We get the hype for this place. The food was delicious and the wait was even better. It's such a cool historical place to dine. We stayed around the corner from this restaurant. Despite how busy it was we had a very short wait time. My daughter and I both had the filet and it was delicious. My husband had a burger and he really liked it. Our flight ended leaving earlier so we informed our server and she was very accommodating.
After some evening events, I stopped into Old Ebbitt Grill for a final cocktail and some bar bites. The large pretzel was executed perfectly--crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, with a balanced amount of salt that wasn't overbearing. The cheese sauce was great for dipping, and the other side sauce had a nice little kick to it. I also ordered the house chili, which was solid and well-done, though nothing extraordinary. Having worked in the building for over a decade, I wanted to leave a reflection on a place I've frequented for so long. The staff here is consistently fantastic, managing the heavy crowds with ease. It remains one of those classic, high-energy spots in DC that carries a distinct "must-see" reputation. That said, I truly miss the old side takeout kitchen that used to operate in the atrium, serving breakfast and lunch to the building's workforce. It was a fantastic setup with daily chef-designed menus, and it was always busy, so it is a shame it didn't last financially. Even with that change, the main bar area remains a reliable, historic staple for a late-night drink and a bite.
Yeah, definitely one of those places to come to if in town. I am skipping straight to dessert and saying right now the carrot cake is top two in my book. I am watering at the mouth thinking about it. Texture, flavor, all of it, absolutely delicious. Lets get back to everything else now. Was a 45-60 minute wait so we went to the back bar which was recommended to us. Beautiful bar with artwork, and I liked the low light setting. Host said expect a text when table is ready. We enjoyed ourselves in the mean time not really looking at the time, but, it did feel strange that we were not called on after an hour. Did see some people being seated that were in the lobby with us so I was expecting soon. I eventually got up and asked and my guess is they took the wrong number down and or forgot about us. But they quickly sat us down and gave us a wonderful server, forgot the gentleman's name but he my only complaint was you could tell when he went out for a cigarette break. The food. - Chowder had amazing flavor. I like it thicker so I added the table bread to it which made it. - Pork chop was spot on. Nice thick cut and the char on top. Perfectly cooked. Leftovers made for a great morning snack before traveling home. - Side of Mac & Cheese, yum. Cheesy just as it should be. But yeah, definitely make a trip here if you can.
I have no clue what the hype is about everything was fine just mediocre. We had a reservation for a weekday lunch after looking at the museums. The host asked "Whose Birthday are we celebrating?" Only for our server to never inquire about it later nor did they do anything for dessert nor were we offered if we wanted to order dessert. Okay so we sit down and there's a hair on the plate at the table. We informed our server and all interactions with her she seemed annoyed and bothered. Never apologized nor said anything about the hair on the plate. The food, bland. We got the calamari which was pretty good found it unique to also have fried peppers in there. I got the Walters Favorite which is a hot pastrami sandwich. It was missing mustard or something to balance out the flavor profile it was just lackluster. Ruben was okay, and the horseradish mayo on the roast beef was too strong. The best thing was probably the oysters (not pictured). We were there for happy hour and got a discount. NOTE: their only happy hour offering is oysters, no drinks. The amount of times we had to flag our waitress down for everything was so frustrating. It was not that busy and Id see her chatting with a coworker on the side. We had to ask for EVERYTHING all while enduring her attitude or feeling like Im bothering her. When we closed out never told us once goodbye or have a good day. Old Ebbitt, please do the following: - Train your staff to prioritize customer service - Hire people that are friendly instead of cold - Season your food - Ensure cleanliness of the facility (forgot to mention, the bathroom had all kinds of paper on the ground!)
Such a classic Washingtonian institution! I have coming here since I was a child and love everything on the menu! We were lucky enough to walk in on a Friday night at 6 PM and we're sat immediately at a two top and have the sweetest waitress! She took such amazing care of us, even hearing my dad say in passing happy birthday to me, and brought out a dessert! The ambiance in old ebbits is just that of a different time, when drinking a martini at lunch and writing a Pulitzer Prize winning article at the same time was a thing! It's so classic
As a solo diner visiting DC, I could not have picked a better spot than Old Ebbitt Grill. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. The inside is huge, full of history, and has that classic old Washington charm that makes the experience feel special from the moment you walk in. I ordered the Reuben and it was absolutely delicious- perfectly balanced, flavorful, and comforting without feeling too heavy. The whipped potatoes were buttery and light, not overly salted and had great flavor! I also tried the oysters, which were incredibly fresh, clean tasting, and high quality with absolutely no fishy flavor. What really elevated the experience was the service. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and made dining solo feel comfortable and enjoyable. You can tell this place has mastered hospitality over the years. Awesome spot all around and easily one of my favorite dining experiences in DC. Highly recommend whether you're with a group or dining alone!
Great spot, walkable from The White House. Lovely decor, kind of old school in a good way. Very family friendly! They have a reasonable kids menu with lots of options and it comes with a drink. The service was excellent - very patient with kids. I highly recommend making a reservation - it was very busy when we went for lunch. If you can't get a res, try to snag a seat at the bar. Grab a delicious drink while you're there.
I was not expecting such a positive experience so late at night. So many people had raved about this restaurant and I was quite impressed. While waiting on my partner I was able to engage in casual conversations with the employees in the greeting area. They were very welcoming. Our server was very prompt and nice despite it being later in the night. My partner and I ordered different items to share. Everything was served fresh and was delicious.
What can be said that hasn't already been said about the Old Ebbitt Grill in Washington DC? The menu is diverse, unique and it's the place to see and be seen for the lunch hour or for dinner. Here's a pro tip, one that a lot of people know. But if you've never been... Lean in... The grill has four different bars with instant seating service in the event. You have a one or two hour wait, just say it it's worth it and it's good.
We arrived here without reservations on a weeknight and got on the waiting list. I've dined here in the past and enjoyed my dining experience here at the oldest restaurant in Washington D.C. The interior decor is beautiful and nostalgic with antiques; paintings and the bar have various taxidermy animal heads that the were caught by a by President Teddy Roosevelt. Our party dined on oysters, lump crab cake, scallops, pork chop and I went for the boneless ribeye. All the food was delicious, and we had a happy ending with the bourbon chocolate chip bread pudding. Service is professional and impressive. Overall, a great dining experience again, and I highly recommend the Old Ebbitt Grill.
Old Abbott Grill is a very classy establishment. with a long history in the Washington DC area. The inside is visually very appealing with wood heavy accents everywhere and beautifully decorated, which adds so much to the overall dining experience. The centrally located bar is absolutely stunning and oozes class adding to the overall ambience of this establishment. For our first meal here, which was during their brunch hour on a Sunday, we had crab cakes, shrimp, and their bacon cheeseburger. As appetizers we also got their zucchini chips and their large pretzel with cheese. All the food was well made and very tasty where our favorite was the crabcakes. Relative to the staff they were friendly, polite, and very professional about their business. Clearly an emphasis for this business was placed on having a first class wait staff, and it showed! Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here albeit at a higher cost than you would pay at many other establishments. The proximity to the White House, the history of the facility and quality of the food comes at a cost, but it was worth it in our opinion as this is a dinner we will remember for quite some time. Also, we had added satisfaction of bringing our grandchildren here where this was definitely viewed as a special occasion for them that grandma and grandpa arranged. Nice!

Great spot for a quick beer! Sat at one of the bars because the wait for a table was incredibly long so make sure to make a reservation ahead of time. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive. The artwork is amazing and the vibes are fun! I wasn't fully hungry but I still ordered food to get the full experience. The steak was perfectly cooked and paid very well with the chimichurri sauce. However, the Mac and cheese was very disappointing.. super bland and lacked flavor, I don't recommend ordering it. read more
This ended up being my favorite meal of our vacation. Our waitress was incredibly helpful throughout. We started with the Bloody Mary, which had the perfect amount of heat and came with huge, impressive shrimp. The scallops were cooked perfectly, and the filet had that ideal crust with a perfect medium center. Their crab cakes were outstanding--the crab was delicate and full of flavor. The mac and cheese was also excellent. I only wish we had been able to dine here a few more times. read more

A New Yorker is rating. it's located Infront of White House. We were told that wait time is around 30min. Then called within 10min through text message. Great services but food was okay..... I wanted spaghetti and they had only 4 options. It wasn't pasta :( Restroom is downstairs no elevator/no seating while waiting. it was pretty crowded but everyone had manners. clean environment everywhere. Amazing place to try while in DC. Stopped in for dinner while attending a conference and was glad I did. Had the boneless rib eye and charred broccolini and was not disappointed. I always get my steaks medium rare and this rib eye was cooked perfectly. Nice char on the outside and very tender. Perfect blend of char, smoke and savory steak. Broccolini was a great addition. Cooked perfectly and had a buttery flavor. Service was great and staff are happy and friendly. Highly recommend this place and would also recommend setting up a reservation as the place can be booked out a ways and if you are planning a good seat you will need one. read more

My first time visiting D.C., and a friend highly recommended Old Ebbitt Grill, I can see why it's a D.C institution. We didn't make a reservation and just went with the flow of the day, fully expecting a long wait. While table wait was long. we lucked out with open bar seating (pro tip: there are bars in all four corners, which makes it much easier for a party of two). We went right at the dinner rush on a Sunday, but the crowd started to ease not long after we settled in. We ordered a half dozen oysters to start, followed by the classic crab cake and a burger simple and classic. But overall solid meal....I'm still thinking about the oysters and crab cake. no pics of the burger, but can never go wrong with a burger. Really glad I got to experience this iconic spot while visiting. Definitely one to add to your D.C. list. read more

I have had this place bookmarked for years. I have been accompanying my husband the last couple of years when he visits DC for work and this place is within walking distance of where we usually stay. Finally hubs decided to make a reservation for our recent trip here. Upon walking in, it was overwhelming! I did not expect this restaurant to be so huge! We went up to the host stand and were greeted enthusiastically. We informed them of our reservation and we were led to our table quickly. It was really busy and it took a while for our server to get to us. The first bottle of wine we chose was out of stock so it took time for us to choose another bottle. Once we ordered the next bottle, we looked over the menu and decided to order the Brussel sprouts with burrata as an appetizer. The appetizer arrived quickly and it was really good. For our dinner, I ordered the Butternut Squash Capanelle and hubs ordered the meatloaf. We both enjoyed our entrees and finished everything! We decided to order the bread pudding for dessert, which was delicious as well. Overall, I loved the ambience and the food. Our server was okay with being attentive but very bland on the personality side. read more

Old Ebbitt Grill is the oldest restaurant in DC and is visited by locals and tourists alike. They do take reservations on open table which I highly recommend making. We were here at 10:30pm on December 30 - holiday time yes but also kind of random and the place was packed. We were sat at a cute 2 person booth and the holiday decorations were lovely. My boyfriend and I each got a drink (cocktail and a wine) and ordered burgers. The food and ambiance were great but the service was lacking which is why I removed a star. We barely saw our waiter and I would have ordered another drink if he had actually come by and saw I was out. For this restaurant they had a ton of staff around and I would think would have checked on us at least once. Overall though a nice evening. read more

Excellent restaurant and great for work or client dinners! The ambiance and food were great! This is a historic establishment and was started in 1856 as a saloon and has housed several Presidents and it is right across from the White House. This is a must try when in DC! You definitely need a reservation here and we came here at 5pm and this place was packed. The decor inside is very classy and it has several nice bars and I do plan on coming back again to experience one of the bars. We were a party of 6 and were seated by the back bar area. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and everything was great and I really liked the Rockefeller oysters. I ordered the crab cake and that was really tasty. They are known for this dish, so make sure you get this when you come here! We also ordered some desserts and I liked everything too! I'd definitely come back here and I can see why it's so popular! I made a reservation for a late breakfast and once we arrived, we were seated by the registers which was fine. The server that helped us was very friendly when taking our order. We went with the jumbo chesapeake from their breakfast menu. I had specifically come during breakfast hours as I wanted to try their crab cakes without anything extra. The chesapeake came with 2 crabcakes on top of English muffins and covered with hollandaise sauce. It also came with a side of home fries. We also decided to order the grapefruit brulee on the slide. Those crab cakes were absolutely delicious and I would return just for them. The jumbo lump crab meat used in the crabcakes were sweet, plump and quite large pieces. It was definitely one of my favorite dishes from my DC trip. The home fries needed ketchup to amp up their flavor. The grapefruit brulee was super disappointing. For some reason I had mistakenly thought it would be like a creme brulee but nope it was just a giant grapefruit with caramelized sugar on top. So I paid $9 for a grapefruit and some sugar. The grapefruit was so sour and bitter that I had to force myself to finish it as it was just so unpleasant to eat. I don't even know why it's on the menu because it's just not a good dish. Bathrooms were clean but you could definitely tell it was a bit aged. For such a well known and old establishment, I was expecting the bathrooms to maintain a higher standard like how Rockefeller Center maintains their bathrooms. The toilet paper wasn't even in the holder and just placed on top of the bathroom stall doors. Next to the bathrooms, they have a private dining room probably for events and special guests. read more

I took my friends here to celebrate their pregnancy and I would definitely recommend it for a family friendly celebration! It was a great environment - very social and family-friendly. We got the zucchini chips to start which were cooked well. The chipotle-buttermilk dressing was necessary to really bring the flavor together. I ordered the steak medium rare and it was perfectly cooked - one of the best steaks I've had in DC so far The shrimp and grits were good but you definitely don't have to go to Old Ebbitt to get something similar or of the same quality The service was super quick - they checked on us consistently and food was served in an efficient manner! read more

I can see why this place was crowded on a cool Sunday morning. We didn't have to wait in line and hit the bar area. I always judge places based on the strength of their Chicken and Waffles. This place had one of the softest Waffles I have ever had. And my amazing bartender recommended their semi spicy syrup which was amazing! I can tell this place might have top chefs working in it because every presentation we had and the food was amazing! I will definitely be coming back here despite the price tag. Really delicious meal! Excellent ambiance & crowd. Elegant energy. Kind service. They made it work for us to be seated at a table because I don't prefer a bar. 5 minute wait on a busy Tuesday evening! There were a couple sophisticated families with their young children entering to dine at 10pm. It's truly an interesting place. The steak was delicious. The salmon was delicious. The curry lentil soup was amazing! The complimentary bread was ok to me excellent to him. The velvet booths are lovely and accompanied by coat racks! Had a great festive dinner here! A dc institution for good reason. Seated in a booth with a perfect window view of the White House, we started off with delicious eggnogs and ice cold oysters. Old Ebbitt Grill is one of those DC staples that never misses. I've been coming for work lunches and dinners for years, but this time it was a girls night with my work bestie and it was exactly the right choice. Service was sharp. Our server kept water glasses full, checked in without hovering, and made ordering drinks and the next course easy. The scallops with risotto were the star. Flavorful, well-cooked, and just the right portion even for my smaller appetite. You never know who you'll see here, but somehow everyone settles in like they belong. It's classic DC energy without the stuffiness. I left happy and I'll be back again soon. read more
I had come here many years ago and always had a fond memory of it so I was excited to come back again. Last time I came was for drinks, which were really good and this time we came for brunch. The restaurant was decked out for the holidays, which is always really nice to see. Great food, our waiter was wonderful, and it's a great place to have a very DC experience since it's so close to all the monuments and the White House. Old Ebbitt Grill was highly recommended by literally everyone I asked about foodie spots in DC. AND BOYYYYYYY.... IT DID US GOOD! We visited twice while in town. The first time was with 9 people, including kids. We had a reservation so getting rested was fairly easy. Unfortunately we were sat in the "new" part of the restaurant, so personally, it took away from the experience a bit. BUT! The food was just divine! We ordered a TON! Raw oysters, oysters Rockefeller (best I've ever had, and I've had a lot!), a few different tin fishes, burgers, more seafood and the meatloaf. Oh the meatloaf! I would swim in that sauce if I could. The service was great! They even catered to our picky kid. Which is difficult to do. As I said, we went back again, but just five of us. We sat near the bar, which helped bring some of that old school feel I missed the first time. Food was just as good as the first time though. I even went back for the oysters and oysters Rockefeller. Ok so this place is constantly recommended online for tourists. As a local, I was skeptical but they consistently deliver some killer food and the atmosphere is nice & cozy. The devilled eggs were fantastic and I also tried some of the Fried Chicken Rice Bowl which honestly blew me away which was very unexpected. Even though the government is shut down, DC is bustling with folks at conferences and meetings. Old Ebbitt Grill was overflowing with people on a Monday night when I arrived with a friend for dinner. We went at around 6pm and are glad we went as early as we did -- without a reservation we only waited about 5 minutes and then got a seat. The place is LOUD. I can't imagine what it's like on a Friday or Saturday night for a happy hour, but just the two of us, it was difficult for us to hear each other. Drinks: They have a pretty good bar selection and variety of brands, which was nice. Food: My friend got a burger and enjoyed it; I ordered the Cobb salad, which was different from other Cobb salads I've had in the past. There was a variety of greens that included bitter greens and radishes (neither of which is typically used in a Cobb salad), which I didn't enjoy. The chicken was delicious, though. For dessert, we each had an overpriced scoop of Haagen Dazs ice cream, which was delicious but dude -- one scoop for the price of a pint. Our server was lovely, but it was super crowded so we did need to ask for a few things several times. So overall just an okay experience for us. read more

We arrived early for our reservation. We waited maybe 5 minutes and then we were seated while we waited for other guests to our party. That was nice. We were able to look at the menu and order drinks while we waited. We were seated outside the restaurant in a business building atrium. I saw mixed reviews. Some like it others don't. I personally did not mind it. It was definitely quieter out there versus inside the restaurant. Seating was very comfortable. Our waiter was fantastic. He was friendly and knowledgeable. He was always available if we needed anything. Our waiter and other staff made sure our plates were cleared and our table remained clean. The food was not only ascetically pleasing but delicious! The plates were beautifully. My daughter raved about her steak and it was perfectly cooked. I enjoyed the fried green tomatoes. My son's turkey sandwich stole the show. It was well put together and all the flavors just melded together. Overall out visit was fantastic and will remain on the list of places to visit when in the area. PARKING: street parking. read more

We had a 8:30pm reservation on a Saturday night and this places was packed!! You couldn't move in the lobby area. They had us wait about 20 minutes to actually be seated. Overall the location is prime by the White House and the ambiance is 10/10 They have huge amounts of dining areas. We were sat at the back bar dining area but it was more intimate and quiet for a date night so we liked it. This was a birthday dinner and the server was very friendly. The crab dip appetizer was just ok. Our entrees were also good and we left very full. Would recommend! read more

First time visiting... good food, good vibes! Kurtis (with a K) was pretty awesome! The supervisor came and checked on us despite how crowded this place was at 10pm! The other staff were awesome, came by and made sure all extra items were instantly removed from the table. I had the pork chop, it was massive but good. I really finished it all as a petite lady. But I did not have an appetizer nor an adult beverage and only ate 1/3 of the Mac & Cheese ( which was nothing to brag about, but not bad). My son has the, Pretzel (delicious and soft), the Steak Frites ( delicious) and the chocolate cake Sundae (very good). My husband had chicken wings and a pasta, he said it was good as well. No adult drinks- it was just too late and we have an early day of museum and monuments tomorrow. Very good experience. Definitely recommend. Something for everyone and a vibe for all! read more
I was told to come here by a friend because it's the oldest bar/restaurant in DC. That intrigued me. I managed to get an 8pm reservation for my last day in the city as a last meal on my trip and I'm so glad I did. I finished my day early so decided to try to go early. I got there around 6:45 and it was packed. The hostess let me know that they'll do their best and I'll get text when my table is available. I was seated in about 15 minutes. My server Scott was awesome. I got the jumbo crab cake, a lemon drop martini and the peanut butter pie for dessert. Everything was absolutely amazing. The crab cake was the best crab cake I've ever had. The chunks of crab were huge. The peanut butter pie was rich and delicious. Since it was just me I couldn't finish it but enjoyed what I could. The restaurant itself is huge. I wasn't expecting it to be so big based on his history. Scott told me that the location moved there in the 70's he believed but a lot of the wood and art was original from 1856. It was really cool to eat an establishment that has been around for 170 years. Definitely recommend making it a stop when you're in DC. read more
For me, it always comes down to the service. I appreciate establishments with history, and I'm sure being a bartender here is a very coveted job, and somewhat prestigious- but why not have these roles and be kind, funny, interesting...this place has snobby and pretentious. We sat at the bar, ordered drinks, oyster shooters...all good. My husband asked the bartender about the oysters and size...to which the gentleman rolled his eyes and gave the "they are oysters so medium maybe some smaller, bigger" Helpful. We seed our own oysters in the PNW so we have questions when trying ones from various efforts, this gentleman had zero interest in discussing. After drinks and oysters it was time for dinner! We kept trying to get his attention to order dinner and when he finally engaged with us he pointed to the three drinks he was making and said "It's going to be awhile, I'm busy." And we said no problem we will take the check. It wasn't that we had to wait, it was the delivery. The whole vibe is they are doing you a favor letting you be there, and the food and drinks aren't good enough to warrant that energy, come on! Some touristy spots are worth the crowd, and the wait. This is not one of them. I could go on, the two gentleman were rude to everyone. The guy next to me ordered his drink three times, they just never made it. He left too. And the couple next to him, the wife was in an argument with one of the bartenders about her food. Instead of placating her, the customer, he argued with her...very bizarre. Good news is we found an amazing restaurant we wouldn't have found if we hadn't left, and we ate there the next two nights! Also want to note the government is shutdown, so things aren't as busy as they usually are, so on a Monday at 7pm it was surprising to have this experience. read more

About an hour to an hour and a half. Went last Saturday night and it was about that long.

Quantity. Amount of options. They have different menus for different occasions. It is best to use website to see the lates updated/the seasonal

They offer to go. Not sure on delivery.

It's a busy place you'd be taking a chance !
Can i go together with my baby(8months)?
When there in the spring, I saw several strollers and young babies, toddlers. Staff and patrons seemed quite accommodating.
Do they still serve lobster?
Not currently, but it may return depending on the season.
What's the dress code?
I asked them when we went and they said, everything from a tux to shorts and a t shirt. So, it is whatever you would like. From the feel, though, it's a sort of business casual.
Is it quiet during dinner time? Is it a good place for a date?
I think it'd absolutely be a great place for a date! It's a beautiful location, they have delicious food that's served attractively and the service is great too. I would take a date there, but my wife would get angry...
Is the happy hour only at the bar? Should I make a reservation for the late night happy hour?
