I eat here fairly regularly and the food is always good and the service has always been good to excellent. Maybe the food is geared toward the less adventurous palate but that's what I expect here and it's fine with me. If I want something "more" I know to go somewhere else and prepare to pay for it. In the past, this place has been good... Not great, but consistently good. Today, I had only what I can describe as stale sushi, I didn't know sushi could taste stale, but it did. I had the Jackson roll. The shrimp in the roll was rubbery and flavorless along with the rest of the ingredients. The vegetable tempura also was stale and greasy. This very disappointing meal, including tip, came to $30.00 what a waste of money! I told the waitress, but nothing other than to ask my why, why what? I didn't prepare it or serve it! Sushi is my parents' favorite food, so I grew up with it, frequenting restaurants in LA and SF over the years. I realize different chefs make things differently, but this one takes the prize. Just tonight, a friend ordered Chirashi (sashimi slices on top of a bowl of rice) and it was really an embarrassment. 12 pieces of fish, sliced paper thin, of only 3 varieties, and one of the three is cooked shrimp. I was so embarrassed that I suggested the restaurant to our friends from the Bay Area. I had a sashimi combination. My 6 pieces of fish weigh more than my friend's 12 pieces of sashimi on her Chirashi, but they were terribly cut. They were cut in cubes instead of slices, so they were hard to chew. I think if the restaurant runs out of fish, the chef should be upfront and ask us to order something else. In my 50+ years, I have to say this is absolutely the worst Japanese restaurant I've been to, and I've been to, conservatively speaking, probably over 200 of them. read more

We ate at this restaurant with myself, my husband, and our 3 kids. We ordered both sushi and the bento box. The Bento boxes are small and pricey and the standalone sushi is just so, so. I do have to say that the service was HORRIBLE. They had a handful of waitresses that all seemed to be talking and not working. You can get better sushi at the Safeway across the parking lot. And it won't cost you half as much. I ordered the zigzag temaki roll, which the menu said had soft shell crab and avocado. What I received looked and tasted more like someone had vomited half a cup of mayo into some rice, threw a few chunks of detritus in for good measure, and rolled it in soy wrap. I also ordered an Ichiban roll which was to have a variety of fish, but the thing was so drenched in heavy sauce that I couldn't taste any fish at all. A waste of $20 that left me pretty irritated- I could have gotten a sandwich at Togos and been far happier, and then filled my gas tank for that price. I honestly love Oko Sushi, I've been coming here for 7+ years once or twice each month. The staff is amazing and the service is fast. I wouldn't exactly call the sushi exceptional or anything special, but the sushi is very good and not very expensive. If you're looking for a large selection of rare fish, this may not be the place for you. But, if you're just looking for a casual lunch spot, a romantic date, or anything in between Oko Sushi is the place to go. Now I am 12 so maybe I just like the non-raw sushi options, but this place is very kid friendly. There are plenty of things kids will definitely like ( I've been coming since I was 4-5) Chicken and Rice, soup, California rolls, you name it! There are also raw options which I don't like as much but are still delicious. 10/10 would recommend as a long time customer. read more

This was my second time at oko and it was a good repeat. Not the absolute best sushi I've had but there's a ton of wonderful places that are near me. I had the happy family roll and the catalina roll. Both were good and filling. It's a little pricy but we had good service during our lunch even with a seven week baby in tow. I ordered The lemon dream roll. It's supposed to have spicy crab and tempura shrimp in the middle but I subbed and paid more for spicy tuna....I'm not sure If you can tell but there is barely any tuna in the middle considering it was $2 extra. It's a miracle that Amador county has a restaurant like this. This is not the greatest sushi place in the world, I'm not naive. But considering the area, it's some of the best food you're going to get. People from the Bay Area might be a little disappointed if they happen to be used to fresher fish and more variety, but this is Gold Country, and this IS variety. The facilities themselves are clean and neat. The wait staff is so-so, there is room for improvement, but I've never been treated poorly. They can be forgetful, at times, and it seems to me as though they only hire introverts, so don't go there if you're looking to chat up the chef. I've seen better portion sizes, but what they offer still manages to fill me up just fine. Very happy to have a place like this in an otherwise fairly culturally deficit area. read more

We liked the food at Oko Sushi and Teriyaki over several visits, and our last visit was also very good. Of 4 bento boxes (lunches), all in our party liked their food. My son and I had the Beef Teriyaki; this rib eye was tasty and delicious, and plenty of it. The other 2 entrees, chicken and tempura, were also enjoyed. I like the option to select a side from 4 choices, I like the tempura best. Not a conoissuer of sushi, so can't comment on that. Service was quite good, including our waitress promptly accommodating special requests. I would be very skeptical of people claiming they had insects in or near their food; sounds like malicious falsehoods to me. I was really impressed by the good value of all the meals we had, and we'll be returning as soon as possible. read more

I was here in November 2013. The waitress answered all our questions, very friendly service. Food was very fresh and tasted great. I was surprised there was a sushi restaurant in the area and glad I stopped in. Being from Napa CA the prices were great for the amount of food you got. Oko sushi is a complex place to rate. On one hand, the bento boxes are great and the sushi rolls that are good, are absolutely mouthwatering (Argonaut Roll and Lemon Dream Roll are a MUST), but I've noticed out of the multiple times I've been there and out of the variety of rolls that I've tried, that a majority of their rolls taste very similar. If they were to add a little more pizzaz to some of their rolls, I believe that they would most definitely deserve a better rating. read more

Been coming here for awhile. It keeps going down hill every time we go. Last experience we received frozen seaweed on the oki poki salad. Tried to tell them but the chef doesn't speak English so he just thought we didn't like it and put it down. I have to say for the foothills it is edible and it is the only sushi in Jackson. The miso soup was disgusting, I couldn't even eat it. The sushi rolls were okay but they were mostly rice, they had the most minute amount of fish. On their spicy tuna roll it looked like they spread the fish on top with a butter knife. The service was pretty good. I do not think my husband and I will be back, we would rather take a trip to the city and get good sushi. read more

First I will say that this sushi cannot compare to San Francisco/Seattle/big city sushi -- don't even try. I judge it for what it is -- and where it is. I went there with my husband and two kids and it was a nice atmosphere, excellent service, and we really enjoyed ourselves. My kids split the orange chicken dinner box and it was huge -- more than enough for the two of them. The orange chicken was really good. We ordered the Jackson, Ichiban, and Rocky III rolls and, unfortunately, all three came with spicy mayo (which was really just thousand island dressing all over the roll). Yikes. I would order the spicy mayo on the side or not at all next time. Otherwise, we will be back and trying some sushi as well as the rolls next time. read more

My family absolutely loves Oko Sushi. Sure, it's the only Japanese restaurant in the area, but the food is always fresh and delicious. In the dozens of times I've ordered in, or have taken out, it's been very good. I've been to many sushi restaurants in the valley, and other areas, but this place is like home. It's very clean, has a comfortable atmosphere, excellent service, and the friendliest staff. You must try it! I'm a vegan, but the best roll on the menu is the Ichiban 2. read more
