyaki bowl. It was okay, but nothing special. I cannot believe it's been 11 years since my last review, which means I've been frequenting this restaurant for even longer. On the plus side, definitely still a 5 star rating from me. This is literally the only non AYCE sushi place I'll go to. I've tried all the other sushi places (and there's a lot) near me, and the quality elsewhere doesn't compare to here. I'll agree the prices at a bit higher here as well than other places, but it truly makes up for it in food quality! If you've never been here before, coming into the restaurant it'll look like a small hole in the wall restaurant from Japan. They even have a wooden overhang in the booth sections to give it that Japanese feel. There are a couple mini bench seats in the front waiting area. People are usually standing up or waiting outside. There's only a handful of tables and booths, so there's usually a wait. Make sure to put your name down on the paper when you get in for the waiting list so you don't lose your spot. The ambiance may seem a little dark when walking in, but once you get seated there's ample lighting to see the menu and to eat. The food and service are still top notch. I love anything I get from here. My usual is the bento box though since it comes pretty much with everything for a meal. If not, I'll opt for the salmon skin salad as my 2nd choice. I've pretty much tried everything on the menu by now.. and nothing disappoints. Leah has been our server for years.. and she is the best! Always friendly and with a smile. Quick to take our order, bring drinks, refills.. anything we need. Can't beat great food and service. If you're looking for a local sushi place, gotta give this a try. Love this place. I had the Chirashi Deluxe. Tuna, yellowtail, salmon, albacore, shrimp, salmon roe, scallop, sea urchin (uni), river eel, egg, and real crab. I am no carbs right now so instead of rice I got a second salad. 2 salads! Nice. I also had miso soup and a nigori sake but I can't remember the saki brand. Went to Ojiya Sushi and We lowkey kept looking at each other after every bite Like, it's that good!! sat at the bar and the chefs were seriously the sweetest!! Super attentive making bang after bang amazing nigiri. We ordered so much, The nigiri quality honestly caught us off guard. Everything tasted insanely fresh and buttery and you can tell the fish quality speaks for itself & the sushi sizes wow!! We had toro,yellowtail, scallop, hamachi seared nigiri these especially melted immediately. One of those places where you accidentally keep ordering "just one more plate." The wife and I decided to come out on a week night to have a nice dinner. Ojiya is a cozy neighborhood Japanese restaurant and follows the old standard of closing between lunch and dinner. As always unless you come just as the open up for dinner is expect to wait to be seated. It took about 20 minutes to be seated for dinner today. Once seated they were pretty fast with asking us what we wanted to eat. Miso soup is a comforting start - umami flavors and tofu in a warm broth. This was followed with a green salad with the house dressing. The lettuce and vegetables were fresh but the dressing is the start (you can buy bottles to use at home. We started with the ika (squid) as an appetizer. It's a hot August evening so unagi (eel) is always a good choice. The wife got the seabass (our favorite). All meals come with miso soup, salad, and white steamed rice. All were extremely tasty! The squid was fresh and had a nice snap (not rubbery). The seabass was buttery (perfect). The grilled unagi and sauce over steamed rice is just perfection on a summer evening. Though the prices are higher than before the pandemic , Ojiya is back to their pre pandemic food quality and service standards. All in all a five star experience. read more

Came here on date night at my girlfriend's recommendation. Hidden in a small little plaza dwarfed in size by a bowling alley, the place bravely displays SUSHI - Best in Town. If you judge by appearances, you may question this, but after dining here you won't. The place is on the small size, providing you the option of dining at a sushi bar or at a table. There were three talented sushi chefs, along with a full compliment of restaurant staff. We both ordered combination boxes, my girlfriend opting for Sashimi and Tempura, while I selected California Roll, Spicy Tuna and Teriyaki Chicken. Both orders came with rice and Miso Soup. Everything was delicious and I never wanted to stop eating. Service was excellent, friendly and attentive. Upon leaving the entire staff will thank you for dining with them. The quality is decent and they don't overpack the sushi with rice (if that's important to you). I went for dinner so I didn't get to check out the lunch options. An updated review is looong overdue. Ojiya has been a family staple. This is our go to spot when we want miso sea bass. My go to order is their three item combo- chicken teriyaki (basic I know but I always pack it for lunch), miso sea bass (because it's absolute perfection), and their crunch roll (no avocado since I tend to eat it for dinner and detest brown avocado). So yes, I basically order this huge meal to spread it out into three meals. The up charge for the miso sea bass is worth it! Don't even think twice. The sea bass is packed with flavor and melts in your mouth. My go to salad dressing is their miso, it's pretty darn good. Service has improved a ton, though they do get busy so I tend to get there right at opening. I love that I still see the same servers from when I first came here a little over ten years ago. Favorite sushi spot in Chino! Cozy atmosphere with kind staff. The wait is always long during prime dining time, so I recommend either coming early or closer to closing. My go to is the sushi boat. Generous portion sizes and can easily feed 2-3! I made the mistake once of swapping the chicken teriyaki with white meat. The chicken ended up being very tough and dry. This Japanese restaurant is surprisingly very good. They are located in a strip mall with free parking. I think you need to come early to avoid waiting in a line. I ordered the chirashi deluxe bowl. It was so fresh, so good. The server lady was very patient with our huge group. We had about ten people or so, celebrating a birthday. I think she gave the birthday person a free dessert! This place is such a gem. We came here on Sunday night around 6pm to celebrate my birthday. Luckily, we were seated right away as a party of 4. I had heard about the long lines here and since they don't take reservations on weekends, we anticipated somewhat of a wait. We ordered a huge spread of different appetizers, nigiri, and rolls. Everything was delicious, the fresh was extremely fresh, and they use quality ingredients you can taste. Our spread: Nigiri included salmon, yellowtail, amberjack, japanese scallop, and sweet shrimp. Appetizers we ordered agedashi tofu, fried squid legs, pork cheek (daily special), and stuffed jalapenos. Our rolls included a crunch roll and lobster roll. Service was quick and attentive. I arrived at Ojiya on a weekday (1:20PM). Customers write name on a list and wait to be called for a table. I waited 5 minutes and 48 seconds to be seated. The waitress is cordial, but the elderly lady appeared distracted. She never offered spoons for the miso soup or straws for the drinks. I ordered the Tonkatsu Curry ($16.95) and Salmon Roll ($6.95). The meal included miso soup and a small salad. The miso soup arrived 2 minutes and 30 seconds in. I was offered no spoon, and the waitress immediately vanished before I could speak. Regardless, when the soup cooled, I sipped from the bowl. Tasty. The miso soup tastes fresh and hot. Four minutes in... the Salmon Roll arrived. The Salmon Roll are the size of ice cubes wrapped in chewy seaweed. I barely tasted the tiny bits of fresh salmon. I immediately regret ordering it. In addition, the salad resembled every other generic Japanese restaurant salad. Its yellow leaves were off-putting. The Tonkatsu Curry arrived in 20 minutes. As mentioned prior, the Tonkatsu Curry is tasty. Fluffy rice, juicy tonkatsu, and thick curry created a delicious dish. The Tonkatsu Curry is large and satisfying. The ambiance is adequate. It's loud from the chatting customers, so I couldn't hear the quiet music. The waiting area is stuffy while the main dining area is cold. The decor is creative with tiny roofs hanging above tables. Overall, ambiance and service were adequate. The Salmon Roll is tiny and chewy. But Ojiya serves delicious curry. 3.5/5 read more

I know today's prices and food qualify aren't the same as before, but last night almost everything we ordered were below par as comparison to last time we went to ojiya which wasn't that long ago. For starters, the salmon sashimi looked like scraps. Every piece was falling apart and some were stuck together. Thin and sad looking. The amaebi(sweet shrimps) didn't taste fresh and lack of taste. Unagi(fresh water eel) had no crunch and very little taste as well. Yes, I cleaned my palette every time before eating another dish with ginger slices. Still no help at all. Even the bento's beef and chicken teriyaki slices were sad and way worse than before. Bottom line, no wonder there weren't any waiting though we walked in at 7ish on a Saturday night. I mean it when I say ojiya has some of the highest quality fish I've ever tasted... and I see now why you need to get there right when they open to get lucky with a seat. The staff are quick to serve and always follow up, and I'm not normally a sushi bar type of person but with this place, the sushi chefs are so friendly and talkative you have to sit up there and interact, it makes the whole experience so much better! The place itself is decently low lit, if you get bigger tables you could be under what looks like a small hut of some sort, and it has to tie in with the restaurants traditional ways. There aren't too many "specialty roll" choices, but there's a lot of other dinner options to choose from which definitely fills in that gap. The service we received was absolutely unacceptable. I haven't received this type of service in a very long time, especially from a Japanese restaurant. After the food arrived, we've asked for utensils 3 times before any server can get us the right utensils and napkins to eat. For the 1 hour we were there, no one bother to stop by our table to check or refill water. It was not a busy day with multiple open tables and 6 servers. The food was alright but the quality of the chirashi bowl dropped quite a lot compared to themselves 2 years ago. The fish was not as fresh and the sushi rice was also not well made. The only redeeming part is the seabass in the combination box is still good, but the price definitely increased by a lot. They used to be my top Japanese restaurant around here, but now I would rather go to other sushi restaurants to receive better food and service.
