This place has been wonderful from the beginning when they were located in Piermont. My fiancé and I say this is the best restaurant we've been to for the check we pay. Yes it's cash only and you do not have an intimate dinner with your significant other but you enjoy the food because it's comparable if not better than restaurants in the city. It's one of the only restaurants we go to in Bergen County because it never disappoints and it's worth every penny. We love Olar and we will continue to go back every time. read more

Love the new location. Not sure what the issue was with the few negative reviews, but for us the service was perfect, entire staff was was courteous and extremely helpful. The food was excellent and very tasty. If anything, I found it tastier than what I remembered from the last time I visit them when they were in their old location in Piedmont. Great service,inviting atmosphere,food good. Stopped in on a Sunday night. No where in the entire restaurant does it say cash only, no website either. I Understand adding additional 3% charges to credit card payments, and would've been happy to do that .we did Not have cash for the almost $200 bill , not including the tip . I needed to go to their convenient ATM machine after dinner and pay a three dollar service fee. I would have much preferred the 3% additional charge and the 800 point addition to my JetBlue card. I like having the option to use a credit card. Didn't much care for personal size mushroom pizza , tasted burnt, for $23. Burrata app, was just okay. Had to hang out at bar for 50 minutes before being seated for our reservation. Obviously ordered drinks to occupy ourselves, as well as some olives. When we were finally seated, the owner said the bar was on him. Time to pay the bill, and he covered the olives. Go somewhere else if you're on a schedule. Food was fine. I used to dine at the old location & was happy to see the pandemic didn't close them & they actually moved into a bigger space! We didn't make a reservation and it was 6pm-the start of prime time-but the hostess was very cordial and accommodating and we had no problem sitting in the bar area. The only problem we had is that it took quite some time for the bartender to actually come and take a drink order. We were the only ones in the sitting area, and there were three people at the bar. No problem, she eventually took our order. It happens. But within the hour when the sitting area was filled, I heard complaint after complaint of the patrons on either side of us trying to get her attention as they have been waiting for over 15 minutes and still hadn't been approached for a drink order. By this time, it had grown quite loud, which generally isn't a problem for me, but it was the choice of music they played I really don't feel hard/classic rock is fitting for the type of restaurant & it's clientele. Then comes the food. We just ordered a few appetizers, and the octopus was exquisite as always! But although the mussels were lovely and meaty, there was minimal flavor to them. A bit disappointing. Perhaps a bit of acid or something to make the broth a bit more flavorful. But the kicker to my whole experience is when we went to pay the bill, and it was told to us that it was cash only. There was no notice on the door, no notice on the hostess stand, no mention of it by the hostess nor the bartender/server, and not a mention of it on the menu as well. It was a bit shocking and embarrassing when I went to pay with a card. Perhaps if I was aware of their policy beforehand, I could have brushed off the service & food, & it would have been a better experience. read more

I would understand if I walked in without a reservation but I called the same day and the person who took my reservation did not bother telling me. If I had known I would've planned accordingly but instead had to pay a $3 atm fee with them and another fee with my bank. Those fees I was charged would've went to my server instead. read more

Called to make reservations for a party of six (6) for my wife's birthday. Understandably, was informed that I could not make reservations for a Saturday evening until Tuesday of that week starting at 2:30PM. As requested, I called at 3:00PM on the prior Tuesday and successfully made a reservation for a Saturday evening at 7:00PM. Arrived five (5) minutes prior to the reservation and was told by the hostess that "It will be a few minutes ... we are getting the table ready for you." Well, a wait of ten (10) minutes turned into twenty (20) minutes with other parties, of the same size and arriving after us, being seated during our wait. We asked the hostess for an update and to which she said unfortunately the party at our slated table arrived late which is the reason why our table is not ready yet. The hostess said we can get comfortable at the bar if we want to "purchase" some drinks. A "good" restaurant would compliment them to you for the inconvenience they caused and for their error of overbooking. Well, guess what (?) our wait went to 55 minutes at which point we advised the host that we were leaving (btw, no apology). We went to another restaurant in the local vicinity at 8:00PM and the food was absolutely delicious and we got to eat outside on a beautiful evening instead this cramped environment. Unfortunately, I would never, never refer this restaurant to anyone in the Northern Valley or Southern Rockland County area. In addition, the parking is a horrible and when the restaurant is busy, you risk the possibility of being towed when you have to park on the private properties of other businesses in the rear of the building. I feel bad that I have to write this review, but I am trying to save someone else from having the same negative experience that we all did. It is unfortunate that the owner is so rude to what could be a loyal customer. This owner communicated that because he owns the restaurant he literally can be an "asshole" (his words) to me. This is the term he used when I provided him feedback on his demeanor and how he could've communicated differently to a customer choosing to eat there on a Friday night. It is upsetting that he has loyal and well meaning employees with a pleasant demeanor yet believes that because he owns the restaurant he can speak to customers rudely, curse, and become irate. It appears that his employees, who mostly happen to be Latino/a, are afraid of him and tolerate this disrespect. I do hope that he reflects on his disposition, although it seems unlikely that he will. If he lacks emotional intelligence, I do wonder why he chooses to be the maître d'. When his friends move out of the area and no longer are customers at the restaurant, I wonder how likely he will be able to sustain this business long-term. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to this restaurant and would have been a regular customer otherwise. Also, the owner's snarky response to another customer's 1-star review clearly illustrates my point. The msg says call after 1pm for a same-day reservation. One day I called at 1:30pm and they said they were full. Another day I kept calling from 1pm on and no one ever answers, only the recording to call after 1pm. How about use an online reservation service? They do not accept credit cards, and do not have a bar. read more

What a terrible experience. Avoid this place. The food is just average at best. I found out they are "cash only" business as we got the check at the end. I honestly don't know how to review this place. The food is spectacular. Everything else about the place is a complete miss. First, the reservation system is ridiculous. You have to call after 1 pm for a reservation for that day only. It literally took me 25 calls to finally get through. The owners could not be more stand off as they have an attitude like they are doing you a favor by dining there. The server was complete devoid of any personality and again it's like he was bothered by the fact we were there. Ok now the best part. They only take cash. I usually don't write reviews of businesses, but I must step into this one. I was dining last night at Olar with my husband and we were sitting next to Carlos V. How do I know this? Because at the end when he and his party were leaving I heard his name called by one of his friends and I heard him say he's leaving a bad review after talking to the owner at the end of his meal. First, before I get into Carlos' rant, let me say that the food and vibe at Olar is like no other. A+++++ and beyond. I overheard Carlos say numerous times to his server that everything was top notch and delicious throughout his meal. Now here is where Carlos' attitude started spinning out of control like Linda Blairs head in the Exorcist. When Carlos got his check the server informed him it was cash only, and thats what Carlos didn't quite comprehend. Carlos confronted the owner and the owner simply answered his question without attitude, (the owner did not go off on Carlos) and it was Carlos that had the attitude. That said, it was Carlos that embarrassed himself in front of his friends. Funny thing is that he paid in cash, so what's the big deal. Well, with that said, me and the husband will be going back for more delicious food and service as soon as we can. Good job OLAR. read more

Food was very good. What left a bad taste in my mouth was that the restaurant does not inform customers that it doesn't take credit cards. They say nothing when you make the reservation. There is no sign on the door. No notice on the menu. And the waiter says nothing. So when you find out, you've already finished your meal and you have little choice but to avail yourself of the in-house ATM machine, which automatically generates two transactions, one a balance inquiry, the other an actual withdrawal. That generates two $2.50 fees. In addition there's a $3.00 banking fee. So a $120.00 withdrawal costs $8.00. Maybe not much if you can afford to spend $120 on a dinner for two, but why not just raise prices or add on a 3% surcharge for people who want to use a credit card. And most importantly, why not clearly communicate this policy up front? read more

But the food isn't the worst part of this experience. While making our pizza one of the ellen making food was slicing meat he ate one of the slices. This is clearly a health violation.
