Amazing food! It's nice to do everything sharing-style so you get to try different dishes. Loved loved loved our first experience here. Service (especially Stella) was friendly and attentive. Mercato in Tappan, NY rates a five because their pies are done to perfection with a sauce that is tangy and sweet on a Neapolitan crust that is never burnt. I won't call it the best because there is paisan greatness on every corner in this part of the world but it was a local go-to joint when I lived in the area. A recent visit confirms that nothing has changed. So if you like your pizza slathered in venison and roadkill there's always Cheyenne, if you're a fan of the classics, try Mercato. 4.5 stars My family and I decided to order takeout from Mercato Roman Pizza the other night and were glad that we did. The menu was limited, but also very innovative. We had been craving pizza, so we wound up ordering 3 of those, as well as some meatballs to start. When we arrived at the restaurant to gather our items, we were in awe of its cute, cozy nature. The wood-burning oven added a real warmth to the already adorable space, which was also BYOB. The ride back home was tough, as the smell of the food was extremely enticing. Once we arrived home, we immediately proceeded to fix ourselves plates of the yummy looking dishes. The Veal and Ricotta Meatballs were light, fluffy, and stuffed with ricotta cheese. They were served in a savory San Marzano tomato sauce that was perfect for dipping into with the included Sourdough Crostini. In the end, I was extra grateful for the red sauce, as our pizzas offered very little of it. The pies were made on extremely thin, crispy crusts, made of sourdough with lower carbs and gluten. The Truffle Potato variety was topped with thinly-sliced, Yukon potatoes, fresh rosemary, extra virgin olive oil, and truffled sottocenere cheese. The sottocenere was aromatic and flavorful, but the roasted rosemary sprigs really brought life to each slice. The Shrimp Scampi pie used an interesting cheese blend of Caciocavallo, Parmesano, and Pecorino. It was lightly kissed with what they called a "Tomato Mushroom Cloud" that was heavily garnished with garlic bread crumbs, which really made this a flavor powerhouse. Each slice was also topped with a large tiger shrimp, which were supposed to be marinated, but were actually plain and undercooked. I would have really loved this pizza best if the shrimp had been more cooked through. Instead, my favorite pie was the Prosciutto di Parma one, which was served at room temperature, likely to preserve the quality of the meat, which had been aged for 36 months. The tender, thinly-sliced prosciutto was draped over layers of fresh mozzarella, blistered tomatoes, and arugula. Aged balsamic vinegar had been drizzled over the top, but also managed to bake into the crust. That pizza was pure perfection! We were thrilled with everything that we ate and planned to go to Mercato to see how the pizza would differ when it was eaten live. I am sure the pizza would be gooier and cheesier, while the warm environment would provide a delightful environment to further enhance the culinary experience. read more

I do not know if it was just an off night as I have had quality food here before. Went there to order takeout so it would be fresh. Place was pretty dead so it should have not been a problem. There were problems from get go. Pizza and salad were made before they even started pasta order. When I got home, my pasta was like glue. Overcooked. Even worse, the shellfish in pasta was not fresh. Stop eating mediocre pizza and get to Mercato Roman Pizza where amazing awaits! The best way to describe Mercato's flatbread pizza is "artisanal," because their pizza is crafted, not slapped together like a typical "pie." We had the potato truffle pizza with béchamel sauce. First of all, the flatbread crust was incredible. Light, flaky, and thin but satisfying, with some substance to it, not like the cardboard thin crusts you've likely had to suffer through at some other local establishments. The truffle cheese and potatoes combined perfectly and were so decadent in the béchamel sauce. (See the picture posted with this review.) The potatoes were thin and delicate, I thought potatoes on pizza would be overkill, but no! It works, it just works, please do yourself a favor and experience this pizza. My wife had sangria, which I tasted. It was really well done and balanced. Not too sweet, not too boozy tasting, but still packed a good punch. Just the right amount of fruit and ice in the glass, not overloaded. We had a Caesar salad for two, it was excellent. The dressing tasted fresh and clearly had anchovy without tasting fishy or heavy. I would have preferred more croutons. We ended with Tiramisu. I was expecting the "heavy" or mousse-like Tiramisu that a lot of places serve. (To be honest, I have come to like the heavy stuff for what it is -- filling.) Instead, Mercato's light and airy Tiramisu allows the taste of the lady fingers to come through. It reminded me what good Tiramisu tastes like. It would have gone perfectly with an espresso or cappuccino, I will order one next time. (Yes! There will be a next time!) About price: Yeah, an 8-slice flatbread for two was $20 and the Caesar for two was $17. Sure, I could go to the Mountain House, for example, and pay 2/3 the price for their thin crust and whatever side salad. We more or less like Mountain House for what it is. But if you want better, high-end quality and taste, now you know where to get it. As for every other Average Joe's Pizzeria, with big floppy soggy crusts and fast-food grade toppings and sauce: You are perfect for toddler birthday parties, middle school dances, unsatisfying picnics, and hangover slices. We had the ricotta meatballs and roasted cauliflower as an app. Meatballs were good - alittle mild in flavor and different texture ( probably due to the ricotta) but very good. Tomato sauce was perfect - not too heavy and didn't overwhelm the meatball taste. Cauliflower was also tasty. We split a small pizza with half pepperoni and half sausage. It was delicious. I preferred the pepperoni and my husband preferred the sausage side. Even though they say the pepperoni is part of the diablo pizza - it's not super hot which is something I watch out for - it's just alittle spicy as pepperoni should be. Mercato is fantastic. The best artisanal/non-NY style pizza I've had in this area. The space is very cool. Minimalist but not cold. They have old black and white movies projected on a big screen. And the music is cool. It's lounge versions of well known pop songs. I had the sangria which is the best I've had anywhere. Not too sweet and not overloaded with fruit. For an appetizer my husband and I shared the large Caesar salad. It was so good. The dressing was balanced and not too garlicky. We ordered a truffle potato pinsa. Oh my goodness this pizza was so good. The toppings were excellent. The truffle flavor wasn't overpowering because they use a truffled cheese as opposed to truffle oil so the flavor is there but it doesn't smack you in the face. The crust was excellent. Someone in another review complained that the crusts are pre-baked. The server explained why they do it: the dough is wetter than most doughs and in order to get it cooked in a reasonable amount of time and to get it crisp, they must pre-bake it. Went in for lunch. Ordered two of the individual pizzas. The margarita and the mushroom. Although the crust was crispy throughout, it just tasted like eating bread with toppings. No taste of the special fermentation that is on the menu. The toppings were just flat in flavor. Tomatoes tasted like they were straight out of the can with no love put into it. The staff were friendly and attentive, the atmosphere was chill and inviting with pleasant music and old movies running on a projector, but most of all the food is amazing! Their crust is thin, crispy and light, and the choices of toppings are unique and high quality. We've tried the Brussels sprout, the truffle potato and the Diablo, and all were excellent. Their garlic "nots" are a fun starter showing off their dough some more, and the sauce for dipping it is delicious. Their sangria (we had the citrus elderflower) is refreshing and tasty.
