It had this fresh, almost elevated flavor that made everything even better. I was literally dipping every last bite like I didn't trust the plate not to disappear. But honestly, what made it even more special was the people. Every single staff member was so kind and welcoming, and the chef actually came out to talk with us. From the moment I walked up to the door I could tell this was a very different kind of Captain D's... 1.) anyone who frequents Captain D's knows they're not usually in the most desirable locations, and as such, the staff isn't always that fastidious about the outside appearance of the establishment. Not here. No trash rolling around in the parking lot, empty (rather than overflowing) trash cans, and a generally tidy parking lot. Good sign #1. 2.) anyone who frequents Captain D's knows when you open the door a wave of seafoody-antiseptic-like aroma HITS you in the face. Not here. It just smelled like a restaurant, not a seafood restaurant. I never imagine such a thing could be possible at a Captain D's. Great sign #2. 3.) anyone who frequents Captain D's knows the average employee is not is excited to be there, and it shows in the effort they put forth. Not here. These (clearly overwhelmingly high school) employees were on their game: I was greeted upon entry, folks were smiling, they were communicating clearly and politely with each other in front and behind the counter, the (young) manager was hustling just as much as the staff, and the dining area was clean. Fantastic sign #3. I actually enjoyed (rather than dreaded) waiting for my to-go order. The manager double-checked it before sending it out the door (a brilliant 1-second step that saves a mountain of potential issues on the back-end), and I was on my way. Everything was perfectly cooked, my meal was delicious, and I'm actually considering a special trip back through Lima in the coming months just so I can visit this particular Captain D's again. Y'all have something special here. Whether it's the training, the small-town solidarity, the youthful exuberance (LOTS of eager high school folks doing great work!), or just a general sense of pride in your jobs, Captain D's lucked out to get a crew like you.

Jolly Roger is located in Port Clinton right on Lake Erie; I was expecting something ordinary or just a bit dated and boy was I wrong. The building is very modern and clean from the outside, white and angular with big windows. Inside white walls, rough hewn wooden tables and just the right amount of decor makes for a modern seaside feel, casual but also classy. The setup is fast casual, you order and pay up front at the counter, get a number for your table and then get your own drink at the service station. The menu is understandably very heavy on fish and seafood with a couple of other items. While there are the expected fried fish meals, but also oysters, shrimp and salmon, salads and even some tacos. The reason I came was of course for the fried fish, I decided on the Perch and Chips, which is $18. I grabbed some water, hot sauce and lemon and settled onto a table. The meal was brought out fresh and hot by a food runner in a couple of minutes. The meal was 4 nice sized perch fillets on top of a generous portion of fresh waffle fried potatoes with a side of tarter sauce. The fish were excellent, fresh and perfectly fried with a nice crispy cornmeal crust around the delicately fish; moist with a slight sweetness and perfect texture. The waffle fries were exceptional, fried to a crisp outside and tasty inside; usually fries at a seafood place are an afterthought, here they actually are well worth getting and eating. Even the tarter sauce was very nice, nothing special but creamy with a nice pickle contrast to add a little extra flavor. Usually when I see a place that has been around this long and has great reviews I am a bit let down when I give them a try; Jolly Rogers Seafood House exceeded my expectations in almost every way. Although set up as a fast casual restaurant with a typical fried seafood menu, the actual restaurant feels more upscale and modern with a great inside and a very nice patio looking out onto Lake Erie. The food is not cutting edge, but it is expertly prepared and delicious. Prices are moderate with large portions for your money. Some of the best fried perch and waffle fries I have had. I will be back any time I am in the area, a very high recommendation as long as you are looking for fish or seafood, go and enjoy.
