Old Hickory, located in the Gaylord Hotel is a top notch steak house. My family and I opted for dinner here, pre-graduation to celebrate. We called ahead and made reservations & the hostess even followed up with us the day of. Maneuvering your way around the Gaylord property can be tricky, but follow the signs- self parking or valet is available. Then when you enter the hotel, you have to locate the restaurant. To get to the hostess stand, you can take the stairs or an elevator down. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated immediately where we were greeted by our waiter Jaime and "assistant waiter" Bryan Love. Both provided the best service and were extremely attentive. We started with sparking water and a bottle of wine, the guys ordered old fashions. Our glasses never went empty- the water and wine were flowing all evening. For starters we decided on the artisanal cheese plate- goat, bleu and cheddar, and they were all amazing. We also ordered a crab cake per each guest instead of just the standard order. For dinner, I had the Filet Mignon with the bleu cheese bacon topping. I must say, this steak was perfect- cooked medium, nice searing on the outsides, the bleu cheese was delicious. We ordered table sides- the habanero corn (which Bryan shared the recipe with us!), the mushrooms and the broclini and the truffle fries. All were amazing! Everyone at the table raved about their choices. For dessert, we brought in our own cheesecake (my brothers personal favorite). Jaime and Bryan were able to slice and serve it, again just phenomenal service. Bryan was very personable and chatting with my family, we like to interact and have fun, and Bryan went along with us. Although we had been there a few hours, I never felt rushed, the restaurant wasn't overly crowded, and the ambiance was elegant. I would recommend coming here for those looking for a nice place to celebrate. Keep in mind though, this isn't a cheap steakhouse, so come prepared to pay for the service and the quality of food. If you can't get a reservation for the dining room sit in the attached bar. They offer the same menus and the atmosphere is nice. They offer a good whisky selection and the wine menu is pretty good as well. The garlic fries were delish and the corn side was amazing. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and was perfect for sharing if you aren't that hungry. The only disappoint was the lobster bisque.....hardly any lobster, did not look anywhere close to the pictures online. The server brings the bowl with no broth, then pours the broth in front of you. Me and my gf both ordered a bowl and both received 2 small spoon sized pieces of lobster. I realize that the price point of this bisque doesn't command a full bowl of lobster but 2 pieces???? I would rather pay more and have a proper lobster bisque presented to me. Anyway, overall good experience and good food. Although it was busy he managed to stay on top of servicingu party. His recommendations for steak cuts was spot on, with the chef cooking the ribeye to a perfect temperature. Eaten here many times in the past. Ordered bone-in Ribeye SOP. Cut in to check temp - Medium Rare -Perfect - and asked for another knife assuming this one was dull. Knife was fine...toughest $60 steak I've ever tried to eat. Flavor and service was great. They offered another one but why would I? They then offer another cut but again why would I? Wait another :20 and roll the dice? Very disappointed. Won't eat here again. Perry's or III Forks and another STEAK placenext for me when I'm in town in a couple weeks. We had an EXCELLENT experience at the old hickory steakhouse. I read the review from the other day from the guy from California that was talking about the jalapeño cream corn. i thought "he's from California - he doesn't know anything." But he was on point with his review of the food and the service. Our servers were Binh and Brian. Top-notch professional, very attentive, and super friendly! I enjoyed every time they approach the table. The food was outstanding. My wife had the filet mignon and I had the mushroom risotto. We also had a side of the aformentioned jalapeño cream corn. It was every bit as good as the other reviewer talked about. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. We also got the roasted mushrooms as a side. If you're a mushroom lover you'll enjoy them. I can take or leave mushrooms and my otherwise sophisticated palate thought it could've used a little bit more "something." I have no recommendation in that regard. Dinner was followed by dessert. Cheesecake surrounded by a large chocolate " dinosaur egg." Super good. All in all - a great time and a great meal. I decided to splurge since I was celebrating the end of a long Army career, so I got the 150 day aged bone-in steak, with fresh cut truffles no less. It was good, I'm not going to lie, but for the price, "good" doesn't cut it. It was actually a bit dry and I wasn't convinced it had been aged as long as they claimed. The truffle was not as aromatic as you'd expect, either (bordering on the insipid, truth be told). I didn't complain on the spot, mostly because I felt embarrassed by having been victim to the big Gaylord resort hype, but wanted to take the opportunity to warn others here. We had a party of 10, service was super slow and the server wasn't very friendly. He seemed annoyed when we asked questions. The food took forever to come out and to make matters worst, I explicitly told him that I was allergic to mushrooms. Long and behold there was mushrooms on my plate. I order the Chilean sea bass, the sea bass was delicious. The soba noodle was plainly gross. The cut it into tiny little pieces and .... I can't even tell you what they did, but whatever sauce they poured on it was just gross. The steak, was nothing special. All in all it was expensive and it wasn't worth it. Not impressed. Other than the decor/atmosphere this place left much to be desired. Hostess (Rosa) greeted us but then had to answer the phone which is understandable. However 20 seconds later she greeted us again like we just walked in and as if we weren't standing there the whole time and she didn't have our name printed out in her hand. Which was odd and unprofessional. We were sat at our table where the steward got our water order. Then proceeded to sit there without menus. When our waiter finally came she asked us what we liked to drink without offering the wine list. After getting menus she proceeded to give us the features. However when we had a question about the regular menu she could not answer us. We order two glasses of wine but she didn't let us taste it first or show us the bottle which I thought was off but okay. Finally decided to ordered the cowboy ribeye since it looked good on here. Food came out and the steak was cooked perfectly EXCEPT it was barely room temperature. We didn't bother to send back bc at this point we were starving and just wanted to get out of there. Scallops were decent and the mushrooms was the only item that was actually hot. We left without bothering with dessert. We made reservations here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. When you walk into the restaurant, you enter the wine bar first and then walk downstairs to the restaurant. The ambience is really romantic. Dimly lit, classy, and a nice setting for a night out. We had a few questions about the wine list. Our waiter went and got the wine sommelier to help us make our selection. Our waiter, Bingh, did a wonderful job. He was top-notch. Knowledgeable, engaging, and went out of his way to acknowledge our anniversary. For appetizers, we had the crab cakes (serving size was 2). They were amazing; Tasty, flaky, no shells, and high quality crab. We also had the lobster bisque and it was the best bisque I have ever tasted (seriously!). The lobster meat is put into the bottom of the bowl first and then the bisque is poured over it (great presentation). The bisque is well balanced, flavorful, light, and had the perfect consistency. For the main entrees, I had the rib-eye (medium well). It was tender and well seasoned. The hubby had the Texan, which is the filet mignon and lobster tail with a wonderful sauce on top. It was cooked to perfection and he thoroughly enjoyed it. For the sides, we had the whipped potatoes, creamed corn, and sautéed mushrooms. All of which were good (note, the sides are large enough to be shared and you can also get half portions on certain sides). Since it was anniversary, we were given a complimentary dessert - crème brulee. It was delish. This is your area of expertise and how do you not fill up the tires? sure you can fix it when it's pointed out, and your tires might be the best in the business, but fill up the damn tires right the first time, dude. if you go to a steakhouse and they eff up your steak by under cooking it not once, ut twice in a row - same thing. Chilled plates are fine, but not chilled pre-made ones... bah. Perfect service complete with wine sommelier, habanero creamed corn has just enough flavor to it. Potatoes au Gratin come with a thick layer of broiled cheese on top. Filet mignon is not overcooked, and lobster tails come with *creamy* drawn butter and *grilled* lemon. After hearing how great Old Hickory is, I finally had the opportunity to give it a try. While the food was pretty good, the two things that stood out to me were the service and the cheese cart. I have to give our server credit, she really knew the food and wines. I feel like it's rare that you find someone who has the knowledge and enthusiasm to really make an impact. Every question we threw at her, she was able to answer, elaborate and make recommendations. She was a true professional. For dinner, we started with the sashimi and the wedge salad. The spice rub on the sashimi was a little too sweet for my taste but the wedge salad was very good. We had the bone in aged NY strip with cognac peppercorn sauce for the main course. It was ok. Our creamed corn on the side was not overly creamy but very tasty. Now for my second favorite part...the cheese cart. Let me tell you, I think I've found my next career, Fromager. Just ship me off to France right now and I'll begin the journey. OK, maybe not but it does sound pretty great to learn about and taste cheeses for a living. Old Hickory has a pretty fantastic cheese cart. I have to admit, though, that I wouldn't have been able to appreciate it properly without the help of our Fromager. He prepared three of the most interesting cheese combinations for us that I've ever had. We had a triple creme brie paired with pecans that tasted just like butter pecan ice cream. We also had a smoked pecorino with salty Marcona olives and a Spanish cheese with apricots. I loved them all. Overall, it was a great experience based on the service and the cheese. Went here with with a very special guest and loved it! We both weren't feeling wine as we had both drank too much booze the night before but I can tell you they have a HUGE Wine menu Our servers name was Ann I believe. She was very friendly, very prompt and provided excellent service. We started with the Mussell's appetizer. It was VERY GOOD. I have become a Mussells fan recently and this came in a close second to the best I have had...just behind the ones my wife makes! I had the Caprese Salad. The Mozzerella wasn't as soft as I was used to...but it had good flavor and texture. The tomatoes were also amazing. My guest had the Wedge Salad and I had a bite and it was yummy as well! For our entree, I had the Filet Mignon with Horseradish Cream Sauce and it was cooked to perfect medium rare. It was delicious. My guest had the Strip I believe and it was also out of this world. We got Asparagus and Au Gratin Potatoes as well as sides. The pototoes were the best Au Gratin we have both ever had. I've never had Asparagus before so I took a shot with and it was awesome! The service was great without being overbearing. The Manager stopped by as well to make sure everything was great and the food was amazingly good. We ate dinner at the Old Hickory Steakhouse last week. Overall, the food was good. Better than what I was expecting for a hotel steakhouse. The atmosphere was decently nice... dark, fairly formal. The wine list was very big and very good and was served at the right temperature by a sommelier. Overall, it was a nice experience. But for the price that was paid, I'm going to be picky. The waiteress was nice enough. She came to the table to greet us and see what we'd like to drink but we had not been given any menus, and was very pushy about getting us a cocktail from the bar. She went around and asked each of us what'd we like from the bar. And only after all adults said "no thank you" did she go get the menus. That's cool, but you could totally see through the ploy (I'm sure they're required to be pushy cocktail pushers) but we had two small children at the table with us. I don't see us knockin' back dirty martinis on a Thursday night. The steaks were good and cooked perfectly medium rare. The sides we ordered (mashed potatoes, spinach, habanero corn, mushrooms) all came out great. The kids menu was great and shirley temples were enjoyed! Their steaks (also ordered medium rare, amazing children) were cooked great too. So, wanna know what was really aggravating? There were long long lulls between courses, and it took forever to get the check at the end of the meal. They brought our bill pre-charged to our friend's room without asking the table how we wanted to pay for the check. And charged us 20% gratuity for 4 adults and 2 older children. Really? *eyebrow raised* Kind of left me with a bad taste in my mouth, enough to forget the taste of the good steak. They do validate your parking so you're not stuck paying the $20 valet on top of your $250 meal, so there's that. read more

Yes this vegetarian was sent to a steakhouse. Of course my first thought when I find out I have to dine at one of these places is, "oh great I get to eat 3 side salads tonight." Not so at the Old Hickory. I was impressed. Normally I would have avoided this location b/c it's in the overwhelming Gaylord. I went for a work function so I didn't have a choice. I'm glad I was forced to go. If the vastness of the Gaylord has you scared, just leave a little extra time. I actually found myself entertained when I took the time to look around. Just don't get lost like I did but if you do there's staff everywhere to get you back on track. Eating at the Old Hickory is just as much about the experience as it is the food. I had a fantastic salad that wasn't just the plain old side salad. I wish I could remember the name but it doesn't matter b/c I think most people care about the steak anyway. Well I can't speak for it myself but I can tell you the 3 other people I was with were raving about there meals. One had the fillet and the others had the prime rib. No one was able to clear their plate b/c of the sheer amount of food. We did try though which is why we all felt like we needed elastic waistbands as we were leaving. Side dishes come in large portions meant to share. Our waitress warned us but we didn't really believe her so we went overboard. I ordered the scalloped and mashed potatoes. We also ordered mushrooms (I skipped these) and the habenaro cream corn. I'm not usually one for cream corn but this was somewhere between regular and creamed in consistency. But OMG the flavor was amazing. I would seriously suggest the corn to anyone going. I know that sounds weird but it'll make sense after the first bite. Other cool things about the place include the cheese tray (so many options) and the wine selection. I don't drink or eat cheese but the others with me did and they had nothing but great things to say. There's also a wine tasting area upstairs that looked pretty cool. I'm sure someone else could explain it in better detail and do it more justice. Something they don't advertise is parking validation. If you show them your ticket they'll comp your parking or give you a discount. Makes the valet situation a non-issue. So to sum it up, everything from beginning to end was great and I'd go back even though I don't eat meat. I have to go back just for the desert (carrot cake cheesecake). The food, the atmosphere and the service were all top notch. It isn't cheap but it's well worth the price. I think this would make an especially great place to take out of town guests. read more

Like many of my best reviews: short, sweet, to the point... Best steakhouse experience (underscore - "experience") I've had in Dallas so far. Mainly because we were literally treated like dignitaries, heads of state, VIP's ... and for no other reason than that we chose to dine with these fine folks. Everything dove-tails on what has already been said in previous reviews (steaks, appetizers, sides, etc.etc. - I simply can't add to what's nearly perfect.) What impressed me the most, however, was a special request we had put in a few days prior... Calling around town, it was tough finding Beef Wellington on anyone's menu - nobody seemed to have it. So I figured why not give Old Hickory a try; no luck they only serve it on occasion ... BUT... the manager literally came on the phone and told me if I call a few days in advance when making my reservation, he'd create a special appetizer of mini wellingtons that isn't on the menu. And sure enough - they did exactly that - and it was wonderful. Further, the manager came by and treated us just as I had mentioned at the beginning of this review... Wow. Pound for pound this is one of the best steakhouses in Dallas. I am from Dallas but live in Philly and took 10 coworkers with me to try this restaurant. We all loved it. What a glorious restaurant. Head to head comparison versus Bob's Steak and Chop House (which I have rated as 5 stars on Yelp): Old Hickory has a very nice, upscale, quiet environment tucked into the trendy Gaylord Hotel. Bob's is an old-school, very loud and male-friendly steakhouse. If you are going out with a group of guys or male coworkers and want to have a good time and tremendous meal, go to Bob's. If you are taking your wife/girlfriend/in-laws out for a very nice, quite dinner, go to Old Hickory. Both deliver outstanding steaks (similar to Bones in Atlanta), so the food is not really an issue. Considering that half of my party was female coworkers, Old Hickory was an excellent choice. We had a private room at Old Hickory which added to the ambiance. To start, we ordered from their cheese selection (from cheeses from around the world), and the cheeses were very good. I then ordered the lobster bisque and was very happy with the selection. My waitress was named Barbara, and she was outstanding. I told her she needed to do sales for our company as she was one of the best waitresses I have had in the last 2 years. For my entree, I went with the 1855 Brand Premium Angus Ribeye. I am usually a New York Strip guy, but my waitress convinced me that the Ribeye was one of the best steaks. She was spot-on....what an amazing steak.. To go with the steak, my table went with the creamed corn, asparagus, wild mushrooms, and truffle fries. They were all very good. For dessert, I chose the carrot cake cheesecake, which I really enjoyed. I challenge all those who rated this restaurant below 4 stars, and I really feel badly for them. I am very tough on my Yelp critiques, but this place absolutely rocked. This was an absolute treat of a restaurant. The four Gaylord Hotels each have their own version of this classic high-end steak joint. Make no bones about it - this is the most expensive restaurant in a very expensive, convention-hall-size hotel. But it IS worth it and never fails to impress out-of-towners or locals. The atmosphere is typical dark, male and Texan. You feel like you are eating in the library of a manor - maybe because you are - they have several private rooms for groups. The service is VERY good. Whether it the servers, bussers, sommelier, or cheese guy (not sure what the proper name is for him :) all are attentive, knowledgable and professional. There are quite a few things that are different from other steak houses. The lobster bisque is always a favorite, but try the specials. The chef here is VERY good at coming up with interesting new things. The steaks are all wonderful (I've had the fortune of trying most of them). The cowboy ribeye is my favorite though. The sides are each big enough for three people. The jalapeno cream corn is the best one, followed by the mashed garlic and thyme whipped potatoes. The wine list is extensive and don't be afraid to ask for help - they have many good wines in the low end of price. After dinner, you can head over to the Glass Cactus nightclub, which overlooks Lake Grapevine. They have live entertainment most every night and this really is the only place of its kind in the whole MetroPlex. You'll party with the locals and the conventioners. Finally, be sure to get your parking validated, otherwise add another $12 to your meal. They even validate valet parking if you want to pull up to the front of the hotel. read more

We decided to try this restaurant based on a recommendation of some friends. Our reservation was the last of the night and the restaurant looked to have only a couple dozen people left. Our wait staff was personable, friendly and fast. We started with the 3 cheese appetizer which the chef assisted in pairing recommendations. This was the highlight of our experience. My wife ordered the surf and turf and I had ordered the pan seared snapper. Both of these dishes were the chef specials. Both plates arrived in a timely fashion. The pan seared snapper was a mix of different tastes that I didn't feel played well together. The onion glaze overtook the bland flavor of the fish and the apple hash or whatever that was, was a contradiction to the oniony fish experience. It is rarely that I send back a dish but in this case I just couldn't bring myself to soldier through. My wife's dish consisted of an 6 ounce tenderloin and a steamed lobster tail. The dish did not set itself apart from any other upscale restaurant experience except that it did not live up to the reviews. He lobster tail was warm and chewy and was clearly over cooked. The steak had a good flavor but had the consistency of a serloin with was chewy and gritty. If I am being charged 80.00 for an 6 oz tenderloin and a small lobster tail one would expect that you would be served the best cuts. Overall, it was a bad experience for us and based on other reviews ours may be an anomaly. I have read that others had a less than desirable experience when they came at the end of the night so maybe it was just bad timing. I would like to say that the manager was very accommodating and went out of their way to make our experience an enjoyable one. read more

We went with a group of friends for a birthday party in December. It is downstairs under the wine cellar. Which was quite lovely to walk through and the tables are gorgeous. It is spiral down...and your pallet will be up. I think we ordered everything on the menu for everyone to try. It is a NICE NICE NICE place. Dim lighting and white table cloths with people there for every need. Go in a group or just on a date with your sweets. Get a medium rare steak with a great glass of wine....try to save room for desert. Soak up the ambiance and wear something cute. Take an hour or two to just unwind. You will love every minute of it. First off - the tablecloth was dirty. It was so overpowering I could smell it. Huge issue you guys. Clean the linens every day. The Kansas City steak was extremely juicy, I'd suggest that cut. So ordered the Chicken and it was dry and overcooked, almost inedible. The chicken tenders I got from the inside bar were better. Risotto with the chicken was good, not great but good. Perfect pairing with the chicken. The lobster bisque tasted over salted, if you are sensitive to salt, then this isn't your dish. Lots of lobster in the pot though. The whiskey mash drink was way too sweet. The server was way over eager. He annoyed the shit out of me actually. I'd only go back here if there was nowhere else to eat. read more
