But seriously, you can find anything you need to make a homemade Dutch meal or to celebrate any tradition or holiday. It's not only a fun store to shop for unique goodies, but the staff who work here are super friendly to boot! (Or to wooden shoe!) In the back, you'll find a deli counter where you can purchase cheeses, sandwiches or soups. I enjoyed the Norwegian Cauliflower Meatball soup which was tasty and unusual at the same time. Oma introduced me to this store many years ago. They have the best sandwiches and cheese. Every time we go, my husband and I grab 5 chocolates for our grandchildren. They love the windmill cookies too! I love going inside the store, the staff are always so friendly and as I look at everything my memories of Oma return. The potato salad and red cabbage are something special; I buy both of them both by the pint. Wiener Schnitzel Sandwich (stacked cutlet, pickle, grain mustard and mayo, between two toasted pieces of bread): substantial, as the cutlet is cut and stacked between the bread. Was delicious. Nederlander (beef croquette, mayo, lettuce, between a rosette bun): soft texture w/a slight crunch. I enjoyed it. Side note: the red cabbage reminds me of Siegfried's (downtown SLC), which I also love. Can be eaten warm or cold. There are tables in the front window nook; great for looking out on the street and mountains in the background, on a clear day. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. A great little Dutch/German establishment for your European needs. You can get meats and cheeses, potato salad/sauerkraut, sandwiches, and various treats, pastries, and other baking/cooking ingredients, but my favorite part of this place is the deli. Now to address the reviews disappointed in their sandwiches, they are very typical European sandwiches - meat and cheese but they also have tomato and lettuce so it's a bit fresher and moister (sorry) than a typical Euro sandwich. For the Scandinavians around Utah this is a great store. Wish they had more organic and organic grocery selections but completely understand the difficulty and expensive of that . As a Norwegian, I grew up eating Nokkelost cheese, and intermittently they have it, so excited when they do! It is only made in Norway and not something you can find in the grocery store. They have a lot of sweets and candy and a nice deli for sandwiches. They just updated and the place looks great. read more

The ladies who work here are wonderfully friendly and helpful. After eating a delicious lunch, I had the New Berlin and it was perfect, I wanted to bring home some meats and cheeses l. I was offered samples and recommendations based on what sort of flavors I like and I went home happy and already planning on coming back. Some people have mentioned that items are expensive, but I think the price points are right on the mark for the quality you're getting. I'm also not going to fault them for less than stellar parking, that can't be helped. Inside it's clean, cute and casual. Very nice place for a quick lunch and an excellent deli counter. I finally made my way here, but did not feel this was the best of our local European markets as the selection is limited, and prices are spectacularly high. With that said, this may be worth seeking out if you are searching for a very particular ingredient. They have stunning pearl sugar for homemade liege waffles, choquettes, and other goodies. The assortment of sprinkles for hagelslag is unmatched by anywhere nearby (Never had hagelslag? It's buttered toast topped by a splendiferous abundance of sprinkles, pure magic, and you need some in your life). There are great varieties of sweets: chocolate, cookies, salty licorice, etc, and many brands I've not seen elsewhere, but again, with the high prices I couldn't quite muster up enough enthusiasm to purchase any. I did not try a sandwich, so that may be a redeeming quality for the shop, though the deli case appeared a bit limited. The menu sounded appetizing, though, and they even make breakfast sammies on Saturdays. You cannot park on the north side of the building, there are roughly one million signs stating this, so make sure you grab a spot on the south side, next to the wall mural. read more

I wish I had known this place way earlier! Our lunch was good, I would say the Bavarian sandwich is a bit better than the Netherlander one. Bavarian is very much similar to Reuben; meat is a sausage that has chewier case. I had to say their pickle is probably one of the best I've eaten, so is their split pea soup. read more

One of the best, and maybe most underrated or unknown, gems of Salt Lake is The Old Dutch Store. It has been a while since I visited and I'm so glad I went back! My family is Danish, so anytime I can find the food of my heritage I feel more connected. The Old Dutch Store carries Dutch, German, and Scandinavian goods. They also have a deli, where in addition to selling meats and cheeses by the pound, they sell sandwiches and sides. In an effort to be more adventurous I order a Liverwurst, or in Danish, a Leverpostej sandwich. It's a type of Liver Paté, and while not quite traditional Danish it was close. I'm Denmark they put the Leverpostej on open face rye bread, with a little mayo maybe, and topped with pickled red cabbage. This sandwich was on the most amazing sandwich roll I've ever had! A combination of soft dreamy white bread and a Kaiser roll... I want all my sandwiches on this roll in the future. I added mayo, Liverwurst, lettuce, and tomato. The Liverwurst has a little bit of an odd mineraly, livery aftertaste, but that's just all Liverwurst in general. I'm glad I got it, it's actually my Mom's favorite, but next time I'm anxious to try some of their other options. I also got a side of their Cucumber Salad, which is totally a Scandinavian thing. It's basically very thinly sliced cucumbers in a sweet vinegar marinade. This one also had super thin onions in it. So refreshing! I'm also obsessed with this particular kind of Salty Black Licorice, and tried the Coffee Wafer cookies for funsies! The Old Dutch Store emanates a certain charm which may possibly be tempered by it's food. * ATMOSPHERE ------------------------------ On Highland Drive in Salt Lake City, this single location shop has been open for over 40 years and the exterior reflects this. That said, the aged nature of the place lends itself to a type of "old world" sensibility that I find easy to embrace. Region-specific flags, a windmill atop the structure, and a large mural on one of the exterior walls let you know that the place has ties to the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, and Belgium, where they reportedly import their products from. Inside, I found a small dining area, a deli, and shelves lined with assorted foods like breads, pickles, and sweets among other things. Parking is a the worst I've seen anywhere. In fact, I must've missed something because I did not actually see a parking lot specific to The Old Dutch Store. The store occupies a corner with another shop and I only saw a place for TWO cars to park next to the building. The rest of the spaces, few as they were, seemed to belong to the adjoining shop. * SERVICE ------------------------------ Two gentleman appear to run the floor, one at the deli and another manning the cashier counter. They are very pleasant; friendly and helpful. The sandwiches I ordered were made in a decent amount of time. The man at the deli seemed knowledgeable over the food and was able to answer my questions and make recommendations. * FOOD ------------------------------ Always one for unique food or at least something I haven't tried yet, I was excited to sample some new meat and cheese options here. The sandwiches were okay but sadly, ultimately quite underwhelming. I'm accustomed to far more savory and herbaceous sandwiches from other cuisines. I will say that, for me, there is a neat sense to having a person cut the meat and cheese from a deli counter at a foreign food establishment. There's a connection or authenticity about it which I felt here. Again, there was nothing inherently off-putting about the sandwiches. I'm simply used to something more flavorful. It might so be that for this regions food (at least the sandwiches) that this is the norm. * EXTRAS ------------------------------ None that I know of. * RECOMMENDATIONS ------------------------------ None. * SUMMARY ------------------------------ I feel as though some defense is needed for The Old Dutch Store and so will add here that my experience is limited to a single visit and my complete unfamiliarity with the culture. Stopped I last Saturday for a quick sandwich. We had one Ruben and one German Liver Sausage along with a side of Split Pea Soup. Everything was delicious and quite filling. Seating is very limited so plan on coming early or taking box lunches to the park. For the quality of the products the prices were reasonable. They also have a small store with European products (candy, vegetables and seasonings). It's a great stop to assemble a picnic lunch. read more

The Old Dutch Store is truly a throw back to a more simple era. The music is 50's Dutch/German, with accordions playing. One can imagine some youthful lederhosen boys and long skirted girls dancing at a village festival. The food too is fully Northern European with a fine selection of deli cheeses and meats. Their sandwiches are classics, from the liver wurst based "Vienna", the Reuben, served on fresh Marble Rye bread, or turkey and beef deli sandwiches that hit the spot. You get a really tasty pickle quarter that isn't quite sweet, but not dill either. Parking can be a bit difficult to find but it appears that the Backyard Birds store next door allows parking in their lot. Or, excepting the afternoon rush hours, there is some limited street parking in front. For a little bit of nostalgia and a tasty lunch I can recommend the Old Dutch Shop. Let's postpone the discussion about why people from Holland are "Dutch" (and the tangential discussion of why, when everyone pays for their own ticket it's called "going Dutch") and get straight to business. Old Dutch Store is pretty rad. I don't know how many times I've passed this place but never stopped in. It's not too easy to miss, what with the windmill and everything. It's a little windmill as windmills go, but I'm not seeing many windmills these days, save for the local putt-putt course. The first thing you'll notice when you go in is the smell of the cheese. For me, it's a pleasant smell, but if you don't like the scent of curded things, then beware. It's not a particularly strong smell, but it was noticeable. The store is a treasure trove of European (mostly Scandinavian) items. There's a deli in the back ready to serve you up a sandwich of your choice. Just select the meat of your choice (lots of authentic Euro flavors to choose from) and a wide selection of cheeses from some of the cheese-wisest countries in the world. Ah yaaa. You can sit at one of the small tables to enjoy your sammich, or just wolf it down and get on with shopping. There are several shelves with Scandinavian delights; chocolates (some pig shaped), gummy things (some pig shaped) and a large amount of marzipan (some pig shaped). Seriously, what's with the obsession with the pigs? There are spices, meats, cheeses, and other market items available in fridges and shelves, and of course a little selection of china and wooden shoes. Plenty of other non-food odds n' ends adorn the walls of the shop. I can imagine that Scandinatives (see what I did there) are so very very thankful for a place like this. While I've never been to that part of the world, it was still fantastic to check the place out, and it would be fun to pop in every so often and try a new kind of treat. You rarely find a spot in the states with such charm. It feels like walking into a small deli in Europe...but like one in a small village. I don't think you could convince the owners to change for a million $'s and that is why it is so special. The deli is great. Design your own sandwich or ask for recommendation. You can't go wrong with The Bavarian (housemade Weisswurst served with sauerkraut, and dijon mustard on a brat bun). They keep tradition alive and reflect that in their food as well. Ask about specials and upcoming holidays. Chances are, they will be whipping up something delicious just for that day/s. One more thing, on Wednesday's, you will find fresh Stroopwafels! read more

Went to the old Dutch store on a Wednesday when I was out running errands with my friend. I told him that this place had been around forever and even though likely I wouldn't be able to eat anything here, I thought he might be able to! This place will take you back to Solvang, CA if you've been there or any other German town you may have gotten to visit or go to. I couldn't have much of the delicious cheese so if you go get lots of that. I got some Smurf's candy and then a cucumber salad... fancy and savory, I know. A nice little shop hidden among the residential neighborhoods of Salt Lake. More of a Northern European store than it is Dutch, but good thing because there aren't very many places like this around. They have a nice selection of food, candy, and other misc stuff. There's even a place in the back where you can pick up some deli items for lunch or just to take home. They have a bunch of tables if you want to relax and enjoy a sandwich. Maybe next time I'll stay for lunch! On my quest for some brunost (called gjetost in the states) in Utah, I was only able to find a few spots that had it. Not the Ski Queen brand, but the good stuff. Luckily this was the only place I could find the good stuff. And lots of it. They had a whole case of cheeses and even some specialty cheese imported that I've never seen anywhere else. Meats? That have that as well. Sauces, mixes and prepackaged items are on one side of the store while candies and Sweets are on the other. Dutch, Belgian, Swedish and Norwegian chocolates take up a rack. Dutch candies are on a separate row. If you are wanting something I'm sure they'll have it. They have all sorts of imported goods. The staff are great. I had questions on specific items and they were able to answer them with ease. Friendly and ready to help you out if you get too overwhelmed. There's a parking lot outside and street parking. I really want to support this store but the last two times I've bought something I've had to immediately throw it out. I bought a tub of pearl sugar last year, in the middle of using it I noticed some of the sugar was dark brown. I looked at the bottom of the tub with was cracked and moisture got in. Who knows how long it was sitting on their shelf until I bought it, I had to throw out what I was cooking. The next thing is the Lefse, I bought it one other time from them and it was fine. Two days ago I bought more and it was covered in ice like it have been thawed and refrozen several times. I stupidly bought it thinking it would be fine. It smelled like old dough, which is strange because they are precooked, I tried I was wet and falling into bits, I tried to cook it but spat it out. It tasted nothing like lefse. I cannot believe I paid $8 for two rancid pieces of Lefse. I will just continue to make it myself. To the Old Dutch Store, if it looks bad throw it out, and please check your products regularly for damage. I have had good experiences here but the last two visits I'm very dissatisfied. read more

I'm confused on how there are so many good reviews, maybe we came on a off day. My girlfriend and I had two roast beef "boxes" came with a pickle spear, Dutch cookie and soup or salad. I had the soup (cauliflower & meatball) which was like mash potatoes in a bowl, and my love had the potato salad, both were flavorless and gross. The pickle spears we not spears but mini pickles sliced in half and tasted like they have been sitting there for weeks! Finally we came to our sandwiches which are really hard to screw up, but they did! Half done ingredients, nothing fresh nothing flavorful. The only saving grace was the Dutch cookie which was actually decent. Fortunately there are 100 other places to get a good sandwich, avoid this one! I want to really like this place as my parents new the original owners dating back to 1950s. There are nice treats here. People are friendly. Pastries are nice too and licorice. I have had sandwiches twice and they were good. What I suggest the store to reconsider are high pricing - you can order a lot on amazon for way less or even cost plus. Spruce up the chairs and eating area...if this were nicer, people may stay and linger and buy more. Better ambience too. Consider to make good Dutch coffee drinks so people come to have coffee and a Dutch pastry. There is a lot of potential with the stores heritage and location. Expand what is offered there. Solve your parking challenge. You are losing sales by not figuring out how to use the parking on either side of the store. Make it easier to enjoy your store. I wanted to love this place, I really did and while I appreciate many elements of it, especially the wonderful staff, I didn't love it. I wanted to like it more than I did, but there are a few issues with this. Pricing would be the big one. I get imported stuff costs, but even at that, they're more than a bit out of line. This makes this necessary only if I want something Germanic or otherwise Teutonic (I'm including Holland in this, though it's stretching a bit and the Danes, though there is much less of that. There is precious little actually Scandinavian (we take that to mean Norway and Sweden, though most include Finland also, though in more respects, that has both influenced and been influenced by Russia considerably). World history aside, outside of finally finding Cervelat since moving down here, this place has little to offer me anymore, aside from delightful pictures of that part of Europe, reminiscent of my younger days. I think this because my tastes have been permanently and irrevocably altered. If it's a deli, I prefer it to be Italian and as much as I love a good pastrami sandwich, I'd rather have something other than that most of the time. The pastrami sandwich here did a good thing by deleting the noxious Thousand Island that most places like to slather on their sandwiches in favor of a deli mustard, but then ruined the effect by having a miniscule amount of meat, especially given the thick slices of bread and then toasted it very poorly. My wife liked her sandwich somewhat better, I think, but again, nothing she would make a special trip for. I also had the stroopwaffle, which is a couple waffle shaped wafers with honey between, but both sides were somewhat overcooked, which cut the enjoyment considerably. There were also some hardtack ginger cookies (as good as they sound) and a slice of the butter cake, which was too heavily reminiscent of almond extract. Soda selection here is a bit abysmal, so with very average sandwiches, high prices and a sort of small and interesting space, though with a very friendly staff, there is little to recommend it...unless you're looking for Cervelat or other deli meats, including fish, more relative to that part of Europe...or pickles. They have those also and they were pretty good. I'm reaching here, because I still want to like this more than I do, but this visit, after years and years of driving by and meaning to, was nothing moreso than underwhelming. read more

Kinda in love with this little place. I have been going to The Old Dutch Store for a long time and I think they are better than ever. I read others reviews and appreciate all of the comments good and not so good, but because I really really like this place, I thought the time had come for a five star from good ol' me. When you walk into the ODS you immediately smell the cheese. Delicious, strong, pungent and mouthwatering cheese stink. Love! You know this place is legit for people who love cheese just by the scent. Good! Also, it is such a little old place that is packed with so many fascinating products it is kind of an experience just going there. I really knew nothing about Dutch cuisine and I did not know of the Indonesian culinary influence, but they carry lots of mixes, and kits and spices to make your own dishes including Indonesian spices. I also did not know of the Dutch obsession with black licorice (a love/hate for many of us) and being a fan of the stuff I cannot believe the many varieties (varietals hehe) of black licorice like salty and hard and chewy and yum. The sandwiches! So fun and different. This ain't no Subway. The sandwiches are build-your-own or a house specialty. What I really like are the house specialties. I love the Sharon special. Pastrami and Jarlsberg Swiss and mayo and Dijon and a great frisch gherkin (a sour sweet yummy pickle that they also sell there...) and its on Marble Rye. That is the one I continually get and now they have soup and so I need to try that soon. My little fam has also adopted a Dutch family tradition of giving everyone a chocolate letter around the holiday time. See? I would have never known about this if it were not for the Old Dutch Store! I really recommend this place and I think you will be glad to give it a try. The service is always friendly and if you hit it just right, you may even get serenaded by a little old Dutch man who often works in the back deli counter. I think I have a crush on him. read more
