When I go out to eat, I usually order things I don't typically make at home. I make steak pretty often and can make a great one myself, so I rarely order steak at restaurants--but Rare Society is the exception. I absolutely love the variety of their steak boards. You get 4-5 different cuts of meat, including Wagyu options, so you can sample a little bit of everything. It's by far my favorite thing to order here. Came here with friends for dinner. I started with one of their signature cocktails, the Hot streak, blanco tequila, dried pineapple, lime, jalapeño and basil. Basically a spicy pineapple margarita, it was delicious, the pineapple stood out and so did the spiciness of the Jalapeño. It was both sweet and spicy. Got the Hamachi crudo which came with curry aioli, pickled pineapple, peanut crunch, yuzu and Serrano peppers. It was ok, pretty standard hamachi sashimi in a ponzu type sauce. The Hamachi was tender and the sauce flavorful but not so different than any other you've had. Shrimp Cocktail came on a bed of ice and nicely cooked. Firm and sweet. Dusted with old bay and came with lemon and cocktail sauce. Oysters on the half shell also came on a bed of ice. They were fresh and briny. There were two types; east and west coast they were notably different. One was more briny than the other, I cant remember which. It came with mignonette, horseradish, hot sauce and lemon. I only needed lemon. they were fresh and went down easy! It's listed as Bacon on the menu but it is the furthest thing from bacon. It's basically a slow cooked tender pork belly sliced to about 3/4" then glazed with a soy/gochujang sauce under the broiler and topped with chives. Super tender and tasty with a little heat from the gochujang. A definite must! BBQ dry aged meat balls: A mixture of pork and beef, I thought were good but not as special as the Bacon. They were meaty and flavorful but I think if you're getting a steak you can get your meat fix there. The Parker house rolls were amazing! They came in a cast iron skillet topped with truffle butter and herbs, They were so soft and airy and the truffle butter was so good. Im not usually a fan of truffle butter, it's often too strong a flavor but somehow this was very good and balanced. Caesar salad, says comes with "a lot of pecorino" man they weren't kidding! It was covered in cheese! I liked the crispy romaine lettuce, cheese, and croutons, it came with a fried anchovy which I didn't really care for. It was a nice touch and very different but I guess im not a fan of straight up anchovies, I prefer them mixed into a sauce where they just add saltines and flavor. I guess if I took a small bite with each bite of salad. I got the 16 oz cedar river prime ribeye. It was super tender and cooked to perfect medium. We got a bunch of sauces but they were not necessary. My friends loved the creamy horseradish, I think it just covers up the steak. I feel like most places under temp there steaks these days. USDA medium rare is 130º which is a pink center, most places go by sight or feel which is a red center. So I always go with medium which is think is actually 130º (USDA medium rare). For sides we shared Shell Mac, which was very cheesy and gooey! Excellent granted that I don't usually like Mac and cheese. Whipped potatoes were very smooth. too smooth for me in fact, but my friends liked it a lot. Truffled creamed spinach again very smooth and creamy and I loved the truffled flavor which I usually don't like. Maybe they use actual truffles or truffle powder rather than truffle oil. IDK but it's unusual for me to like truffled items. For dessert we got the butter cake and brookie tart. The butter cake came topped with sourcream ice cream, the cake was soft and buttery and ice cream was smooth and creamy. I preferred the brookie tart, the chocolate cookie/brownie had a nice crunch and a good chocolate flavor. The chocolate ice cream further enhanced the chocolate flavor while adding a nice contrast in texture. if you like vanilla then go for the butter cake if you like chocolate go for the brookie tart. Rare Society is a smaller steak house, run by the Trust group and chef Brad Wise. Service was great, very attentive. There is no private lot but I easily found parking on the street on a week night. The standouts were the Bacon, Parker house rolls, steak, shell Mac, truffled creamed spinach. and brookie tart. I'd highly recommend reservations. read more

Came in here to enjoy the happy hour: it starts right at 5 and is only available for bar seating. I would come in early or prepare to wait since these spots are limited. The prices are reasonable $10 cocktails and food deals. The food was good, very fresh tasting, and HOT (which I really appreciate). Amazing stake house!! We came to celebrate my friend's birthday and we were all blown away. For appetizers we got the house rolls, ceasar salad and the blue crab dip. We also had the filet, the wagyu tri tip, mushrooms, and the bananas foster cheesecake and creme brulee. Oh and a Moscow mule that I don't recommend as it doesn't even come in the copper cup, if you appreciate a Good mule. The steaks were very average. My husband loved the mushrooms, they come with an egg yolk on top. We've been to Rare Society a few times now. Each time we've had a great time, but the last time we were here we had an outstanding server name Abraham. He was very attentive, especially to the two toddlers we had. He brought out kids cups right away without us asking, and something that really impressed me was when he noticed my son trying to eat the ice cubes, he brought him a cup of crushed ice instead which he we thought was so nice. He was very friendly and talkative and we enjoyed having him as our server. Food was also exceptional. My MIL raved about their Caesar salad. We ordered associate board and added the bone in ribeye. First time eating here and it did not disappoint! Reservation was easy through open table. Location is annoying, and parking is only available on the street. My partner and I got lucky booking a Sunday dinner, we arrived early and found parking easy. Luckily they weren't too busy and sat us early as well! I thought this restaurant would be way bigger! I noted the patio seating, but it didn't seem fun on such a main street. Inside was very loud, I almost think, the way the flow of the restaurant is set up, the noise just carries. Our server Xenia was an absolute dream! So knowledgeable and friendly, she recommended a great wine and answered all of our questions. The menu is awesome, everything sounds delicious, it is hard to choose, & everything we ordered was in fact incredible. We ordered the Ahi Tuna, the Cesar Salad, the Lamb lollis, the Wagyu Tri Tip, the broccolini, the potatoes au gratin, and ricotta ravioli. Every single dish stood out, the flavors were so awesome. The only complaint, if you could even call it that, was that I did not feel the flavors all -went-together. The wonderful lemon dressing that came with the charred broccolini was so different from the potatoes au gratin that coated your mouth in cheese! The potatoes tasted great with the Tri Tip that had a beautiful crust full of flavor, but didn't go well with the ricotta ravioli in bolognese sauce. Each individual dish was a star but together it didn't feel aligned. Finally, for dessert, we ordered a Brookie Tart and their Strawberry Chamoy Sorbet. Both were amazing and totally worth it. We were seated immediately after arriving at 5pm. The ambiance was nice and the lighting wasn't too dark. Our server was extremely knowledgeable on the menu and helped us navigate what we were feeling for a meal. He also helped us choose a bottle of wine to pair with our main course. After we shared the Caesar salad and were thrilled with the real fried anchovies and copious amounts of pecorino cheese. My husband ordered the wood-fired lobster tail appetizer; after tasting it though we decided the scampi butter was overpowering the smoked flavor. We agreed simple melted butter would've allowed the flavor to shine more. Plus the amount of meat wasn't worth the price in our opinion. For our main, their famous Executive Steak Board was what drew us to them in the first place so we ordered that to share. The Ribeye and Filet were delicious but the NY Strip was overly chewy. The steaks were delicious by themselves but the beef tallow butter was a favorite. Next time we will down size to their smaller steak platter however since we ended up with a few pieces left. The first red flag was I did not smell any indications of any wood fire grilling going on. Even with an industrial hood the smell would at least linger to the dining area. The Executive Board looked amazing but once again the lack of taste and smell of the familiar red oak that I've come to love just wasn't there. Wondering if these steaks come off a gas grill or even a broiler? Our dry age ribeye did not taste dry age- these are flavors I know only too well. Just wow! This is a MUST try steakhouse in San Diego. My partner and I went for a birthday celebration together. We made a reservation and felt welcomed the minute we walked in by almost every server/employee that walked past us. This place feels so cozy and intimate. The booths were very comfortable as well. Yelp will try to censor me. But this place is way too salty. The server was excellent and attentive. He stated they season everything aggressively and he wasn't joking. They dump loads of salt on everything you order. This makes me wonder, what they hiding behind all that salt? If your cuts of meat are good why over salt them? Why offer additional salty sauces for them at an extra cost? The steaks were supposedly cooked over oak, nothing about the steaks had a char or any wood flavor. It was ALL salt. 5/5 restaurant! I researched a few steak houses before landing on Rare Society to take a friend to from out of town. It was a new restaurant for my husband and I to try as well. First, I hear the parking situation is very bad, so we arrived 10mins early just in case but we got extremely lucky and got one of the 3 parking spaces right in front of the restaurant. We were greeted very pleasantly and seated promptly. There is a dress code and I loved seeing other guests also dressed up - tho I did notice a few people at the bar next to us were in shorts and hoodies with flip flops- which were removed and sitting tailor style with their bare feet facing our table. It was a bit odd and I wish it wasn't in view, but it didn't impact our experience. The food was delicious. We got the executive board for 3 people along with 3 sides. I don't recall the cuts (not a huge steak connoisseur like my husband), but they were all cooked perfectly medium rare. The Mac and cheese, ravioli, and carrots were all delicious - but the board really was the star of the show. The sauces were so good and complimentary to the beef. The bone marrow was also an awesome addition. The server also warned us of their "heavy seasoning" but we thought it was perfect amount ! Maybe the carrots were a bit saltier/spicier than I expected but steaks were perfectly seasoned. It was the perfect amount of food for me - tho my friend and husband both agreed they could've had another side. I did also get a half dozen oysters. They were phenomenal and fresh. I was so excited seeing the menu, reading some of the reviews, and got there in time for happy hour as I wanted to try that burger everyone says is amazing. Definitely had to try the bread also. Nothing was omg... it wouldn't be anything I'd crave, or planning the next time I could get there. Rare Society has become such a special spot for us. We first came here the day we got married, and this time we came back for an early Valentine's date night. It's definitely one of our go-to places when we want a great night out together. The ambiance is dark, moody, and fancy without feeling too formal. You can absolutely dress casual, but it's also a great place to dress up if you're in the mood for it. The first time we visited we sat indoors at a table, and our server was incredibly nice and knowledgeable about the menu, which made the experience even better. This time we sat at the bar and ended up having such a great time talking with the bartender -- it made the night feel really relaxed and personal. The food is always amazing. My husband loves the beef tartare and always has to get it. Since he can't eat seafood, this is the place where I get to go all out and enjoy all the seafood for myself, which I definitely don't complain about! At one point our table (or bar space) was completely covered with food and I felt a little bad because we ordered so much -- but it was all worth it. My last review was in early 2021 and I had visited during pandemic times, so when my cousins suggested we meet for dinner, I decided to give it another try. We met on a Wednesday night with a party of six plus a dog and were seated on the patio. Our server was friendly and interacted well with our group. We met at 7 PM. The inside appeared busy, but there were only a few parties on the patio. It was a bit chilly, but the heat lamps were plenty warm. They had a large drink menu, with a short list of holiday-themed drinks. My husband and I both chose the "Bah Humbug" which was a holiday-spiced Old Fashioned. It was a decent Old Fashioned, but I did not taste any holiday spice. I chose a glass of Malbec later to accompany my meal. Unfortunately the list of wines by the glass was quite short, and the Malbec was just so-so. There were a lot of wines by the bottle, but our whole party was ordering various different drinks, thus I just ordered by the glass. My favorite part of the meal was sharing the family-style appetizers and sides. My favorites of the evening were the oysters (fresh, large and properly shucked), the onion rings (large and slightly crispy), and the bacon appetizer (felt more like an entree). My least favorite were the brocollini (too charred) and the blue crab dip (not as flavorful as I hoped). We ordered all different steaks, and some seafood for our entrees, and everyone enjoyed them. I had the filet and it was perfectly cooked. My cousin commented on how much he enjoyed the king salmon. Service was mostly excellent, but it did lag a bit in the middle. The restaurant is quite pricey, and I would say that it is not quite as refined as some other restaurants that in the same price range. Absolutely everything was A M A Z I N G ! Our server was attentive and helpful when answering our questions. We were seated quickly although we were 15 min early for our reservation. Food I ordered: Margarita- yummy and perfectly balanced! Bread - garlicky, toasty, warm and so buttery, FANTASTIC. Cesar salad - a lot of cheese which was different but so good. The perfect amount of their dressing and fresh lettuce Filet mignon - the crust was perfectly seasoned and seared, the inside was tender and juicy Whipped potatoes with lobster- were amazing, delicious, superb, fantastic. Celebrated a birthday on a Wednesday evening, easy reservation. Amazing service and atmosphere. Cowboy Star has been my #1 for a long time BUT I think this place takes the cake!!! Rich flavorful steaks and amazing sides. Best broccolini EVER, can't have it any other way now.
