I feel like this place is a hidden gem in Sun City Center! True, traditional German comfort food and beer. The giant pretzel was piping hot and delicious! The beer servings are huge and cheap. I got the Sample Platter to try a little bit of everything - 1 slice of Sauerbraten, 1 slice of Pork Roast, 1 Bratwurst, 1 Chicken Schnitzel, pan-fried potatoes, Spätzle, bread dumplings, Sauerkraut, and Red cabbage - you could split this with another person. Last Friday (2/7/20) while in FL I visited for dinner as we had a hankering for good German food! We arrived at about 6:30 pm and were greeted by hostess "Reilly" (she says no relation to O'Reilly Auto Parts! LOL) who asked us if we had reservations which we didn't. She said there would be a short wait and she came outside where we were waiting in about 10-15 minutes and told us that there was a high-top table available. Perfect! She seated us and our server Ty came over in a few minutes to take drink and appy orders. We shared a hot pretzel as an appy. The place was busy but they maintained attentive service. We ordered our entrees. Reilly provided us with a complimentary bread basket. I enjoyed the pork shank (oven roasted served with sauerkraut, pork sauce and bread dumplings @ $18). The meat was fall off the bone tender. Ty explained that the chef prepares the pork shanks a day or two ahead and partially cooks them. After a customer orders one it's fully cooked to finish it off. Ty recognized that our wait was a bit longer that what it should have been and provided us with a complimentary dessert - homemade warm Apple Strudel served with vanilla ice cream that the three of us shared. That's managing customers' expectations and made the wait (and Apple Strudel) more "palatable." I discussed this restaurant with someone I met at the FL State Fair (who actually works for a BBQ restaurant nearby). She confirmed my understanding that the German cuisine served at Old Castle is the real deal! I respect her opinion because she lived in Germany for 3 years! read more

I LOVE this place. The beer is always good. A few DELICIOUS German Sangria's will have you feeling just right. The schnitzel, the dipping sauce choices, the live music- fabulous. But the absolute best in my opinion is the mushroom gravy. I DREAM about that mushroom gravy. Service can be a tab bit slow at times but that's no fault at all of the awesome servers, it's because it's always packed because it awesome and people who love this place, like me- know it's well worth a little wait. We love German food and were so excited to find this place on our FL vacation! The location isn't anything special but the friendly staff and authentic food and draft beer selections more than make up for it. Staff were great. The giant pretzel really is giant! Good dipping sauces too. The nurnberger sausage, spaetzle and Wienerschnitzel tasted just like in Germany! The only bummer was they were out of several beers. Definitely recommend!! read more

I'm giving Old Castle a solid five because not only did they make us feel like a million bucks up in there, they delivered on good, wholesome, traditional German American fare without breaking the bank. You can get all sorts of mains on their lunch menu under $10 you'd never see anywhere else. They've got the right beers. The right attitude. Food's good. What more could you ask for? We'd been here once before and they were too busy to serve us; but they'v expanded, growing into and opening up next door as well. Nevertheless, we came back because something about them sounded, smelled so good; the way they treated us when they sent us away. All bespoke of who they are and what they do. To me, German's mostly not unlike Mexican or so many other foreign comfort foods; food of the poor. So it should be cheap. A few hot dogs (and I know they're a bit more than that) and pasta (spaetzle) shouldn't ever be more than a few dollars but most German places try to hold sway over a wallet but not Old Castle so much. This place has become one of my favorite German restaurants. I would gladly travel an hour and a half from Orlando to get to it. It's a fun atmosphere. There's live music during the weekends. The staff is incredibly welcoming, helpful, and engaging. Prices are great. Most German places charge a lot for their food, but Old Castle's lunch menu is one of the best I've seen. They serve generous portions at a reasonable price. We shared the stake: three bratwursts of your choice surrounded by spaetzel. It originally comes with pan fried potatoes but we substituted them for cheese spaetzel. I love cheese spaetzel. I could eat it all day. Anyways, they offer a variety of German beers. And I am really loving the decor. 5 stars for their attentive employees, good authentic German food, and fantastic beers. read more

Always had wonderful food and service until last night. Arrived at 4:45 for dinner, took our order at 5:10. Two of us ordered Rindspoulade, after 35:00 minutes our waitress informed us that they only had one left. I changed my order to pork Schnitzel A La Chef. Not until 6:35 did our waitress inform us they were out of breadcrumbs, really an hour and a half after sitting there. She did give us a few pieces of bread knowing we had been waiting for over an hour. We asked how long it would be because she told us someone went to the grocery store to get some. She came back and told us they just got some. Now our order comes and it was wrong. She brings out Hunters Schnitzel covered with mushrooms, being allergic to mushrooms I couldn't eat it. Finally we all had our dinners and the German potato salad was ice cold. The cold potato salad was replaced with a dish full of potato salad from the microwave, warm in the center and cold on top. It's very disappointing after driving from St Pete Beach in inclement weather to have one of favorite restaurants have such an underwhelming experience. We certainly will think twice before returning to Old Castle Restaurant. read more

Very disappointed. We had just come from a hike at Little Manatee State Park with our dog and were looking for some quick fast food and stumbled on this place. We got super excited to have some German food and beer instead and decided it was worth stopping for a sit down meal. The hostess had to ask the server if we could be served outside since we had our dog. I immediately saw a server with a sour face shaking her head in the back of the bar. Sure enough, even though they weren't busy, only about 4-5 tables and 2 servers on, they refused to serve us outside. Why would you have 3 outside tables if you don't want to serve outside? Ate there on a Thursday evening to avoid the lines on Friday and Saturday night. Really cool decorations and atmosphere. We asked the waitress for recommendations and she didn't disappoint! I absolutely wanted to love this place as many of our friends have raved about it. At 5:30 on a Saturday night, we got the last table. Hostess didn't provide menus, so by the time the server showed up, we weren't ready to order, but did order beer. Everyone enjoyed their beer. We placed our food order at 5:45. I ordered the pork cutlet cordon bleu, which came with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Our food came at 6:50!!!! During that entire 65 minutes we never once saw our server to order another beer or to even inquire as to why it was taking so long. Our friends got their food first, and then our food came out 5 minutes later. Our server never returned to check on whether we were happy with meals or not. We grabbed her as she was walking by to get our check (because we were now going to be late for a show), and also asked for to go boxes. She brought the checks, but no boxes. We had to grab a bus boy to bring boxes. As you can imagine, we were totally annoyed with service. As for the food, it did come out very hot. The pork was so fried, I couldn't really taste the cheese and ham inside. I neglected to notice that the mashed potatoes were served with gravy, which I don't like, and was only able to eat around the edges. The red cabbage was good. Overall, not impressed. read more

I was so excited to see rouladen on the menu. I chose to stop here for an early dinner because of it. It is one of my very favorite German dishes, but I do not make it often as it is somewhat labor intensive. I've had the pleasure of eating it back when Schnitzelhaus was open in Tampa and at the Edelweiss Inn back in Chicago. A well-made rouladen should be tender from a long braise. The onion bacon, pickle, and mustard should marry together in each bite, blending those bold flavors together until they are more than the sum of their parts. ... but this one had none of those qualities. It was tough and dry. Even the sauce was not enough to save it. It was ridiculously under seasoned. As a rule, I do not salt food in restaurants because I expect that it comes out of the kitchen with enough seasoning to make the dish sing. When the server offered me salt and pepper, I found it odd and declined it. Then I tasted my food. It was like they were cooking exclusively for people who cannot have salt in their diets. Even a liberal sprinkling of salt couldn't fix it. The spatzel was no better. Somehow, what I was served was chewy. I can only imagine that the dough was overworked or the spatzel was over cooked. Certainly, there was no salt in the dough or in the water it was cooked in. Sadness. I make a pretty mean spatzel. Even Chef Mike at Schnitzelhaus praised my recipe and technique. I felt like I should've gone back to the kitchen and given them a quick run down. Really, the only saving grace was the red cabbage. It was pretty darn perfect. That was the one thing on my plate that I gobbled up. The service was fine. Ambience was good, too. My hang up is that the food was generally lackluster. read more

Been to the Old Castle a few times in the past years. The representation of authentic German food is plentiful. The red cabbage is spot on! The Yeager Schnitzel needed an extra dash of salt to bring it together for me but the rest of the guests at the table didn't add anything to theirs.
