My wife and I dined here for our anniversary this weekend and we had an exceptional experience at Old Hickory Steakhouse, and Jesse made the experience even better. From the moment we sat down, Jesse was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about what he does. He knew the menu inside and out, and every recommendation he made, from the appetizers to the steak and sides, was spot on. Everything he suggested was fantastic. He was attentive without hovering, always there when we needed something, and made us feel like valued guests the entire evening. I highly recommend the dry-aged cowboy ribeye with the oxtail sauce. For sides, we got the loaded fingerling potatoes with salmon roe and the Brussels sprouts. The only complaint I have is that the room we were in was loud because there was a large party with screaming children but other than that we really enjoyed our evening. read more

I'll state this up front - the Filet Mignon (medium rare) was, quite literally, the best I have ever had. Okay, now for some details. We did a staycation at the Gaylord and decided that it'd been a while since we had a good steak so made reservations right away. Our reservations were for 5:30, they open at 5, so we were seated right away. The restaurant is welcoming, slightly upscale, and comfortable (we had one booth seat and one chair at our table). It looks like they may offer outdoor seating, but that's just a guess based on my brief look in that direction. Right by the host stand is a refrigerator with meat/fish on display. While we didn't order drinks, they looked to have a well-stocked bar. Our waiter was David, he was friendly and helped to answer any questions that we had about the menu and my allergies. Because I have the appetite of a bird, we decided to order the Sourdough Boule (aka round bread) and split the Filet Mignon. The sourdough bread was quite good. My only complaint is the butter, the flavor was really good but they serve their butter with their initials. While it is snazzy looking, it requires the butter to be kept at a temperature that isn't optimal for spreading butter on bread. I'm always annoyed when the butter isn't served soft enough to easily spread on your entire piece of bread. Otherwise, both the bread and their special honey, tallow, sea salt butter were very good. Like I said we split the Filet - medium rare. It was cooked PERFECTLY. It was so delicious. SO. Delicious. I dare say it is the best Filet Mignon that I have *EVER* had. E.V.E.R. I swear-to-all-you-consider-holy, after my second bite I regretted suggesting we split it (but after I finished my half I was glad that's all there was). It was so good that the second night we almost went back (we didn't, instead we went to Growlers - which I'll review separately). Transportation/Parking Parking - They do offer valet parking and have a parking garage (I believe that both are for a fee, and any validation they do at dinner is not for the entire amount). I believe there was free on-street parking and there's a gravel lot in between the Gaylord & the marina that people were parking in. Trolley - About a 20 minute walk from the Blue Line trolley. It's a straight shot down H Street, and I believe it's sidewalked the entire way. Ferry - There is a ferry from the SD Convention Center to the marina beside the Gaylord. It's $15 one way. At the time, there is no sidewalk connecting the marina to the hotel. It is a short walk and not too busy with traffic. Will we be back? First time to try this place, we were 15 in the group. It was my late birthday celebration. The food took so long to get to our table . Good thing we ordered appetizers. For the most part, most of us liked what we ordered. Except for one friend of mine ordered Marinated Bison Ribeye and she said it was very greasy. I ordered Dry Aged Blue Fin Tuna and I loved it. Really aesthetic dishes, just poorly executed on flavors. The salmon was really greasy (and there was something funky on mine)... and was not de-boned properly. I had a lot of fish bones I needed to pick out as I was chewing. I've had their filet mignon before and it's very over salted and not as tender as one would expect from this cut. My favorite thing here is the sourdough bread and butter. The old fashioned was awful - don't fall for their "signature" marketing. The ambiance is nice, open and modern with a large tree in the center of the restaurant. I recommend grabbing a drink before or after at the lobby bar before making your way here for dinner. The Old Hickory is the very upscale steakhouse, located in the Gaylord Hotel and Spa. The food and service is top notch and it can give those better name chains a run for their money. No pun intended. We came here recently and were wowed by it all. Our server was attentive but never hovered. Everything was very professional. We started with two glasses of Pinot and some Parker house rolls. For our entrées, we went with the Tomahawk Steak, Pork Chops and I went with the Waygu Beef Tartare. Located inside the Gaylord hotel in Chula Vista. Take a right after entering. Lets start with the positives, the apps! The seafood tower and bread were great. However, its all downhill from there. First, the food took over an hour to come out. The restaurant was not very busy that night. Next, value for money is definitely not there. While the tomahawk steak was decent, it did not have the quality of a $200 steak. The flavor was not rich, and was not cooked very evenly through. I ordered a medium steak and most of it came out well done. (some parts were rare) Finally, the restaurant validated our parking, as they said they would. But what they did not mention is that we would still have to pay over $35! If I had known this, plenty of street parking was available. read more

It was more beefy than oniony and wasn't very hot. There were some crunchy croutons in the soup, which was good, but I missed the onions and especially the cheese! The apricot and almond dessert was tasty. Those items plus a martini and the large pour of Sauv Blanc came to $150 before tip. I asked for tap water but they served me a bottle for $9. Old Hickory Steakhouse is the flagship restaurant at the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center in Chula Vista. There was a sign on the southward facing side of the structure that indicated where it was located in the complex. I was told by an operator that if you order an entree, they will validate two hours of self parking in the multi-level deck on the back of the property. That will save you at least $10. Lucky for me, there was an empty spot in the row of free spaces directly across from the main driveway. When you entered the lobby, this restaurant was to the left. Hanging in a refrigerated dry locker to the left of the hostess stand were various meats and fishes on display. The ambiance felt more like a mid-level bar and grill as opposed to an upscale steakhouse. No tablecloths were used, and the furniture was less than impressive as another reviewer had mentioned that they were uncomfortable. A two-sided menu was given to me as I was led to a small table in the main dining area. Chilled seafood, starters, salads, and soups were on one side. The flip side listed the land and sea, grilled offerings, and accompaniments/sides. Prices were at a premium highlighted by a 32 oz tomahawk steak showcased tableside for $225. I started my dinner with the Charred Spanish Octopus from the five choices of starters. The grilled tentacle was served on a bed of bucatini pasta with garlic cream sauce, fennel oil, and espelette glaze. The octopus was a bit chewier than I liked, however I loved the noodles and sauce. For an entree, I stayed away from the steaks and opted for the Mary's Farm Duck. Honey and spice were applied to two pieces of duck breast which was drizzled with fig and port wine jus. A duck fat potato terrine was the side that came with this dish. At least 20 layers of thinly sliced potato were used to make the terrine. The flavors on the duck were terrific as I enjoyed the medium rare cooked meat. It made me glad that I skipped the beef in favor of this poultry item. My server (Nicholas) was enthusiastic and chatty with each of his tables. It made for great engagement, however it took time to catch his attention when he was busy talking to other customers. After dining here, I can see why there have been very polarized viewpoints of the experience at Old Hickory Steakhouse. With its high prices, I don't think the quality was top notch, therefore the value and my overall rating were at a three star level. read more

They want to uphold a classy , high end experience. Seafood Chowder was more like a few pieces of seafood with a little broth. The broth or "soup" was very thin did not give a soup consistency. I ordered the rigatoni Mac and cheese and the waiter brought out some disgusting looking red and white pasta. I said I ordered rigatoni he said oh well they told me last minute they were out of rigatoni pasta. I responded, You couldn't have communicated that to me before serving that disgusting plate? Maybe giving me another option. That pasta was the worst thing I have eaten. I order the 22oz ribeye steak, 60 percent was fat , waste of $98. Super friendly and attentive staff. Allen and Adam did a great job taking care of us. Wasn't too busy at 5pm but the bar area did eventually fill up. Bar opens at 5pm, food available around 5:30pm. They had a good Paloma and a good Marg. A few beers on tap but nothing that caught our eye. Beet and burrata is served without greens, a bit under-seasoned but lots of beets and whipped burrata. The pistachios added a great crunch, though. The Wagyu bone marrow was well-seasoned and had great flavor! Puffed rice was a nice touch, but 3 of the 4 pieces we got were stale. The bone marrow could've been warmer because it was solid and white, so not super appetizing. But again, flavors and presentation were there but could work on execution. Loved that the Octopus came with some Bucatini, but must admit the octopus was a little chewy. Sauce was good, had fennel and a green onion bulb. Beautiful restaurant. Old Hickory Steakhouse is a truly beautiful restaurant in the new Gaylord in Chula Vista. Ambiance is bright and open, which contrasts dark enclosed steakhouses. I base my reviews on value - my expectations for a $5 meal are very different from a $50 meal. So with that in mind, Old Hickory is okay but not yet great. It is very new, so there are a few details missed, but I'm confident these rough edges will be smoothened out over time. The food was really good. We started with the Parker House Rolls and Spanish Octopus - both were delicious and didn't disappoint. For entrees we ordered the 32 oz Tomahawk, 3 oz A5 Japanese Wagyu, and 8 oz Filet Mignon. Steaks were all delicious, but served a tad over the desired temperature (Medium instead of Medium Rare). We also ordered the Duck Fat Fingerling Potatoes, but these were the only disappointment. I would avoid this side dish as it was nothing special. Service was pretty good and attentive. Ava and Eddie were on point and took good care of us. They helped celebrate my early birthday with a complimentary Chocolate and Caramel dessert which was delicious. There were some hiccups, where we had to request new plates and silverware. They just opened about 4 months ago. I think their food is pretty good. We got the app and entree combo for $48. Tiger prawn cocktail and rib eye. I think the prawn cocktail was perfectly done, no changes. The rib eye was good and very tender. Only thing was I think the sauce was too salty. I'm sorry, chef! Both of our dishes were delicious and surprisingly light, which was perfect since we wanted something nice before heading to bed. If I'd been hungrier, I might've ordered something more filling, but the bread and butter honestly stole the show, I could've easily eaten another loaf! For dessert, we shared the raspberry dessert, which was unique and so good -- not your typical sweet but really flavorful and refreshing. We didn't have reservations, but they offer open seating. The server was so kind and let us know a high-top would open soon, so we waited about 20 minutes. It was worth it, he even helped us move once the table was ready. Dine & Dash? LOLOLOL Tourist Trap, not for locals. Locals can do so much better at virtually ANY other San Diego Steak House. Off the top of my head, I can think of three. The rock-hard butter needed a chisel to cut with, as a knife is not sufficient for their "Parker rolls". The seats were actually uncomfortable. Fat boys (Like me) will be uncomfortable with this Plastic furniture. Parking the car should be free, but it is not. It costs almost as much as the tip for the waiter. At least $85 per person with coffee, dessert, and apps, taking you to nearly $100, and cocktails? So let's figure $125 per person just to be safe, i.e., Car Parking Valet, Tip, Tax, etc. I've lived here since 1979, and I know I can do better than this place. I miss the Red Fox, Remy, and Theresa. I enjoyed the food and customer service at the Old Hickory Steakhouse. The venue is very loud and very family friendly. Attire runs the gambit from T-shirts to resort wear to business casual, not unexpected for a hotel venue. Our table of 4 shared the Oysters (6) and the Sour dough Boule with tallow butter as appetizers and the Tomahawk and Duck breast for our main meal, with crab creamed spinach, sautéed mushrooms, and the rigatoni mac and cheese as sides. For drinks we shared a bottle of the 2020 Stag's Leap Petit Sirah. The Tomahawk is carved at the table, it came cooked to order medium rare. Be open minded to the atmosphere. It does get very loud but the quality of the food and the friendly and attentive table service easily overshadow that downside. Didn't have any plans for Xmas this year so we decided to try Xmas dinner at the Old Hickory Steakhouse located in the newly built Gaylord resort. We arrived for our reservation at 5:15pm and were promptly seated. The restaurant only had another couple in it at that time but it filled up by the time we left two hours later. The dinner menu was a three course prix fixed menu at $145 and included three wine pairings in that price, which was a steal. Here is a list of all the courses and options we were offered. Very creative. For our appetizer I chose the Quail while my friend chose the lobster salad. The quail was cooked perfectly and the accompanying cornice pear was just delicious but the lobster salad was chopped lobster in a mayonnaise dressing and was average. For the main course I got the filet mignon and my friend selected the Bass fish. The steak was a good 8oz serving and cooked perfectly to medium. The fish was a rather sizable and thick portion which we found upon our first bite to be undercooked. The staff were apologetic and took it back to be fixed and returned five minutes later with the fish beautifully cooked. They (including the chef) were also very apologetic for the error, which I thought was really nice of them. Both of the meals we thought were outstanding. The pre desert was an orange crush palette cleanser that was so yummy that I would have enjoyed it as a desert even. For the desert I selected the snowball fight which came on a plate with a painting of a boy flinging a snowball. Very cute. My friend ate the chocolate desert and that was the better of the two choices as the snowball was mostly coconut shavings on a chiffon cake and not that appetizing. Such a disappointment. Came here to celebrate a 30th bday for my gf and if I could sum up this experience in one phrase, it would be: a McDonald's wrapped in a steakhouse. From start to finish, this was one of the most disappointing and overpriced meals I've had in a long time. First, the service was abysmal. We had to flag down multiple servers just to get basic attention. Our actual server was running around like a chicken with her head cut off, which made simple requests unnecessarily difficult. For a restaurant charging premium prices, the level of professionalism was shockingly low. No high end steakhouse standards of service anywhere. The two martinis we ordered (the same drink, mind you) arrived looking and tasting completely different one of them barely even half full. At this price point, consistency and attention to detail should be a given, not a luxury. Then came the food. We ordered the "wagyu steak tartare" only to be served a cooked version, which completely defeats the purpose of tartare. Either the kitchen doesn't know what they're doing, or they assume the customers don't. Either way, not great. We ordered the sourdough, and after 15/20 mins of waiting they came back to tell us they were out. We got the Parker rolls instead and it seemed like Hawaiian rolls thrown in a pan and salted. However, even those came out cold in the middle and had to send them back. Only thing worth ordering may have been the oysters! Served with a pomegranate mignonette. To top it all off, the entire place had a vaguely fishy odor lingering, which was not only unpleasant but also totally unappetizing -- especially for a steakhouse. For the prices they charge, this spot should be delivering a refined and memorable experience. Instead, it felt like a sloppy, confused attempt at fine dining. With this place being so new they have time to hopefully fix things but for now I'd strongly recommend looking elsewhere if you're seeking quality food, good service, or anything remotely worth your money. 5 star food!!! Pork chop was perfectly cooked and paired great with the maple au poivre. Tallow butter and bread, holy cow. Seafood chowder was SO good, would have liked it more on the hotter side. Atmosphere needs some work for the price point. I know they are going for a Coastal vibe, but I felt like I was in a cafeteria, and it was SO loud. I know it's a family resort, but screaming kids does detract a little. Some sound mitigation would be nice. I remember when Breakfast Republic opened up at Nado golf course had the same issue...they fixed it. Also Loews top floor had a good coastal vibe with views and nice lite without losing the atmosphere you expect with that price point. Came for a New Year's Eve dinner. The service was very good through the whole experience. We were greeted with complimentary champagne on arrival while we waited for our table. We got a little oyster as a welcome from the chef. We had the scallop appetizer, it was very acidic but was good. We had the filet and the dry aged NY Strip, both were ordered medium but were overcooked, they barely had pink in them. The filet was still perfectly tender but had a weird seasoning on it that was not on the NY. Both came with a little salad on top. The creamed spinach with crab was one of the best spinach sides I have ever had. The panacotta dessert was a nice end to the meal. When it comes down to it when you are dining at this price point you will get a higher quality steak at Stake (Coronado), Flemings or Ruths Chris but I guess we also need to remember this is a hotel restaurant. read more

If the pictures don't say it all; let me spell it out for you -- this place is all the hype! Menu prices are definitely on the higher side, but expected for the quality of the food. Two friends and I staycationed here during the week and were told my staff this was the must try spot, so to avoid any issues booked a reservation for that night...it was a Wednesday night so we had no issues getting the time we wanted day of. The staff from the hostess to be the server were polite, knowledgeable, and (even for being a more high end restaurant) found a way to make dinner entertaining. We opted for cocktails to start the evening with some started; rolls and the beet and burrata salad and the Dungeness crab salad. Decided to splurge on the 21 day aged cowboy ribeye paired with asparagus, Brussels, and Mac n cheese -- this' called for a nice bottle of red. The flow of food service was perfect and everything tasted great, Brussels likely being the one item I could do without. Felt like I walked into an episode of White Lotus. The Good Old Hickory is tucked inside a gorgeous new resort in San Diego, and the whole experience felt elevated and cinematic. The staff were passionate about the restaurant's story, walking us through the menu with care and detail. The food was fantastic--thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. And the overall vibe? The Gaylord Pacific just opened a couple of weeks ago and I was so excited to stay at my first Gaylord. Rather than leaving the property, I chose to sit at the bar and enjoy the Old Hickory Steakhouse, located just inside past the valet area. The restaurant has a spacious bar and lounge area which was the perfect setting for me. I had a great bartender, Rasheeda, who took very good care of me. Ordered a dirty martini and she definitely knew how to shake the shaker to get the martini ice cold! My only complaint is the lack of blue cheese stuffed olives which should be the standard for a high end steakhouse. Ordered the scallop crudo to start which was light and amazing! For my main dish, I got the petit filet (medium) with a side of the Chimichurri sauce and the Mac and Cheese. Steak temp was perfect, but the meat quality did not feel high quality compared to some of the steakhouses I've experienced in Vegas for the same price point. Expected the petit filet to be a bit more tender and juicy rather than dry and crispy. Chimichurri sauce and Mac definitely hit the spot. Overall the experience was wonderful because the staff was awesome and even open to my feedback since they had just opened. Would definitely try this place again! read more

I ordered the Lamb Rack and received the Duck. I was the first person out of 3 to order. My mom's Butter Poached Lobster & My son's Lemon Pepper Halibut came out fine but my order was delayed by a good 15-20 minutes. I was hungry and very irritated by this. In addition to this my water glass remained empty for way too long and the waiter forgot to bring utensils so my mom had to wait to eat her lobster. I was initially going to give a one star review but a different waiter by the name of Eddy was extremely helpful and made the experience a little better. When the check came they didn't offer a small discount or anything despite them knowing they f*cked up, instead we got an "oops, hope your food was good". The place is very nice and super clean, but I doubt I will ever come back. read more

Old Hickory Steakhouse - Lamb Rack - Steakhouses Near Me - Chula Vista, California

The Old Hickory Steakhouse is a new restaurant located inside the newly built Gaylord Pacific Resort in Chula Vista. The restaurant is run by none other Executive Chef Josh Mouzakes (who formerly founded Arlo). Together with his new team, Chef Josh is bringing a special flare to the San Diego location menu. When you first enter the restaurant, you are greeted by the maître d, and next to the "check-in" podium were the dry-age cases showcasing some of the meats that are dry-aged in-house (beef, duck and selected fishes including bluefin tuna). The ambiance was like most fine dining steakhouses, noise levels were low-moderate,(still able to hear each other converse without having to shout across the table). There are private dining rooms in the back of the restaurant, but the main dining room had an orange tree right in the center. In terms of attires, most patrons were dressed business-casual, with some guests in their resort wear ( aloha shirts/ dresses and sandals). Our waitress for the evening was Polly. She was fabulous and took such great care of us. We started off with cocktails/ mocktails: 1.) Ember& Oak Old Fashioned 2.) Carlsbad Collins 3.) Pearl Diver's Punch 4.) Shirley Temples (for the kids). Food we tried are as follows: 1.) Parker house roll 2.) Seacuterie 3.) Wagyu beef tartar 4.) Old Hickory Charcuterie board 5.) A5 Japanese Wagyu 6.) 21-Day Dry Aged 22 oz Tomahawk Ribeye served with assortment of sauces (Hickory-rye oxtail sauce, wagyu chimichurri and smoked bearnaise) 7.) Sides are a la carte. We orderedDuck fat fingerling potatoes, rigatoni Mac & Cheese, and crab creamed spinach and Swiss chard. For our starters, we tried the Parker Rolls, Seacuterie, the charcuterie board and steak tartar. The rolls came out nice and hot, fluffy and pillowy in the center. They were topped with roasted garlic honey butter and sprinkles of smoked sea salt, and served with herb butter.Very tasty. The Seacuterie was a fun spread. The platter consisted of premium tinned fish from the FishWife company and served with house made octopus, variety of olives and potato chips. I must say, I did not know that canned fish can taste this good. It was a fun dish. We also enjoyed the Wagyu steak tartar. The roasted bone marrow and cracklings elevated the dish with contrast of textures. The tartar was served on a beef femur bone and beautifully presented on a wooden pedestal. A very artistic touch. In addition chef sent out the Old Hickory charcuterie board for us to try. Loved all the cured meats and the house pickles and olives. The biggest highlight of the evening was when the Japanese A5 wagyu and the dry aged tomahawk steak came out. The steaks were cooked perfectly medium rare and melted in your mouth, very tender. The Japanese wagyu was like butter! 3 oz went a long way as it was rich. The kids enjoyed every bit of it. In terms of the dry aged tomahawk ribeye, it was very flavorful! The steak was sourced from Snake River Farms (SRF). The different sauces added a nice touch and complemented the steak beautifully. My favorite was the oxtail sauce (similar to a Demi-glacé). The meal was well paced, and not once did we feel rushed. Lastly, we ordered two desserts, a blueberry pane cotta and the other was a raspberry crème fresh tort with buttermilk ice cream. Both were very light and refreshing after a rich meal. The evening was completed when Chef Josh gave my son and I a tour of the kitchen. It was a well oiled machine in there! We recently celebrated our anniversary here. The servers and managers were excellent! So was the ambiance. My favorite dish was the crab salad. Our main entrees, the aged ribeye and regular steak, didn't have much flavor. The steak sauce didn't do much to add to the flavor. We make better steaks at home. Despite the extensive wine list, there were no dessert wines. I like sweet wine, so there were no options for me. When we made the reservations, we indicated that we were celebrating our anniversary. Upon checking in, the hostess acknowledged that this was a special occasion. I thought we would get something like a piece of cake. We received nothing. So why ask if we were celebrating something if you aren't going to do anything about it? There really was no follow through. That was disappointing. For the money we spent, we really should have had a better dining experience. read more

My husband surprised me with dinner at Old Hickory Steakhouse last night and it did not disappoint. We found easy parking along the hotel that was free until 1030 p.m. but did see valet for 0-2 hours was $30 as an FYI. He had made a reservation on Open Table and we were greeted promptly by the kind hostesses. They welcomed us and seated us immediately at a table that had a lovely view of pool area and sunset. From there we were introduced to our awesome server, Moses! Moses was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt in his service, not to mention he made fantastic recommendations for sides/desserts that did not disappoint. First we had the little wedge salads and it was light and flavorful and the Parker house roll that came with a delicious herb butter and sea salt spread. For our dinner, we ordered the dry aged ribeye and the 8oz filet mignon with the rigatoni Mac (SO GOOD) and cheese and the duck fingerlings (yummy but it's a lot so recommend only if a table of four IMO). The steaks were cooked perfectly, the plating was beautiful. We enjoyed beer and a glass of Willamette Valley Pino Noir. Along side Moses was Christian who assisted and always kept our water full and table clear. For dessert, not sure how we had room but the chocolate one was incredible! Some type of chocolate poppers with the sea salt ice cream and foam - a pleasant explosion of flavors that I am still thinking about. Bathrooms are very nice, clean and private stalls. They also have their own in house dry age room under the restaurant! I wish I took photos of the food, but I was so delightfully present in the moment of enjoying our meal and exceptional service! Thank you to Moses, Christian, kitchen staff and the team of runners who made our dinner memorable. We will absolutely be back. This was our experience after them only being open two weeks, can't wait to see the growth as they get more time under their belts - they have a great starting place! read more

Everything about Old Hickory was great time. From check in till dessert you feel taken care of. Ended up sitting outside with my family of 4. Everybody loved their meals but at the end we all agreed that the porterhouse steak was the one we were all coming back for.
