Upon entering there is a Light up display menu on your left with all the fixins. Proceed to counter (menus in smaller font to assist you) to order your meal. There is a bbq sauce and fountain drink station with 4 sauces to choose from. The four sauces are: classic, piedmont, gold mustard bbq, and then a hot beaver bbq sauce. I travel to Canton now more frequently and been a hobby to try places around where I stay. This is the first time I tried this place. I must admit that it was a surprise. I was greeted promptly when I walked in. I didn't feel rush when i was ordering and the lady that gave me my food has the most pleasant smile, so that was a plus. I ordered rib combos The Texas and it was good, better than the Mission. The brisket was very juicy and tender, not too lean and not too fatty either. The slabs of barbq ribs tho was a little hard but nonetheless good, I have had better. Sides were corn bread (loved it), fries (didn't taste like it was newly fried) and mashed potatoes (loved it too). Four stars rating because I know, I will be back and maybe stick with brisket. Wow... This amazing little local BBQ joint located in a strip plaza was absolutely delicious. I had a brisket platter with the beans and hush puppies. The beef was nice and tender and there's a choice of 4 different sauces from different regions in the Carolinas. Baked beans are loaded with brisket too making them very tasty. My favorite is Dickey's in Medina, but since I moved back to the Canton area it's a toss up between Angry BBQ and Old Carolina. The mac n cheese was definitely cheesy with some light bread crumbs on the top. The ribs were decent. Out of the 5 ribs I got, one was juicy and meaty. The other pieces were dry on the outside. Sick of the usual fast-food fare a friend and I followed our noses to Old Carolina. She's from the South and picky about bbq. We both agreed its good food. We went for lunch and were happy to see lunch specials and portions under $8. I got the pulled pork, fries and a drink for $7.39. She got pulled pork, garlic mashed and a drink. We went on a Wednesday so the daily special was chicken tenders. But why you'd get chicken tenders in a place that serves pulled pork and brisket I'll never know. The pulled pork is tender, moist and delicious. It really doesn't need sauce but I doused mine in the original bbq just because I could. It was sweet, smokey and delicious. My friend drown hers with the Original Gold, a mustard based sauce. The fries are skinny and plentiful. You are served a heaping portion I couldn't even begin to finish. My friend said her potatoes were dry but very garlicky. Maybe that's how they do potatoes in the Carolinas, no idea. To finish off our lunches we decided to share some banana pudding. Oh yeah, so we thought. It did not taste right. I don't know what was off exactly but it had a weird aftertaste that wasn't bananas or whip cream. I don't know. Will not be ordering that again. I love good BBQ but this was not. I had the ribs, chicken leg and thigh and a few wings plus a little Cole slaw. The ribs were the best of the 3 by far they were fairly moist but lacked the real smoke flavor. The chicken and wings were both dry and really lacked any flavor or smoke very disappointing. Girls night at the local BBQ joint! As we walked up to the restaurant I smelled that delicious smoky bbq and the air was filled with smoky goodness. Alas it was NOT old Carolina BBQ! This is a no frills place. You walk up to the counter and place your order. The cooks are directly behind the cashier. I ordered the pulled pork with fries. Moseyed over to the sauce collection. Seriously you really can't go wrong with any of the sauces. My favorite was the tangy honey mustard. My order was brought to our table within 5 minutes. The pulled pork was tender and flavorful. Two friends ordered the sliders and stuffed about 3 of those down in short order. The fries were a little over cooked. But dip those fries in the tangy BBQ sauce and they tasted ok. We stopped here for dinner on Sat night, the place was packed which was a good sign. Upon entry, there's a large menu posted on the wall so you have a chance to browse what to order before heading to the register. We decided to get the sampler platter which included a little bit of everything. Brisket, pulled pork, chopped chicken, sliced turkey, ribs, 2 sides and a piece of cornbread. More than enough for 2 hungry people. With two drinks, came to about $25.00 which wasn't bad at all. They also offer a rewards club app in which you rack up $1 per point and when you reach 100pts you get $10 off next visit. Overall, the BBQ meats were good. If I had to pick for the next time, I would probably just get the ribs or brisket. The chicken was a bit dry and I bit into a little bone, which I know happens but it still turned me off. The sides were just OK. We got the garlic mash and green beans. The green beans definitely needed more seasoning, it kinda tasted right out of the can with some beef cubes added in. If I had to compare this place to a major chain like Famous Daves, FD would win hands down. But for a small BBQ joint, this was pretty decent if you had a craving. read more

The food here is HORRIBLE. I should have been suspicious when the order arrived very fast--too fast to cook a meal. My girl and I ordered the Sampler Platter, knowing we could split all the dishes and still be full. It was delivered fast, about ten minutes sooner than promised, yet it all arrived lukewarm. Every last piece of meat was dry, dry, dry. No juiciness. None. I've had stuff out of the grocery cooler that was better. So here is a rundown of everything in it, from beginning to end: CORNBREAD--it wasn't cornbread, it was a muffin. It was light, crumbly, moist, and SWEET. It came with honey butter but, because apparently honey butter isn't enough, they doctored it with cinnamon and nutmeg. Disgusting. BANANA PUDDING: Underripe bananas and no wafers. 4-CHEESE MAC AND CHEESE: I don't know what cheeses they use for it, but I guarantee every one of them came out of a can. There was absolutely no difference between this mac and cheese and microwavable stuff you get in the meat cooler tucked in between the plastic tubs of meatloaf and mashed potatoes. It was gluey and there was no sense of a melding of four cheese flavors. It tasted like Kraft. No resemblance, NONE, to actual mac and cheese you get from a real barbecue joint. GARLIC SKIN-ON MASHED POTATOES: Well, there were little white chunks that were ostensibly garlic, but the taste of it was so mild that I can guarantee you they were using jarred minced garlic in water. The consistency? Grainy and not very cohesive. It was nothing but potatoes, jarred garlic, and water. No butter, no cream or half and half. It didn't even have POTATO flavor. It was like grits with old jarred garlic. SWEET SMOKEY MOLASSES BARBECUE SAUCE: Okay, they delivered five different meats in a dish that weighed a couple of pounds--and brought one, ONE, standard service cup of sauce. The flavor? YOU BETTER LIKE CUMIN AND LIKE IT A LOT. This sauce has no resemblance, NO resemblance, NONE, NONE, NONE, to any BBQ sauce that comes out of the Carolinas. It tastes like somebody made a bland, weak tomato sauce with corn syrup and "smoke flavor" and a bean counter said, "IT NEEDS TO TASTE SOUTHWESTERN!" So they added as much cumin to the sauce as possible. PREFACE TO ALL THE MEAT DISHES: Every one of them, and we had pulled pork, pulled chicken, smoked wings, brisket, and ribs, were all REHEATED. They didn't just taste reheated, they tasted OLD. Every one of them tasted like it had been cooked at Company HQ, vacuum-packed, stored in bulk, and distributed to their stores nationwide over the next week. And done? Nope. Not cooked nearly enough. Some bean counter somewhere decided they could get the biggest profit by cooking it for the least amount of time while still making it edible. Smoke flavor? Forget it. It tastes like they cooked their meat in a massive mechanical oven the size of a mobile home and used a half-pound of the blandest wood pellets they could get. The wood smoke flavor isn't even identifiable--is it hickory? Alder? Apple? Pecan? Can't tell. WINGS: These were actually the best because of the amount of spices used covered the reheated flavor and lack of smoke flavor. That doesn't mean they were good. They weren't. PULLED CHICKEN: Or, NOT pulled chicken, but chicken mechanically separated from the bone. Big chunks of chicken do NOT equal pulled chicken. The flavor was horrible. I dislike reheated chicken to begin with, and it didn't just taste reheated, it tasted OLD. Very little chicken flavor, very little smoke flavor, and DRY. PULLED PORK: Same as the chicken: very little meat flavor, very little smoke flavor, and DRY. BRISKET: Not just dry, not just flavorless (I don't exaggerate--it had NO flavor except the thin smoke), but TOUGH. Brisket should be cooked fork-tender: the way to tell if your brisket is done is if you stick a fork in and twist it. If it turns, it's done. If it doesn't, it's not. This stuff? You'd have a problem getting the fork in it to begin with. No juiciness. No collagen breakdown. It had the consistency of underdone roast beef and the flavor of shoe leather. LAST AND MOST DEFINITELY LEAST: THE RIBS. Same stuff: dry, reheated, and tough. I like my ribs to have a bit of chew to them, to have to be torn from the bone a little, but this meat was HARD. It was impossible to chew and the flavor was awful. We got three bones each. I ate one and a half and stopped. My girl ate one and stopped. We threw the rest out. It was inedible. Listen. I'm no noob. I've been cooking since I was a teenager, and I am 59 years old now. I learned how to cook in restaurants, I've taught myself scores of techniques, and I learned barbecue at the feet of SERIOUS pitmasters. No barbecue cook I have ever met would even think of asking people to pay for the meat this company produces. It's garbage. The only good it had was that it filled my stomach. I could have gotten that by making myself a grilled cheese sandwich, AND IT WOULD HAVE TASTED BETTER. Never trying again. read more

I didn't. In fact, they've been here in Stark County for quite some time --and-- there are 3 Stark County locations to choose from. This past Sunday, after seeing a random photo on Facebook about a local festival, I was taken to Old Carolina's Fan Page. After reading some of the comments and looking at the pictures, I decided to drive down and check it out... The location closest to me is on Everhard Rd in Canton, and if you go looking for it, like I did, it may become apparent why you too have not noticed it before: it's easy to miss. There are two signs out front. The main sign is buried among the mosaic of the Plaza signs', and the other is a plain wooden sign tucked under the trees (pictured right). If you need a land mark, it's next door to the Brown Derby, and almost across the street from Pier One Imports - if that helps you. Despite being located in a plaza, you'll be greeted by an out door patio that is nicely maintained, and you'll hardly be bothered by the traffic from Everhard Rd. I ordered a pulled-pork sandwich, mashed potatoes, green beans and poured a Dr. Pepper to go with it. Once you order, you just have a seat and the folks behind the counter will bring your food out to you. I was here after lunch hours, however, this place can be quite packed during lunch, so you may want to call ahead and order. Did I mention they also cater!? It's no secret that I dislike menus that do not have a full array of photos for items on the menu. OC's menu is here on the wall, and you have to let your stomach and smell be your guide. Also not mentioned on the menu is their FREE WIFI! Awesome. They have a full array of original tasting BBQ sauces. My favorite, and the most spicy was the "Screamin' Beaver" - honestly, it wasn't that hot though. It was just right. When compared to BW3 Wing Sauce or Quaker Stake and Lube, I would rate their heat level a mild to medium by comparison. However, its not wing sauce, its a delicious spicy BBQ sauce - and I know you'll just love it too. My food was delicious, of course. One thing I hate when I read food reviews is trusting someone else's taste buds. What I can tell you is this joint is a jumpin' with business and they are expanding and growing as a chain. Old Carolina's is a slam dunk any day or evening out. Give it a try - and don't be afraid to give up Cola for the day to taste their Cherry Wine soda! I stopped in here for a quick lunch and they succeeded with this. I ordered the pulled pork for $5.99. It wasn't mouth watering juicy but wasn't bad either. My friend ordered the 1/3 slab of ribs and they were okay. There were four of us and that is how we all felt about the place. It was nice trying the four sauces as the hot one definitely has a nice kick. They have lunch specials everyday which could make this a decent lunch stop. The inside of Old Carolina BBQ is a fairly plain joint with no atmosphere that clearly thrives on the basis of their service and the food. They don't have a large menu so the few things they do offer they do well. You can choose between pulled pork, pork spare ribs, smoked turkey, chicken, beef brisket, or any combination thereof. Essentially you're just looking for a way to get your favorite meat piled in front of you with your favorite barbeque sauce. I can't claim my meal was exceptional in any way, but I'm not a true BBQ fanatic. The ribs were a bit stiff and dry for my taste, not fall-off-the-bone juicy. The chicken was good but didn't strike me as anything spectacular. I will say that the selection of barbecue sauces are fantastic. I visited with three others who are BBQ fanatics and the all rated their meals five out of five stars. The service at Old Carolina barbecue was beyond exceptional. Cost-wise, you're looking at paying about $15 per person for a good meal. The portions are sizeable so you can easily bring half home for a second meal. read more
