What a treasure in Troy. Smith's Boathouse shoots for a more upscale feel and delivers. Fancy without being pretentious. Great location right along the river. Service was friendly and helpful. I was looking forward to the French onion soup and enjoyed it. It's a different take than I've had before, but still good. When I'm at new places I like to try to pick something I normally wouldn't order. So I skipped the pretzel and beer cheese in favor of the whipped ricotta small plate. It was spectacular. Finally made time to pop in for dinner--unfortunately it wasn't on Lobster Roll or Cluster Crab night (guess we will just have to return at least two more times lol). The dinning room is nice, low light and low music playing. It seemed to get a little smokey in there but it wasn't bothersome. Our server was so lovely! And another lady that was floating around checking on tables was very sweet and fun! We really struggled with our ordering and "locking it in"...therefore we ended up ordering what felt like half the menu. For appetizers, we got calamari and the baked crab dip. The calamari was pretty light and delicious. The crab dip was heavy and but had a great flavor. I wasn't a huge fan of the chips but it was great with the bread that came to our table. The bread basket came out steaming and the butter was amazing we had to ask for extra. The butter is whipped and has green onions in it. Hubby and daughter each got clam chowder--it was different from what they are used to (and they are both clam chowder connoisseurs) but they still thought it was very good--just thinner and a lot more meaty ingredients. Daughter loved the halibut with risotto. Hubby really enjoyed the boathouse burger--bacon jam was new for him but he loved it. Though the burger was messy--he definitely cleaned the plate. My seafood platter was pretty good, I ate the scallops and coconut shrimp first. Then came our next dilemma...dessert!! So we each got one! My friend hosted her welcome dinner here for her wedding weekend. They have a very large restaurant to accommodate large groups. We were seated in the back room and had quite a large party. They did a great job getting our food and drinks out in a timely manner and the staff was very kind. We had a select menu to choose from and so I decided on the salmon. It was divine! They did a wonderful job with this dish and I was quite pleased. The only reason I didn't finish my main was because I was planning to get dessert and I was not disappointed. When we travel we like to eat at local restaurants. Tonight we had a flawless dinner at Smith's Boathouse Restaurant in Troy, Ohio. It's "casual fine dining" where the ambiance is nice, relaxing, and comfortable. Lori was our server and she took wonderful care of us. We started with a tasty shareable appetizer of crab stuffed mushrooms. The house salads were a nice size with fresh greens and other vegetables. Laurie had the grilled salmon and I had the chef's special pan seared Great Lakes walleye. Both entrees were fantastic. And then for dessert we had a Maple Bourbon Cheesecake that was everything you'd want in a sweet treat. First visit for my birthday dinner & it was awful. $103.00 later we left & we went to Bella Sorella for a meal. The crab cakes tasted like bad fish. The smell was awful as well. Last night 2/17/25 we had my friends birthday a party of 5 we had the Filet which was simply perfect but we ordered lobster- both our lobster were raw and I eat a peace and spit the other peace out ( it was raw underneath and I didn't see it till I had the 2nd bit. I ended up getting food poisoning. The owner told me I would not get sick from that but at 1:00am I was violently sick . So I googled it and well it said I could get food poisoning. It had been some time since I have dined here. My friend and I decided to go recently for a lit of a splurge. We were promptly seated even though the place was busy. The waitress advised that our steak needed to be prepared medium since that is what the chef recommended, I insisted on medium rare for my steak. My steak was perfectly cooked and tender. My friend took the waitresses recommendation, and her steak was more on the well done side and tough. The asparagus was cold, but the potatoes were fabulous. The steak dinner was almost $50. Pretty good experience, but I spent $177 for 2 people, and I have a couple issues...... The after dinner butterscotch bourbon coffee was Luke warm. I prefer my coffee actually hot. Honestly, it was gross. The ribs were pretty average and definitely not worth $29. When we were ready to leave, we couldn't go because the waitress gave us a pen that wouldn't write. She vanished, and after a long wait, we found another server with a working pen. Also, I asked to have a bottle of salad dressing to bring home. Idk if she added it to my bill or not, but I didn't get it. Things I loved - French onion soup and salad with white French dressing. I also loved the guava mama. If I knew they were not going to bring me hot coffee, I would have just ordered another guava mama. The peanutbutter pie was excellent.....kinda tiny for the price....but excellent. Apparently you have to ask for your walleye to be deboned?? Food taste was great, I wanted to love it but every bite had bones they'd missed (only took 3 bites) Lost most of my appetite and started Nibbling on my dates fries. They comped my walleye but left the charge of $25 for 2 small scallops Service wasn't good or bad just meh, atmosphere was pretty nice. Comfortable seating, beautiful historic photos and art, but what will demand your attention first is the menu. This was our first visit and it took solid time to narrow the dining choices down below six. It was challenging. Our choices were Chicken Oscar and the Walleye Special. They each came with salads and we chose the house-made 'White French' dressing which our server expertly described as similar to traditional French dressing but slightly sweeter than Ranch and notes of Dijon mustard with the mayonnaise based dressing. It was delicious. Our entrees were outstanding; each served with Meyer lemon risotto and vegetables. The presentation of the courses was worthy of the food. Absolutely beautiful and perfectly prepared. I must admit I suffered some serious FOMO not indulging in the Caesar salad table service, although our boathouse salads with that fabulous dressing was great - cannot wait to indulge in the Caesar. We also enjoyed the cocktail menu. Starting with a sazerac and finishing with a Manhattan after dinner. This is a beautiful restaurant. The food is remarkable. What really stands out in this gem though is the service. Every single member of the staff we interacted with or even just walked by addressed us in a perfect level of congeniality. We had dinner there on March 26, 2025. Our service was great. Our server was actually awesome. My wife ordered muscles which came with absolutely no broth at all. It was like each individual muscle was squirted with something but nobody knew what it was. I ordered what was called chicken something which was basically chicken toast on an incredibly large piece of bread. It was tasteless at best. Ever since Larry sold the restaurant to his daughter, the quality of food has gone downhill drastically. Sadly, I think the boathouse will be out of business within a year. It's just sad to see. It used to be a great place with great quality. You could go to Coldwater Café on Wednesdays or any night of the week and spend $18 on mussels and they are about the best you will ever have. You spend $17 here and there's zero broth, and I'm not exaggerating the smallest mussels you've ever seen in your life in every one of them. They need to just stop pretending they are trying to serve seafood of any kind at all. It's about over for Boathouse. read more

We've been coming to Smith's for quite a few years, and just never reviewed it. Admittedly in at least 10 visits, I may have had one less than appealing meal, that said my most recent visit this past weekend was very enjoyable. Most everyone at the table had the crab cakes. A friend who comes from an area of the country where crab cakes are king said Smith's is the only place that makes a crab cake like they do from where he's from, and believe me, from this guy that's a compliment. I had the walleye, which was lightly breaded and fried perfectly, really really good. Wait staff is awesome, very attentive and always ready to help. Depending on where you sit, you might get a little better view but overall it's a great little place, no matter where you sit. read more

It was a perfect June evening and then it got even better. We met dear friends at Smiths'Boathouse and were seated on the deck overlooking the water with a view of sun drenched Troy in the distance. The breeze took two of our menus flying off the table and into the pond, but no worries. Our amiable server quickly replaced them with a sweet assurance that they were probably needing to be updated. Then onto our yummy cocktails (I went for the Strawberry Sangria) and the best calamari I have ever had. It comes with two dipping sauces, both spot on the flavor bullseye and quite different. Along with the joy of our friends company, we next had the delight of a table side salad preparation complete with extra anchovies. Brianna was a master and made sure we followed her progress each step of the way. I am pretty sure there would have been plate licking if we hadn't been out in public. Even the one dining companion who hadn't ordered a salad couldn't resist eating several forkfuls. Then entrees. The clam chowder was very creamy and had depth of flavor. My friend said his crab cake was delicious and the server said the chef who created it was from Maryland and insisted it be made with lots of crab, not lots of filling. And finally the truffle fries deserve a special mention. So, so good. (The leftovers were reheated the next day in my air fryer and still made me swoon). Only my husband's fish and chips were good, not exceptional. We lingered over coffee, too full to partake in dessert. Nice dinner, cute place! We started with the Maryland Crab cakes and crab stuffed mushrooms. The stuffed mushrooms were the best!!!! I cannot recommend the mushrooms enough and I do not even like mushrooms. The lemon garlic sauce and crabmeat on the mushrooms were heavenly! I ordered the Walleye which was really good, kind of a small portion but was mild flavored and served with vegetables, rice, and a mild sauce. My hubby got the scallops which were delicious but you only get three (McDonalds after?). My friend ordered the lobster tails which I would highly recommend. They were very delicious! For dessert we ordered the carrot cake and Highlander Grog cake. Both were good but Highlander was a little dry. The service was really good, we received prompt service, and courses were well timed. Had 5PM reservations, arrived 20 minutes early, had to wait "for 4;45PM reservations", no 4:45PM reservations showed up, lots of tables open. Menu unimpressive and overpriced. Walleye $32 for a small serving. Short Ribs the same. They nickel and dime you for extras. Served 3 small pieces of bread for two dinners, $5 for more. Asked for additional au jus for overcooked, tasteless ribs, was told it would be an extra charge. The area we sat in was cold, noisy and overcrowded, had to squeeze between seats to get to restroom. Small space heaters did nothing. Been here several times before but will rethink return. read more

Visited this establishment during a work trip. I ordered the Habanero Margarita, which had a great kick, and a mezcal cocktail, which was more on the mellow side. Ordered the crab dip for the table which came with house-made tortilla "chips"; tortillas cut in half and fried. The crab dip was decent for a crab dip in the Midwest, but it was just a lot of baked cheese on top of a crab base. Ordered the day's special - shrimp tacos. The shrimp was fried and cut into strips, Japanese Katsu style and served with a gyoza-like sauce. Overall decent food but the fried items were left in the fryolator a little too long, the oil from the fried items tasted well used, and the prices were a bit on the higher side- charged New England seafood prices in a Midwest location. 3/5 stars, would attend a cocktail hour but pass on the food. read more

Impeccable service, food, and drinks. My wife and I had reservations with another couple. Upon arrival we were kindly greeted and immediately seated. Our waitress made her first visit promptly and asked if we wanted to enjoy a cocktail and proceeded to describe several special drinks they had for the evening. One was a peach cobbler sangria and the other was a cilantro and Serrano pepper infused vodka bloody mary. My wife and I opted for the bloody marys and our friends got a peach cobbler sangria and an apple bourbon cocktail whose name I do not recall. All of the cocktails were amazing. Made perfectly and no skimping on the alcohol content. We also ordered and enjoyed the crab dip appetizer and the beer cheese appetizer, both of which were huge portions and tasty. During this time we got more cocktails - a gin raspberry bramble and the bee's knees - nothing of which were delicious. We placed our entree orders. My wife got some French Onion soup and the scallops. I ordered the NY strip. The dinners were perfectly proportioned and prepared. My friend and I got the Caesar salad prepared table side and it was the absolute best Caesar salad either if is ever had. We were all very impressed and agreed this is a new favorite restaurant. I've had Smiths' bookmarked for a few months and we were finally in the area. The inside is huge so there was no issue getting a table. We had the option of sitting inside or outside. When the weather is better, I would love to go back and sit outside. The food was great. We started with the crab cakes. They are good sized and come with a yummy sauce. Then we received our salads with the house dressing. They call it a 'white French' but it's nothing like a French. It is creamy like a ranch but tastier. The salad is a good mix of lettuce types and the croutons are homemade. None of the hard, bagged ones. There were also soft rolls. I ordered the salmon with risotto and asparagus. The salmon had a honey orange glaze. Not too heavy and the salmon was cooked perfectly. The risotto was soooo good. I could eat more of that. I highly recommend going. The service was great and the owner stopped by each table to check on things. Really nice man and he seems like he really cares about his customers. Support local businesses. read more

6 of us again had dinner here. It was not the same experience that we've had before. 3 of us were given older menus and some dishes are replaced with others. For example, clams and muscles are no longer on the menu. Sniff, sniff. I ordered crab cakes and a burger cooked medium with a baked potato. The burger was well done and I sent it back, the second burger was also well done. I sent it back too. The crab cakes were excellent, the potato was good. My wife had a Boathouse original char-broiled flank steak with risotto. It had a sauce reminiscent of A1 and it overpowered the plate. My son ordered the seafood basket and risotto. The seafood was breaded and fried. He didn't get the risotto. My daughter in law had chicken primavera which she said was bland. She asked for and did not get a refill on her drink. The kids had chicken strips and fries which were very good. We had to ask a bus boy to send our waitress to our table to get a second glass of wine and beer. In defense of the Boathouse, they took $75.00 off the bill and removed my burgers. Because my previous experiences were so positive I'll try Boathouse again. But it might be a while. 6 tonight for dinner at the Boathouse. This place is one of the reasons to travel to Troy for dinner. I tried the burger tonight. It's seriously good! I'd put this burger easily in the top 10 burgers in the Dayton area! Still 5 outta 5! Ate dinner here tonight. I had mussels and my wife had the salmon. Now, I've eaten mussels all over North America and I know a good, a so-so and a bad batch of mussels. These were over the top delicious! They are served in a butter/lemon/wine sauce that was something I've not seen before. It also has sautéed spinach and mushrooms giving my sauce dipping an extra nice touch. My wife enjoyed the salmon with potatoes al gratin. She said the salmon was cooked perfect and the taters had a bit of browning, just right. We each had wine and it was a nice size pour.
