Great spot. Great atmosphere. Great drinks. I was really impressed with Old Ebbitt Grill. My buddy and I were able to snag some seats at one of the bars, and we immediately ordered drinks. I got their take on a Whiskey Sour. 10/10 drink. I noticed on the menu that they added some maple and lime zest in there, which isn't common for a Whiskey Sour. However, I found that this really elevated the drink from above average to excellent. I then ordered a Negroni after this, and it was also phenomenal. We didn't get much food-wise, just split a Bacon Cheeseburger and Fries. Nothing to complain about there. The Cheeseburger was juicy and full of flavor. I also cannot rave enough about the atmosphere inside. This place has four different bars, we only got to explore two of them. It's fancy and very well-kept inside. The service is top-notch, and it really is just a fun spot to dress up and stop by for a drink with friends. I'll be trying some more of their food the next time I'm in DC; because I'll definitely be returning! Thank you Old Ebbitt for the great experience.
I kept seeing this place pop up as one of the few places to try in DC and we saved it for last and so glad we did! The service, food, and hospitality was the best we received in DC. Coming from CA, this place had the BEST crab cakes ever!! So let's back track, we opted for the bar instead of a table which I preferred. Our server was great. We ordered the clam chowder, shrimp and grits, oysters, and crab cake to share. Everything was super yummy, only downside was things did take a while to come out But I will be definitely dreaming of the crab cake, it was literally all crab! Oysters were fresh, shrimp and grits was a bit too tomatoy for me, but still yummy. And the clam chowder was delish too
This restaurant is tradition anytime I'm back home in D.C. I've been coming here since I was a teenager with my parents and it was always a place we'd bring visiting family. I called ahead to make reservations for me and my daughter and we enjoyed dinner and dessert. Service was excellent! No complaints
Service was amazingly fast for a busy day, food was great too! Parking is the biggest challenge here, right across the street from the White House can be daunting. Was able to have a nice fast meal with a variety of fresh oysters, my favorite raw bar pick. They also make a delicious rib eye which was cooked to perfection. This is the oldest restaurant in DC, it was very large and spacious with an old tavern feel with a touch or class. Nice place to stop in just to sample all the types of oysters especially during the happy hours 3-6pm.
I got to hit up the oldest saloon in DC before heading back home! A lot larger than I expected (which is amazing!) to help accommodate all of the people wanting to go there. Super popular tourist spot (and with good reason!),I def reccomend making a reservation. Luckily for my visit on a Saturday at 1pm, the wait to be seated wasn't too long, only about 10 minutes. I've never had oysters anywhere besides New York so I wanted to try them here and my mom got the fried oyster deviled eggs. Our sever Stephanie was such a delight and probably has the coolest pin collection I've ever seen. Also the restaurant just has a really beautiful atmosphere to sit down and enjoy some really great hospitality. Onto the food! Oysters were smaller than I thought they'd be but SO FLAVORFUL and just the right amount of brine, and slid beautifully from the shell 10/10 The deviled eggs were given a 10/10, presentation was beautiful and the pickled relish was a well rounded addition We then finished up by sharing the cheasapeake eggs Benedict! Which featured their famous crab cake. The HOLLANDAISE?? literally danced in my mouth. The crab meat was so tender and buttery! Only difference I would've loved if the smoked paprika that was on the deviled eggs to also be featured on the Benedict! Over all it was a very lovely and sense awakening experience 9/10
Old Ebbitt Grill is one of Washington, DC's most storied saloons (turned into a restaurant), packed with old school charm. It has been open 150 years after starting in 1856. It's moved around a bit over the years and the exact original location is a mystery. The restaurant story is just the start. The food of course is where it's at. Old Ebbitt is famous for it's crab cakes according to the server so you know what direction I went in. They were more like a Maryland crab cake which has a ton of meat. We were at their lunch dining so salads were also ordered and tasted amazing. Finished the mean off with a Key Lime Pie and coffee. Reservations are highly recommended given its popularity. They also asked that all attendees in your party are present so remember that to be seated. Situated near the White House, and directly across the street from The Department of Treasury, it's an ideal spot for a meal before or after site seeing. What's clear about Old Ebbitt Grill is its longstanding appeal. President McKinley was such a fan he reportedly lived there during his Congressional days. Presidents Grant, Johnson, Cleveland, and Roosevelt all stopped in, basically making it a hot spot in Washington. If it's President approved you should go also!
I was in DC August 2026 for the weekend and visited Old Ebbitt Grill for dinner on Friday night based on Yelper reviews and hotel concierge recommendations. OEG definitely did not disappoint! For apps, we got the mussels and the hummus. I've eaten tons of hummus and this was the best I've ever had. The pitas were warm and soft and the hummus had a pico de gallo-like relish on top. My friends entrees included the massive pork chop, my pimento and jalapeño burger cooked to order, The food was amazing! So much so that I forgot to take pictures! Though there were tons of people both dining and waiting, our party of four waited only 2 minutes after being told 10. The ambience is casual with some old-time flare. If you choose Old Ebbitt, I highly doubt you will be disappointed by anything. Our server was busy, but maintained reasonable contact with our party. Kudos to Old Ebbitt!
Old Ebbitt Grill is a very good option for lunch, brunch, or dinner in downtown DC. It is in proximity to The White House and Pennsylvania Avenue corridor. For planning purposes, you are within walking distance to Freedom Plaza, Lafayette Park, and a direct path to the Washington Monument. The food here is very good, but what you're paying for is the rich history of the establishment and great customer service. Our server, Peter, was very knowledgeable of the restaurant history and menu, friendly, and engaged us in organic conversation. The management team was also very friendly and engaging. Some of the best customer service you can experience in DC. The recipes and menu options are simple, but the execution is what makes this place an easy return for diners. They are known for their seafood here, oysters in particular, with a solid selection of staples. The biggest value is perhaps lunch as there are a few options around $20 that are filling and delicious; beating similar pricing for lunch at other places, but at a lesser value. The interior is characteristic of 20th century American midwest saloon. A lot of Victorian decor with mahogany wood throughout. Much of the character of the restaurant is built on this idea. The restaurant group has done a good job of preserving what seems to be original interior and exterior design from the previous occupant, the B. F. Keith's Theater. There's a downstairs which has space for private dining, and there are multiple bars indoors, an atrium, and lounge all which the latter are operated by Old Ebbitt Grill. Overall, a very good experience for good good and a history lesson.
So excited to have finally tried out the oldest saloon in DC. Thankfully after a long and very hot day this restaurant was able to squeeze us in earlier than our expected reservation. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and quick. The decor is old world style with velour and dark oak with gas lamps scattered throughout. I had to try the oysters Rockefeller which was just top notch, while my dear friend ordered the oysters deviled eggs. Once our main entrees came they enjoyed their steak frites with a delicious garlic sauce and the cheeseburger. Though my shrimp spaghettini was so light and filling it was perfect on a hot day. Definitely would recommend coming back.
Full body red wine at bar hit the spot. I loved the crabcake appetizer; lots of crab, gently prepared- a favorite. The blackberry-Avacado salad was fresh and delicious. And the pièce de résistance was a med rare filet with chimichurri sauce and sautéed spinach. Service at bar (Alex) was great and the decor was befitting it's history.
Visiting DC, we stopped at Old Ebbitt Grill after a morning at the Smithsonian. Credit where it's due. The building is beautiful, the location is unbeatable, the martinis were excellent, the oysters were fresh, and our waitress was genuinely fun. That said, if you're assigned Table #1, ask for another table. Old Ebbitt has all the makings of a classic DC lunch. Historic wood paneling, political power-lunch energy, and a location steps from the White House. Instead, we found ourselves in what we immediately nicknamed "the Applebee's Room." That's the dining area off to the right. Table #1 (which I heard the hostess whisper to the host that sat us) sits directly next to the only accessible restroom on the main floor and directly beneath the hindquarters of a large dog sculpture. During lunch I found myself making repeated eye contact with a wooden dog's undercarriage while eating oysters. The wall behind our table is literally beside the restroom and features a painting titled "When Nature Calls." I wish I were making that up. Throughout lunch there was a steady parade of restroom traffic, plus a nearby service station door that was slammed often enough to create a light PTSD. The main dining room of Old Ebbitt feels appears to be what you'd expect at an iconic restaurant everyone talks about. Which makes Table #1 in the Applebees annex feel less like a table and more like a practical joke. The food was fine. The martinis were cold. One member of our party even enjoyed an oyster after being assured they were among the "safest oysters" in Washington, DC. As West Coasters, that was a memorable sales pitch. Would I come back? Maybe. Would I sit at Table #1 again? Only if the dog sculpture personally apologized. And management comped my meal.

I was so excited to try this because I heard multiple presidents have been here! We went around 10pm and they sat us right away. We got a few different dishes to share - the asparagus, scallops, clam chowder and caviar. And I loved it all! No complaints about the food. It was also my first time trying caviar so definitely an experience I won't forget. The service was not bad. Our server Johnny checked on us but I do wish he had been more friendly and talkative as it was our first time in DC and trying this restaurant. We spent $200 plus tip. Might come back to try something else
Old Ebbitt Grill was an awesome experience. The place has a really cool, historic vibe that feels like it hasn't changed in over 100 years--in the best way possible. You can tell there's a lot of character and history in every detail. The menu had a great variety of options, and everything we tried was solid and well-prepared. The food quality was definitely on par with what you'd expect from a spot like this. On top of that, the cocktails were excellent--perfectly balanced and made exactly right. Overall, it's a great mix of atmosphere, quality food, and well-made drinks. Definitely worth a visit. read more

This resturant was beautiful and packed even at 8 pm! It was a 90 min wait and worth it. We got the following: -Chowder 5/5: Savory, full of clams and great flavor. -Cheeseburger 3/5: Needed more seasoning on the patty itself but overall good burger. -Oysters Rockefeller 5/5: BOMB DOT COM! -Raw Oysters 5/5: We got pink moon and fortune oysters. The winner was pink moon! Clean, crisp and sweet! -Broccolini 4/5: Beautiful char. Just needed a pinch of salt! -Meatloaf 2/5: I did not like the flavor of this meatloaf. Wouldn't recommend. Only got it because others dining in ordered. We will definitely come back! read more

By far my favorite restaurant in all of DC... Not only is the food always really fresh and consistent, the service is always up to par. The ambience can fit either a fancy or a special occasion or it could be a casual event. There's a reason why they've been open since the 1800s I love this place. read more
During a recent trip to DC, the Mr. and I celebrated my birthday at Old Ebbitt Grill. Ambiance, service, and food were all top notch. Jack our server, made excellent recommendations. We decided to order the pork chop, double crab cakes, and creamed spinach. We shared everything. While everything was scrumptious my favorite was the crab cake. For dessert we had the chocolate chip bread pudding. It was decadent and large enough to share. In a city full of amazing restaurants, Old Ebbitt Grill is a shining star. We get the hype for this place. The food was delicious and the wait was even better. It's such a cool historical place to dine. We stayed around the corner from this restaurant. Despite how busy it was we had a very short wait time. My daughter and I both had the filet and it was delicious. My husband had a burger and he really liked it. Our flight ended leaving earlier so we informed our server and she was very accommodating. read more
We had a fantastic lunch at Old Ebbitt Grill, and a big part of that was our server, Jack. Jack is one of those rare waiters who somehow manages to be informative, funny, attentive, and slightly psychic about what the table needs next. The place was busy (as it usually is for lunch), but honestly we barely noticed because Jack kept everything moving smoothly with recommendations, drink suggestions, and check-ins at exactly the right moments. We started with oysters, which were incredibly fresh and sweet, along with the New England clam chowder and deviled eggs. All excellent and disappeared from the table faster than expected. For the main course, two of us had the pork chop -- one with the shallot cream sauce and the other with the chimichurri. Both were fantastic and easily one of those meals where you start quietly negotiating bites across the table. By the end we were completely full, which was unfortunate because the dessert menu looked dangerously good. One fun moment: someone in our group remembered a drink from her college days and asked about it. Jack somehow managed to convince the bartender to make a smaller version of it, and she was absolutely thrilled. That kind of extra effort is what really makes a place stand out. Great food, great atmosphere, and Jack-level service that made the whole experience even better. Highly recommend. read more
My most disappointing visit here ever. Although not very busy in the mid-afternoon, the hostess was rude. The men's restroom was out of paper towels. Service at the bar was courteous but distracted and slow, slow, slow. The bartenders seemed to spend a lot of time chatting with each other or looking at their cell phones. And, it was annoying to be asked to provide my credit card before being allowed to order. It must be a bar thing. I've never been asked to provide a card up front when seated at a table. But, the oysters were excellent as always. read more

When you travel 700 miles away and that's where your favorite restaurant is and they get you in at 7:30 at night. You know you scored and they have the best crab cakes ever brings me right back to Baltimore when I was a kid. The salmon is absolutely incredible. The shrimp pasta you can't go wrong at this place. The waiters and waitresses are incredible. The ambiance is great. It's just brings you back to something that you just don't see anymore. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone and can't wait to get back to DC to go here again read more

I was not expecting such a positive experience so late at night. So many people had raved about this restaurant and I was quite impressed. While waiting on my partner I was able to engage in casual conversations with the employees in the greeting area. They were very welcoming. Our server was very prompt and nice despite it being later in the night. My partner and I ordered different items to share. Everything was served fresh and was delicious. read more

While visiting Washington D.C., I mentioned crab cakes to a friend and she decided we had to come here for lunch. I'm happy we did. We ordered the fried green tomato and the crab and artichoke dip for appetizers. The crab and artichoke dip was delicious along with the bread they provided. The table ordered the crab cake sandwich, fried chicken rice bowl and the crab cake classic. Everything was delicious! The food tasted fresh and it felt that how the food is prepared matters. Our server was charismatic and she was fabulous! It was lunch time on a Monday and it wasI mentioned crab cakes to a friend and she decided we had to come here for lunch. I'm happy we did. Great spot for a quick beer! Sat at one of the bars because the wait for a table was incredibly long so make sure to make a reservation ahead of time. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive. The artwork is amazing and the vibes are fun! I wasn't fully hungry but I still ordered food to get the full experience. The steak was perfectly cooked and paid very well with the chimichurri sauce. However, the Mac and cheese was very disappointing.. super bland and lacked flavor, I don't recommend ordering it. read more

Made a reservation for here at 9:00 for breakfast. I had seen the breakfast menu online and it looked solid - so we stopped in and checked in. I had looked online before for a breakfast menu but with us coming on a Saturday the menu was brunch instead. Eating at 9am is definitely too early for a burger but - Ordered the breakfast sandwich, which came with a breakfast potato sautéed with peppers and onions. The sandwich was really good -- even with lettuce and tomato on top of the egg and bacon cheese and avocado. The potatoes were ok. I also added a side of the hot honey carrots - which were very flavorful and I enjoyed. Our waiter did a really good job with everything and was very attentive. Would like to come back here for dinner, will be on the short list for next trip. read more

Quintessential DC dining experience! This restaurant is a five-star experience in terms of vibes, food quality, and overall experience. While our server was a little low energy, he was attentive and professional. We enjoyed all of the dishes and loved how we could have a table conversation in our booth without yelling, while enjoying the lively hub-bub around us. 10/10 highly recommended. We came here the other night with our kids and everything we ordered was on point, including the drinks. This restaurant has the coolest old school vibe, great AC and Jenny was an awesome waitress! Update: loved it so much, we went back a second time. The NY is the way to go here and the scallops were great too. Not a huge fan of the salmon but that may just be personal preference on my part. Gotta say though, service was lacking this time around. We knew we loved Jenny and expected the same type of service the second time around but our waitress this time seemed like maybe she was just not into her job. We also had a server deliver our desserts by throwing them onto the table (no joke / my kids were very stunned). Maybe they were just very busy on a Sunday night but wow - complete different experience from our first visit. Considered removing a star but I figured 2 employees were just having a bad night... hopefully that is not the norm for them. read more

I have had this place bookmarked for years. I have been accompanying my husband the last couple of years when he visits DC for work and this place is within walking distance of where we usually stay. Finally hubs decided to make a reservation for our recent trip here. Upon walking in, it was overwhelming! I did not expect this restaurant to be so huge! We went up to the host stand and were greeted enthusiastically. We informed them of our reservation and we were led to our table quickly. It was really busy and it took a while for our server to get to us. The first bottle of wine we chose was out of stock so it took time for us to choose another bottle. Once we ordered the next bottle, we looked over the menu and decided to order the Brussel sprouts with burrata as an appetizer. The appetizer arrived quickly and it was really good. For our dinner, I ordered the Butternut Squash Capanelle and hubs ordered the meatloaf. We both enjoyed our entrees and finished everything! We decided to order the bread pudding for dessert, which was delicious as well. Overall, I loved the ambience and the food. Our server was okay with being attentive but very bland on the personality side. read more

This spot was recommended by my friend so I booked a table to celebrate my bfs bday. We had reservations for 6pm but checked in early and they had a table for us. Since we were hungry and finished doing all of our tours and attractions for the day, we checked in at 5:15 and was seated within 10 mins. My bf got the chicken sandwich and i got the scallops dish. He enjoyed his sandwich. The slaw had a good tangy kick to it. He appreciated the white meat in chicken sandwich. I got the scallops with rainbow cauliflower and rice. It was so flavorful. Both dishes were great. Ambiance was nice too. We were seated in the back where it was a bit more quiet. It was a great way to end our day with a good meal. read more

This is a historic establishment and was started in 1856 as a saloon and has housed several Presidents and it is right across from the White House. This is a must try when in DC! You definitely need a reservation here and we came here at 5pm and this place was packed. The decor inside is very classy and it has several nice bars and I do plan on coming back again to experience one of the bars. We were a party of 6 and were seated by the back bar area. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and everything was great and I really liked the Rockefeller oysters. I ordered the crab cake and that was really tasty. They are known for this dish, so make sure you get this when you come here! We also ordered some desserts and I liked everything too! I'd definitely come back here and I can see why it's so popular! We love stopping by Old Ebbitt when we are in DC. Yes, it's busy and loud, but you'll find a seat with a little patience and the vibe is worth it! Bartenders are extremely friendly and attentive and the food is good with generous portions. I especially enjoy the zucchini chips and clam chowder. We also had the fried calamari which was very tasty and a huge serving. Not super conducive to talking to your group much, but its simply a fun time. read more
I made a reservation for a late breakfast and once we arrived, we were seated by the registers which was fine. The server that helped us was very friendly when taking our order. We went with the jumbo chesapeake from their breakfast menu. I had specifically come during breakfast hours as I wanted to try their crab cakes without anything extra. The chesapeake came with 2 crabcakes on top of English muffins and covered with hollandaise sauce. It also came with a side of home fries. We also decided to order the grapefruit brulee on the slide. Those crab cakes were absolutely delicious and I would return just for them. The jumbo lump crab meat used in the crabcakes were sweet, plump and quite large pieces. It was definitely one of my favorite dishes from my DC trip. The home fries needed ketchup to amp up their flavor. The grapefruit brulee was super disappointing. For some reason I had mistakenly thought it would be like a creme brulee but nope it was just a giant grapefruit with caramelized sugar on top. So I paid $9 for a grapefruit and some sugar. The grapefruit was so sour and bitter that I had to force myself to finish it as it was just so unpleasant to eat. I don't even know why it's on the menu because it's just not a good dish. Bathrooms were clean but you could definitely tell it was a bit aged. For such a well known and old establishment, I was expecting the bathrooms to maintain a higher standard like how Rockefeller Center maintains their bathrooms. The toilet paper wasn't even in the holder and just placed on top of the bathroom stall doors. Next to the bathrooms, they have a private dining room probably for events and special guests. read more
What an amazing gem in the heart of DC. I hadn't been here in over 25 years, so I was thrilled to get a few days of exploring DC and a chance to pop in for lunch. I easily made a lunch reservation for 1:00 PM on a Tuesday and was thankful for that reservation when I showed up and the place was packed. The day was dreary and pouring rain, but the energy and vibe inside was cheery and bright. I was seated at a single table and promptly greeted by Jack S. He brought some positive energy and jokes which was nice as I sat rain drenched after walking 3 miles. I very much enjoyed and devoured the Chicken and Grain Salad. It was large and full of tasty things. I thought there was no way I was going to finish it, but it was just THAT good - I couldn't stop. Then Jack talked up the Bourbon-Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding and you know I could not say no to that. Scrumptious! OEG is not inexpensive but you get what you pay for here. Old Ebbitt Grill is the oldest restaurant in DC and is visited by locals and tourists alike. They do take reservations on open table which I highly recommend making. We were here at 10:30pm on December 30 - holiday time yes but also kind of random and the place was packed. We were sat at a cute 2 person booth and the holiday decorations were lovely. My boyfriend and I each got a drink (cocktail and a wine) and ordered burgers. The food and ambiance were great but the service was lacking which is why I removed a star. We barely saw our waiter and I would have ordered another drink if he had actually come by and saw I was out. For this restaurant they had a ton of staff around and I would think would have checked on us at least once. Overall though a nice evening. read more

Really delicious meal! Excellent ambiance & crowd. Elegant energy. Kind service. They made it work for us to be seated at a table because I don't prefer a bar. 5 minute wait on a busy Tuesday evening! There were a couple sophisticated families with their young children entering to dine at 10pm. It's truly an interesting place. The steak was delicious. The salmon was delicious. The curry lentil soup was amazing! The complimentary bread was ok to me excellent to him. The velvet booths are lovely and accompanied by coat racks! Can I get lobster Benedict?
It is not currently on the menu and they will not make substitutions, even if they have the ingredients.
Does it have only one restroom for patrons and staff?
No... there are multiple restrooms
Can I get the Chesapeake Benedict at the Saturday Brunch, although it's on the Breakfast Menu?
What is the wait time for a table during peak hours?
About an hour to an hour and a half. Went last Saturday night and it was about that long.
What's the difference between the lunch and dinner menus?
Quantity. Amount of options. They have different menus for different occasions. It is best to use website to see the lates updated/the seasonal
Do you offer takeout or delivery services?
They offer to go. Not sure on delivery.
Unable to get Friday evening reservations, how likely is it to find open bar seating after 7pm?
It's a busy place you'd be taking a chance !
Can i go together with my baby(8months)?
When there in the spring, I saw several strollers and young babies, toddlers. Staff and patrons seemed quite accommodating.
Do they still serve lobster?
Not currently, but it may return depending on the season.
What's the dress code?
I asked them when we went and they said, everything from a tux to shorts and a t shirt. So, it is whatever you would like. From the feel, though, it's a sort of business casual.
Is there outside seating?
There isn't. But right around the corner is The Hamilton and they do have outside seating. The Hamilton and Old Ebbitt is the same owner thus they have same menu. Great food!!!
Is it quiet during dinner time? Is it a good place for a date?
I think it'd absolutely be a great place for a date! It's a beautiful location, they have delicious food that's served attractively and the service is great too. I would take a date there, but my wife would get angry...
Is the happy hour only at the bar? Should I make a reservation for the late night happy hour?
As far as I know happy hour pertains to the bar (at least when I've gone), but they have at least four bars- one in each room upstairs. I can't remember if there's a bar downstairs.…
Do you need a reservation for a Tuesday evening?
Always make reservations there. That place is usually packed
