Puffy's Tavern has been a longtime favorite of mine and remains one of Tribeca's most authentic old-school bars. Founded in 1945 and located on Hudson Street, it has managed to hold onto its unpretentious, slightly divey charm in a neighborhood that's changed dramatically over the years. This isn't a cocktail bar, but you can still get a perfectly solid Negroni if that's what you're craving, along with a good selection of tap beers and classic, reasonably priced drinks by Tribeca standards. It's the kind of place where the bar comes first and the frills are intentionally absent. The real standout, though, is the food--especially the Italian sandwiches. Made with high-quality cured meats like prosciutto and soppressata and fresh mozzarella, they're among the best bar lunches downtown. Favorites include the Gladiator, the Matteo, and the Marina. In the evenings, they also offer bar pizzas, wings, and jalapeño poppers, which are ideal with a beer. The atmosphere is pure vintage New York: tin ceilings, a long wooden bar, copper-topped tables, and a lived-in feel that can't be manufactured. There's a proper dartboard setup in the back--one of the few left in the area--which adds to the neighborhood tavern vibe. It's also generally dog-friendly, especially later in the day. Crowds are typical: local regulars and blue-collar workers during the day, and a younger, livelier crowd at night and on weekends. It can get busy, but that's part of the appeal. It ain't Cheers. I've lived in Tribeca since 1980 and believe it or not, had never been to this place. Finally decided to give it a try and it's clear I wasn't missing anything. We sat at a table, unaware there was no table service. The bartender was no more than 10 feet away and could have easily said something like "I'll be happy to take your order here at the bar" but apparently she didn't want to be distracted from her conversation with the two guys at the bar. The food, for what it is is fine and beer is beer. Both of those are available plenty of other places with a great deal more graciousness. So we'll go there. read more

Puffy's bar is fortunate that it's old because that's the only thing it's got going for it. I've been there & the staff are rude, unprofessional and theives. Yes, they steal & when questioned by a customer about a WRONG charge, they are yelled at & banished from the bar. There's many other Google reviews that complain of the exact same behavior and the crooked management lets these loser bartenders get away with it. What a racket. The positive reviews must have been written by friends of the establishment or idiots. It may have been a decent neighborhood bar back in the day, but times have changed. I was at Puffy's last week. The lady bartender had SUCH an attitude. Additional tip was added to my check; I noticed 2 days later when the transaction posted to my bank account. I kept my customer receipt and wrote exactly how much tip I left. While it's not going to break my bank, it's the principle -- how many people do they do this to and no one notices? read more

A friend of mine used to work in Tribeca and recommended that my husband and I stop by Puffy's while we were on a recent NYC visit. We were staying down the street and so before departing we decided to go for an early lunch. Puffy's is known as the neighborhood watering hole and is famous for delicious sandwiches. It looks a bit sketchy on the outside but once you walk in you feel like you've gone back in time in a good way. This place reminds me of so many NYC places of yesteryear. It is clearly a local hangout and not a Tribeca tourist trap. We were greeted with a warm welcome and had our choice of seats as they had just opened. Puffy's has a full bar. If fancy drinks or blender drinks are your thing, I am not sure this is the place to go. I could be wrong but I see this as a classic cocktail, beer and wine place. We however were there for the sandwiches. There is a sandwich menu with a nice variety including choice of breads. You are asked if you want your bread "crunchy" or "soft", We both opted for crunchy ciabatta and we both chose the Gladiator. This sandwich had Italian cold cuts...prosciutto and soppresatta, mozzarella, olive paste...it was so yummy and fresh tasting. The décor is decidedly mostly original and old-school: Tin ceiling, wood tables with copper inserts, big wooden bar. The floor looks like an original tile but I think it might be new because it is in such good shape. Older tile tends to have some cracks in it and would look more worn. Nonetheless, the vibe was heartwarming to me as fewer and fewer of these places exist in the city these days. Prices are quite reasonable. There are two unisex bathrooms which were clean but a little run down. There is a dart board if playing darts is your thing. We chatted with the bartender who was lovely (originally from Croatia) and learned that Puffy's is hopping in the evenings. I can understand why. If I lived anywhere near here, I would be a regular. I will be regular whenever I go to NYC. If you find yourself in Tribeca, check out Puffy's. It's a relic from the good-old-days of NYC. Enjoy a great sandwich and a pitcher of beer. I agree 100% with Brad K. on this one - Puffy's is a nice little dive with great staff, dim lighting, and a solid playlist ranging from RHCP to Rihanna, with some eclectic curveballs thrown in for good measure. Aside from the $3 PBRs, they had Boddingtons and the part pale ale, part wheat beer, part cream ale Sixpoint Sweet Action on tap...nice! (Fun fact: did you know Sweet Action beer was named after a porn magazine? Neither did I, but our bartender did!) If you're hungry, they serve individual pizzas starting at $6 for plain cheese - additional for toppings. The available side space alongside the long bar counter is peppered with tables, and can get a little cramped with people standing around, so our group of nine made our way to the back area, played some darts, and had plenty of room to rest our coats and spread out. Tribecca is to the artys film industry what hells kitchen is to the working stiff McDrunks are. I never really noticed Puffys before, kinda looking like an iron worker dive hang from the street. When you enter your initial thoughts will be confirmed that during the late afternoon to happy hour for the most part it is. Nothing special, but this Yelper has learned that all tooooo often there's always more than what meets the eye upon 1st impression. So, I pulled up a seat at the wooden bar furnished the brass foot kick and a few Big screens and corner dart board. Ordered a guiness and a magners with a side of ice as any good Irishmen should. The eardrum blasting 80's rock tore through the airwaves forcing more intimate conversations especially with the iron workers laughing rather loud in the corner of the small watering hole. Immediately the dichotomy of suits to orange fluorescent work garp becomes quite apparent. Leave those pretentious bones at the door to chew on else where. A daily up to 5pm sandwich menu filled with prosciutto and sopressata with toppings like; balsamic glazed sundried tomatos and fresh mozz, arugula and olive paste along with some olive oil nicely piled between artisian flat sub bread. I was like well this guy is hungry and those sammy's look like they need to get into my belly especilly at around $11 for an ample stack. OMG and when you describe chow with OMG you know you're in for a tantalizing tongue dance. I was blown away. Oh how I wished this place was on the corner next to my house. Honey are you walking the dog again? Hell ya, baby! Puffy's Tavern NY Manhattan Tribeca 1pm Sunday 24th July 2016 Five Stars I cannot believe how many dive bars are in downtown Manhattan: The Patriot, Jeremy's, Raccoon Lounge, etc. Puffy's was absolutely awesome. We came here on Sunday to watch the final day of competition of the 2016 Crossfit Games. We had the entire bar to ourselves. It was Happy Hour All Day meaning $5 Pints. I had 3 Boddington's and played a ton of free darts. I also had a $10 Fellini Sandwich. I think you are supposed to get a choice of bread but no selection was offered. The bread was a bit hard, porous, with a dusting of flour. THe Sopressata was salty and bit spicy. The half moon shaped mozzarella was soft but dry for being "fresh." The olive oil marinated hot peppers and Arugula added some complexity to the sandwich. It was overall good and filling. The Solitary Bartender made sure we were all taken care of. Definitely a place to go to drink and be merry. read more

Came here for my friend's birthday drinks. Very crowded but the crowd didn't bother me. The bartender told me it was "too much work" to serve us lemon drop shots.... okay so I asked him "how about vodka with something sweet" and he goes "I refuse to serve you because your friend didn't tip me"... what??? The guy he pointed at wasn't my friend and how did that affect me?? Not wasting my time and money with the unprofessional behavior. I was hoping to stop into a little dive bar for an afternoon beer. I didn't like the vibe in here and the bartender was not very friendly. Maybe if you live in the neighborhood, this is one of the locals bar. I only saw one other guy there with his son. The bartender was really friendly with him. This is an awesome hidden little semi-dive semi just casual unpretentious pub with a dart board in the back and if you're feeling frisky a "shotski!" Good music mix, nice sound, an unexpectedly decent bump to the base! When we first arrived the pretty dark haired bartender was unfortunately borderline rude, didn't actually greet us just walked over and stood there while we looked up at the beer menu with not so much as a greeting or smile, but we found a friendly face and pleasant above-and-beyond service in the bouncer/ bar back Charlie (it's now pointed out to me that he's actually part owner!). Bartender chick opened up later letting us know they had small pizzas that get delivered frozen from Qns and she was right they were actually pretty good!! Came here in the middle of the day on Saturday and it was surprisingly pretty filled....with more babies than there should of been. The baby in a bar thing never made sense to me, no matter what time of day it is. Stopped in for a bite to eat and the sandwiches are actually pretty good. Well drinks were $8 which are a little pricey, but all I wanted at that point was a drink and wasn't going to complain. I haven't shut a bar down since my early 20s. I'm kinda of proud I was able to do it again. The best part of this bar is that it is unassuming, laid-back and simple. We loved the dart board and played all night long. The drinks were well poured, very inexpensive for NYC and the service was excellent. Been to this bar twice now and really liked it both times. Its a nice little pub in an area that doesn't have many like it. Intimate but usually crowded. They have a few tables, a nice bar and a dart board in the back. They also have two POS systems and a touchtones to play your music. Came in on a Monday. Mellow crowd, typical beer selections, running about $3-$8 a beer. Nothing crazy on the liquor option. Music is classic/ modern rock hits with 3 TVs covering. Mixed crowd of accents & suits. Regulars afoot, chatting it up with the bartenders...the aroma of fruited beers lingers past as the thud of the dart board creeps the hum of 90's alternative music. This hole in the wall bar is definitely a dive bar which has its positives in that it is extremely affordable for the area of town it is located in. There are beers on draft for five dollars and not a bad selection at that. The selling point was finding this gem on a Saturday evening and essentially having the space all to ourselves. The place offers a dart board which apparently is hard to come by in the city especially in Tribeca. I was in a group of five and we played darts to our hearts content. We kept score on the chalkboard on the wall. We were not rushed at all, service was fast and the bartenders were friendly. Although we did not try the food, next time we visit we will be sure to give that menu a go. We are glad that we stumbled upon this place!!
