I like the expansive square footage of the space and the ample bar seating. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My work compadre and me swung by on a Thursday afternoon for lunch. We had first heard of the place due to a viral video about a chicken sandwich, so we got that. The size of the sandwich was plentiful but the chicken itself was on the dry side and it didn't come out piping hot. I think it may have been sitting under a warmer for a while. I don't understand why it was so viral. There was also something wrong with the Sprite, so they changed the gun. The sandwich did not come with fries, so we had to order those extra. The fries/chips were delicious though: plump, crispy, and well-seasoned. My meal including two Cokes came to $47 including tax and tip. That is way too expensive. It's too bad because I really liked the space and atmosphere, which the staff did a good job of adding to. But considering the square footage, I understand, to some extent. read more

Like I suspect is true of many people, I saw the chicken "burger" on Instagram, went "ooooh looks good", and filed the restaurant away. I came across a chance to try Old Mates one weeknight and what I found was so good I came back that weekend. On entry do not worried if the bar looks mobbed. While drinks are downstairs, there is a much quieter dining room upstairs. I was pointed that way and took a seat at the bar upstairs. Service was attentive, and it took no time at all to get a beer. I had intended to try the chicken sandwich (as had two other guys at the bar) but was intrigued by their special: a butter chicken pie. Why not both? The butter chicken pie came out first. The crust was buttery, the filling was perfectly spiced. It may have been the best thing I had eaten all month. The chicken sandwich was almost a letdown after. In the absence of the butter chicken pie it would have been great. On a later visit I tried the burger, the fully loaded one that I cannot remember the name of. I had been worried it may have been overwhelming; it was very well balanced. My girlfriend tried the fish and chips. It's a dish often done poorly in the US, this is a delightful exception. Think a Aussie version of the nearby Dead Rabbit, albeit happily scaled down a solid 20-25 percent when the bill hits and you get the idea. Similarly a beacon of actual culture, or at least pub culture in the deepest depths of FIDI touching the tourist hordes at South Street Seaport, the vibes and service are top notch and the food distinctly elevated. The Aussie Meat pies are certainly the best in the city, but who knew anyone was checking for them? I'm kidding of course, we all know Aussies have been invading the city in masse for well over a decade now and overtaking entire industries, hospitality not the least of them, so in many ways this place feels long overdue. I do like the concept of an Australian pub. I don't think there are many in NYC. However, this spot in particular gets uncomfortably busy, which is great for business, but hectic when you are trying to unwind and find a seat. I eventually found a place to sit at the bar, but people were spilling into my space the whole time. Again, a good sign the place is popping, just not the most relaxing experience. My main critique was the service. Once I ordered I never saw my server again. I ended up flagging down whoever walked by to pay the bill. I also was not wowed by the food. Admittedly, my first time visiting Old Mates was to see The Wiggles perform an adults-only pub show. That experience was amazing, but it was majorly because of the atmosphere of Old Mates. Dubbed as NYC's "real" Australian embassy, you're going to be surrounded by Australians and Aussie-adjacent food. I absolutely loved it all. The vibes, the energy, the fact lines of people popped into here after work not even realizing that the Wiggles were having a strange show situation just proves how popular Old Mates is on any given day. On the first floor you'll find the bar - jam packed with patrons decompressing after their long workday (and if you're me - looking to listen to the life entertainment of the evening.) The upstairs has a dining area with another bar, this area way quieter than the latter. If you're looking for high energy and dancing you'll head to the basement. There's an area to escape to no matter your energy level for the evening, and it truly makes the space feel inclusive for all. Food: I've never been to Australia, so Australian food is new to me. I loved every bite I had and it was the perfect way to end the night after a few drinks. My favorite was hands down the Aussie meat pie - rich, shredded beef in a flaky, buttery crust. I opted to "make it float" where they top it with mashed peas and potato's and you get to drown it in gravy -- definitely don't skip on that. The make it float upgrade is 100% worth it. The potato wedges were fresh as well, with the mixture of mayo-chili sauce perfectly complimenting the crispy fries. The staff were all lovely and surprisingly, Australian! We joked around with quite a few and in an establishment like Old Mates, you're just bound to be as happy and bubbly as they are. If you're looking for a bit of Australia in NYC - this is your spot. We came here after seeing the viral fried chicken sandwich. This had sort of an Asian flare to it and it was good but not my favorite chicken sandwich ever. I really enjoyed the chips appetizer. This is a fun spot to come with friends and for some live music. My one nitpick would be that the server kept repeating back my NA drink order when I was trying to hide it from friends. read more

The service here was incredible! Everyone we interacted with was so friendly and welcoming. We were always checked on and it created a good environment. We tried the chicken burger and their potato wedges. The chicken sandwich was ok, it has a sweet taste to it which I felt was a little too overpowering, but that's personal preference. The wedges were actually very good, and came with a good sweet and sour dipping sauce. If I came back I'd want to try other items on their menu, and their drinks as well. read more

DA INFAMOUS CHICKEN BURGER!!! I flew through a lot of turbulence to try this bad boy. This was on my list of places to try, but first I wanted to go to the seaport to get on the Mr. Beast speed, boat, tourist travel, we got to the booth to check-in and was told we needed to wait 40 minutes. That's when I pulled out my phone to see what next. Visit on the itinerary, looked up and saw the green awnings. It mustve been fate I was like LOOK @ GOD!!!! Every place is so live in New York. There are a million bars and food places and every single one has a crowd with all the locals and people.So, familiar with the spot. Its so crazy.It was pretty crowded for , three o'clock in the afternoon. We got a table at the side. If I had to explain this sandwich, I would say it is a well seasoned chicken thigh with flavorful breading with a sweet hoison sauce and slaw, it is pretty damn good, I've never seen it on the top 5 sandwiches of New York. But you might wanna give it a look, see, I've been a hunt for the best sandwich in New York all weekend, and it made my top 5. Their French fries are super thick and different. This place has been on my list for a while, finally visited for a holiday gathering with friends. Location- I feel like once you see the front of pub it just fits on the block. Inside was more spacious than I expected. The booths were comfy and the tvs were great for watching sports while catching up with my friends Food- must tries for me was the potato wedges, chicken schnitzel with all the sauces (get them all) & the bangers & mash. What's not to love about an Aussie pub! This is a true ny-take on an Aussie classic which is perfect if you're feeling like a taste of down under. Memorabilia on the walls will remind you of Aussie classics from movies TV and books or media. The TVs are always playing the footy. And you're guaranteed to hear an Aussie accent. The menu features some great classics. Including Bourke St bakery pies and sausage rolls. They also have an Aussie burger with "the lot" - i.e . Beetroot, pineapple and a fried egg. Chicken schnitzel and Parma, bangers and mash, and hot chips with chicken salt and wedges with sour cream and chilli. They have recently introduced a Sunday Roast with lamb, chicken or squash, served with crispy potatoes, veggies and a Yorkshire pudding. Trivia on Tuesdays is also a fun event! September 6, 2026 We were having drinks with a friend when a security guard came over and aggressively yelled at us to move, even though we already had our drinks and were not ordering alcohol in that area. He continued yelling and called a manager. The manager, instead of de-escalating the situation or asking his employee to speak respectfully, sided with the security guard and allowed him to continue yelling at us. I also work in hospitality, and this is absolutely unacceptable. Security should never intimidate or yell at customers, and management should know how to properly handle situations like this. I came here with a colleague for dinner. The menu posted outside piqued our interest, but the place was extremely lively upon entering. There are several floors, and we went to the second level. We went on a Friday, and it was around 7:00 pm. It was super crowded, so I was surprised that we were even able to snag a table. Once seated, we order cauliflower bites. These were tasty but really hot (temperature). For our entrees, I ordered the fish and chips, and she ordered the seafood linguine. We both enjoyed our meals. I know my fish was piping hot--I'm pretty sure I burnt my tongue. Old Mates definitely doesn't serve lukewarm food. It's a cool spot, but it can get very crowded. They have a good amount of space to walk around. They have a unisex bathroom which is interesting if you're fine with that. New, nicely setup authentic Aussie pub! Food was excellent. Meat pies were outstanding and the best deal on the menu ($14 each, super flavorful and filling). The fish tartare was beautiful, delicious, and great for a lighter pub option. Honey carrots were like candy. Showed up at 3pm for a late lunch, not realizing they were not open for lunch on weekdays. The staff was super nice to my daughters, offering them to use the bathroom and being very apologetic. Thankfully, there's a lovely little playground across the street, so we spent 45 minutes there and then returned. They sat us before 4pm opening time, which was above and beyond. Old Mates is a really fun pub/sports bar and if you leave it at that, five stars. However it's Australian themed and all the food is Australian. What's good about it is that it's authentic (not like Outback) and the meals have real heart and depth to them. So why only three stars? Well, in my opinion, the entirety of Australia's contribution to the culinary world is subpar. The entire country only gets three stars!!!! So, while thoroughly enjoyed my chicken schnitzel (it was cooked and salted perfectly), it was accompanied by a horrendous version of gravy that may well have been koala vomit. I loved this place! It's way bigger than I expected--more than one floor and full of surprises. I didn't know what to expect from an "Australian pub," but I had a ton of fun. The oysters and burgers were both really unique and super tasty. Great vibes, good drinks, and a fun crowd. The space just like when it was Trading Post is three floors. They put a bar on the second floor, which was a great idea so you have used through the window windows of the South Seaport. I wasn't overly crazy about the menu, but it was limited the bigger menu wasn't available when I was there so maybe it has a more interesting selection. I just had the prawns which were very good and fresh. Spent $300 on a few drinks and a burger, and then when I went down to their dance floor this ridiculous jerk runs out of the back and starts harassing me because I'm close to a TV that they had on the wall. He kicked me out of the club straight away "time to leave. Time to leave. You're slapping my TV time to leave." Completely Ludacris. There is absolutely no world in which I'm abusing this man's electronics. I tried to talk to him about it. I'm a technician and I work with electronics for a living. His ego issue completely ruined my night. They kicked me out of the club. After spending over $300 personally (and I was with a large group) They ruined my evening. The bar overall had a good vibe. However, the female bartender, Tatum, made me feel so unwelcome. She had the worst vibe. Like she hated her job. I felt so uncomfortable to ask for drinks, she always felt offended when I asked for another drink. I don't think she likes what she does and she makes is obvious. The rest of the bartenders seem miserable. It was Super Bowl Sunday and they looked like we ruined their day. I think this bar has a lot of potential but they need workers who actually like being in the hospitality business. I had a particularly bad experience here, where after commenting casually to another patron that the service was a bit slow I was kicked out. Other patrons (whom I did not know) actually intervened to tell staff that I'd done nothing wrong, but to no avail. I've had much more positive experiences at nearby pubs like Ulysses, TJ Byrnes, and Ryan Maguires which I would heartily recommend instead, and I will be telling my Australian friends not to come here if they visit. read more
