We had a wonderful meal there but what really stood out was the way Jasmine, the Maitre de treated us. First I reserved dinner thru open table and in error put in 7:30 AM. When I was notified that we missed the reservation I called and Jasmine couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. This is one of the best restaurants we have eaten in the last year. Both indoor dining and deck were beautiful and we did 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners because quality was so good. My wife had duck with orange sauce and a beautiful vegetable. I had a fish stew that was an incredible mix of squid, scallops, shrimp, fish and was topped with a crisp gluten free cake. They went out of their way to make us gluten free french toast for breakfast, which was an off the menu treat.Drinks were perfect.Wait staff was as good as any place we have eaten in the world. We stumble upon this place trying to escape the country music at the bar next door. Our server's name was Ray. We asked him for recommendations on the wine, the entree and the dessert. He nailed it every time. We had the sea bass for dinner and it was so delicious we cleaned our plates, seriously wanted to lick my plate. We had chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream and it was also fantastic. All this eating while pleasant live piano music was in the background. Outstanding. We thought we would be disappointed because the main restaurant is under construction but the Canoe and Kayak is very intimate and the food is still fantastic. The best restaurant on Captiva. No question! Wife and I dined here on our last night. We were very pleasantly surprised and wished we had tried it sooner. Everything was outstanding starting with the herbed olive oil and fresh bread. Caesar salad was light crisp and fresh. I opted for the lobster spaghetti...killer! Well, I messed up my reservation time on Valentines Day, no less. The front of the house people were awesome. So nice when I was so embarrassed! They worked us into the schedule and the food was great. As great as it was, the service was just as good- and on a night where the restaurant was never slow. I have been to the Old Captiva House a couple times and have really enjoyed my meal. The baked brie appetizer is good and unique. For dinner I order the filet mignon and it is tasty and cooked to order. The service is always spot on and very attentive. They also have a piano player playing beautiful music in the background. The music gives the restaurant a really nice vibe. For dessert, I had what was supposed to be a lava cake but was pretty much cooked all the way though, so there wasn't so much "lava." Also, make sure you check the sunset time before making your reservation because the beach in front of the restaurant is the perfect place to catch the sunset. The parking situation is kind of a mess here, so make sure you were shoes that you can walk a bit in over stones, cobblestone, sandy dirt and maybe uphill (this tip is mainly for the ladies.) I have been here a couple times and would definitely come back - it's a nice restaurant. read more

Best dinner ever, We enjoyed the old Florida beach decor, casual but upscale. Food was amazing - really enjoyed the Fresh sushi. The Florida roll was so fresh & tasty, beautifully presented along with a flower. I've never had this combination, a hit. Followed by lobster & crabbed topped scallops. Got the small which was 2 large grilled scallops topped with crab & lobster, topped with light lemon sauce. A+. Meat lovers will enjoy the filet, served with mashed potatoes & fresh veggie medley. We didn't stay at Tween Waters but went for a special occasion dinner. The food and drinks were expensive and unremarkable. The service was less than adequate for an expensive restaurant. The waiter was pleasant enough but knew practically nothing about the menu and had to run back and forth to answer pretty basic questions. The worst part was the lame crab races in the bar. This should have been a fun activity. Instead, the presenter was crude and rude. He turned an overprices, barely adequate dinner into a really unpleasant evening. Don't go here! read more

Immediately server wanted to take our order-before we had even looked at menu-staff hovered around asking if we had finished when clearly we were still eating, we were out of there within an hour. For an expensive romantic dinner-it was only expensive. food is very good but felt we could not enjoy it. Server missed out by not offering additional wine, desserts, coffee. oh well. We came here for a 10th anniversary dinner because the reviews said the views were good for sunset dining. While true, our view was mildly obstructed as the 'Tween Waters Inn and the vestibule to the Old Captiva House, as well as a row of parking, were all in front of the windows of the front room. Still, the sunset view was enjoyable (how can you not enjoy the reds, oranges, and yellows of the setting sun over the water, especially with a dramatic, almost stormy sky providing just enough cloud cover to keep the view interesting?), the service was attentive without being overbearing, the food was tasty, and the piano player provided a soundtrack of old standards, Broadway favorites, and recognizable pop tunes. We definitely recommend the Captiva House, and imagine it is insanely crowded in season. read more

A little pricey but very delicious and worth it if you are celebrating a special occasion and looking for something different from the come as you are, flip flops, experience in Captiva. The sunset views boasted in the restaurant's website are extremely hard to come by as there are only a few small tables up in the front of the restaurant and the view from the rest of the rather long room is virtually non-existent. We tried the escargot which were absolutely delicious and the pompano piccata which was very tasty but collided somewhat with the risotto it was served over. read more

My parents just bought a condo in fort Myers and on a recent visit we drove out to captiva to have dinner at the Old Captiva House. I loved every part of it. Drinks were tasty, and water was refilled often. Dinner was not overwhelming where portions were concerned but they were delicious (we had a crab bisque, the watermelon and goat cheese salad, the Gorgonzola steak salad and the lobster ravioli ~ all were wonderful). Service was attentive and helpful. The sunset and ambiance were unrivaled. Lastly, the gentleman playing a musical theatre medley on the piano was amazing. I decided based on that I need to change my career goals to be able to afford someone playing piano at all of my meals! It's not cheap, but not overly expensive either. You get what you pay for ~ and it was worth it! read more

Dined here Christmas Day (party of 9) and we were very disappointed. We've been dining here for 30 years, and dined at the Christmas buffet for 10 years except for last year when they were closed for remodeling. We have always enjoyed it and we're glad it was going to be open this year again for Christmas. But- it was not the same as years past - the buffet did not have as many selections, and many of the selections were just mediocre. The normal cheese and fruit display lacked fruit and their Brie cheese - which have been a staple. It was not inexpensive for this group - $670- so I expected more. After 30 years - we won't be going back. So sad.... read more

This place needs a current review based on the older dates of prior ones I read. I am more than happy to do it. Definitely one of the best overall meals I've ever had and my wife felt the same about hers. I enjoyed a fresh and flavorful Caribbean grilled grouper and shrimp entree and she had an eggplant over pasta. I can't say enough about the flavors of the fish, shrimp and perfectly cooked coconut rice. The presentation, and even the carrots and asparagus that accompanied the main course made it over the top. I contemplated licking my plate, but cooler heads prevailed. Wine was great and so was desert. It's a bit pricey but it's white cloth with a piano player to boot. We only spent about $20 more than on our dining experiences the 2 prior nights at two other Captiva long standing establishments and neither was close to this. read more

Our party of 6 dined there on Monday night. We had a table with a great view of the beach. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The food presentation was worthy of the Food Network as was the taste and quality. We ordered the watermelon goat cheese appetizer, the sea bass, the grouper, the eggplant and the red snapper entrees in our group. All dishes were cooked to perfection with a wonderful blend of spice and flavor. We ordered the marble cheesecake and carrot cake to share for dessert. Surprisingly the pieces were large enough for our group to each get several bites of each. Both desserts were the perfect ending to the meal. I strongly recommend this restaurant especially since most of the more causal restaurants on the island are almost the same price without the class and ambiance. read more

The staff was pleasant and there was a charming piano player playing during our meal. The meal itself was mediocre at best. I ordered the surf and turf. The lobster tail was so over cooked it was dried out with no flavor, and the filet was so under cooked it was raw. With the looks of this place I expected better food. We had another restaurant fail us so we called up Old Captiva House in a pinch to make a reservation at the height of dining hours. We enjoyed the cute old-Florida vibe of this restaurant complete with a piano player. Food was good but not as good as some of the similarly priced locations we tried (sunset grille/mad hatter). They do have a full bar and the mixed drinks were fine. There is a nice view of the water/sunset if you come early enough. Apparently they have crab races next door but we didn't check them out. The small scallops plate and the seafood carbonara were the popular group items, with the grouper and new york strip being okay but not great. We wanted to take our parents out for a nice thank you dinner on the last night of vacation and this place was a decent choice but none of us left feeling it was an outstanding meal. It is certainly better than the other options slightly north (rc otter, bubble room, key lime bistro) but not as good as some of the restaurants located closer to sanibel. read more

Visited one day after the renovation reopening, and loved it!! Atmosphere is very beachy, airy, and open. Food was amazing - the wedge salad had very high quality bleu cheese, staff was friendly and attentive. And the Painkiller cocktail - highly recommend!
