I have dined here six times in 10 years and every time the food takes 30-45 minutes to arrive, ok I get it one cook, the food tastes good, that is why I return, but my issue is the hot pretzel never comes out hot in fact I dined this on 12/1/2022 at 6:15 pm the place was not busy and my pretzel was still frozen, then 45 minutes later my veal schnitzel for two comes out, it was cold. the waitress never came over to ask is everything ok. if the owner wants to remain open he should attempt to serve hot food to his guests. This is the very definition of quaint and cozy! It would be uncomfortably crowded with a crowd of 30 or so,but on a Wednesday at 6:30 my father and I were immediately seated. There shouldn't be any parking issues as it's in a fairly large shopping plaza. The atmosphere is authentic German Brauhaus all the way! I was driving so I only had 2 Bitburgers but the beer menu included lagers, ales and stouts so I would expect them all to be worth trying. The menu features what I expected in German cuisine. I had to really fight to not order sausage but wanted to go for something I couldn't get elsewhere. I got the hunter schnitzel and was impressed. Mine was veal ( you can get pork or chicken as well) and it was nice and thin, lightly breaded and crispy. The mushroom gravy was flavorful without overpowering and the spatzle was also seasoned perfectly. The service was prompt and friendly so no complaints there either. I recommend this spot for a change of pace that will bring you back for more! read more

I LOVE this place. The beer is always good. A few DELICIOUS German Sangria's will have you feeling just right. The schnitzel, the dipping sauce choices, the live music- fabulous. But the absolute best in my opinion is the mushroom gravy. I DREAM about that mushroom gravy. Service can be a tab bit slow at times but that's no fault at all of the awesome servers, it's because it's always packed because it awesome and people who love this place, like me- know it's well worth a little wait. I suppose I could do without shoving their political views down patrons throat everywhere you look but hey, I don't own the place and it doesn't impede me from enjoying amazing food and drinks so I can live with it. read more

A hidden gem! This place is too good for words. Every time we have gone, has been a great experience-- from the food to the service to the entertainment. They have live music often, tonight they had a man on the accordion and he really gets the whole place into it. It's a whole experience. The food is truly amazing, so tasty and fresh. I feel like this place is a hidden gem in Sun City Center! True, traditional German comfort food and beer. The giant pretzel was piping hot and delicious! The beer servings are huge and cheap. I got the Sample Platter to try a little bit of everything - 1 slice of Sauerbraten, 1 slice of Pork Roast, 1 Bratwurst, 1 Chicken Schnitzel, pan-fried potatoes, Spätzle, bread dumplings, Sauerkraut, and Red cabbage - you could split this with another person. The red cabbage was to die for! My only complaint is that the Spätzle was a little bland but the rest of the meal made up for it. Definitely come here with an empty stomach! read more

Last Friday (2/7/20) while in FL I visited for dinner as we had a hankering for good German food! We arrived at about 6:30 pm and were greeted by hostess "Reilly" (she says no relation to O'Reilly Auto Parts! LOL) who asked us if we had reservations which we didn't. She said there would be a short wait and she came outside where we were waiting in about 10-15 minutes and told us that there was a high-top table available. Perfect! She seated us and our server Ty came over in a few minutes to take drink and appy orders. We shared a hot pretzel as an appy. The place was busy but they maintained attentive service. We ordered our entrees. Reilly provided us with a complimentary bread basket. I enjoyed the pork shank (oven roasted served with sauerkraut, pork sauce and bread dumplings @ $18). The meat was fall off the bone tender. Ty explained that the chef prepares the pork shanks a day or two ahead and partially cooks them. After a customer orders one it's fully cooked to finish it off. Ty recognized that our wait was a bit longer that what it should have been and provided us with a complimentary dessert - homemade warm Apple Strudel served with vanilla ice cream that the three of us shared. That's managing customers' expectations and made the wait (and Apple Strudel) more "palatable." I discussed this restaurant with someone I met at the FL State Fair (who actually works for a BBQ restaurant nearby). She confirmed my understanding that the German cuisine served at Old Castle is the real deal! I respect her opinion because she lived in Germany for 3 years! read more

We noticed the bar on the other side of the restaurant was packed, probably with locals/snowbirds. Next time we show, we will probably just plant there and enjoy the scene. Always had wonderful food and service until last night. Arrived at 4:45 for dinner, took our order at 5:10. Two of us ordered Rindspoulade, after 35:00 minutes our waitress informed us that they only had one left. I changed my order to pork Schnitzel A La Chef. Not until 6:35 did our waitress inform us they were out of breadcrumbs, really an hour and a half after sitting there. She did give us a few pieces of bread knowing we had been waiting for over an hour. We asked how long it would be because she told us someone went to the grocery store to get some. She came back and told us they just got some. Now our order comes and it was wrong. She brings out Hunters Schnitzel covered with mushrooms, being allergic to mushrooms I couldn't eat it. Finally we all had our dinners and the German potato salad was ice cold. The cold potato salad was replaced with a dish full of potato salad from the microwave, warm in the center and cold on top. It's very disappointing after driving from St Pete Beach in inclement weather to have one of favorite restaurants have such an underwhelming experience. We love German food and were so excited to find this place on our FL vacation! The location isn't anything special but the friendly staff and authentic food and draft beer selections more than make up for it. Staff were great. The giant pretzel really is giant! Good dipping sauces too. The nurnberger sausage, spaetzle and Wienerschnitzel tasted just like in Germany! The only bummer was they were out of several beers. Definitely recommend!! read more

I'm giving Old Castle a solid five because not only did they make us feel like a million bucks up in there, they delivered on good, wholesome, traditional German American fare without breaking the bank. You can get all sorts of mains on their lunch menu under $10 you'd never see anywhere else. They've got the right beers. The right attitude. Food's good. What more could you ask for? We'd been here once before and they were too busy to serve us; but they'v expanded, growing into and opening up next door as well. Nevertheless, we came back because something about them sounded, smelled so good; the way they treated us when they sent us away. All bespoke of who they are and what they do. To me, German's mostly not unlike Mexican or so many other foreign comfort foods; food of the poor. So it should be cheap. A few hot dogs (and I know they're a bit more than that) and pasta (spaetzle) shouldn't ever be more than a few dollars but most German places try to hold sway over a wallet but not Old Castle so much. This place has become one of my favorite German restaurants. I would gladly travel an hour and a half from Orlando to get to it. It's a fun atmosphere. There's live music during the weekends. The staff is incredibly welcoming, helpful, and engaging. Prices are great. Most German places charge a lot for their food, but Old Castle's lunch menu is one of the best I've seen. They serve generous portions at a reasonable price. We shared the stake: three bratwursts of your choice surrounded by spaetzel. It originally comes with pan fried potatoes but we substituted them for cheese spaetzel. I love cheese spaetzel. I could eat it all day. Anyways, they offer a variety of German beers. And I am really loving the decor. 5 stars for their attentive employees, good authentic German food, and fantastic beers. read more

Very disappointed. We had just come from a hike at Little Manatee State Park with our dog and were looking for some quick fast food and stumbled on this place. We got super excited to have some German food and beer instead and decided it was worth stopping for a sit down meal. The hostess had to ask the server if we could be served outside since we had our dog. I immediately saw a server with a sour face shaking her head in the back of the bar. Sure enough, even though they weren't busy, only about 4-5 tables and 2 servers on, they refused to serve us outside. Why would you have 3 outside tables if you don't want to serve outside? Been to the Old Castle a few times in the past years. The representation of authentic German food is plentiful. The red cabbage is spot on! The Yeager Schnitzel needed an extra dash of salt to bring it together for me but the rest of the guests at the table didn't add anything to theirs. Saturday night visit with new neighbors who had never been there. Arrived before 6:00 and had a table by 6:15. Place was packed. We must have had a banned table as waited quite a while for service. Beer was served in about 10 minutes and order placed. 40 minutes later it arrived. Delicious but 2 hours for dinner to introduce new folks to a local restaurant was unfortunate. If you were looking for authentic German food, this is the best place that we have found near Valrico and Tampa. Right off the decor is so real you'll feel like you're in Munich. At times they even have a German music accordion musician. Not loud and obnoxious just right. The food is excellent. I especially like the Wienerschnitzel but my husband likes the sauerbraten. We tried a variety, but it was so much food that we had enough for a dinner and a lunch. That is the trouble with German food. Three days later you're hungry again ha ha.
