I'm going to preface that smoking meat ain't easy. Maintaining it to serve throughout the day, even harder. But after 6 generations I would hope for better. I had 3 meat sampler. Brisket, pork ribs and chicken. All were a little dry, especially chicken. But the overwhelming sauce killed it for me. It took away from that natural smoky flavor you want to have in great bbq. I'm sure if it were right off pit and less sauce, it would probably be a lot better. Great service though read more

Underwhelming. Chopped pork sandwich came out like a bad sloppy Joe. It almost looked like the wet cat food paté that I feed my kittens. Mac n cheese was good at first, but halfway through it was almost too cheesy and became a cheese soup because there was an uncomfortable amount of liquid at the bottom. BBQ beans had a very sharp flavor, which I was not fond of. My friend said her brown gravy looked like it came out of a jar from Kroger. She was also unhappy with her food. The booth we sat in was not spacious and the restaurant looked outdated. On the plus side, the staff was courteous and service was quick. From reading the other reviews, I thought maybe my visit was terrible because I didn't try the right food. However I will likely not return. read more

This was absolutely the worst barbecue I have ever eaten. It may have been the worst restaurant food I have ever had. I don't know how they have won awards for their food or how anyone could think it was good. I got a quarter chicken dark meat. It was drenched in sauce. Others talked about a sauce choice, we weren't given one. The chicken was luke warm at best, horribly dry, yet mushy at the same time. I got coleslaw which was watery and tasteless. The potato salad was interesting, but not in a good way. I had to stop eating because of the gag reflex. My son had a combo plate. Mutton, chopped pork and brisket. He asked if the onion rings were made fresh or frozen. They are pre-made frozen (Sysco???) He opted for beans and macaroni and cheese. The pork looked like and tasted like baby food. The macaroni was mushy and the cheese sauce was obviously a dry mix of cheese like stuff and runny, also luke warm. He describe the beans as something out of a can that tasted like someone had added sugar and ketchup. The mutton was dry and stringy. All in all, absolutely awful!!! Run away. Notice after they get a bad review they are flooded with 5 star reviews. This place is a scam. If you have ever eaten real barbecue or real macaroni and cheese, you would hate it too. shame on you for trying to convince people this is the same quality your ancestors served. You have nit honored your family. At some point you need to give up and stop convincing hard working people to waste money at your establishment. Shame on you. Recommended to us by a local, we thought this might be a great barbecue place. However, it was probably some of the most below average barbecue I've ever had. The chicken was super dry, beef brisket seemed to be boiled...or something, chopped pork was way too vinegary and too salty. Beef brisket seemed under cooked, rubbery and overall inedible. I was starving at the time, but only ate a small portion of each and left still very hungry. Bummer! I must say that the staff was nice and the atmosphere seemed fun. We stopped because we had stopped at Moonlight at the start of our trip and the food was so bad that we decided try another place on our way back from our trip so we tried this place and was disappointed. Pulled pork you say, you might want to try blender pulled pork. It was some king of mush I had never had before. When we were asked if we wanted a box, it was a NO. When we went to pay our bill, we were asked if what we thought and there was a long pause. I wanted to say this was the second worst que I had ever had but just didn't want deal with the backlash. On a recent business trip I was searching for some local BBQ to try and Old Hickory showed up on the Yelp app. Ratings decent so couldn't be terrible...my co-worker and I stopped in after work for a bite. My general impression of the place was that the dining room was really dated and dirty. Almost like at one point it should have been a high end steakhouse with the dark woods and carpeted (!?) dining room floor. I watched a waitress accidently spill some BBQ sauce on the floor and promptly rub it INTO the carpet. So...yay carpet. I went with my usual BBQ plate and sides (sides were good) and decided to try the mutton since this was how western Kentucky apparently rolls. It was just OK to me with a consistency like something you get from a crock pot. Same for the pork...not blown away. The waitresses weren't especially friendly either (end of shift?) so getting drinks, ordered, was way harder than it should have been. If I lived in the area I think this would be more of a place I would get carryout from. It seemed better suited to that and with the essentials on a shelf next to the checkout you could bring everything you need home. But alas I don't live here so won't race to get back. The food and service wouldn't have me racing back anyways. read more

I'm baffled that Old Hickory only gets 3 1/2 stars on here. I guess everyone's taste in barbecue is different. But, let me say, this is one of my all time favorite bbq joints. I've been eating here since I was a little girl. My personal favorite is the chopped mutton sandwich with a big ole bowl of the burgoo! The best BBQ ever! Let me preface this by saying that Old Hickory is not a tomato, sweet based BBQ, so if this is the kind of BBQ you are looking for then you probably won't be happy with it. I have grown on up old Hickory BBQ and have had it both as an dining in experience as well as bulk carry out. Either way it is great! They have a good variety to choose from, but my favorite is the sliced pork. You have traditional choice of sides to choose from the accompany your meat and all of them are great. Mouthwatering is all I can say. As I am writing this review I am 3 hours away and sad that I can't go and grab some immediately!! It is worth the drive and you will never find better bar-b-que anywhere else! You have to have a chopped mutton sandwich (with onions and pickles of course) and don't forget a side of burgoo! This is Southern cooking at its finest!! Make sure you come with an empty stomach because the portions will definitely fill you up. Service was great, but everything else was not my cup of tea. I got the three meat combination and here's some pro tips before you begin. DO NOT ask for chopped. For whatever reason I imagined regular bbq like for a sandwich as chopped not puréed in a blender. The chicken was very very dry so ask for more drink before you start. I didn't know what mutton was, but due to the puréed effect I still don't. I looked it up, it is in fact sheep. Whether you try the sweet heat or surprisingly runny regular bbq make sure you come in an old tshirt because it will get you and get you good. No squeezing is needed to make it run from the bottle to your plate and into your lap. Although, we did appreciate the warning beforehand. We added all of our hardly touched items into a box and they brought out banana pudding on the house. It was delightful besides the fact is was too sweet on my empty stomach. We were encouraged to come here over Moonlight barbecue. Never again. One star is for our very sweet server and the second is for bad days and not having tried the chicken strips ‍ Plus the mashed potatoes were pretty good. read more

I walked in and immediately felt at home - it was obvious every one else in the full dining room at 1pm knew each other. Just what I was looking for - the BBQ locals come to eat! I love pulled pork and although they only have 2 choices on the menu (sliced or chopped) my amazing waitress Jane went back and pulled some pork for me! Talk about get it your way! She even brought me a sampling of Burgoo and Mutton! Both were very tasty and I can see why they are famous for both! I would get the pork (ask for the sweet spicy BBQ sauce - AMAZING!) and banana pudding again for sure! The only downfall was no real butter... I'm not a fan of the spreads... Our family of eight was in town to perform at ROMP and to visit the Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum. We were told this is the BEST bbq in town and they weren't kidding!!! I had just had mutton and pork the night before at Moonlite so I ended up trying the catfish, mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. It was really good catfish I must say. The server was friendly and energetic. It looks hole in the wall-ish, which in my opinion is not a bad thing at all. We went with the intention of getting the mutton. Upon entering the restaurant a sign said to seat yourself. The four of us sat down and waited while several waitresses walked around, looked at us, and kepted walking without any acknowledgement. The restaurant was empty. After five minutes of this we finally decided to leave and go elsewhere. Upon leaving, we noticed four waitresses sitting at booth near the kitchen. They looked at us leaving but quickly went back to their conversation. So sad. This used to be a good place to eat. But the service level has obviously taken a big hit. read more
